Anyone else feel wildly discouraged from the lack of interviews this cycle? Was getting interviews for specialties in Peds/Endo/OMFS/Perio this difficult 3-5 years ago? Applying to 20+ programs and barely getting 1 interview seems impossible if you're a good candidate with a strong CV beyond just your DMD/DDS (MS degree, AEGD, research, multiple years in practice, good LORs, good PS). Has everyone post-COVID given up on general dentistry?

I feel like it’s such a multifaceted “issue”. This is my speculation: general dentistry used to be a bread-and-butter gig. “Super” GPs weren’t as common or as pushed for as today. And being a super GP takes years and years of work outside the office, a lot of legal-liability and honestly just a big headache (imagine how much armamentarium you have to keep stocked at all times 🫠). Then you think….if you were to invest 2-3 years, you could specialize, have a much smaller scope of practice, work less and make more. Another thing being….dental school is so incredibly inexpensive now. If you want to pay back loans quick…you need to make more money off the bat, and that usually means specializing.

So yeah…more and more people are specializing and it’s getting more competitive.

Getting 0-1 interviews for 30 programs as a strong candidate seems to be the norm now.

I applied to ~25 programs last cycle and received interview invites for 13 of them. Anecdotal of course but I don't think it's a huge issue, especially for peds which isn't as difficult as other specialties to get into.

Any repercussions if I accept interview invite, but then find that it's date is conflicting with another program that I want to go to more, so then I cancel it at a later date? (Since all these interviews are clustered so closely and I'm limited in travel funds at this time)

It's courtesy to decline an interview as early as possible so that someone else might have an opportunity to interview. There are generally no repercussions though.

I don't think this is an anomaly. Like I said, my results were similar. In my case, I had about a 3.5 GPA, a class rank just outside 1/3, and about a decade of experience (which some programs liked and some didn't). I asked my faculty from dental school and 1 of my former employers for LORs.

3.74 is decent, probably slightly higher than average. I applied to a mix but after experiencing both during interview tours, I was mostly interested in hospital based programs.
