Official 2014-2015 Underdog Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LM 66 - 1 interview and 6 rejections

I think I certainly qualify as an underdog:
My sGPA is around 3.2 and cGPA is not much better. I am also California resident and non-URM (if anything, overrepresented) -- so it was looking very grim indeed.

But, I did not give up and maintained 3.9 in last 2 years of college and received 36. I also did a SMP.

Now, I am sitting with one MD interview at mid/mid-high tier school and one DO interview at a desirable location (for me). Hoping for more...

Of course, the game still isn't over, but what a transformation from 3 years ago -- when I thought I had absolutely no chance at ANY medical school.

I saw the official 2013-2014 thread and these were their criteria:

Wow that's an amazing track record!

For those interested, I also applied to 11 MD/PhD programs and I have been invited to 3 and rejected from 3.

My sGPA is around 3.2 and cGPA is not much better. What's worse, I was even suspended from my undergraduate college for subpar academic performance. I ended up finishing college in 6 years. I am also California resident and non-URM (if anything, overrepresented) -- so it was looking very grim indeed.

Would like to update that, now, I have two MD interviews and two DO interviews (one in California)! 🙂

MCAT 29 with a 7 PS subsection.

3 interviews/ 5 apps for DO, 1 acceptance, no rejections yet

2 interviews out of 11 apps for MD so far, 1 acceptance to my first choice!

90% sure I'm done with it all at this point! My life feels weird without the constant anxiety of "what if I don't get into med school?"

Huge congrats dude! That's awesome and I'm really happy for you, especially since you got your first choice. You planning on attending any more interviews if you get them, or are you just gonna coast?

Thanks! I'll probably just coast at this point. All the traveling has really burned a hole in my wallet. I might check out penn state though if they give me the chance.

Goodluck to all in this thread, I won't be applying for another couple years but you are all an inspiration for SDN underdogs like me 😀

3.3/32
Complete 12 MD

Economically disadvantaged, federal assistance during childhood, inner city.
0 invites, 2 rejections

I'm happy with my DO application cycle right now though.

3.37|3.2|30
non-URM, strong leadership and ECs, currently in AmeriCorps year of service at LGBT community health center
0 interview invites, 2 holds, 4 rejections, 10 silent

More luck with my DO cycle, though, so I can't be too upset!

I consider myself an underdog. I had a really crappy childhood and a tough life. My stats are pretty average (LizzyM 69). My extracurriculars and research experience are decent.

I applied to 7 schools. 6 interviews (5 early interviews in August and September, 1 for November). 1 acceptance so far! I'll hear back from the rest of the schools starting November 15th (Texas resident)
