The differences in wording may reflect position on the Tier 1 waitlist... So I guess the idea of having two tiers is pretty weird, since there apparently are 3.
Even though everyone on tier 1 is supposedly unranked. weird.
(I think they're just bad liars)
I thought you said you were calling it a night? *cough*liar*cough* 😉
I know, I'm terrible, right?
(truth be told, I am currently hanging out at my lab...and I've missed the last bus home)
Don't worry, I'm a force to be reckoned with.O_O
be careful!!!
So this is what my waitlist letter in the mail said:
"Your application was very highly regarded by the Committee, and therefore, you have been placed on the first tier waitlist - among those at the very top of the list. Your placement on the list means that you will be one of the first students considered for admission from the waitlist. "
Anybody get anything different? I would say that if the letters are all the same for all of us tier 1's that weren't invited to preview, then the wording discrepancy on the website probably doesn't mean anything.
wtf thats not what mine says. clearly they are ranking their tier 1 waitlist, why are saying anything other than that.
I wish they would just be honest with their admissions policies. Seems kind of ridiculous that they'd have to lie about having a ranked waitlist. I mean others that have a ranked waitlist (hopkins comes to mind) just say they can't tell you what spot you are in.
Every waitlist is inherently ranked, whether they say so or not. They will always go back and select the people that they see as the best fit for their class.

question here... my status page includes:
Waitlist Tier1
The Committee on Admissions has a continuing interest in your application and we hope you remain interested in Penn.
PennMed in the News
is this regular tier1 or the penn preview one?
Update...not all MSTP applicants waitlisted were invited for Penn Preview, so I guess even within MSTP there are tiers.
This tier thing is too damn confusing.
I'm on the tier awesome waitlist
sick, sick sickkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
I just finished my LOI and put it in the mail. I thought that mailing it today would help me stop thinking about the waitlist.....oh how wrong I was.
All this LOI talk has me in the mood to write my hopkins loi. I may start jotting down some ideas.
Heheh, sometimes Goldtop it feels like we are the only 4 or 5 people who were waitlisted from the Penn hopefuls thread, and everyone else got in 😛
Poll shows otherwise, but this thread's pretty quiet in comparison to that monstrous 16 pg thread.
That's definitely not the case. I personally can't bring myself to look at this thread that often. It makes it all the more real.
I should really be dealing with this better by now....
Aw, I'm sorry 🙁 I guess I was more or less assuming I'd be waitlisted, so this wasn't a big surprise. More like "yup, here we go...".
yeah, I'm starting to believe that interviews don't mean as much as everyone thinks they do. I bet most of the people they interview do really well, so in the end, the adcom chooses based on primary/secondary apps.
this is what my letter says:
"The Committee on Admissions has completed its review of your application for admission. We enjoyed meeting youd uring our interview program and found you to be a highly qualified applicant.
The limitation on the number of places available in the class does not allow us to offer you an acceptance at this time. However, because the Committee thought highly of your qualifications we are placing your name on a waitlist for admission. Decisions on acceptances from the waitlist may be made any time, but generally take place no earlier than April 15 and no later than August 11. While there is no individual rank on the waitlist, the Committee has decided the waitlist into two tiers.
You are in the first tier waitlist, along with other very competitive applicants..."
does anyone have the same message? different from mine or Texuality's?
Yup, got this too.
I'm still painfully curious as to whether any MD only applicants were invited to Penn Preview. Anybody know?
I wasn't. And my roommate wasn't (she's also on tier 1). So, no, haven't heard of any that were.
looks like no tier 1 with preview or tier 2 this year.
SDN's also probably pretty skewed towards Tier 1 individuals as well.
True, but simply getting an interview at PENN is impressive...it's not like tier 2 = less overachievery per se.
Haha true..
Although I definitely don't consider myself an overachiever by SDN standards. I spent most of my undergrad with my friends, my bf (now my fiance, so I guess that was a good time investment), and at various dancing venues. Heh. My senior year, I only had class 3 days in the week 😉 There was lots of taekwondo and hanging out with friends and videogames.
If I had to do it all over again, I don't think I'd change a thing (except maybe keep a closer eye on my committee letter). 🙂 If the cost of an outright acceptance into Penn meant not having all the fun I did, or being crazy busy all the time, then I'm happy the way things fell out. College was a fun, relaxing, laid back experience, and I wouldn't have it any other way!
