OMFS Internship Opportunities - POST HERE ONLY

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is still an open position at NUMC in Long Island New York for those interested in a 1 year OMFS non cat . Please see above post for details.

Asked this on a different thread but was still curious what programs are still open.

How many programs still have open noncats? Seems that applicants are trending to not wanting to do them. (Only asking mainly because I have a noncat lined up but wanted to know the atmosphere on noncats)

Non-Categorical Internship Position (Non-Categorical PGY-1) available at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The TJUH OMFS program is an accredited 4-year and 6-year OMFS Program in Philadelphia, PA with four categorical positions each year (2 in each track). We are looking for hard-working, self-motivated individuals who are looking to build their CV for residency applications. All prospective applicants must be eligible for an unrestricted Pennsylvania Dental license, a DEA license, and should have their own form of transportation. We have 4 non-categorical positions each year.

Our scope covers almost everything an OMFS can do including head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery, management of benign and malignant pathology, microvascular reconstructive surgery, orthognathic surgery, management of facial trauma, dentoalveolar surgery, implant surgery, and TMJ surgery.

Non-categorical interns are treated the same as our categorical interns with identical responsibilities. Responsibilities include:
  • Coverage of our main hospital in Center City Philadelphia (Level 1 trauma) and our satellite hospital in Northeast Philadelphia (Jefferson Torresdale, Level 2)
  • Coverage of our outpatient clinics located in Center City, Torresdale, Navy Yard and Bryn Mawr (extractions, biopsies, pre-prosthetic surgery, sedations, OR pre/post-ops, hospital follow-ups, outpatient H&N procedures)
  • Involvement in OR cases in Center City, Northeast Philadelphia and occasionally Methodist Hospital (located in Center City). We operate every day of the week.
  • Rounding on inpatients and managing their care at our Center City and Northeast Philadelphia locations
  • Taking primary call (4-7x/month). Home-call (non-trauma and trauma). Trauma is split with ENT every other month. Call is only taken for Center City, not Methodist or our Northeast Philadelphia Hospital location.
  • Involvement in all TJUH OMFS didactic activities

This is a paid position with full benefits through TJUH. Additional information regarding salary or benefits may be found on the TJUH Resident Information page (Resident Salary, Benefits & Other Information).

We have continued to enhance our didactic curriculum which includes an oral pathology course, monthly journal clubs, weekly case presentations and weekly lectures from residents, faculty, and guest lecturers. This position is an excellent opportunity to prepare you if you are reapplying to the OMS match in 2025. You will be working daily and directly under the supervision of multiple oral surgeons and will directly participate in surgical cases.

If you are interested in this position, please contact our Program Coordinator Ms. Joanna Schultz @ [email protected]. You must be attending or have graduated from an accredited US or Canadian dental school (or an advanced placement program). If qualified, we will set up a Zoom interview with our Program Director in the coming days.

Thank you in advance for your interest in our program!

Feel free to DM me with any questions!

OMFS Internship at UMKC: Still looking for interns.

UMKC School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri is looking to fill two non-categorial internship positions. Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities as categorical interns. Duties include:
  • Running the OMFS clinic at the UMKC School of Dentistry
  • Taking in-house call (q4-5) at Truman Medical Center and Children's Mercy Hospital
    • OMFS covers trauma and dental call 365/24/7 at both hospitals; we do not share with ENT or plastics
  • Assisting in the OR
  • Participating in weekly lectures and monthly journal club
Personal Experience: I am currently a non-categorical intern at the dental school. At this point, I'm comfortable interpreting CTs, repairing complex facial/scalp lacerations, doing bedside I&Ds of dental infections and PTAs, managing facial fractures, placing patients into MMF with ivy loops or arch bars, and dentoalveolar procedures (extractions of impacted teeth, alveoloplasties, socket preservations, tori removals, soft tissue reductions, etc.). The culture here is awesome. I've already made some lifelong friends in the short amount of time I've been here. Next year's chiefs and upper levels are fantastic and will always be there when you need 'em. Lastly, I don't know if I'll match on Monday, but I did get 20+ interview invites this cycle, and I had plenty to talk about when asked about my experiences as an intern.

If you're interested, please send your CV and CBSE score (if you've taken the exam) to Solon Kao at [email protected]. Must be a US citizen or a green card holder and qualify for a Missouri Dental License.

The Augusta University Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program is looking for another Non-categorical Intern to join us for the 2024-2025 academic year!

We are a full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program located in Augusta, Georgia and cover the Level I trauma center at Augusta University Medical Center and the Level II pediatric trauma center at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia attached to AUMC.

There is an emphasis on mentorship and preparing Non-categorical Interns for the next match and beyond. We have had historically high match rates amongst our Interns! This year, 3 of our Interns matched. Once Interns have demonstrated solid clinical abilities, they are able to split 3rd molar cases with upper levels and have been placing implants prior to leaving.

We have had a recent change in philosophy and scope and are now only doing the ablative portion of malignant pathology cases only. We are heavy in dentoalveolar surgery and sedations, and additionally get great exposure to trauma and TMJ.

Facilities and responsibilities for Interns/Residents:
  • Dental College of Georgia: This is a busy outpatient clinic serving patients from both the dental school and the Veterans Association. You will be able to perform dentoalveolar procedures and see consults and follow-ups in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including but not limited to extractions/implants, orthognathics, benign/malignant pathology (no microvascular), and temporomandibular joint disorders.
  • AUMC: Interns along with categorical residents are responsible for rounding and managing inpatients throughout the week. Call will be split approximately q5-7 at AUMC with 2 weeks out of each month being trauma call (home call). OMFS covers infection call daily, but there are no dental extractions in the ED and GPR handles splinting of teeth and small vestibular abscesses. The pediatric ED is attached to the adult ED. OMFS has its own dedicated call room and shower requiring access key to enter along with a lounge on the same floor with free food/drink/coffee.
  • ASMP: You will be rotating a few days each month at the Augusta State Medical Prison where you will have a robust experience in extractions of teeth (including plenty of 3rds) under local anesthesia and seeing trauma exams and follow-ups. It is not unusual for an Intern to have up to 3 sets of wisdom teeth extractions on a given day at ASMP. The ASMP allows for us to gain more trauma experience and trauma cases are often evaluated during the day there rather than being overnight consults.
Didactics:
  • Didactics are held every Wednesday afternoon with lectures from attendings, presentations from upper level residents, as well as mock boards and emergency drills
  • Journal clubs are held once a month where we go out as a group to restaurants with sales reps
  • Implant conference takes place on Wednesday afternoons
  • OMFS has multidisciplinary conferences with the orthodontics department and pathology lectures as well
  • Interns can take part in research of their choosing during the year and are encouraged to do so both to strengthen their application and to gain knowledge on research and the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Pay is approximately $50,000 for the year, with plenty of places to live that are reasonably priced and close to the Medical Center.

Documents required:
  • CV
  • CBSE
  • INBDE Scores
  • Dental school transcript
Please contact the Program Director Dr. Newman [email protected] to apply for the position.

Hello,

Rutgers OMFS in Newark, NJ has an opening for a 1-year non categorical internship position starting July 1, 2024.

This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to OMFS at a truly broad-scope program that also has very strong dentoalveolar and implant training.

Hospital OMFS Non-categorical position

University Health in Kansas City, Missouri (associated with UMKC Dental School) is looking to fill a non-categorial internship position. This will be a separate non-categorical internship position from the dental school. Non-categorical interns have the same responsibilities and function as categorical interns. Duties will include:
  • Work in the hospital oral surgery clinic
  • In-house call (5-7/month on average) at University Health (formerly Truman Medical Center) and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Handle scheduling for OR
  • Manage inpatients at University Health (formerly Truman Medical Center) and Children's Mercy Hospital
  • Weekly didactics and monthly journal club
The program has a lot of dentoalveolar and trauma. ENT and plastics don’t cover facial trauma calls here. In addition, the residents and attendings are helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the resident lounge offers free and unlimited coffee, soda, and snacks. 🙂

Please send your CV, LOR, personal statement, dental school transcript, PASS application (if applicable) and CBSE score if you already took it to [email protected]. Feel free to DM me for any questions.

Edit: Would have to be permanent resident or US citizen to apply, and be able to obtain a Missouri dental license

How late do some programs accept non-cat interns? I have personal obligations limiting me to a later start date.

UMKC would probably let you do it. its been done before. Also, you can watch the chiefs win another superbowl, you'll be right on time.

As a D2 speaking from a East Coast school, are non-cat years competitive or that hard to get into if you're really focused on getting in, even if a lower GPA for example but a decent CBSE?

Mount Sinai / Jacobi Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship Opportunity

July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026

The Mount Sinai Hospital / Jacobi Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program annually offers several OMFS internship positions. These one-year positions are designed for the candidates that are genuinely interested in pursuing an OMFS residency and would like to experience a full scope OMFS residency.

Duties will include: clinic coverage, on call coverage, ER, OR and inpatient management of OMFS patients. Interns will also attend all didactic lectures and conferences. Our interns will work side by side with our OMFS residents and attending surgeons. Our OMFS residency is a 6-year program with 4 resident positions per year.

There are three distinct intern tracks:

Jacobi Medical Center / North Central Bronx / Mount Sinai West

Jacobi Medical Center and North Central Bronx Hospital (NCB) where the intern will spend the majority of his/her time, encompasses a busy Level 1 Trauma Center in the eastern Bronx. Additionally, our interns will spend approximately 2 months in Manhattan at the Mount Sinai West Hospital. At Jacobi and NCB we have 2 busy outpatient clinics. Our department (GPR, pediatric dentistry, and OMFS) manages over 35,000 out-patient visits per year.

The Mount Sinai Hospital / Elmhurst Hospital Center

The Mount Sinai Hospital is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Elmhurst Hospital Center is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. The interns will divide their time between these two sites. Both sites provide substantial in-patient and out-patient oral and maxillofacial surgery experiences.

James J. Peters Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Bronx VA)

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is a tertiary care 378 bed in and outpatient facility located in the west Bronx that serves the health care needs of veterans in the New York Metropolitan area. The Bronx VA treats approximately 26,000 veterans annually and has an on-site general practice residency in dentistry that is sponsored by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine’s Department of Dentistry.

Our interns are an integral part of the OMFS team. Many of our past interns were successful in matching with programs immediately following completion of the internship. Successful candidates will be bright, self-motivated and eager to become part of a dynamic OMFS team. Additionally, they must have completed at least a PGY-1 GPR or AEGD before the start of the program. The OMFS internships are fully funded positions. Salaries start at the PGY-2 level.

Interested parties should email their CV to our internship director ([email protected]), Dr. Kerry McEntee.

I know programs are currently busy with interviews but when is a good time to start reaching out to programs for the 2025-26 non-categorical spots? Is now too early?
I am a 4th yr dental student (not applying this cycle) and planning on doing a non-cat next year.

I know this time of year, everyone is trying to figure out exactly how they want to fill out their rank list, but I just want to take the time to post a little about my experiences at my OMFS internship so that those of you not fortunate enough to MATCH will be aware of the opportunities available to you. I encourage others in similar positions at GPRs and other internships to do the same.

I am currently an intern at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas. Our interns function wholly at JPS hospital, although our program is under the umbrella of the Parkland Residency program with all conference, meeting, and lecture opportunities available to us. We have 3 full time faculty at the moment, each with their own niche. Next year, an additional faculty member will be added.

Our faculty include:
Dr. John Stella: Chairman of the OMFS department at JPS and is an excellent teacher in bread and butter OMFS. Orthognathic treatment planning, organization, and surgical skills along with how to run a private practice are the main things that Dr. Stella will teach you along with overall general patient management.

Dr. Michael Warner works mostly with the residents in the areas of TMJ and facial pain, cosmetics, and salivary gland pathology. Dr. Warner is very knowledgeable in these areas and is a great resource to the interns and residents.

Dr. Herman Kao is a recent graduate of the Parkland residency program Dr. Kao is very much familiar with the challenges of residency and does all he can to show the residents the easy and correct way to approach self-learning and residency as a whole. He also is the main clinic faculty member and covers Facial Lesion clinic and most of our Trauma, cleft, and reconstructive surgery.

Next year JPS will be adding another full time faculty member who will have just completed a 2-year Oncology fellowship. Many of you may know who this person is and know what he brings to the table. Since I have not dealt with this person directly, I will not claim to know what all he has to offer, but I will say that I have heard nothing but good things about this persons surgical skill and desire to teach.

All of our faculty are excellent resources and are very much involved with and concerned about the interns. Each is very much approachable and I would have no problem walking into any of their offices and starting a conversation about just about anything.

Now about the internship itself. The best way I can describe our responsibilities and educational experiences is to walk you through a typical week at JPS.

Monday: All-day Sedation clinic. 3rd molars, Full mouth extractions, difficult pre-prosthetic surgery, etc. We also see consults, follow-ups, and hospital patient follow-ups as needed. But mostly this day is dedicated to our sedation patients. At lunch, we have Orthognathic conference with Dr. Stella where we each present orthognathic surgical workups that we take from impressions through preliminary model surgery and treatment plans. We present these cases formally and discuss treatment options, benefits, risks, etc. This experience is invaluable as far as learning orthognathic surgery from someone who has done over 1,000 cases and published a book on the subject.

Tuesday: Operating Room. JPS has enough trauma, pathology, elective surgery, etc. to fill a full designated OR day each Tuesday. We also operative on Weekends and other days as needed.

Wednesdays: Usually the 5th and 6th year residents are in an orthognathic case with Dr. Stella and the interns cover general clinic (everything but sedations). Wednesday afternoons are Dr. Warners facial Pain/TMJ clinic where we diagnose and treat everything from toothaches to Myofacial pain to true TMJ disorders and neuropathies.

Thursdays: Mornings are Facial Lesion Clinic where we treat everything from moles and lipomas to Squamos cell and basal cell carcinomas. At lunch, Dr. Kao usually has a journal club where we discuss journal articles about various topics.

Fridays are a half-day, usually until about 1pm and is
another full Sedation clinic.

Call: JPS is a level 1 trauma center and you will see the full gamut of craniofacial trauma.

Call is q3 currently for the interns, but next year, JPS will be taking 4 interns so call will probably be q4. Trauma/infections are split every other week with ENT. When on call, but not during a trauma week, your responsibilities are only to manage the OMFS in-house patients and to answer specific referrals to our service. Our operating rooms and Emergency department are all brand new and all imaging is digital. I have been to many programs across the country and can honestly say that I have not seen operating rooms nicer than ours.

Benefits: You receive a $1200 moving stipend, a $300 one time allowance to purchase a PDA or Smartphone (we all bought iphones), $50 a month built into your check for your smartphone/PDA, and $1000 education supply allowance with which I bought books. We have a monthly food allowance of about $200 with which no one this year has ever approached. Our resident room is brand new with computers, a nice couch, and laptop.

Fort Worth has a pretty cheap/reasonable cost of living and traffic is not too bad. Dallas is 35 minutes away and between Dallas and Fort Worth, there is pretty much everything you might want in an area to live.

As a dental student, at least for me, no matter how much shadowing and externship experience you have (I did 6), there is still a tendency to feel like an outsider asking for inclusion when interviewing due to your relative inexperience. I cant say that this intern year guarantees myself or my co-interns to MATCH, but I can say that I felt much more confident in my interviews mostly because of the scope of practice I have been exposed to.

As thorough as I have tried to be in my description, I know there will be things I left out and things you will have questions about. Feel free to send me a personal message and I will do my best to answer any and all questions. I also know that many others involved in this program are on SDN and may want to chime in with their opinions and information and I encourage them to do so.

In closing, I just want to add that I feel like this internship has been fantastic to this point mostly because of all I get to do and see. When looking for internships and residencies, I feel that broad scope is very beneficial and I dont think you will find many internships that rival the scope at JPS. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

If interested in this Internship, Contact Dr. Stella's Residency Coordinator, Holly Portwood at 817-920-6936.

I was reviewing your website. Is there a OMFS residency program at this establishment?

OMFS Internship at UMKC School of Dentistry

The UMKC School of Dentistry in Kansas City, Missouri, is seeking to fill two non-categorical internship positions for the upcoming year. Non-categorical interns hold the same responsibilities as categorical interns, including:

• Running the OMFS clinic at the UMKC School of Dentistry

• Taking in-house call at Truman Medical Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital

• Covering trauma and dental cases 24/7, 365 days a year at both hospitals (OMFS does not share responsibilities with ENT or Plastics)

• Assisting in the operating room

• Participating in weekly lectures and a monthly journal club

Past Intern Experience:
“I recently completed a non-categorical internship at the dental school. I left feeling comfortable with interpreting CT scans, repairing complex facial and scalp lacerations, performing bedside I&Ds of dental infections and PTAs, managing facial fractures, placing patients in MMF with ivy loops or arch bars, and performing dentoalveolar procedures (including extractions of impacted teeth, alveoloplasty, socket preservation, tori removal, and soft tissue reductions). The culture is incredible, and I made lifelong friends in the short time I was there.”

If interested, please send your CV and CBSE score (if taken) to Solon Kao at [email protected]. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or green card holders and must qualify for a Missouri Dental License.

I know programs are currently busy with interviews but when is a good time to start reaching out to programs for the 2025-26 non-categorical spots? Is now too early?
I am a 4th yr dental student (not applying this cycle) and planning on doing a non-cat next year.
now is not too early! I would apply to any you are interested in now.

The OMFS Program at Ascension Macomb-Oakland in Detroit, MI is currently accepting applications for non-categorical spots for the upcoming year.

The PGY1 residents are away at medical school for most of the year so the non-cats function essentially as the PGY1s. Many of the current residents in the program also completed a non-categorical year at the program.

Please message me if you have any questions about the program or if you would like for me to point you in the right direction to apply for the position.

We matched all 5 this year, and last year. I am currently a non-cat here and well all matched! I know every one from last year and they all matched as well. Happy to share proof if you want 🙂
Hi, DOes Ms. Moore respond?

I was a former non cat and wanted to provide some insight into this program. First and foremost, the mentorship, experience, and sheer confidence that I gained, was invaluable towards my development as a provider. The attendings are extremely knowledgable, hands on and are truly there for the residents, the staff is supportive, and the bond that you form with your co-residents is a very special one.

For those that want to pursue OMFS or are on the fence or even just want more reps to extract teeth, this is definitely the program for you. You will get experience in all facets of OMFS, from exodontia, to implants, all on cases, orthognathic surgery, trauma, pathology, managing inpatients, oral cancer reconstructions, etc. The day to day varies on what site you are at. I spent the majority of the year at Jacobi hospital where interns are crucial to running the OMFS clinic. You are in charge of getting through the walks in for the day, helping out with admin tasks, and seeing the scheduled patients in the afternoon which could include consults, extractions, implants, etc. If there was an OR case, one of us would be assisting. Whomever is on call is also answering pages as they come throughout the day. I would say there was a good balance between inpatient and outpatient duties overall. Call also varied depending on what site you are covering. It averaged out to q3/q4 throughout the year.

The year was by no means easy, however, looking back on the experience, it’s incredible how much Ive learned in such a short period of time. I personally did not pursue OMFS, however, I was able to bring over a lot of what I learned into private practice. Some of my co interns matched and are now in great programs. At the end of the day, you get what you put in. Hope this helps.

Good luck to everyone and make the year count!

Hello!

Wanted to give an update regarding our program at UTMB in Galveston, TX. We are inviting applications for our next non categorical internship position.

We are a small department, with 3 full time faculty, two are fellowship trained in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction. One categorical resident matches every year and we take 1-2 non categorical interns. Currently in our program, 2 of the 4 categorical residents were non cat interns at UTMB prior to matching.

The scope practiced at UTMB is broad. Our program is trauma and pathology heavy with 1-2 free flaps a week. The sleep surgery practice is thriving, typically, we place several hypoglossal nerve simulators every week. The TMJ and arthroscopic practice is similarly growing with total joints being placed most every month and scopes roughly every other week.

As an intern you can expect to operate because our program is so small. Our intern his first month was operating 1 on 1 with faculty. Experiences included placing hypoglossal nerve stimulators, harvesting and closing free flaps, draining odontogenic infections, dentoalveolar surgery, orthognathics, flexible laryngoscopies, facial fractures, and biopsies.

Living in Galveston is fun and affordable. The island is a denstination for vacationers from Houston and around the country in the summer months. The winter or "off season" months are filled with weekend festivals like Oktoberfest, Dickens on the Strand, and Shrimp Fest, Mardi Gras, and Lone Star Biker Rally. UTMB is a level 1 trauma center that typically is a transfer destination for hospitals in SE Texas and the south east suburbs of Houston. We are about 40 minutes from downtown Houston if you want the big city night life.

As a non categorical intern you considered are a PGY 1 with the pay and employment benefits commisurate with a categorical resident. This include healthcare, dental, vision, and retirement options.

Please Contact Rotesha Buckley for an application!
