PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Two things. 1) PCOM sent me a christmas card which i thought was a very nice touch. 2) They finally sent me an email confirming they rec'd my deposit and will be sending my 'binder' soon.

It's getting more and more official

Finally got that email today too (twice actually, lol). They've had my money for a couple of weeks now, so it's nice to finally get an official 'your stuff is in' note.
No card though. 🙁 Aww.

Don't feel bad. No xmas card here either... haha.

Got in today!!!!!

Best Christmas present ever

Good luck to everyone here. If I can do it, you can do it!

So just a general query,
This is the second time I've heard of someone who was interviewed at PCOM and got an acceptance within 9-10 days. I interviewed there on 12/13 and have not heard from them.

I know they said it could take anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks to get a response, but I'm wondering if the people they accept get a response fast and the rest of us just get a response when they get around to it? Is this a stretch of my imagination? Is it just as common to get an acceptance letter in the third or fourth week as it is in the first or second week?

Well I live about 20 mins away in new jersey so it came fast for me. That may be the big difference because the letter was dated the 22nd and from what I've heard, they meet every two weeks on a wednesday (the 22nd). You should probably find out some time this week would be my guess

NVM the guy above me posted the same info.

If you interview the day after they meet you are waiting until the next meeting. I think when I interviewed it was once a month. Evidently theyve stepped up their mtg schedule..or perhaps my memory fails me.

I've been complete for 2 months and haven't heard anything...although I don't really expect to
My application was complete in late October as well and I have not gotten an interview either. Does anyone know if out of state status delays an interview?

When did you complete your application?

When did you complete your application?

I applied initially in June, completed the application by late July, got the interview invite in late October, interviewed on December 13th.

I have not heard from them yet about accept/denial. I live in Swarthmore, PA about 20-30 minutes away from campus.

I have really been sweating the mailbox this week because I'm leaving tomorrow to get started at AUC in St. Maarten. I'm really hoping that if I am going to be accepted at PCOM I will be notified by this Friday the 31st. Sunday the 2nd is when I register for classes at AUC. If I'm accepted after Sunday I will lose a chunk of loan money. I'll do it if it means I can attend PCOM, but I'd prefer not to start medical school with debt. God knows I'll be ending it with enough debt. 🙂 Even if I get in tomorrow I'll still be losing $2-3,000.

why wouldnt you wait to start in the fall so you could wait to hear from DO schools?

Yea, I was thinking the exact same thing.

Obviously there is nothing wrong in applying to the carib just in case things don't work out with DO schools, but by applying to Carib for this winter, you are forced into a position of commiting to the Carib before you have heard from all of your DO schools.

The committee probably hasn't met, just met, or the mail is taking a while. Going to AUC instead of waiting is a huge mistake.

I greatly appreciate you all being honest and responsive. I have thought before about deferring my spot at AUC until May, but the realitity is I have no reason to think that even a DO school will look kindly on my stats. cGPA 2.4 MCAT 24Q sGPA 3.6. The reality is PCOM is the only US school out of 52 I have applied to that has responded to me with anything other than an out and out rejection.

I know I am taking a risk, but PCOM doesn't care if I have a semester of classes under my belt if I start there in August.

I appreciate your insights, but I'll take my chances.

Hope you're all having a great holiday season. 🙂

Just realized I skipped over my interview invite from last Thursday... oops.

I got an interview invite for 2/16. Anyone else attending on this date? I live across the street from PCOM so it's a huge relief to get the invite to my top school.

This question is going out towards current PCOM students and those specifically who either live at Beekman or know peoples' situations who do. My girlfriend and I are looking for apartments and we checked out a few apartments near PCOM. We really liked Beekman and we're just trying to figure out how much those who live at Beekman took out in Grad Plus Loans. Between the two of us, we figured our expenses will likely be 2400/months. She is a nursing student so she can offer 12500/yr plus her work money which is ~800/month. So this means that I would roughly have to take out ~18000/yr in Grad Plus Loans. Does this number sound ridiculous? What are you guys taking out?

Thanks and sorry for the long question.

Congrats on the interview!
Good luck to you!

I still haven't heard back from them but hopefully I will soon. 🙂

I was wondering if anyone knows how the match program works. If my husband is going to allopathic school would we be able to participate in the couple match despite going to two diff kinds of schools? I know they are different applications.. I was just wondering how we would handle this.

he wouldn't be able to participate in the DO match, so if you wanted to do the couples match you could only apply to MD residencies.

Thanks.. That is what I figured (a girl can dream hah). I'm sure the USMLE is manageable

interview invite finally for...March 9th?!? I feel like most spots will be taken by then. is PCOM good about moving people up if an earlier date opens up? i was complete sept 15th AND I'm in-state. why did this take so long?

I feel like PCOM-PA moves slower than most schools. When I applied 2 years ago, I was complete in late fall and didn't hear anything until the end of April.

In this application cycle, I applied to PCOM-GA and PCOM-PA at the same time. PCOM-GA moved very fast with my app and I've still heard nothing from the PA campus.

I hope everything works out for you!

Has anyone heard anything from PCOM lately? I sent an update with grades but still have heard nothing from them. I almost forgot I applied here because they've been so quiet! Good luck to those with interviews!

for anybody that interviewed on Dec. 20th, have you heard anything yet????

the waiting is killllllllllling me!

well if it kills you, thats one less competitor for me. 😉

Anyone who had an interview, do you remember how much it cost to stay at the Crowne Plaza when telling them you were with pcom?

Got an interview invite today 🙂 BUT, it's for March 3. Are there going to be any seats left by that point, or will it just be interviewing for a waitlist spot?

Honestly, I think you're better-off to stay at the Hilton. If you walk out the door, you're literally on PCOM's campus and it's a 60 second walk to Evans Hall, where you'll be interviewing. Tell them you're there to interview at PCOM. I believe the rate was $89 with the discount, which is insane. Oh, and get the steak sandwich at the hotel bar--it's awesome.

Ah darn that's not so bad. I used the priceline negotiator and got the Crowne for $75 ($93 after taxes) and figured it was a decent deal. That steak sandwich does sound good though.

Congrats!! I have an interview on the same date. Do you know if they are group or individual?

Accepted! letter was mailed 12/23, only got back to school today so I just checked my mail.

Interviewed 12/13

Hey all,

I recently interviewed at PCOM and really liked the school. I think it has more to offer educationally, socially, and culturally than other DO school I have visited.

That being said I have not been able to find a recent PCOM-PA match list (ie 2010 or 2009). Has anyone been able to locate this? I read another post that claims PCOM's match lists to be mythical published, but I am skeptic. Has anyone seen it and have a link to share?

Thank you!

PCOM is by far my first choice and I am anxiously waiting for an invite for an interview!! I applied September 30th, should I have heard already? Or should I be hearing soon? Has anyone who applied on or after this date heard already?

Interview in 5 days. Anyone else? Starting to get a tad nervous. Its my first choice school.

SO excited to start here! It was my first choice. Congrats to everyone that got in, and good luck to everyone that still has to interview!!

Has anyone started to look at apartments, or make living arrangements?

Do any out-of-state current PCOM students have any words of encouragement about getting in later in the game? I was complete in late September--my GPA is ~3.67 and composite 29 MCAT from Maryland. It's hard to tell from previous years if there are any hope/spots for people still waitng for an interview invite in mid-January...

3.8/31 OOS. Complete 10/04. Accepted or interviewed everywhere else. Still no word from PCOM. what's the deal?

I'm in the same boat. My online thing says that everything was complete as of 10/11 and I haven't heard anything... I'm nervous as all hell over it

I was complete 10/15 and I got an interview. 32 mcat (ish) / 3.2 (ish). Looks like the difference is I'm a PA resident.

Hey MDreaming, I am from Maryland too. I have a WAY low MCAT score, and a 3.7 GPA. I received an invite 10/25 for 12/9 and was accepted 12/23. Just going off stats you still have a good chance. Do you know any current students or any alumni that could call the admissions office and put a word in for you? I know that they were accepting letters from current students so I think they take that into reasonable consideration.

Good Luck!!
