Hi everyone! This thread is intended to be a gathering place for people who are applying to California schools so that we can support each other.

For those who haven't seen me around, I've been a Cali resident all my life and go to college in Cali as well. Because my family and my boyfriend of 3 years are in state, I'm only applying to schools in Cali because I wouldn't be happy anywhere else.

I'm doing fine in the secondary round, but I haven't gotten Davis or SF yet... I was only verified 16 days ago so I suppose there's still hope!

EDIT: Please continue posting in part 2 of this thread! Hooray for exceeding 1,000 posts!

<sigh> That Davis...

SF is always going to be like that. I'm sure you'll get it sooner or later. There should be a lag due to the prep for the incoming class term. Y'know?

Cool, someone should have done this a long time ago. Good job Silverlinining1! Your numbers look great. You'll get in some where in CA. If you're done with your secondaries, why don't you start working on UC Davis's secondary. It's one of the longests I've done.

That's true. I did that until I got disheartened I didn't get it after a week. 😛 It's not as lengthy as it sounds... I believe 6 600 char? It's not too bad. 3-4 healthy sentences about your best of the best activities, overcoming a burden, why medicine, and the unique influential person. 😛

LoL, I'm not done with my other secondaries yet. I'm actually just starting to write now! I had a math final on Saturday, so I started jotting down ideas after I finished with my class.

How are you all faring in the process?

I want to die. LoL. In all honesty, I'm in a similar position to you as far as receiving secondaries. I did complete all of them now. Stanford being my latest feat. Although, I did get SF and so I'm rooting for you on receiving that soon.

Do you know if SF only sent secondaries to residents. I'm out of state, but CA is where I want to go. My mom and sisters live in HI, so it's a little closer to home for me. I got secondaries from SD and LA, which I was excited about, but SF would be my first choice.

Thanks!

Yes, a few OOS have received it. They are going a bit slower and if you were verified recently they probably haven't gotten to you yet.

My last secondary is Stanford and then I'm all done!

I was verified 7/10....boo!

hey everyone! i'm also a fellow CA resident...does anyone know the lag time between submitting a UC secondary and hearing a decision for the interview?

Not sure, since there are no UC interviews yet this cycle, as far as I know. I am going to research old threads and see if anything comes up.

EDIT:
--Here's a thread with some info http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=355593
--narc said this: I was complete for UCI in july and UCLA mid-late August. Invites for both came a few weeks later (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=332902)

UCSD is the last secondary I have to do. It's sooo long. I'm glad I can actually apply this year. They had harsher LOR requirements last year.

Got all the CA secondaries except SF and Davis...haven't completed any yet :\

STILL waiting for LORs to roll in

Good luck to everyone:luck:

It does seem kind of long compared to the other essays that might be 200 words or so... But oddly, my first draft of my personal statement was more autobiographical in nature (had experiences from childhood) so I'll probably be using some examples from that!
Good luck to everyone:luck:
Thanks - you too!

Nice. Vanderbilt's secondary question is an autobiography too. Good thing I already finished that. I just have to make few adjustments to it for UCSD.

I have all of them except for SF. I've turned all the ones I have in except for Stanford...

Davis was brutally long with those 9 essays... yeah they weren't long but that was worse b/c you had to cut other essays down or write completely new ones.

I think I'd actually be really happy to stay home here at SC, we'll see what happens with the whole process though 🙂

Yeah, Davis was pretty cruel. They had an initial section w/ 3 essays, then once you thought you were done, you go the next section and get pwned with 6 more essays.

6 """""optional""""" essays that are "used in the initial screening process"

Sounds optional to me...

yes, those last 6 are optional. still, it would be wise to take advantage of those essays.

The UCs I applied to (all except SF) have had my verified AMCAS for about 3 weeks and have yet to send me a secondary/reject me pre-secondary. I think they hate me 🙁.

🙁 I'm sorry! I have hope that they're still considering you and will send you some secondaries soon!

No worries. UCs are slower than everyone else in the country. 3 weeks is too early to say anything. Good luck:luck:

How come everyone has an official thread except me?

<shakes fist at SDN Gods>

Jump at the bit when you think of an official thread you can make and you don't see it yet 😉
Well my AMCAS has been submitted already. Now I don't want one.

<-- not bitter

Hey BTW, does Stanford have a premed committee? How early did you get your letters in?

No, we don't have a premed committee. I have 5 letters from profs/lecturers. All my letters were in by August 15; the letter service at Stanford is very efficient, so I was able to send them out for secondaries right away, even though I'm still working on the essays!

Does anyone have the "Application Complete" status box checked off on UC Irvine's status page? It says that they've received every one of my secondary application materials, but it doesn't say whether I'm complete or not.

Don't sweat it. If they have all the material then they have to print it out or something like that for you to achieve the complete status. Basically, they're just collecting and not doing anything with them at the moment. When they start doing something they'll give you a complete. (I called a couple weeks ago)

Odd. I'm not complete, so I can't help you =/

They listed my payment as received yesterday, just 3 days after I snail-mailed a check - not bad. My LORs were sent the next day and still aren't in, though (it's been just 3 days, so I shouldn't worry).

nice. thanks for the info.

Howdy!

Just got through the 2007 Application cycle and I survived. Good luck to all the CA hopefuls and other applicants! :luck:

Hi! I remember you 🙂 I lurked in the 2007 cycle threads, even though I was not applying yet. Many congrats on becoming a UCSF student! Hope you enjoy it!

Hey guys..

I was wondering.. how long did it take for yourUSC status page to show that your LOR were received? Mine was sent out on 08/09 but it still shows incomplete on the status page

i accidentally checked the 2 letters from professor rather than packet from a committee... do you think that has anything to do with how long it's taking?

thanks!

Sorry I can't help - my letters were sent 8/15 and have not yet arrived.

For me, USC took about two weeks after I knew they received it for my status to change.

I have a quick question that you guys may be able to help me out with. I'm an out-of-stater that'll be living in CA for my gap year. I'm really hoping to get into a school near LA because I'd like to be close to my fiance. Every other school that I've applied to has sent me a secondary but UCLA, UCSF, UCI and UCSD have not. I took the MCAT a few weeks ago, so is it likely that they're just waiting for those scores? Did any of you get secondaries from them without MCAT scores?

The UC's screen. They need to review your application and scores before SELECTing you for a secondary. Having said this, you should get their secondary as a IS applicant. I haven't known one to get rejected pre-secondary, except maybe UCSF.

If you can get residency in CA during your gap year - DO SO! Once you are in a UC its really hard to get residency. Its basically a catch 22 - the school says you can have in-state tuition once you get residency and the state says you can have residency once you get in-state tuition. Apparently there are "loopholes" around this but they're tough and kind of risky so I recommend you get it before you get in school if possible.

As far as your question - as someone else has said they screen - so they won't send you a secondary until they have your MCAT scores. Also, they're pretty slow with OOSers so be patient. And while I wish you good luck and honestly hope you get in - I know how hard LDRs are...don't get your hopes up too much. Most of the UCs are rough on OOSers. UCI is the worst - as far as I know there is one OOSer in our class. The others are open to OOSers but they're pretty number oriented and there are so many instate candidates that its tough for OOS applicants unless you are truly creme of the crop.

:luck: to all of you. Just make sure they know you're interested and do your best on convincing them you belong there.

Hey, I was verified first day possible for the AMCAS. I haven't received UC Davis yet but I have all the other including UCSF. I'm a bit shocked since SF sent me one.

I'm applying MD/PhD. Is anyone applying MD/PhD and received an secondary from Davis? or do they just not like me?

I'm kinda in the same boat, but MD app. It's odd. Although, I haven't really heard of many people not getting the apps for SF..despite the screening...

I don't know how easy it is to get Cali residency. For undergrad at the UCs, wasn't the requisite duration of stay measured in years?

I know some folks from UCD and UCI who got rejected pre-secondary from their own alma maters. Sad times.

Well I have every UC except SF, including UCD... who knows.

i got UCLA, UCI, and UCD.

No love from UCSF and UCSD.

I guess my situation seems more reasonable.

I really want UCSF, so hopefully it comes soon.

🙁

you think you have it bad. my AMCAS hasn't been verified yet!

Yeah, that's a good point. Does anyone know about California residency rules?

Honestly, I don't know much about it - just that this guy was saying that once you're actually in school its pretty much impossible and he wishes he'd gotten it before he started.

Yeah I think Cali's pretty anal about residency. I guess there are some benefits to having been born here 🙂
