*~*~*~*Official TMDSAS Questions Thread 2021-2022*~*~*~*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do all TMDSAS schools have the same day they stop sending out IIs? Also how does acceptance of the waitlist work for schools? Im assuming they notify you after March, but with match how does that work?
Some stop inviting in December and others not until January.
I invite you to check out my other Texas page here: The Republic of Texas XL: If you are riding a high horse, there ain't no way to get down off it gracefully.

I have some explanations of pre-match things over there, and a link to a great TMDSAS video that explains Match and the Wait List things afterwards.
To the point of your question, after Match Day you could be offered a place on a WL at any school you had placed at a higher rank than the school you matched with. If you don't match, you are also eligible for WL places which will be made to you by email from the individual schools.

When do schools request transcripts? Is it only once you have been accepted?
Yes
Once you have an acceptance, watch for a message from TMDSAS about sending your transcripts to TMDSAS.

After Match Day when you have made your final decision on a school, the school usually also asks for one sent directly to them.

Where can we post reapplication review posts specifically for TMDSAS? Is that allowed on this thread?

Is it unheard of to receive an II this late into the TMDSAS cycle if you were complete in early July? Do adcoms continually go over your app or is it a one pass and done? I am preparing for a reapplication until I see an acceptance but just wanting to gauge my chances.

Interviews will continue through December or January depending on the school. I'd say we're only halfway though interviews.
Once the primary app deadline passes on November 1 the schools will know there are no more new apps coming in, and can assess their total applicant pool for more interview invitations.

Do any Texas schools send Rs before Match Day? I don't know where to look for that information.

It’s pretty rare, but this year U of Houston sent out some rejections in August.
The usual thing is for the TMDSAS schools to let everyone stay in the running until Match Day.
Since we do have Match Day as the formal end of our application cycle in one sense, if you have had no TMDSAS interviews by Match Day you are effectively rejected from them all.
If you have had at least one TMDSAS interview, either you will match, or not. Without a match, you still have a chance to be accepted from a wait list over the next few months.

Not sure if this is an appropriate thread to ask this in, but I had a quick question about the qualifications for URM. So I identify as Latino since I’m Brazilian, but was wondering if Brazilians are considered URM? I read somewhere that while most South Americans fall under the URM category, a few, such as Argentinians for example, are actually ORM. Again, not sure if this information is even public domain to begin with, but if anyone had some insight I would love to know. Thanks in advance 🙂
I’m probably not the most qualified voice on this but I think that may be because Argentinians are considered Caucasian whereas most people of South American countries would fall under Latin origin. (Which means Brazilians would be considered URM… I think)

how do you know if transcripts are received by TMDSAS?
Log into TMDSAS, then on the right side there's a tab called "Status". If you scroll down, near the bottom it lists the transcript(s) they need and if they've been received yet. For reference, I sent one of my transcripts 10 days ago but it still doesn't say it's been received.

Hey guys, I was just curious but has anybody heard back from any TMDSAS schools recently? I'm following all the threads and there seems to have been mostly silence for the past 2-3 weeks. Also, do all TMDSAS schools have their last interview dates in January?

It has been pretty quiet, but there have been a few announcements of acceptances at EnMed, TCOM, U of Houston, and UTSW since November 1.
All the TMDSAS schools have to be done with interviews before our Feb 18 rank preference deadline. I think a few might do their last interviews the first week of February but most will wrap up in January.

P.S. I am constantly updating this list of when schools send out interview invitations here: #2
and for announcements of people getting acceptances, watch the individual school threads.

3 TMDSAS schools have not offered acceptances so far: Dell, Baylor, and Long.

Thank you so much! I was actually looking for your interview invitations since i've seen it before but I just couldn't find it (I obviously didn't look hard enough).

And end of January/beginning of February is what I was expecting. Idk why though but it just seems this cycle is quieter than last year's based off the sdn thread. I guess I'm just getting impatient, there's still approximately 2 months of opportunities left so I should just continue staying patient.

How far out are schools scheduling interviews? On MSAR, Long specifically states that their last interview date will be December 18th, 2021. Looking at the thread that Wysdoc has posted up regarding interview invites, the latest one from Long is October 22nd. Assuming they are scheduling up to a month out, it seems like we are slowly coming to the end of the cycle...at least for Long!

Another question, which schools provide application feedback? I was rejected from U of H a month or two ago and I called their admissions office to see if they provided feedback and they said they are not offering that service.

I only post up the interview news people share on the public threads, but I think there are more that people haven't shared with me. 5 schools on the list have sent out invitations since Nov 1.

Schools that give feedback and/or reapplicant workshops LATER (not during the active application cycle) are, to my knowledge, Texas Tech Lubbock, Texas Tech El Paso, and Long. If anyone knows for sure of more, please comment here.

@wysdoc How do TMDSAS schools view a letter of interest? (No II to that school yet, and I would only send to one school in particular I am really interested in)

Pre-interview, the only things you could send of value would be a new semester of grades, an improved MCAT score, an award, or a publication. You also need to see if this school takes any additional info from you after the secondary - UTSW and TCU are two that do not.

Ok thank you very much. I figured no need to contact unless it was substantial

No II gang wya?? Probably will start my reapplication process after thanksgiving considering I have gotten zero attention thus far. Very disappointed to be in this position but trying to remain positive at the same time. Hopefully I get something here soon...even an R would feel kinda nice at this point.

I’m sorry you haven’t heard back yet. You have great stats and good ECs. I know it’s hard to hear (I don’t like it either but it’s true) but you definitely still have a chance this cycle. There’s 3 months left of interviews that you could get. I’m also similar to your situation (516 MCAT, but lowish GPA) and I’m waiting to hear back from most TMDSAS schools. I’d remain optimistic till at least December, which I am going to do. I do hope you get a II soon.

Has anyone pre-matched to Texas Tech El Paso and if so, would you mind sharing your stats? Interviewed 2 weeks ago and I find myself checking my email like a crazy person!

Go to the Texas Tech El Paso thread, hit the search looking glass at the top, choose "this thread", and enter the word prematched.

There are several who pre-matched and you can see their information there.

For Letters of Intent, should we be sending them to a school (post-II) if we have no other acceptances? Or is it something that's really only valuable with an acceptance to leverage? I'm honestly not sure so I would like some advice. Thanks.

Seriously, with theTexas Match system you state your intent by marking a school #1 on your rank list.
If you don’t end up matching to your 1, then after match day is the time for your letters to try to get off a WL.

A&M also has a reapp workshop, I attended after last cycle and it was great!!

Next year there will likely be one more UT System school to apply to, in Tyler, Texas.
The school has been approved by the UT Regents and has been in the application pipeline for LMCE approval for the last 2 years.

They are far enough along and confident enough that they have selected their inaugural dean, and anticipate hearing a decision from LCME in February 2022. Like the new school UT Houston's regional mission, they will seek applicants who intend to return to practice in the Tyler TX region.

Because several of our current Texas medical schools send students for MS3 and MS4 rotations to Tyler, when the new school's classes reach 3rd and 4th year I expect there will be an effect on students that used to come to Tyler from those other schools. We shall see how that plays out.

When updating Fall 2021 semester grades, is there anything we need to do other than inputting the grades into TMDSAS? Are they automatically sent to schools? Thanks in advance!

You will input them in your TMDSAS portal just the way you did when you applied. They do get forwarded to schools automatically. If your grades are nice, you might send a quick email to schools letting them know you had a good semester & have sent a grade update.

Thanks for the information! Would sending an email be preferable for pre-ii or post-ii schools?

If your only update is your new semester of grades, it would be of some possible benefit to send to schools which haven't interviewed you.
The other ones - they were OK with your grades before!

Are there stats available for the average number of II's received by Texas applicants? I feel like I've seen this data somewhere, but can't seem to find it. It might have possibly been AAMC applicant data.

Not that I know of right now.
However, the director of TMDSAS has said that in mid-February they are going to publish some data about the application cycle that will be more in-depth than prior reports. Can't wait to see the new format and information.

If I am starting a new job at a different company (still in the same industry), do I need to update each individual school about it?

I don't think you do - future/planned activities are something that can't be updated on the TMDSAS app itself, and schools know that future plans may change.
Updates for academics, like "I can't find a place to take this pre-req" or "I won't graduate this spring" or "I failed 2 classes my final semester" on the other hand would be a necessary (if sad) update to schools where you have interviewed or been accepted.

Thanks for the response. Does this also imply that I shouldn't update the schools I've been accepted to and interviewed at, unless it's part of a larger update/interest letter?

Here's the holiday Twitter message from TMDSAS:

They're taking time off for the holidays, I suggest you do the same.

Check your email once a day and spend your time talking with family and friends, or set the world record for number of cookies eaten in one day.

Merry Christmas!

Historically, how many more batches of II should we expect from TMDSAS?
Remember the interview schedule is up to each individual school, there’s no TMDSAS standard. I think most schools will finish interviewing at the end of January with a few going over to the first week of Feb

Not as great as I expected, had an interview at my top choice and that's it. I'm trying to go by the "all you need is one" motto but as a reapplicant who made significant improvements to my app this cycle, its been hard.
Good luck! I had one II this cycle as well. Hopefully, the "all you need is one" motto turns out to be true for the both of us.

Also, @wysdoc when are our rank lists due? I assume schools will ask for transcripts after you match as well?

You will need to rank every school where you interviewed, on your TMDSAS portal, before 5pm on Feb 18th.
If you had one interview, rank that school #1.

TMDSAS has great instructions about this on their web page, so it’s a good idea to review them by early February.
If you use Facebook, I’m sure they will have a Facebook Live session for your questions about the Match in a few weeks.

Ranking your schools for the TMDSAS Match:

Hey y'all, as the TMDSAS interview season winds down, it's time to learn about (or refresh your memory about) the TMDSAS Match.

Since your rank order lists for every place that has interviewed you are due By 5pm Friday February 18,
this means the last possible interview day for a TMDSAS school is February 17th. And heck yeah, Texas Tech El Paso is doing some interviews on the 17th! Other schools may end their interview schedules at various times, I don't have any list.

TMDSAS and Texas Health Education Service will be giving a live presentation on the TMDSAS Match on January 18 at Noon Central Time Zone.

I recommend that you go watch their Match video first, here :

AFTER watching this archived video a time or two, you will be ready to attend the live presentation on Jan 18 at noon.
You won't have your cameras on like a zoom meeting, but if you are watching it live you can type in your questions using the chat function and get them answered in real time by the TMDSAS leaders who know the final answers.

You can watch it on Facebook on the TMDSAS page, or on the YouTube channel if you don't use Facebook.

Does it look to y'all like this year is going to be a lot more match heavy than in years past?? There could just be less people posting but it seems to me like there are less pre-matches overall (both on SDN and among friends and family).

That’s what I was thinking!

Has anyone received a request for transcript yet? I have not received an email, but they mentioned in a message to me that I should send transcripts to them when I was updating grades.

That message to you ‘was’ their request for you to send a transcript. Later on the school where you matriculate will probably also ask you to send a transcript to them directly.
