NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think that I am leaning heavily towards NSU for several reasons. 1.) Reputation 2.) Wary of an all PBL instruction 3.) Large campus amenities vs Single Office Bldg 4.) Wary of not paying for rotations in 3rd/4th year. How are you leaning?

Accepted! Interviewed 1/7. I'm deciding between here and LECOM-B!

How are you all dealing with the deposits at these schools? I am also leaning towards NOVA, but the multiple deposits are killing me.

I agree with all of that. I also liked how there was more of a community at Nova, more activity and things to be involved in. I certainly think anyone could get a strong education at LECOM, but NSU is more established an I think may have better 3rd and 4th year rotations...as you alluded to.

The deposits are killing me to!

Does anyone have or know how to get the 2010-1011 academic calendar for NSU-COM? Thanks

NSU-COM Class of 2014 😀

Some people mentioned that they were given interview invitations when they called to check their application status. I was told that my application is complete, that's all. Is this a not-so-good news??

Do they send a complete email (I got the "we received your secondary, send us your letters" email last week)? How long does this take? Is it too soon for me to call and ask my status?

NSU-COM Class of 2014 😀
The specific calendar probably won't be ready for awhile, we just got our 'summer semester calendar' which consists of a few weeks in May.

NSU-COM Class of 2014 😀

I looked all over the place for it and found nothing. From what I have heard about last year I think we start the first week of August but i'm really not sure. If you find anything let me know!

I think I found it! There's a calendar posted on the DO Class of 2014 group which can be accessed through SharkLink.

NSUCOM - Class of 2014 😀

Just FYI for those that don't have the SharkLink access (you get it after you pay the first part of your deposit): Orientation starts August 2nd at 8:10 am. Looking at the schedule, they mix in a few classes during the orientation week.

I was wondering the same thing. When I check my status it says "Decision Pending."

Anyone here knows which anatomy book (ISBN #) they are currently using at NOVA? Thanks.

I have Decision Pending also 😕 hopefully that might lead to good news soon. Would anyone recommend calling to find out when a decision will be made???

I just cancelled my interview for this tues (feb. 2), just n case someone wants to move up.

I submitted my secondary nov16 and my LORs were on virtual eval on nov 2. I remember calling at the end of nov and asking to see if i was complete and they said it takes a while to upload the LORs, so I waited. I called again after winter break and they asked me if I had sent the LORs yet. When I told them that they'd been up since nov 2nd, they were like "oh, wait a second... ok, you're complete now".... so I suggest you call and make sure bc they're very disorganized.

I called... Apparently they do have everything... I guess I'm just in the waiting game!!!

Just in case anyone freaks out about getting a letter of withdrawal in the mail.

I recently interviewed and got a letter yesterday stating "your application to NSU-COM will not receive further consideration for admission...Per your request, your application has been officially withdrawn."

This was an error in the system and it seems this error has caused some withdrawal letters to be sent out to the wrong people, however when I called my file was not affected.

So DONT PANIC! Lol...almost gave me a heartattack.

Hi,

Would please tell me which anatomy book are you guys currently using?

Thanks.

Tried to find my syllabus for that from this year but no luck...but honestly I never looked at the book. Most people just used professors notes + Netter's or Grants atlas. I never took anatomy ever and I did just fine using those. You dont really have time to read the book.

For the most part the professor's lecture notes are all that's required to do well in the class. It's the same way for most of the classes---few textbooks are ever utilized--they give ample handouts.

In addition, when joining clubs and organizations at the beginning of the year, one of the clubs offers Netter's Atlas for a discounted price and this is what most of the students wind up getting. Any other extra stuff is usually limited to Netters flash cards, an anatomy coloring book, and a few other pieces of material that can be obtained from talking to previous students (like me!) once school starts 🙂

How do they assign students to lab groups A and B? Is it random or alphabetical or what?

Everyone gets assigned to an academic society randomly (kind of like the British college model ala harry potter as well), A/B depends on which academic society you are in.

I called my assigned admissions counsler to see if my alternate status has changed and basically got an answer saying that there is nothing I can do to increase my chances of being accepted except with for the march 15 deadline for the 2nd deposit. She said letters will not change anything, so what does this mean? bad or good?

Can you only be palced on alternate after u have interviewed?

The 30+ inches of snow that fell yesterday helps me to reaffirm my decison to go to school in Florida.

76 here yesterday, got a bit chilly in the evening last night though (60s) 🙂

but lot of them also have no school tomorrow, that means they get to enjoy the super bowl.

So we need to submit our final transcripts, the deposit (of course), letter of intent, and the "technical standards" thing??? Am I missing something in my packet, because I don't see that anywhere, anyone know what I'm talking about?😕

Technical standards thing is stapled to the letter of intent.

The letter and deposit aren't binding are they?

The only other thing that I can think of is the residency statement and proof (if you are claiming Florida residency). Like badapplestix said the "technical standards" form is attached to the letter of intent. I t just asks if you can meet the technical standards for the program, or if you are requesting reasonable accomodation. And no the deposit is not binding, but it is non-refundable!

Just gave up my spot in the class of 2014!!! 🙁
Great school, excellent facilities....but got accepted in-state. Hoping I made the right choice :\ Good luck to all who have been accepted or hope to be accepted 🙂

Congrats, and best of luck!

I am completely antsy for Nova's decision. I interviewed 1/21 and was told that the committee meets 2/4 but I've called to check on my status and they say they still have not made their decision yet. Anybody in the same boat?

I wouldn't mind waiting except my 30 day limit for accepting Lecom-B's offer is coming up in a week and I would hate to put down a deposit if Nova does end up accepting me. Nova is my number one choice at this point. If only they could give me an exact date! They told me that it could be at any point on the phone...🙁

I would call again and explain that NOVA is your #1, but that a deposit is due and see if they've made a decision.

i interviewed with you! i was in the first group, what about you? either way, i also remember being told we would be reviewed first week of feb, to find out that week or the next, but user creekfreek24 posted on 1/25, "If you interviewed on Jan. 21st, last Thursday, the committee will be making a decision on Feb. 15th. I know that's a really long time to wait and it sucks. A professor told me that today. I don't know if it's true or not but I would assume it is."

I know how you feel! I was in the same boat, except for I interviewed at NSU on the day that the LECOM-B deposit was due...I had to pay the deposit, and then I was accepted into NSU. Look at it this way, if they cannot give you an answer about NSU at least you have an "insurance policy." Yes it sucks to walk away from a large deposit, but it would suck even more to not pay the deposit at LECOM and then not get into another med school! Have you checked online to see if your status has changed? If I remember correctly it changes as soon as they have made a decision...Best of luck!

Hi everyone! I interviewed at Nova on 2/2 with the morning session. Did anyone else interview that day? Have you heard anything yet? I haven't. 🙁 Nova is my #1 school so I'm hoping to hear good news.

us 1/21-ers are still waiting to hear, so i'm guessing you have to wait until we hear first before they get to your group.

I see. Thanks "the poet sings"! 🙂

no prob :-D. i'll be posting when i hear something. i'm also really hoping to get in. they are my first choice, too, but i'm worried it's only because i don't want to leave florida and because it's the only school i've interviewed at so far and they totally won me over.

That's funny you say that. Nova is the only school I have interviewed with as well and I REALLY don't want to leave FL either. I'm married and my husband owns a business so he can't just pick up and go with me if he wanted to. We talked about doing the long distance thing but I did research in Berkeley for 10wks this past summer and that was killer! I definitely can't do 4 years of med school away.

Good luck to you :luck:!!

To all those eagerly waiting to hear whether you've been accepted to Nova, I'd suggest regularly checking your WebStar account. You status will be updated there before they even mail out the acceptance packages. Good luck to everyone, and I look forward to being in class with you guys soon!

I've been doing exactly that. I think, however, that it's making the anxiety worse. I check it WAY too often :scared:.
