Anyone know the timeline for JU as a non-match school? Like within how long from interview do they respond and how long do they give applicants to accept or reject acceptances? Is it all before the match date?

So. Curious to hear everyone's top program(s), and why?
 
just heard about a girl who has a lot of interviews and she was supposedly kicked out of a dental school for sabotaging one of her faculty’s private practices by leaving bad reviews because she didn’t like said faculty member. needless to say, the faculty found out who was behind the fake reviews and told the school/threatened with a lawsuit. this girl then went to that faculty’s practice and begged them not to say anything/expel her and offered them “a bag filled of money” as a bribe. fast forward to now and she graduated from a different dental school (she was in fact expelled from the first one) and now has a lot of interviews for ortho? that’s not fair at all. from what im hearing, ortho residents are telling their program directors about her. hopefully new interview spots open up if they revoke her spots 🙏

While some programs may hint to applicants that they will be ranked to match, I feel some provide hints of interest when they have no intention of actually ranking you very high. At the end of the day the best strategy has and will always be to set up your rank list based on where you want to go the most~

Really happy to be here (as are my co residents.)
Our PD is here and here only. He's also the GOAT. The program has only gotten better since he took over a few years ago.

I visited Montefiore for 2 days (they offer 2 day visits but they're usually booked for a few months). Lots of modern technology, I saw 5 ortho-surgery cases, Invisalign, Light Force and lots other treatment methods, residents were very happy and their relationship with the faculty is unlike I've seen anywhere else, friendly and open. Director is real cool and comes from private practice background. He gave a class in the morning, and it was the exact same class he gave the week before at a CE course to experienced orthodontists, which I think would be amazing as a resident. I also think UOP, MCG and UMich are strong (I've visited 20 programs) but I prefer a hospital based program.

Now this is more accurate. We are all really happy! Extremely strong clinical training in a great environment.

I personally wouldn't take this at full value either.

1) You are speaking on behalf of all residents when in fact all are NOT really happy.

2) I too have heard about the new program director at Monte and all are not good reviews. One of the major issues that has been said throughout is that he has favorites. I had a visit set back in May but decided not to go because when I asked about the diversity, it was told that minorities rarely get admitted to that program; I believe there are 2 black girls in the program but they might be the first in the program history. And what's crazy about that is, he is a minority himself. He also seeks residents from "powerhouse" schools in the NE, which eliminates many students here in the west coast

3) I have heard about the tuition and the remaining amount of monies that you have to actually utilize to survive in New York city. Combine that on top of the burnout, no thanks.

4) I must cosign and say that there is a consensus on the strong clinical training. But is it really worth the mental strain?

Now mind you, I have not personally visited this program, but from what I have been told by those who had an externship or whom have matriculated through the program, all can't be that great AlignerGuy.

Point of all this back and forth is that you gotta take everything on this forum with a grain of salt. I pretty much disagree with everything you said haha

As you said you did not visit the program, so I would don’t think these claims are justified.

Lol. You disagree with having roughly 20k after tuition and taxes is taken out as being enough for someone to sustain in NYC? Like I said, EVERYTHING can’t be great. All programs have its shortcomings. But to just get on here and to say everything is great is a bit suspect.

But as you said, take everything in here with a grain of salt, including what both you and I say 🙂
 
Long shot.. but is anyone going to Tufts on 10/24 and UConn on 10/25, back to back?

Omg wow please don't take this personal. I've visited Montefiore and I feel compelled to say that after spending 2 days (1 at each site) there it's in my top 3. Dr. Ahmad spent 30 min chatting with me and he is busy with a capital B. Most genuine director I've been around. He's a great listener and we spoke about his passion for cleft care and then he was walking around the clinic holding a baby, who does that lol. I met 2 African American females both were great and so kind. So if they're the only 2 ones who have ever been accepted into the program, that means he is the only director there to ever accept African American females, so that's a good thing right since he brought them in. So yeah extremely diverse , Spanish, Asian, Middle Eastern. The hallway has pics of previous years and def 10 years ago it was less diverse for sure, but it's actually very diverse now so...? Schools rep'd include Rutgers, UConn, Virginia, Harvard, U of Buffalo, Pacific and more. Yeah so most hospital based orthos get 70K or more stipend but Montefiore pays tuition after that stipend so they're left with much less, but I'll take that over these other programs charging 100K+ tuition yearly (robbery). A couple residents told me it takes planning but at least they're not accruing 500K debt to become an ortho and that makes total sense. Resident vibes were cool and working as a team in the clinic. The lectures were interesting too. Tbh I left there really inspired. So that's my 2 cents about that.

I received two interview invitations 2+ weeks after the schools sent out their first wave emails. It might be very rare since I had never heard of that happening, but I’m living proof for others that it could!

I think the main reason for it was due to overlapping and conflicting interview dates/cancellations.

I agree, most likely, the interviews overlapped, and some people had to drop their interviews. Seems like there were a lot of overlap with interview dates this year, which worked out really well for you!

This is not true. I matched to GSO on match day last year. Anything about December is related to post-match which they have position because they are the largest program with 45 students per year.
 
I’ve always struggled with answering the question “so tell me about yourself”…it’s so broad and vague. Do interviewers want what character qualities I think I possess? Do they want me to tell them my extracurricular interests? Am I supposed to go right into talking about my education, work experience and why I want to specialize? I’m never really sure what direction I should go in and if I’m too long winded on this question. Advice?

I fully support and agree with my co-resident’s comment. I respectfully disagree with the comments of you and (orthooooo123). As a current orthodontic resident, I can confidently say that my experience at Monte has been overwhelmingly positive. We are all very happy with the program, and I would choose Monte again without hesitation. It may seem biased, but I firmly believe that our program director’s leadership and the improvements he has implemented have made Monte one of the top programs in the country.

If you haven't visited the program or spoken directly with residents, it’s important to avoid spreading unverified rumors. It's possible that the timing of these comments, right after interview invites were sent, could reflect someone’s disappointment at not receiving an invite or an attempt to discourage others from applying. Regardless, the information shared is inaccurate.

Thank you for understanding, and I hope this clears up any misconceptions.
 
Does anyone know the match statistics for match rates as a function of # of interviews and % matching to their top or top 3 choices etc?
I saw some stats before but can't find them now. Thanks!

I believe it’s 80% match rate with 4-6 interviews.

The numbers vary per year, but in general 60% match first choice, 20% second choice, 12% third choice.
