I have never experienced it either..maybe it's just wishful thinking. But I've heard people talking about how it SHOULD be a thing. I know there are many corporations that give people time off. Some people may have the day off if their workplace is also a polling place
John Oliver just did a segment on why Election Day is on a Tuesday. You might enjoy that.

Out of curiosity, how many ii percentages are even left though? Feels like only mass rejections are coming out on the school-specific sites now whereas at the end of summer, massive waves of iis were going out.

Maybe people are getting sdn fatigue though and just not reporting iis?

Sorry for the pessimisssssssmsss. I needs some reassurance right now, guyzzz 🙁 🙁 🙁

It depends on what you state you live in, but a lot of places give you up to two hours off work to vote.
When I worked for State Government (Florida) we could allegedly get 2 hours paid administrative leave to vote but they (shift supervisors) always said they couldn't let anyone do it because we were "short staffed". :yeahright:

Get used to that in the hospital. Perpetually short staffed

Another day, more nothing.

Sooooo. I thought Meme Magic Monday was supposed to result in a flood of II's

Yeah meme monday did nothing for me. Maybe we broke it.

For the past 5 months, I have been working with a PI, who just offered to write me a LOR. If I submit his letter through AMCAS (which I think will be strong), do you think this will help my chances?

Couldn't hurt. More likely to help.

When we first submitted our memes for verification, the meme application cycle just opened and not many people submitted, so we got verified faster and got our interviews faster. Now so many people are applying for IIs with memes, so the verification process slows down, which is why it takes longer to get our AMCAS/AACOMAS info verified and matched with our memes to process our II requests. They will send you an email when the verification is complete and your II arrives.

At this point, I am considering this cycle a failure. Any ideas what I should work on to be more competitive next cycle? I have a MCAT of 508 and a cGPA of 3.63 and a sGPA of 3.68 (this is using the TMDSAS method of GPA calculation), and I had everything finished by August 3rd. I have over 1000 hours of undergraduate research with secondary authorship in an article and a couple of abstracts. I should have another article out by the time the application opens up again. I have over 600 hours volunteering at a local hospital and around 40 hours shadowing doctors (two different types). By the start of the next application cycle, I can have a 3.67 cGPA and a 3.7 sGPA.

Review your school list and get your essays looked at.

For schools, I applied to all the Texas schools, SUNY Downstate, Penn State, Rosalind Franklin, and Dartmouth. As for essays, where should I get them checked?

I'm in a similar boat, ~74 LizzyM, and quite frankly dumbfounded. Currently working hard on plan B.

Get some clinical experience and volunteeringg. Patient contact.

It does seem a little frustrating to not know for sure what you did wrong/are missing while you are trying to improve your application for the next cycle. We can work off what we suspect for now and maybe the adcoms will bless us and make their faces to shine upon us as the cycle goes on ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The feeling of not knowing on what went wrong sucks right?

For patient contact, my time at the hospital had me in the psychiatric ward, the outpatient rehab ward, and the front desk.

Hey! Found this post by gonnif the other day:
1) If you application is already complete and in the review stage, by sending in formal letters of rec via AMCAS. some schools that follow process strictly see you implying that you want your application removed from review, reopened, have letters added and then added back to review queue where it may be put back at bottom of pile. A formal LOR at this point is not advisable.

2) What you want are update letters sent to each in to each school, at least those schools that take updates (see which schools have some phrase either encouraging or discouraging updates). Since this is not a formal LOR, you can write a brief update and attached photocopy of "LOR" from your PI. As long as it is on letterhead with contact info, it should be fine.

This would be a strong update where you a) have accomplishment and b) with supporting letter. While this wont have the same full impact as formal LOR, it also doesnt risk any process issues delaying you.

Do you have any non clinical volunteering for those in need?

If you can, i would add more clinical stuff. Such as medical scribe, ENT, etc. They don't like shadowing as much as people think... nor most volunteering. also doing some nonclinical volunteering.

Also essays, especially that personal statement. I read my friends from last year after she failed to get in and spotted many sentences that had the best of intentions, but made her sound like a heartless and arrogant bitch. Though in her case she does lack compassion, but in either case you need to revisit to make sure what you're writing is coming across the right way.

Is this true? I also have the same question about adding a LOR to schools that I haven't heard back from
I'm not really an authority on this, but gonnif is a well-respected and known adcom member here on SDN, so personally, I heed his advice.

What did you do in the wards?
In the psychiatry ward, I organized the paperwork and gave patients stuff if they were allowed to have it, in outpatient rehab, I filed paperwork again and I cleaned up after the patients, and in the front desk, I gave directions to people looking for patients.

Would I be able to a proper amount of clinical activity by next application cycle? Also, I honestly do not think that I came of as heartless or mean in my personal statement, but it couldn't hurt to have it looked over.

Not really, all my volunteering was clinical.
I had a ~3.5/513 and didn't get any II's last year, added <100 hours of non-clinical volunteering with those in need (in addition to continuing other volunteering) and am up to 6 II's this year. Personally, I'd guess it's that, school selection, or essays/etc.

I was using my friend as a dramatic example! And yes. I have done about 600 hours of clinical scribing in 3.5 months!!

Edit: I agree also with the person above about volunteering with people in need in a non clinical setting!!

What options would there be if I do not want to be a scribe (all the other options I see like pheotomist and EMT require certification) . I was temporarily a scribe but it did not work out too well for me (the hospital is over a hour away with traffic and they wanted me to work the graveyard shift during school nights).
