any tips you can share for the MCAT?

I’m working on a detailed PM for you!

Just a disclosure, I spent 2-3 weeks studying, so I think my methods would mostly benefit those who are cramming or need a last minute review. (That's why I don't want to post it publicly.) I hope you'll find something useful in it though.

Hate to be "that guy", but could you PM me the study tips too? I'm looking to take the January '17 exam.

Congrats and goodluck!

Hello everyone,
I just want to gauge my chances of being granted interviews for this application cycle. Two years removed from undergrad (B.S Biotechnology 2014).

Stats:
-sGPA- 2.67
-cGPA- 2.9ish
-MCAT 23- 5/10/8 (took it on Jan 2015)
-New mcat - practice scores are indicating a 503-508 (writing this Saturday)
-1.25 years of undergrad research (biofuel and plants though)
-two student organizations for last two years
-shadowed two podiatrist 14 hrs first one, 32 hrs second one
-one rec from PI, one rec from biotech professor/advisor and one rec from podiatrist who I shadowed last year

Now, not to make excuses for myself, but I would like to provide some background story.
Undergrad, first year I ended up with a 1.8 due to working 30 hrs a week and skirting away from my responsibilities at school (wasn't sure if I wanted to do pod) The subsequent years my grades would roller coaster. 2.8, 3.2, 4.0 (summer), 2.9, 3.0, 3.6, 3.3
I had a girlfriend at that time and played games excessively while trying to balance my studies, research, and working 30+ hrs a week.
Never took orgo 2 before I graduated because it wasn't needed. Post grad, my mom (single mother- lower class, avg salary of 28k a year), underwent an ankle ligament reconstruction surgery and at that moment I started becoming more interested in pod. Sadly to say, lack of drive, lack of direction, and being the first one in my family to graduate from college, I entered limbo. Tried taking orgo 2 at a CC, but had to W due to grades that started to deteriorate. Needed money to support my mom and sis when my mom was recovering post-op and had to work part time. For a whole year during 2015 I did some "pre pod" stuff and then worked and then tried to discover myself. End of 2015, I got a full time job (which I am still at now) as a regulatory specialist for a chemical company to pay off loans and bills at home. I decided that I have put my own life on hold for long enough and I wish to take the next step. My stats are what they are, my MCAT hopefully can be better. Going back to get a masters won't be cost-effective and I can't afford it.
Sorry for the long rant, but this is my situation and I wish to know if I have a shot (top choice would be NYpod so I can be close to home and my family).

I have came to accept that I ****ed up royally during the most important years of my life and I just wish to do the best I can from here on out.

First of all, very refreshing to see a dude take responsibility and own up. That attitude will get you far. Combine that with a stellar work ethic and I promise you you can get in and people will like you.

Both GPAs are low. If a masters is out of question, have you considered post-bac or retaking core sciences and getting all As? May put you a year back but it would do wonders for your GPA. Get both to a 3.0-3.2 and you have a shot.

For mcat, never take anything for granted. I was pushing 502-503 on a good day on practices but ended up with 493-496 on actual (took it 3 times....heh). Work your ass off for it and see if you can score a solid 500. It'd help you loads if you could score higher to offset GPA.

Research and shadowing are on point. No shame there and you shouldn't have to do any more than that.

As for your personal life- You gotta get off the couch and quit the gaming on certain days man. I was exactly like you with the gaming. It was hella fun and I still keep up with it sometimes, but when you have work at 9am and your whole team is getting rektd on a biased server at 1am...I just had to put down the mouse and just go to bed. Sleep and priorities man.

So my personal advice (I'm sure a lot of other peeps on here have solid advice for you as well):

1) Kill the MCAT. Kill it.
2) Retake core-sciences at local CC and get all As
3) Get back in shape, eat a clean diet, and you can still game but limit it. Know when to put it down. Don't let your gf take away from you trying to get into the career you want either. Put your foot down and tell her how important it is that you get this **** figured out.

You have potential man. Everything rides on how bad you want it.

Thanks dude. That meant a lot to me.

Thing about re-taking/taking courses at a CC is that most science classes are offered during the day time and I work a full 9-5 job. I can't go part-time because my company is relatively small and I am next in line to become the manager of my regulatory department. If I quit, I won't be able to pay off my loans or help support my family. It really sucks how there's no flexibility/compromise in terms of working full-time and taking courses at a

Thanks for your advices on personal life. I believe you will be glad to hear that I picked up weight training my last year of college and have been fairly active going to the gym on a consistent basis now.
I actually cut computer games out of my life and only play mobile games every now and then. I know I can stay at my regulatory job and lead a mediocre average life, but I don't want that.

Question now would be, assuming I score a 502 (pretty confident that's what I can get). If I apply this cycle, would I get any interview invites? Cause if I know there's a chance of being able to start my career in podiatry, I can drop my current job and focus solely on taking courses at CC during the Jan 2017-June2017 period.

Thank you very much! Your response meant a lot to me.

Definitely will try to slaughter this MCAT. Took the sample yesterday and got around 75 percentile so looking at like 504-510 and doing the scored practice exam tonight. Previous attempts at FL's were usually around 502-508.
Issue with taking core science courses at CC is the fact that it conflicts with work. I can't go part-time here because I am next in line to take over my manager's position (small company, small regulatory department) If there were night classes, oh that would solve so many problems. I'm used to long days so it wouldn't be an issue..
Around end of 2014 my gf and I broke up and I started hitting the gym again. Now, I am with a very supportive gf who was also a catalyst for me deciding to try and embark on my podiatry route. I stopped gaming besides the every now and then candy crush on the phone and 2k16 on weekends. I gym twice a week and keep myself physically active. Life has taken a turn for the better after I decided to accept my responsibilities and own up to my mistakes and failures.

Question now is, with my sGPA 2.6ish, cGPA 2.9ish, 23 mcat (~497 after conversion) solid chance at 500+ mcat this time, 40ish hrs of shadowing, 1.25 years of research, 3 recs, working 30+ hrs weekly since I was 18, and working a full time job in my field right now, will I have a CHANCE of getting interview invites? (esp from NYpod)
Will be applying to all 9 schools (maybe not AZpod due to hard cutoffs or DMU) so 7 schools.

The smaller schools like AZ and DMU will for sure have cutoffs like you've mentioned

"The profile of the average incoming first year student includes a 3.4 GPA and an overall MCAT score of 25. To be most competitive, you should possess a science and overall GPA over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. It is recommended that candidates with less than a 2.75 grade point average consult the Office of Admissions prior to applying."

Above was taken directly from NYCPM admissions page: http://www.nycpm.edu/admission.asp

Wish there was a student who could give you more info.

I'd try giving the school a call and see where you can go from there. Your cGPA is pretty dam close to 3.0. Now remember, when applying through AACPMAS, that system does NOT take into account grade replacements. My gpa for sure went lower because of that.

Applying early and to the bigger schools such as Kent, Scholl, Barry (can't remember the other ones) may yield better results. I think with a 500 on MCAT, you have a shot this cycle for those schools. Even if you applied after you take your mcat, still plenty of time to get invites.

If you have to support your mom I can understand why you've got your heart set on NYCPM.

By the time your MCAT comes out, I think you'll have all the cards you need to make a more accurate decision on what you want to do. Namely: 1) take a gap year with good MCAT score in hand so you can work and take your time with apps maybe even CC courses, 2) apply this cycle immediately without fixing GPA.

EDIT: Your 497 (23 old) is within average ranges for interviews and acceptances. Only caveat are the GPAs.

Thanks dude. That meant a lot to me.

cGPA: 3.25ish
sGPA:3.1ish
MCAT: Took today, fairly confident I did okay, but lets say I get a 495. I have a previous score of 493.
ECs:
-Radiology cancer research internship ~ 320ish hours
-Shadowing miscellaneous MDs and DOs ~ 100ish hours
-New medical scribe ~ 200ish hours so far
-Currently shadowing a podiatrist. 10 hours so far. Plan to get at least 20-30 hrs.

I plan to apply to all nine as soon as I get my scores back in September. Any advice?

Both GPA and MCAT are with in average ranges.

September is not late at all. Make sure you've turned in transcripts to AACPMAS and have personal statement ready to go.

Shadow and get that solid rec letter. Should be no prob getting interview invites.

Should I submit an app for Temple?

Left it off because I didn't think I'd get in due to the competitiveness. First choice is CSPM.

Any ideas?
3.1 uGPA , 3.75 gGPA with 496 MCAT.

Don't submit an app to a school you couldn't see yourself actually attending. I wouldn't not submit an app just because I was worried about not getting in. The competitiveness of all the schools is about the same, at the end of the day the stats of the entering class of each school are comparable.

Hey Guys,

I am looking to apply to NYCPM and Temple this cycle (hopefully by January/February 2017) and I was wondering what my chances are based on these stats.

cGPA: 3.4
sGPA: 3.2
MCAT: awaiting my score of this past Aug. 5th (expecting something low unfortunately- around 485-90)
ECs: EMT-b for 2 years, volunteer at a local ambulance corp for 3 years, 4 year DII college athlete and captain senior year, won a Biology research internship this past summer, strong letters of rec (7)

Any honest opinions welcomed.

**Also, I am going to consider retaking my MCAT again this coming January if need be. Hoping to raise it about 5 points or so at the very least.

Thanks!

You'll probably be interviewed by Temple. They seem to take more into consideration (like your ECs) upfront before extending interview invites. NYCPM seems more interested in the GPAs and MCATs only when extending interview invites, then they'll look at the application as a whole later on. You may still get invited there as well but I would think you have a higher chance for Temple.

At least that was my experience between the two.

488-490 is low. Translates to 17-20 on the old one.

If you retake and get 495-497 it should be no problem getting invites. Add to the fact your GPAs are rock solid and you're an athlete / have good extracurrics.

Retake and kill it.

If you get a reasonable score on your upcoming MCAT you should be fine for all the schools. Side note: please don't submit all seven letters of rec. If you have the ability to read them, pick the strongest from the DPM/science professor and submit those.

You'll get into Temple with those stats. CSPM should be fine as well, although I hesitate slightly because of the below average uGPA. Your sGPA will be a great help to you--lean on that during your interview and you should be fine.

GPA's are on the lower side for AzPod and CSPM but you're close enough to get an interview I think. The higher your MCAT, the better your chances. EC's are very good.

1. all except NY
2. cGPA 3.03 /sGPA 3.19
3. MCAT Score 21 (v-9 b-6 p-6)
4. Podiatry Experience 1 semester internship ~175hrs
5. Non-Podiatry Shadowing/Clinical Experience (If Applicable) various shadowing of many different docs, never more then 1wk per speciality
6. Volunteering - religious mission 2yrs, local non profit clinic ~3mo

I'm a return student, worked full time during school, not sure that they look at a resume but if it helps I'd put it in. Would it be worth it to apply this cycle?

You can email your resume to the admissions offices of the schools once they have your app. They'll attach it to your file.

Just submitted my application, oGPA 3.5 sGPA 3.25. MCAT wasn't too great on the first go around but am retaking it 9/9. Surely will get a better score. Plenty of LORs and shadow hours. Cadaver human anatomy Teaching Assistant and plenty of other ECs. What do you think my chances are? When do you think I will hear anything back?

Your chances are very good. Be patient with the application process. I know it seems like it takes forever but you will here back from the schools you apply to within a month.

I applied to all nine schools so we can only hope I get into at least one.

Just a disclosure, I spent 2-3 weeks studying, so I think my methods would mostly benefit those who are cramming or need a last minute review. (That's why I don't want to post it publicly.) I hope you'll find something useful in it though.

Could you also PM your MCAT studying methods? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

You'll do great.

Less whine more practice questions.

Half the battle is mental confidence and stamina.

My undergrad GPA was identical, if not lower than yours and I still got interview invites. Doesn't mean its easy to get in, just means you have to work your butt off in other areas such as ECs, Resesarch, or another degree and exceptional people-person skills to prove to them you can and will be a competent physician. Be able to rationally explain and deficits in your file.

495 itself is solid. See if you can hit 498-500 on practice exams or just the 125 range per section. My practice tests were lower than actual score, but you get to a point where you can tell where you'll score on average the closer the time comes.

Work hard and focus. Don't get distracted with "What ifs?"

Thanks. I've just always set the goal at 500 so it's discouraging I felt bad for like 15 mins. Now time to move on! Friday's almost here so I'll go over the test and do little things the next couple days.

Appreciate it boss.

No prob. I set the same 500 goal. Highest scored on actual was 496. Took it thrice. Imagine my disappointment haha.

But its ok. MCAT taught me how to address weak topics head on and not shy away from it.

Just a stepping stone for boards. Take it as an experience.

Hi everyone! I've been reading this forum for a while and finally decided to post. I graduated college in 2010 and then went into healthcare and research. I didn't have a good gpa at the time due to lack of caring but now I have decided to go back to school so I've started taking science classes and so far have a 4.0 post-bac gpa. I took the MCAT years ago so I just recently retook them since my score was more than 3 years old. Previously I had gotten a 19 (I know, not that great). I didn't do that well in science undergrad classes so now my science GPA is 2.5 and my overall GPA is 3.18. I am also currently taking micro and biochem.

Can anyone provide any input on what my chances are? Is my science GPA way too low for any programs? I'm really hoping to start somewhere next fall and possibly even apply to the january class at NYCPM. Any feedback would be awesome! :)

Did you retake or plan on taking the MCAT again? NYCPM will not consider an MCAT score of older than 3 years. At this time, that sci gpa is low.

I did retake them but have not received my score yet. And I agree the GPA is definitely low. Any recommendations on what I should do?

In that case, if I was in your place, I would apply to the Jan class at NYCPM and wait for their response. If they offer you an interview, then great, otherwise you would know how to improve your app when you apply again (like raising the sgpa). The post-bac gpa would def help and if you receive a competitive MCAT score, then apply to other schools.

I also graduated in 2010 and my plan is to re-take the test in Jan and apply to the sept class.

Yea... I'm also waiting to hear back from someone at the school that said they would look over my stats so unless they tell me otherwise, I'll probably give it a shot for January so I can at least find out where I stand and get some more feedback from them. It seems to still be early in the cycle so maybe that will work in my favor. Thanks for your input and good luck to you!

3.15 cGPA
3.1 sGPA
496 MCAT
50+ hours of shadowing PT, shadowed Pod freshmen year of college, loved it. Had a change of major, haven't shadowed since but scheduled shadowing next Monday with more dates after, pretty solid LOR's, planned 250 hour internship at local clinic next semester.
Applying to NYCPM, Barry, Temple, Scholl, Kent State, and DMU.

Just got an early invitation interview from CSPM SMU. Has anybody else gotten this? What are the interviews like? Do you remember any of the questions and how should I prepare for the interview? This is my first one, so I am not sure how to practice.

considering podiatry, do i have any shot?

2.9 science, 2.9 cumulative. includes post bac work (3.5 post bac). graduated in 2013
487 MCAT
strong healthcare experience, strong LORs
willing to matriculate ANYWHERE
any chance with my low gpa and mcat?

Post bac is solid.

Mcat looks like you didn't even try.

Get MCAT to 493-496 and you have a shot.

I had multiple family deaths in the day leading up to the test, but didn't want to postpone . I actually studied hard for it, just wasn't in the best mental state .

Should I not even apply with my current stats ?

Apply; don't retake

I see.

I highly recommend you retake. Bare minimum I've see is 493 on school websites.

What you can do is turn in your app asap and schedule a retake. Put on the app that you're planning to retake.

Thanks for the advice. Is a Jan retake too late though?

Take it in Jan, get score in Feb. Still have time for interviews til April. Like Bob mentioned, there are people who will get in 1-2 weeks before the semester starts.

Get your app in right now and make sure you mark on that you have a planned retake date.

Your post-bac is pretty high. That combined with ECs should get you 2-3 invites from the bigger schools who will be trying to fill seats.

Hey guys here is the situation I am in
I am a senior at my university and I recently just applied to all 9 schools. I'm getting worried however because some of the schools just have neglected to even just say " hey you suck and see you never" or "hey come on down for an interview". The reason I am so worried is my stats are nothing to brag about. They are terrible.
I have a 2.95 cum
2.94 science
And a 3.4 non science
As for my Mcat it was 487
I have 100+ hour volunteering in a hospital
50+ shadowing a pod
1 year research in developmental genetics in skin disorders
I went to the pod internship at ksucpm
So here is my question if my stats are so terrible, why did schools just not see this and automatically deny me within a few days?

Probably because you're above the threshold for automatic cutoffs. So their policies at that point are to thoroughly review your application. If there's something else in there that they like, you may still have a shot.

If you're rejected, contact the school and ask why. They are generally pretty forthcoming and will tell you how you can improve for your best chance next cycle—in case you don't get in this time around.
