Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They told us during the interview to make sure not to throw it out without looking at it. There were cases where the person automatically assumed it was a rejection and ripped it up without reading it - come to find out it was an acceptance. Acceptances and rejections are the same size.
Oh yeah I remember them saying that haha

This might be silly question, but I understand that PCOM does not offer on campus housing, so is there a worry about the crime rate in Philly?
City ave is generally a good area, as is Center City. General rule of thumb is dont be stupid and walk alone with your wallet hanging out at 1am. Be smart and youll enjoy Philadelphia. West philly is the only bad area (surrounding Temple).

Alright, cool. Thanks for the response.

You will be fine. A lot of students live in Manayunk. It's about ten minutes from campus.

Has anyone received an incomplete secondary email? I checked banweb, but they've received everything from my end. There is not, however, a date under the status column 🙁

Edit: I just spoke to someone from admissions. Apparently, I need another faculty letter of rec. Uh Oh.

how many did you send them? are they super strict about letters?

They are pretty strict about application materials, and you have to be on top of everything (be your own advocate). Unlike a lot of other osteopathic med schools, PCOM doesn't tend to have a good email notification system for their applicants when aps are complete/incomplete.

I sent in two from my undergrad and one from an MD that I shadowed who happens to be faculty at a med school. I thought the last letter would count as a faculty LoR, but no.

Hi what do you mean by a date under the status column...the boxes underneath my status column are all blank..but there are dates under the column that said "received" ..does that mean I'm complete?

How many students live in Center City?
Generally living in CC isn't cheap, and for the most part grad/med students are flat broke. I'd be willing to bet not all that many. Most of the people I speak with live just outside Philadelphia or somewhere along City Ave.

Oh, I'm just assuming a date goes under the status column. Perhaps nothing at all. I'm not sure :/

I believe you're complete if you receive an email saying so. Best bet is to call them of course.

hmm..does PCOM give out complete email??..I only received the email that said they received my secondary app

I interviewed Oct. 31st and I haven't heard anything yet... I check my mailbox every hour in anticipation though.

Are decisions sent by email or mail?

How bad will that 7 hurt me?

Good chance here?

I spoke to director of admissions after a presentation at my school

Could anyone chime in here.... My all parts of my secondary were complete Nov. 1st. I know its late but what are the chances PCOM will send out another round of interviews this year or does anyone know if they are done until Jan?

Thanks for the response. I understand they interview into March I just wanted to know if anyone knows whether there is any chance of getting an interview by the end of Dec. or if I should not expect any possible response until after the holidays

If you submitted late you'll probably have to wait a bit longer before you're offered consideration or etc.

It's impossible for anyone of us to answer this question with any certainty. You just have to wait like the rest of us.

How receptive is this school to responding to phone calls about application status? All my materials have been received since August 20th and I haven't heard a peep. Is this a pre-interview hold? Should I give them a call and do you think a letter of intent would help?

Wish I could get an interview invite. PCOM is literally a 20 min drive from my parents house lol.

I've called and emailed, and both times I got a version of (paraphrasing of course) "we get so many applications, we will contact you when we want to."

For those that interviewed on Oct. 31st... do you think we will hear back today? Fingers crossed!

Call them to confirm they have everything. This school is notorious for "misplacing" things.

I know two groups interviewed oct 30th/31st but have they sent out anymore II's?

I interviewed October 30th and still haven't heard anything!! My mail already came today

I think the school simply has enough applicants of interest for the school to not process people completely >.>

I wonder what's taking them so long to make decisions. Maybe the committee only does meet once a month.

I see PCOM and PCOM-Ga offer work study. But what kinda work study can a med student do during m1 and m2? The only thing I can think of is sitting at a desk type job where you are rarely disturbed.

Mostly sitting around in the library and stacking books.

Has anyone heard from pcom yet? That interviewed October 30th or later

Nope.... I am getting really anxious! I just heard from my second choice school and got in so hopefully we hear soon!!

Accepted!!! First school! So pumped! Loved PCOM when I visited and very happy to be accepted here!
