Philadelphia COM - Georgia (GA-PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Well I don't know exactly when I was complete. But I sent my secondary on 9/20. So maybe 2 weeks later? I emailed them to ask about my status. I think I got lucky to get an 11/4 interview because my original interview was mid December. I think , at this point, most interview invites will be late December or January. There are tons of apps. I could be wrong abut the date but everything seems pretty pushed back at this point.

When I called earlier this week, they initially wanted to give me a date in early December as well. Weird. I guess a couple spots opened up for next Monday.

Were they alright with you emailing about status? It says no status updates will be given...

When will you be there? Excited here as well!

I'm stuck in gridlock about an hour south of ATL. Joy. See you peeps at 11am.

See y'all tomorrow @ 11!

Who are the other SDN peeps in the 11 group? I can't figure out who you all are.

I was here lol. I just got done. Great school, very nice people, nice interviewees, and really impressive curriculum. Good luck to you all. Btw, did they say decisions would go out this Wednesday or next Wednesday?

I believe the committee will meet this Wednesday and decisions will be mail out Friday or Saturday via snail or email upon request.

I thought it was great. It was nice meeting everyone today, even though I had no idea who was whom from here.

I was the really tall dude.

I know who you are haha. I know it was only the 3rd interview day, but if they interview 40 people a day, they've already interviewed 120 people. That's quite a lot!

Were you the guy with the name really similar to mine? I'm assuming those are your initials in your username. I noticed there was some name confusion that occurred a few times during the day.

I don't think so. I think we were split into different groups also.

So what do y'all think the chances are of getting a decision letter in my email today?

I wouldn't place any bets on it.
I would give it AT LEAST a week. Mine came a little more than 2 weeks after my interview. Snail mail is torture.
For mail, yes, but they told us 11-4 people that they would scan and email upon request on Wednesday(today) so I'm not sure. It is torture lol

Upon request? I feel like that's almost more nerve wracking than just getting a response!

So what do y'all think the chances are of getting a decision letter in my email today?

I think Tristin said that they are meeting today, the letters would be mailed tomorrow, and if you live near PCOM then you'd likely receive it on Friday. I didn't hear him say when the requested emails would be sent, but hopefully those will be sent tomorrow!! The wait is definitely torture!

Yea, I thought he said he could scan and email decision letters by Thursday or Friday, because the committee was meeting today (Wednesday). I emailed him and asked if he would mind sending mine electronically and he said it wasn't a problem.

Good luck everyone! Let me know if u get the email!

Has anyone else here been looking at property prices in Suwanee/Duluth? They're insane. We could get a mortgage on a 3000+ sqft home and pay just a little more than we currently pay per month for a 1250 sqft apartment.

has anyone made a facebook group?

I've had all my letters in since 10/15 and haven't heard anything yet. Should I be worried? I'm a California resident though, and I think someone in this thread said this school gives preference to Southeastern states? Not sure if that's true. Really, really want to interview here.

Yea I found some apartments that would be averages prices even for the smallish town I live in. It's crazy you can get a super nice apt in suwanee for under $1200. Not cheap, but when you think about how close it is to ATL, you would think everything would be crazy expensive.

I remember Tristin specifically stating that whoever e-mails him for the admissions decision will receive the scanned version tomorrow (Thursday). Also he will be sending the official mail out tomorrow so depending on where you live, you will receive them either on Friday or next week.

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY FOR TOMORROW! I will keep you guys updated.

By the way, the Facebook group should also be started for class of 2018!

Are you saying it has been started or should be? If it's already started can you post the title or link so we can find it? Thanks!

I recommend looking into the Lawrenceville area (I'm a GA resident). It is a bit further from the campus, but only by a few miles.
Suwannee and Duluth have had a particular increase in the number of people moving to those areas over the years, so naturally they are more expensive. Also, I remember one of the faculty/students at PCOM mention there is a discount specifically for PCOM students in certain areas of suwannee? I dunno which areas they were referring to but you can always call and ask (or wait until orientation?).

I was saying that it should be started haha. I think I looked today in the morning and I did not see anything started for class of 2018.

And I wouldn't be able to start it because I have not heard back if I am accepted yet or not... lol

We saw some homes down in Lawrenceville as well. But that's like 5 more minutes away from the Whole Foods in Duluth. 😛

On my interview day, Trena said to contact her before finalizing on a place to live. She helps students in deciding every year and has information from previous students, so she can make recommendations based on that sort of info.

Anybody have a general idea on how good the residency match is for pcom-ga? I saw the official list on website but was slightly concerned due to small amount of variety in specialties and less # of people matched compared to pcom philly.

I really know little info. about match/residencies so any information could help...

The Philadelphia campus has double the class size of the Georgia campus, so there are more people matching. I'm not sure about the % of specialization. It could be due to differences in missions for each campus or the type of applicants they each attract.

Any update guys??

I'm like... counting every second for any e-mail.... lol Refreshing non-stop.

The variety is probably due to less people in the GA campus than in the philly campus (like teres stated).
But there are people in the GA campus matching into competitive residencies like ortho, neuro surgery, and uro, so this, to me, is a good thing.

The only concern i have is that the numbers for the match list dont really add up. pcom philly has about 240-260 students on the match list. pcom GA has around 70-80?
percentage wise, philly has a much higher match rate given that the enter class sizes are 268 vs 135, respectively.
But this could probably be due to more DO/dual programs offered there, resulting in more people graduating/matching at different times.
And a big chuck of the people who do match in the philly campus are matching within the pcom affiliations in that area. From what i know, the philly network there is HUGE compared to the relatively new network GA has.

Still... it makes you wonder where the other ~30-40% of people who dont match end up.... haha.

Here's a huge point that I forgot to mention: the original class at the Georgia campus was around 80, if I'm remembering correctly. The class size has only recently grown to 135, so the recent graduates are from smaller class sizes, and the matches show that.

Also, remember that match lists only tell part of the story. If a student wanted to go into a less competitive field, it would be great to match in such a field. Looking from the outside, it is impossible to know that. If they wanted to match into a more competitive field but couldn't, the match may not be considered as good. This applies to all schools' match lists.

Oh i didnt know about the change in class size!
this makes me feel a lot better! lol.

Exactly, which is why looking at match lists isn't really a good metric to look at. Attrition rates and trends in Step 1/COMLEX scores are likely more telling of how well a program prepares its students.

For those with questions about graduation and what not, this is your best source:
http://www.aacom.org/data/applicantsmatriculants/Pages/default.aspx

I would not worry about attrition or anything, PCOM-GA is top notch, ALL schools will have a small number that just leave for a variety of reasons. Also, match lists, as Carl Seitan said are different for many reasons, including individual goals and what not. PCOM is a great school, I absolutely loved this school. Can't wait to hear from them...I'm nervous man😱

From last years thread it seemed like Trena started the FB group? Also other schools would have an upperclassman start it so they would be available to answer questions so idk if we should try to start one or wait? I'll be looking for some roommates so the sooner the FB group the better haha
