PCOM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just received one as well, is it normal for them to assign an interview date for you? Can this be changed? I have an exam on this date!!!!!!!

I don't know for sure, but usually schools are willing to work with you. They can't just give you one date or nothing. Did you get 11/20?

yea thats what I figured. Right now I'm scheduled the day before yours, so 11/19, I think its a wednesday.

Hey guys,
I was wondering what the odds were of getting an interview at both PCOMs. I just got my interview invite from PA-PCOM 🙂, but I also really love GA-PCOM!! I actually just visited the school today. I'm a Florida resident so I thought it was kinda weird I heard from PA first and not GA. I called the admissions office today and I was told it was possible to get invites to both. Does anyone know of anyone who has gotten both interview invites and how long it was between each invite? Thanks!!

Of course there is a possibility, you have to think of them as two separate schools, so you have equal chance with both. In fact, if one offers you an interview chances are you will get one at the other as well. I am closer to LECOM erie, yet i got an interview invite from bradenton first!

Most of the schools I applied to had a menu of dates to choose from, but of the schools who prearranged a date for you, not all of them seemed keen on changing the date. One school when I asked to changed the date weren't particularly friendly about it, and another school when I asked whether it was possible to change the date said, "I wouldn't recommend it.", gave me a lecture about how they were doing me a favor by giving me an early interview date, and telling me I would have to wait months for a reschedule date. -- I bit the bullet, thanked them for the early interview, and confirmed the interview date.

Thanks phillybum! Good stuff. I'm actually scheduled at PCOM the day you are, November 19th? Were you able to reschedule? I'm actually from Bradenton! When's your LECOM interview? Mine is October 17th.

I'm getting so anxious to receive this secondary! PCOM-PA is my top choice. I've been verified for a couple of weeks now. How much longer should I expect to have to wait? I'm going to finish up the secondary essay this weekend so it's ready to go.

Thanks

You should be getting it soon. PCOM sends the secondary by mail to your permanent address so make sure you check that mail or have someone that can.

In the PCOM essay (and essays in general) do you guys discuss why OMM fits well with your mentality, or is that too specific? I discussed why the general D.O. mentality is a perfect fit for me, but I didn't specifically talk about OMM. What do you guys think? Thanks.

I wonder why they do that, when GA-PCOM sends it to the current mailing address. 😕

But that would explain why I was confused by the GA-PCOM secondary I got, because nowhere in the letter did it specifically say "georgia campus" and it made it sound like you were supposed to do the PCOM secondary and then the GA-PCOM one if you had applied there as well.

Hope they don't mind that I just went ahead and did both? Oopsie.

Oh, and I'm slightly dismayed to hear that they're scheduling invites for the end of Nov now! So even if I get an invite in a timely manner (fingers crossed, right?) I won't get to interview until Dec or Jan at the earliest. Bummer. I so want this process to be over with now!

OMM was the tightest connection to osteopathic medicine for me so I discussed it primarily and then threw in some other things. If you wanna know what I wrote I'll pm you. Let me know.

Hey Jen, I haven't gotten a reply back from PCOM on the possibility of rescheduling because the invite was late on friday so theres no way they have read my email request, hopefully they do! Thats awesome that you're from Bradenton, my LECOM interview is October 1st!

Ok thanks! I'm an old married lady, so my current address is my permanent address 🙂 lol

HI everyone. congrats on getting interviews😉
I have one question. how strict is PCOM on their letter requirements? I do not have a comm letter, and I graduated almost 3 yrs ago, and I feel that getting a letter from the dean of my school is pointless because he doesnt know me as a person. I have great science letters (from my research/class advisor) as well as letters from my employer (research),and a DO letter. Should I be ok with my letters, or should i try to get one from the dean?

I actually didn't do a dean's letter or an advisor's letter or anything. I just had letters from faculty and a DO and a volunteer one. Maybe they just overlooked it, haha. I didn't even know about the Dean's thing actually until last night when I was re-reading the CIB. Oops, oh well!

If I sent in my secondary on Sept. 15th, when should I expect to hear from the school in regards to receipt and possibly an offer of interview? Do they even let me know they received the secondary?

I don't remember them writing me a letter but I do remember getting the invite a few weeks after mailing think I had everything out late september and got the invite mid october for mid november

is there anywhere online to check your status or are we best of calling the admissions office?

I forgot to mention that my committee letter won't be sent out for another week or two. And since the committee will send out their letter as well as the other LORs, I was wondering will PCOM evaluate me before they receive my LORs?

good luck bacchus! i just got an invite for 11/20. let us know how it goes!

hey, does anyone have an interview in philly on Monday October 6th? That is when mine was scheduled for..

also, I was wondering if anyone thought it was too late to submit secondary applications for other DO schools? I've been procrastinating with the last 3 secondaries..

not too late, imo.

some people will be turning down acceptances as time goes by.

good luck

hey, i noticed this question went unanswered. Can anyone who got an interview tell me approx how long was the wait between being complete and hearing about your interview? I was "complete" w/o notice by 9/5 and wanted an idea of how long to expect to wait. Like many other pcom is my top choice. Thanks and good luck to all!

I would imagine it would also depend alot on your grades / mcat...

someone with a 35MCAT and 3.5gpa will probably get an interview invite as soon as possible after verification.

Someone with a 25MCAT and 2.5gpa may not...

what about a 25MCAT and 3.7gpa? 😉

Hey can anyone refer me to any link(s) that show what the campus looks like? I applied to this school knowing absolutely nothing about it, and does anyone know how the board scores are?

Thanks.

*edit* I have narrowed down my application to only 3 schools -- considering adding this one!!

Campus is located at the dividing line between Phila and Montgomery Counties. Address is 4170 City Avenue, Philadelphia. Look it up on Google Earth. There are two primary buildings and then a recreation center attached (I believe :\). You spend the majority of first and second year in Evans hall.

Yeah i guess stats do have an effect. I was just concerned because I've received interview invites from all but 3 of the 12 schools I completed secondaries on PCOM was one of them. Stats are 3.3gpa and a 35Q. I was complete about 3 weeks ago. Hopefully I'm nervous for no reason but PCOM is by far where I want to go and to not hear anything yet is unnerving.

I was just trying to get an idea of how long between being complete and the invite, if any came for the avg applicant. Thanks for the input!

Bacchus, when did the interview+tour end for the day? The admission office told me it ends around 2pm and i can catch a flight back by 4pm. Is that about right for your day?

Also, how do you like the school after your visit? Is the interview pretty chill? How's the people interviewing you?

Just make sure to keep in contact with them. If you get an acceptance call them and let them know you have something on the table but really want PCOM. Find ways to call and let them know you are interested. (Do not go overboard, but I think you get what I mean)

I wrote feedback in the interview feedback (scroll all the way to the top, click the medical tab, and then interview feedback under resources). I was done by 11:30. We had a 5-student group and our interviews lasted approximately 20-25 minutes. I had no idea how fast time flew. Extremely laid back interview. It was the first set of interviews they did 🙂D) so it wasn't the norm representation. Usually its morning and afternoon interviews with multiple interviews going on at once. It is a panel interview which is not nearly as burdensome as I thought it was going to be. You're usually interviewed by an admissions representative, faculty member, and practicing physician (DO). I had the pleasure of interviewing with a DO psychiatrist and DO clinic rotation coordinator, plus the direct of Admissions. Also, when you eat breakfast you'll have an ambassador. Our's was Dr. Nicholas, the OMM faculty member. I didn't go on the tour as I had been to PCOM several times before. But the tour, according to the email, lasts approximately 45 minutes and it was supposed to start at noon.

For those wanting/needing/waiting for a secondary... I should let you know that when I was sitting in the fishbowl yesterday there was a huge stack of envelopes to be mailed, atleast probably 75-100.

Bacchus, thanks for the detailed input. I really appreciate it. I checked out your interview feedback. I was wondering about the interview style. You put "in a group." Does that mean 3 interviewer interviewing u at once, or 3 interviewers interviewing you one at a time, or 3 interviewers interviewing you and a group of other students at once? Thanks homie..

AACOMAS submitted 6/13
AACOMAS verified 7/16
Secondary received 7/30
Secondary sent 7/31
LORs sent 8/14
Complete ???
Interview Invite 9/12
Interview scheduled for 10/6
Interview rescheduled for 10/13

Hope that helps.

Found this on an old SDN post.

PCOM 2002 Admission Stats:

Total:
3154 applied
664 interviewed (21% interviewed)
410 accepted (61.7% of interviewees accepted)
256 enrolled

Instate:
476 applied
317 interviewed (66.6% interviewed)
274 accepted (86.4% of interviewees accepted)
171 enrolled

OOS:
2678 applied
347 interviewed (13.0% interviewed)
136 accepted (39.2% of interviewees accepted)
85 enrolled

These stats are pretty old so I imagine it's probably more competitive now, especially with DO's being more well known now. But the stats post interview invite are probably in the same ballpark.

I did a post-bacc program, not at my undergrad institution and have my committee letter from there.

For those in the same sort of situation, what did you ask for from the dean of your undergrad? I know it was discussed previously, but I'm still a little unclear what I should ask for.

Should I just ask for a short paragraph saying that I went to the school and graduated with my B.S. in 2006? It doesn't need to be any type of recommendation? I'm good friends with the dean's assistant, so I hope it will speed up the process if I'm clear on what I need to have sent.

Do they grant interviews before they recieve this?
Thanks!

There aren't many options on the feedback. 3 individuals interviewing only me, at once.

The interview you describe should be marked as "One-On-One" with 3 interviewers. The "In a Group" style is for Touro-CA, where they interview multiple students in the same room, simultaneously.

It really could be clearer. I'm not sure the "Stress Level" question is completely unambiguous, either.

During orientation, the administration told us that they received 5,500 applications for 271 seats. Numbers have increased from years past, and will continue to. For those of you interested in attending PCOM for medical school, I would suggest you get your applications in as soon as possible.

My PCOM-Philly interview is tomorrow 9/29.... i'm excited and nervous. Wish me luck, and good luck to everyone else with their interviews.

Those kinds of numbers are always scary. Even if they actually accept double the amount of people they have seats for, still less than 10% :scared::scared:
