Official Pulmonary Critical Care 2017-2018 Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes...I am having bad feeling from my interviews as well :(

Is it all about interviews or they look a the whole package for ranking? I feel like I am not doing well in my interviews!

Hopefully this isn't news - but don't forget that the NRMP Match system opened up and you'll need to register separately from ERAS in order to create, submit and certify your rank lists!

So at several of the interviews I went to for PCCM 3 years, I ran into a surprisingly large number of non-traditional applicants who were already boarded in IM and about to finish another fellowship and enter PCCM boarded in other specialties! 2 were ultrasounded boarded, 2 were sleep, 3 were renal (!!), 2 were ID, 1 was cardiology (!!). The renal, ID, and cardiology guys all were published in Pubmed when I talked to them. Boy this field has seemingly gotten more attractive and competitive.
Yes! Same experience here. PhDs etc

This is really stress full experience , any statistics about safe number of IVs to match ? For IMGs and AMGs?

Yeah I think the fat lady sung and then went home to have dinner.

4 interviews only - one of the places I interviewed at filled internally out of the match. So in reality, only three shots.
This is worse than applying for residency.
it is worst than applying to residency , OMG . I can only pray at this time . :(

I would really appreciate some input regarding how to rank the following programs,

Tufts
Uni of Miami
UH/ case western reserve university
Uni of Minnesota

Thanks in advance!

Everything is factored but fellowships are small and personality fit matters a lot. People have to consider whether they can tolerate working with you for 3 years.

From the “Charting the Outcomes” 2011 data, 6 seems to be the often quoted number. This is for PCCM.

I think they have a research track which is 4 years instead of 3 years. But otherwise I heard good things about the program.

Good program overall, but leaves something to be desired... Hospital is located right next to Rush and Cook County so there's some competition, and their VA is shared with Northwestern. It's not a lung transplant center, so advanced cases get shipped out to Loyola or U of Chicago. But it does have strong pulm HTN, sarcoidosis, IP programs. They have limited number of spots for their T32 research track, and they're only taking clinical track (traditional 3 years) fellows this year, but it sounded like they can make room for T32 spots if you're really into research (and if you're not, that's perfectly ok too).

Any idea about Med Star Washington Program ? How would you compare it with George Washington program ?

Can anybody share the itinerary for case western metrohealth? Ive interview tomorrow. Cant get hold of cordinator. Thanks

Hey guys,

Having a tough time deciding between two programs.
Upstate in Syracuse - university hospital
Newark Beth - night float system and lung transplant in house

Thanks!

Any other programs which are "off match"?
in NY, Bronx Lebanon, Maimonides, New York interfaith to name a few. But those tend to take in house candidates anyway and they don't leave any information in their website for contact

Any suggestions on UC Davis, Univ of Southern California, Univ of Florida and Univ of South Florida (Tampa). How would you rank them? Any input will be appreciated.

Congrats on those places! UC Davis is an incredible program. U of Florida has excellent programs too.
Good luck with the match.

Guys I got a prematch offer and I have accepted , the Offer is via email and I conformed that too. I am not registered to the NRMP and there are other programs emailing me asking to register , is an email an enough evidence to act upon it ( say I am sorry for those programs , cancel my up coming interview ) OR not ? Please advise . THANKS

Congrats, I have a friend doing the same; I believe as long as you have it in writing via e-mail you are fine. I would be diligent about getting paperwork etc. faxed over immediately so you can get the contract ASAP.

Anyone with opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the bigger NYC programs? Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Mt. Sinai, Montefiore?

Are ppl getting emails from programs to remind them to register to NRMP? If yes , which programs? Is this is a sign that the program will rank you?

Did not get any such emails ): should I be worried?

No such emails here too! Oh God I hope it doesn't mean much. Were you already registered before getting the email?

Guys they will not ask you if you are registered! If you are not they need your NRMP number to rank you ! So if you registered you shouldn't be worried! I didn't register that is why

Thanks , but my program ( the prematch one ) said they will connect me with coordinator and haven't heard from her yet ! I am shall just politely tell those other PDs that I am out of match or shall I wait for a letter ? Contract ? I don't know .

It was a long journey and its finally over ! accepted a Prematch in CCM and will be withdrawing from the match . I am so happy and relieved at last . wish every body a great match ! good luck every one .

really looking for guidance on the following programs... Columbia, Cornell, NYU, Mt. Sinai, Montefiore?

I didn't interview at all 5 programs you listed so take this with a grain of salt, but I got the sense that Columbia was the big academic program with T-32, whereas the other programs were a bit more balanced between clinical and research training. There are some differences (e.g. Columbia is the only place w/ significant lung transplant and ECMO exposure if I'm not mistaken, but also relative lack of airway training because anesthesia does all the intubations; NYU is the only program that really has rotations at multiple hospitals, including the VA; Mt Sinai has collaborations with National Jewish Health; Cornell has a large volume of rheum population w/ ILD that gets referred from Hospital for Special Surgery; etc.) - all minor differences for me personally, but could make or break a deal depending on what you're looking for.

If your dream is to become an NIH-funded academic physician then Columbia is probably the best bet, but honestly all of those places will give you a solid training and it felt like they all had enough flexibility to help you achieve your goals. You might wanna just research the unique niche of each of the programs and decide which one best suits your interests.

Any input about Jackson Memorial/ Miami? Heared they mainly take in-house candidates, does worth to go for the IV?

Does anyone have any comments or input they can give on Carilion Clinic/Virginia Tech/Roanoke Virginia?

I'm torturing myself over my rank list right now.

Do you guys know if program director check the medicine board score to rank? For those people who is applying after their residency...

Any input would be highly appreciated.

National reputation wise, Columbia is definitely #1. They maybe Cornell/NYU, and then Sinai/Monte
Columbia offers more robust pulmonary training due to lung transplant and the associated advanced lung diseaes. Has a T32 so funding for 4th years if youre interested in research. Down side is more limited hands on skills, weaker airway training. If you dont speak Spanish, will have a harder time given location of teh hospital and its service area.

Cornell and NYU both more balanced with Cornell now transitioning to be more research heavy. Cornell is now 1.5 years clinical, 1.5 years research, with a lot of fellows going into the lab. Still good hands on training with intubations, bronch procedures etc. Good ILD exposure but no other pulmonary subspecialties. NYU much more clinical with 2 years clinical 1 year research. Most research tends to be related to 9/11 stuff (due to available grant money) or some kind of more clinical thing. Great clinical training. New chairman seems to really working on expanding NYU's presence and bringing in more things like lung transplant and interventional pulmonary.

Sinai and Monte both have lower national reputations. My impression was that Monte was a really legit critical care oriented program. Sinai was kind of not great at any particular thing but not bad at anything. Just very blah. Division head is not a known to be a very pleasant person to work with

You should try to speak with the current 2nd/3rd year fellows at these programs to see what their career plans are and get a sense whether thats what you want to be as well. You can look at the website to see who the fellows are and maybe look up profiles to get a sense of what you can accomplish in 3 years at each of those places

I don't think anyone has access to your score but you. They can check to see if you passed however, but that seems like a lot of trouble.

Are you already registered? If not, they might remind you but I’m registered and I haven’t gotten any such emails. Would be curious to know if they r just reminding their chosen candidates to sign up :/

Ya , am already registered and I did not get any such emails Al's . Wanted to know if any registered candidate is getting these emails , which may indicate the program is ranking the candidate.
