The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry is still currently offering one non-categorical internship position for the 2025-2026 academic year.

All applicants must obtain an active PA dental license.
Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns in the program.

Opportunities:
I. Interns will have the opportunity to perform the full range of dentoalveolar procedures, benign pathology, implant placement, bone and soft tissue augmentation, consultations/treatment planning and managing medically complex patients.
II. Covering the outpatient sedation center, completing more complicated procedures under moderate/deep intravenous sedation, and assisting with the sedation itself.
III. Taking dental and facial trauma call at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia (Level I Trauma Center). The call is busy, but is split with Plastics, ENT, and a separate 4 Year OMFS program, so it is not as frequent, offering interns more time for studying.
IV. Managing hospital inpatient care and prerounding/rounding.
V. Participation in all didactic activities, including attending weekly lectures, case presentations/case review, grand rounds, and scholarly activity.
VI. Second and First-Assisting on OR cases at the hospital. Given the nature of the program with one resident per year and incomplete coverage at times; there will be opportunities for the interns to first-assist with the attending on larger cases, offering a unique experience at the intern level.

Salary/Benefits: Non-categorical interns are paid through the Dental School. Terms to be discussed.

Please contact Dr. Pooja Gangwani at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.

Mount Sinai / Jacobi Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Opportunity

July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027

We are now accepting applications for internships to begin next July.

The Mount Sinai Hospital / Jacobi Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program annually offers several OMFS internship positions. These one-year positions are designed for the candidates that are genuinely interested in pursuing an OMFS residency and would like to experience a full scope OMFS residency.

Duties will include: clinic coverage, on call coverage, ER, OR and inpatient management of OMFS patients. Interns will also attend all didactic lectures and conferences. Our interns will work side by side with our OMFS residents and attending surgeons. Our OMFS residency accepts 4 residents per year (we have 2 6-year positions and 2 4-year positions annually).

There are three distinct intern tracks:

Jacobi Medical Center / North Central Bronx / Mount Sinai West

Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital (NCB) where the intern will spend the majority of his/her time, encompasses a busy Level 1 Trauma Center in the eastern Bronx. Additionally, our interns will spend approximately 2 months in Manhattan at the Mount Sinai West Hospital. At Jacobi and NCB we have 2 busy outpatient clinics. Our department (GPR, pediatric dentistry, and OMFS) manages over 35,000 out-patient visits per year.

The Mount Sinai Hospital / Elmhurst Hospital Center

The Mount Sinai Hospital is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Elmhurst Hospital Center is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The interns will divide their time between these two sites. Both sites provide substantial in-patient and out-patient oral and maxillofacial surgery experiences.

James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Bronx VA)

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is a tertiary care 378 bed in and outpatient facility located in the west Bronx that serves the health care needs of veterans in the New York Metropolitan area. The Bronx VA treats approximately 26,000 veterans annually and has an on-site general practice residency in dentistry that is sponsored by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Department of Dentistry.

Our interns are an integral part of the OMFS team. Many of our past interns were successful in matching with programs immediately following completion of the internship. Successful candidates will be bright, self-motivated and eager to become part of a dynamic OMFS team. Additionally, they must have completed at least a PGY-1 GPR or AEGD before the start of the program. The OMFS internships are fully funded positions. Salaries start at the PGY-2 level.

Interested parties should email their CV to our internship director ([email protected]), Dr. Kerry McEntee.

I'm a current intern at UoP and have had a very positive experience so far. The exposure goes well beyond dentoalveolar, as I've had to opportunity to be first assist on even cancer resection and reconstruction cases. The mentorship has been excellent, and as a bonus, being in San Francisco has been a great experience outside of the hospital and clinic as well. I would highly recommend applying for a non-cat at UoP.

The University of Kentucky has a non categorical opening for the 26-27 year. From a skills perspective it has to be one of the best in the country. In addition, the non-categorical intern will rotate at a community dental clinic with full autonomy developing extraction skills, patient management, and working with other dentists. Compensation is PGY-1 salary with benefits. Great OMFS matching rates after the internship. We love to match our non-cats if you have the stats and work hard. Great team to work with.

Can I PM you?

(UPDATE: this position has been filled)

1 Year GPR PGY-2 position with oral surgery concentration available at Yale for 2026-2027:

Yale Oral Maxillofacial Surgery is offering a 1 year internship with a concentration in oral surgery. Due to accrediations for the position, there is a mandatory prerequisite of completion of a 1 year CODA accredited GPR program. This position will act as a first year OMS resident, working in the OMS clinic, in the OR and participating in taking call. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience in OMS and to associate with many of our faculty who are national leaders in OMS and have connections throughout the country and can help you in achieving your goal to match as a categorical resident at an OMS program.

Benefits include:
- PGY-2 Salary at Yale which is estimated to be over $90,000 for 2026-2027
- Excellent training in dentoalveolar OMS and exposure to full scope OMS
- Close proximity to Boston, NYC for easy weekend trips
- Great resident culture. The 1st year and non-categorical residents are not treated any differently and are valuable members of the team.
- Manageable call schedule. While we get plenty of experience to be well trained, we have an excellent GPR program that covers the majority of the tooth calls that come into the ED which significantly lightens the load on the non-trauma call weeks.

If you have completed (or will complete prior to July 2026) a 1 year CODA accredited GPR and are interested in this position, please reach out to [email protected] for steps on applying. Thank you!

Hello Everyone!

Congratulations to those that matched, you earned and deserve it. For those that did not, keep your chin up. There are a lot of opportunities available to grow your experience and your CV. I'm posting about our Non Categorical positions that are available at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, New York.

Our non categorical residents function as interns with duties as follows:
  • Taking primary call - q4-6. Our trauma call is q3 weeks and is split with plastic surgery and ENT, so you get experience without being overloaded. You have backup call with the third year residents for the first 2-3 months while you get the hang of things, so you aren't out on an island. We have a GPR program who take tooth call, so you won't be taking tooth consults in the ED. We offer home call, so you don't have to sleep in the hospital when you're on call. We only cover call at one hospital, so you won't be bouncing between different sites on call.
  • Covering primary patients - you get experience caring for patients that are admitted to our primary service. Again, you have the support of senior residents to help you make decisions on caring for patients.
  • Managing clinic duties - seeing new patients for consults and performing extractions under local anesthesia. You will also be performing biopsies under local anesthesia.
  • Contributing in the OR - You are assigned cases in the OR. Some days you will be in the OR 1-on-1 with an attending for simple pathology or extractions, other days you are assisting the seniors with their orthognathic, trauma, pathology, and TMJ cases.
  • 1 month anesthesia rotation - you are designated one month to rotate through the anesthesia department where you will be able to intubate patients and place lines with the anesthesia residents. This is shadowing experience (unlike the PGY-2 anesthesia rotation), so you won't be managing patients on your own but you will still have the opportunity to see how general anesthesia is provided.
  • Compensation and benefits - $72,808 salary with 4 weeks of paid vacation, benefits include a retirement account, medical, dental, and vision insurance, FSA, HSA, and a child care stipend (for those that qualify). Rochester is a low COL city and many residents own homes.
We are a tight knit resident group at all different stages of life. Several residents have children, while others are fresh out of dental school or a GPR. We have designated social events with our department and we get together for beers after clinic or pickleball on weekends regularly. We have a resident-only bbq in July, a department summer bbq, halloween party, friendsgiving, and several more.

You must have completed a GPR or AEGD in order to be eligible for a non categorical position.

If you are interested then please send your CV to the following people:

Dr. Dina Amin (Program Director) [email protected]
George Lin (PGY-5) [email protected]

Responsibilities and assignments include one half day at University of Michigan Medicine in the clinics and operating rooms. Four and a half days exposed to our high volume dento-alveolar clinic performing third molars, grafts, implants, and pre-prosthetic procedures. You will also teach third and fourth year dental students in the didactic foundation and clinical application of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery procedures. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Opportunity

July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027

We are now accepting applications for internships to begin this July. We have only a few spots remaining.

Hey I thought I’d post this for people applying to Montefiorre. This was an email to me from the coordinator approximately 13 years ago when I first applied and I had been meaning to share it but it sheds truth on doing externships. At least she’s honest and she still works at Monte today.

Although she was more blunt than expected, at least she was honest.

Also why post this on the non-cat thread? You're email clearly is discussing externships. I guess I am just trying to deduce what the goal of this post was exactly? To bad mouth a program?

How am I bad mouthing the program? Monte has a very good reputation.

I’m just showing a fact. I want to let people know who plan to do externships/internship at a program that it may be a waste of their time, money, and mental capacity.

I see. I misunderstood the original post. My apologies.
