Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just read online that they save five seats for Delaware residents through the DIMER program! Woohoo! Any other DE people applying??

I still haven't gotten my secondary 🙁

For those who got it, when were your primaries sent out?

I sent my primary out June 1st and received the secondary Tuesday (July 31st).

I haven't heard a thing from either PCOM. >.<

But then again my application wasn't released until 7/19.

My aacomas was released 6/24.

I received the fee waiver.... has anyone on this thread gone through the protocols to get that acknowledged by the admissions office? There is nothing on the email regarding this!
Help!

this is going to be a tough essay to write with only 250 words allowed =(

Primary released late June and still no secondary. PCOM is in my top 3 for DO schools so I really hope I get it soon.

I submitted my primary June 2nd. It was verified/released to my schools's on June 24th. I got my secondary on Aug 1st.

Finally got my PCOM secondary. I got it at 9pm pacific time, so I guess someone was up late sending out secondaries. Or maybe they have computers sending out emails at random times. At least I have all my DO secondaries now!

What do I do about this Dean's Letter requirement from my undergrad? How do you get one?

I'm having the same problem as my school doesn't have a committee to write a letter. PCOM said the letter should say you were i good standing with the school with no disciplinary actions. I've talked to a lot of people and finally PCOM said they would take a letter from my university's registrar as deans aren't allowed to access info about disciplinary actions at my school.

Long story short: just start emailing everyone! 😛

Secondary received this morning! I added PCOM after my initial submission, so they did not get my app til 7/5.

Any idea how long it will take to receive interviews once they receive all the information? I assume it will be later than last years since the secondaries just came out...?

Since the secondary email says interviews start in September, I would hope they'd be quick about it!

Still nothin but crickets over here, I was released 6/26

just received and submitted my pcom secondary today. still no word from georgia campus tho

Hey all

I am bit ____. My primary through AACOMAS was release 7/19, but no word from PCOM yet. This is the only school that has not sent me the 2ndary request. Should I be worried? take it as a rejection? or call and find out whats up?

I hope, for your sake, that it's just because they're slow/unorganized. Everyone should get a secondary, so I'm not sure what PCOM's excuse is.

If I already talked about how I influenced someone's life in the primary, albeit briefly, should I find something else to talk about in the secondary? I'm running out of people that I influenced...So much writer's block!

you're better off writing what makes the best story and is most relevant to you. If you wrote about it in the primary thats OK, just add another perspective to the story.

long time lurker...

Also released 7/26 still haven't heard anything. Have heard back from all my other schools except this one, and New England

It's a difficult essay. Don't give up. Go to an open house to motivate you.

I finally got the secondary a few days ago but now I need to get an advisor's letter 🙁

The worst part is that I thought about this requirement when I was getting my other letters, but I decided to wait until after graduation and I just plain forgot.

secondary received last night around 8pm. lol

I've just recently started prowling these threads to try to find out how long it was taking secondaries to come out. I've gotten a few, but PCOM has been silent. It's probably my top choice so I want to get this show on the road, but it seems like not too many haven't gotten a secondary yet.

Anyway, I happened to see that people wanted feedback on the July open house and I didn't see any reply (of course, I don't think I read every single reply) so here's a little feedback...

The facilities all seemed really nice. PCOM likes to boast in their brochures about the family-like atmosphere that the school holds and even just spending the 3-4 hours there that evening you could sense it. The staff was all really nice, and so were all the students that were present. The OMM demonstration was awesome and the person who was leading it got me even more excited for a career in osteopathic medicine. It was all pretty awesome and only helped the schools number one position on my list.

I used my faculty mentor for one, so she had access to my grades and what not. Maybe that should suffice? 😕

I had a question about the undergrad advisor letter requirement, too. I emailed PCOM yesterday afternoon and had a response before 6pm. Basically, they want a letter from your pre-med advisor saying you were in a good standing with no disciplinary actions. I asked if I could use my grad school advisor and they said that they want a letter from your your undergrad school. It is problematic for me because it's been 10 years since I've spoken to my advisor. I'd be curious to see how other people have been able to address this requirement with PCOM. But the main point of my post - email them, they are very responsive (at least in my case they were). Good luck!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to attend any of the events at PCOM and it seems like the last one was yesterday. Does anyone know if they are planning to have additional events in the near future? Thanks,

Emailed the secondary today and sent the check in the mail yesterday! Hopefully PCOM starts sending II's in August!

This whole requirement to have another letter just to say that you were in good standing is kind of silly in my opinion. I don't know about anyone else's official transcripts but mine state whether or not I was in good standing for each semester.

Yeah, it's a pain. Just another hoop. I'm getting good at hoop-jumping. 🙄

Well I may just kiss my chances at PCOM goodbye then. I have no such letter and no way of really getting one, but do have 6 II's so far. I hate to limit myself but I guess that's how's it's gonna be.

If you have 6 II's already, your odds of getting in somewhere are pretty good, IMHO. So if it were me and PCOM was not my first choice or one of my top choices, I'd probably do the same.

6 IIs wow!! That is amazing. Mind sharing stats and which schools?

Mine does too, did PCOM tell you that it would be acceptable?

Anyone else still waiting on a secondary? Still nothing for me. Delivered primary nearly a month ago.

No problem. sGPA 3.32 cGPA 3.45 30O MCAT. 800+ hours volunteer non-clinical 400+ hours volunteer medical interpreter for hospitals 50 hours shadowing DO's
I think my EC's and MCAT helped balance my GPA which wasn't awful to begin with.
Interviews scheduled with Midwestern AZCOM, AT Still SOMA, DMU, NOVA, both LECOM campuses. Problem is I wasn't expecting nearly so many interviews and I have no idea which schools are better than others. My main objective is a school with good match lists for residency and good clinical rotation sites (as in I don't have to travel all over the country for each year). No specific specialty in mind, but I'd like to keep my options open. Any suggestions on good schools?

Just got it at about 11:45PM EST.

Where are you guys sending your LORs?
