Thanks friend. The timing was a little funny with the holidays coming up. Now mama getfat had something to brag about to the family. Idk how you guys deal with it but its really awkward and I feel like a big fat phony.

Yeah its a big accomplishment buts the first step of many before we contribute to society.

What's there to feel phony about? You were accepted into medical school. You're allowed to be excited about it. It's a huge accomplishment!

Doesn't it feel amazing to know that you're going to become a doc? We're all going to contribute to society one day, and it's lit!

It's called imposter syndrome and I totally can relate!

Not to harp on this, but I really want to say something that had an impact on me from before because I felt very similarly to you. One of my interviewers at ACOM said something that particularly struck me. While opening up about family struggles, and the impact it had on my grades, he told me that it is very important to be able to "take your successes, and failures well." He basically said that for what I went through, a few C's is nothing to be ashamed about and that I should be proud of how far I have gotten. He went on in more detail, but essentially the message was that in order to be happy with your professional career, you really need to give yourself credit when it's due, and forgive yourself when you make mistakes. You should be very proud of your acceptance @getfat (and everyone else on this thread). Only about 40% of MD/DO applicants receive an acceptance (in the US) and I guess it's hard to appreciate it when you are an SDN junkie (like myself lol) and compare yourself to the other top students on this site and in general. Be proud that you are going to become a physician, and really enjoy the rest of the cycle because a lot can change from now till April.

imposter syndrome

You are totally right! Its just funny you don't think you would fall prey to stuff like that but it happens to everybody :dead:

Edit: Also thanks for the advice @HFlash! Im sure we all needed to hear that during this crazy application cycle :highfive:

OK this question may have been asked on last years thread and I kind of remember seeing something about it but I cannot find it. Does PCOM give you extra loan money in first year to buy a laptop? I Just read over the laptop requirement portion and my current computer isn't going to make it much longer, but I doubt I can afford to buy a computer outright with all the other expenses coming up..

You can take out as much loan money as limit is. You can get $40,500 for the unsubsidized loan and then I think $30,000 ish from the PLUS loan. As far as a specific amount for specifically buying a laptop, that is not the case.

I know that LECOM-B gives you 1k in loans more the first year to make up for the laptop requirement. No idea about this place. Would be a good idea to call financial aid I guess.

And FYI: For what we are using the laptops for, more than $400 is overkill.

Hey! If I'm not mistaken you can... It's like a laptop loan request form you fill out and return to financial aid. I think it's a reimbursement. I'll ask one of my friends who completed that paperwork for her laptop and let you know more!

Anyone know if PCOM accepts of LOR from lab professors?

Cheers.

He taught the lab section only.
Does he know you well enough? Does he understand the rigorous curriculum of Med school and knows your ability to learn the material? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself, because LOR are important for the schools to ascertain your abilities. It would be unwise to squander a LOR from someone who barely knows you and writes a general letter compared to someone who knows you personally. As long as the letter is from a science professer it should be fine.

Thanks for the feedback yall. I've been a little hesitant to submit a secondary due to it being $75, but what the heck.

Also, does anyone know of any affordable housing in the area? All the rentals I see in the area are mansions lol.

$75 is pretty standard for DO schools. If you are going to apply this year, I would do so asap. You are submitting pretty late in the cycle. Go ahead if you have above average stats. Otherwise, I would wait till next year to apply.

Also the housing can run at around 800 - 1200 a month depending if you roomate with someone and/or how far you are willing to drive. That's what the students said during the interview day.

So I found out for sure about the laptop loan situation if anyone is/will be in a similar situation. I will first have to buy the laptop and then send the reciept and a COA increase form to financial aid. They will increase the total loan award up to 1200

Does anyone know the computer preference for this school?
Did you pay the deposit yet? They sent us the laptop requirements in one of the many welcome emails lol. Basically any computer that has the specs they require. I think Im gonna get a mac air..as much as that pains me to say it , I want good battery life and an easy/reliable system. I have a surface pro 3 that legitimately started messing up right after my warranty ended. And the battery lasts like 3 hours.

Buy what you budgets allow. The program for taking the exam seems to have a better comparability with windows than Macs though people with Macs have no problems. Each seat will have a power outlet for you to plug in your computer should you need to. But one and expect to keep it for at least two years if. It for your duration of med school.

Wait, did you already pay the 2nd pre-tuition deposit?

I got like 3 welcome emails but it was about Matriculation agreement, financial aid. Well see if i get anything like that over the next couple weeks.
Thanks for the help @Noxy and @GrumpyMS

You won't be disappointed! Costly but worth it! All of the other laptops ive owned went all wacky after owning it for a year, my macbook air works exactly as it did when I bought it two years ago! Added to the fact that you don't need an Antivirus software and it is a win win situation! (In my best buy sales person voice) lol.

No just the first one. And @getfat the email that has the nucleus login and pcom email has a welcome booklet attached to it. Thats where I found the laptop requirements. When traveling for Thanksgiving on the way home I was bored as heck so I read that whole thing haha. It really doesn't tell you that much.

From what I remember during interview day, there are a bunch of AC adapters for plugging in computers. So your laptop battery doesn't have to last a million years to be viable lol.

True, im thinking of times when studying in other places, not just at the school. Also leaving it plugged in forever just kills the battery even more (according to my mom lol) I wish I didnt need a new one..the surface pro 3 cost an arm and a leg, but it is honestly such a hassle for me on top of the hardware and system issues ive been experiencing. The keyboard I bought with it barely works as well after returning it 3x. My mom basically fixes computers for the government and cant figure mine out, of course my luck lol. I have heard the surface pro 4 is MUCH better if anyone was thinking about that one..Do you already have one you are planning to use?

Leaving anything plugged in after reaching 100% kills the battery. If your laptop is functionally slow and old, sure it's worth buying a new one. I have a 2 year old laptop which I have used for mid level gaming and schooling with a battery of 2 hours or so, so that is more than enough for med school what med school needs. You are going to be spending a lot of time sitting down in one place anyways lol. Med school aside from the volume of information, will be similar to UG.

How soon after paying the initial $250 deposit and sending in the tech standards did you guys get Nucelus login? I sent it both in on the 28th (but my deadline to pay is December 4th) so I'm paranoid if they got it or not....

My deposit was due on the 12th, I payed it on the 11th (pay day). They sent me my login details on the 16th, before I mailed off the the tech standards.

Did you explicitly get a log-in username + password in the email? Is there a link?
Yes. We got a log in and pass in one of the emails for nucleus. It's also the same one for the pcom email. That info came in subsequent emails, a few days after the other emails..you might not have gotten it yet.

I have not received that email yet either. I think our group simply has not received the information yet.

I was watching the President's Report for 2016 and I saw that there are several offered residencies that are in ACGME pre-accreditation status for Internal Medicine, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, etc. I was wondering what does that mean for the class of 2021 and if we would be in a disadvantage for participating while its in pre-accreditation status. Thanks!!
