The Mount Sinai Hospital / Jacobi Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program annually offers several OMFS internship positions. These one-year positions are designed for the candidates that are genuinely interested in pursuing an OMFS residency and would like to experience a full scope OMFS residency.

Duties will include: clinic coverage, on call coverage, ER, OR and inpatient management of OMFS patients. Interns will also attend all didactic lectures and conferences. Our interns will work side by side with our OMFS residents and attending surgeons. Our OMFS residency is a 6-year program with 4 resident positions per year.

There are three distinct intern tracks:

Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital (NCB) where the intern will spend the majority of his/her time, encompasses a busy Level 1 Trauma Center in the eastern Bronx. Additionally, our interns will spend approximately 2 months in Manhattan at the Mount Sinai West Hospital. At Jacobi and NCB we have 2 busy outpatient clinics. Our department (GPR, pediatric dentistry, and OMFS) manages over 35,000 out-patient visits per year.

Ascension Macomb-Oakland Non-Categorical Position

The PGY1 residents are away at medical school for most of the year so the non-cats function essentially as the PGY1s. This is a great year to gain valuable hands-on experience.

Many of the current residents in the program also completed a non-categorical year at the program. Previous non-cats have a great track record of matching within the program or elsewhere.

Main hospitals: Ascension (Now Henry Ford after acquisition) St. John in Detroit, MI and Ascension Macomb-Oakland in Warren, MI.

Our outpatient clinic is located in Detroit, MI. Non-categorical residents play an active and hands-on role in running the clinic, as the PGY1 residents spend the vast majority of their time away in medical school.

CBSE is not required to apply for this position. This is a paid position.

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry is currently offering two non-categorical internship positions for the 2025-2026 academic year.

All applicants must obtain an active PA dental license.
Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns in the program.
Our program will be accommodating in terms of taking time off if needed in July to study for CBSE.

Opportunities:
I. Interns will have the opportunity to perform the full range of dentoalveolar procedures, benign pathology, implant placement, bone and soft tissue augmentation, consultations/treatment planning and managing medically complex patients.
II. Covering the outpatient sedation center, completing more complicated procedures under moderate/deep intravenous sedation, and assisting with the sedation itself.
III. Taking dental and facial trauma call at Temple University Hospital in North Philadelphia (Level I Trauma Center). The call is busy, but is split with Plastics, ENT, and a separate 4 Year OMFS program, so it is not as frequent, offering interns more time for studying.
IV. Managing hospital inpatient care and prerounding/rounding.
V. Participation in all didactic activities, including attending weekly lectures, case presentations/case review, grand rounds, and scholarly activity.
VI. Second and First-Assisting on OR cases at the hospital. Given the nature of the program with one resident per year and incomplete coverage at times; there will be opportunities for the interns to first-assist with the attending on larger cases, offering a unique experience at the intern level.

Please contact Dr. Pooja Gangwani at [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions.
Are the positions still open? I am interested in applying but will be out of state.

How does GME differ from funding by the school?

How does GME differ from funding by the school?
GME funding originates from the federal government and may have limitations on the number of resident positions (PGY) they can support. If you participate in a GME-funded internship, the hospital (specifically in a categorical residency program) has to start you at the PGY2 salary level when you match for your categorical spot.

Non-GME programs do not rely on federal government funding. This allows them to hire you as a PGY1 directly into their residency program, potentially making you a more attractive candidate alongside your other accomplishments.
Hope this helps!

OMFS Internship at UMKC School of Dentistry

The UMKC School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri, is seeking to fill one non-categorical internship position for the upcoming year. Non-categorical interns hold the same responsibilities as categorical interns, including:

• Running the OMFS clinic at the UMKC School of Dentistry

• Taking in-house call at Truman Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital

• Covering trauma and dental cases 24/7, 365 days a year at both hospitals (OMFS does not share responsibilities with ENT or Plastics)

• Assisting in the operating room

• Participating in weekly lectures and a monthly journal club

Past Intern Experience:
“I recently completed a non-categorical internship at the dental school. I left feeling comfortable with interpreting CT scans, repairing complex facial and scalp lacerations, performing bedside I&Ds of dental infections and PTAs, managing facial fractures, placing patients in MMF with ivy loops or arch bars, and performing dentoalveolar procedures (including extractions of impacted teeth, alveoloplasty, socket preservation, tori removal, and soft tissue reductions). The culture is incredible, and I made lifelong friends in the short time I was there.”

Past interns have been successful in securing numerous interviews, with plenty of experiences to discuss, and ultimately matching with excellent programs.

If interested, please send your CV and CBSE score (if taken) to Solon Kao at [email protected]. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or green card holders and must qualify for a Missouri Dental License.

Hi, is there a chance to sponsor a visa. I do have an outstanding application

I feel like I’m falling behind in this process. My interest in OMFS developed during my third year, but I hadn’t originally planned to specialize due to health challenges during my D1/D2 years. As a result, I’m not in the top 10% of my class. Have I missed the mark for non-categorical spots, or are there still opportunities available? If anyone knows of any open positions, I would be incredibly grateful for the information.

Since Match Day, I’ve been actively reaching out to programs but haven’t been able to establish connections or find information about openings

MetroHealth: one non-categorical intern spot remaining!

Because of our overwhelming surgical volume, we recently received approval to offer one additional non-categorical internship position! MetroHealth is part of the larger Case Western Reserve University Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery program. This is a one year position, and qualified candidates will receive a salary, health benefits, retirement benefits, and paid holidays.
MetroHealth is a nationally ranked, non-for-profit community hospital system serving NorthEast Ohio. The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery team is based at the main MetroHealth Medical Center (a level 1 trauma center) in Cleveland, Ohio. Interns will have the opportunity to work under Dr. Justin Clemow DMD, MD, FACS, and Dr. Joseph Helman, DMD.
The backbone of the team is the residents, made up of one mid-level resident from the CWRU program serving as chief, plus the MetroHealth non-cats. We run a very busy clinic, thanks to a large MetroHealth Dental group and community referrals. You will also get experience assisting in the OR, rounding on post-surgical patients, and taking call in the Emergency Department. Without categorical interns, non-cats are given a chance to learn and shine, with lots of one-on-one time with the attendings.
