Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

Well delaware has no instate medical school allopathic or osteopathic so PCOM likes delaware kids because they know they're going to stay in the area. That's what my advisor at my college (UDEL) told me.

However, I know like 5 delaware kids with really 27-30 plus scores and high gpas that have been accepted so I'm not super hopeful. I think though giving interviews to DE students is a courtesy thing though. I was president of a large student rso and a student advisor of sorts so I know that many students who are interested in DO have been interviewed at pcom over the years but not necessarily accepted. On the other hand most of the pre med population at UD applies to jefferson and the other philly MD schools instead.

I did get into wvsom and am interviewing at lecom in a few weeks!
Also a DE resident and former UD student here. I interviewed at pcom last week and am feeling like my chances are less based on what you said! 27 MCAT, 3.97 cGPA, 3.95 sGPA, good EC's, and Mexican. Loved pcom so hopefully they love me back!

I am pretty set on UNECOM, as I really love the school and it's close to home. But I have never seen NYCOM or PCOM, and they are both fairly close to home as well, so I'd like to compare the three if at all possible and decide which school fits me the best. I'd love to hear your views on NYCOM though, for sure.

I didn't get my MCAT score till mid August, and didn't think it would be competitive enough for MD school. I didn't even start an AMCAS application, and my essay was very DO specific, so I would have had to go through the whole process of sending my transcripts to AMCAS, rewriting my essay, and getting verified, likely adding a month and a half or more. I likely wouldn't have had my primary completed until mid-to-late October, then would be filling out secondaries in late October and November, would have my secondaries complete in November or December. But like I said, I'm perfectly happy going to DO school. The only reason I would even consider MD is because I'd like to practice outside the country eventually and it's easier to do with a MD than a DO. I really like UNECOM, a lot, and can't see much that an MD school would offer me that I can't get at UNECOM in relation to my long-term career goals.
I didn't get my MCAT score until September and then mid October the second time around and I still applied to 13 schools (12 MD, 1 DO) (6 II's so far) so you totally could've done that! But it sounds like you are leaning more towards DO school anyways so no worries. I myself would have applied to more DO schools if not for the fact that I did not have any physician recommendations (MD or DO), which prevented me from applying to almost every DO school.

It wasn't just the MCAT. I didn't think I'd be competitive for MD, so I hadn't even started my AMCAS app. I'd have to get new letters (mine were geared toward DO specifically), rewrite my DO oriented personal statement, and have my transcripts sent out. I'd be looking at a pretty late submit date, basically. Congrats on the invites btw!

Does anyone know how long PCOM interviews for? I have been complete since 8/14 and I sent an update letter in December, and I have not heard anything from them since August. I know admissions is always a random crap shoot, but what do you think my chances are of hearing any good news with a 34 MCAT 3.3 cGPA 3.2 sGPA and a 3.88 GPA in my masters?

Lots of high stat people hearing nothing from PCOM. Total crapshoot here, unfortunately.

Thanks! I didn't even apply to half of the schools I sent my primary app to before October, and applied to 6-7 more schools from mid October to early December. I keep getting waitlisted, so I'm sure it does pay to have everything done early. Sooo yeah, I understand where you're coming from. u_u

Don't worry you have high stats you'll definitely get it. I feel like high stats IS or OOS is a good shot at this point in the cycle.
Former UD student too!

I wouldn't call a 3.3 high stat but yes of course 34 mcat is exceptional. Im sure that they think a 34 mcater would rather go MD than DO. I feel like if an applicant is 30+ they usually have a good shot at MD so some DO schools might not want to waste an acceptance. Idk thats what im guessing.

per Goro, this notion is utter nonsense. the higher, the better.

Dang after all this time I get a complete email tonight. I thought the email "PCOM Supplemental Received" I got on 12/5 was the complete email

I just received that same email as well. I am a little confused. I had submitted my app a really long time ago.

Hmmm, me too... Im hoping this is a glitch because like many of you I have been "complete" since September - so I thought!!!

Edit: I received it from both campuses...

Got the same email. Only for PA as I have already withdrawn from GA.

wtf I just got an email stating that I was complete..here I am thinking that I was compete back in November. Oh well.

Just thought I'd also share I received a complete email. I sent everything in September haha

Thats weird, I got the complete email as well, but for some reason when I read it carefully, it said that my application for their graduate school has been submitted. Has the rest of your "completed application" emails also specified that your application for graduate school is complete?
My email read:
"Thank you once again for submitting your Application for Admission to the PCOM Graduate School program at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for our class entering in the Fall 2014 term. We are pleased to know of your interest in PCOM!"

Yes mine did too. However, I think it is only to designate that we are with the COM ("Graduate school program") and not just for their post-bac or something else.

Yeah? Didn't you know if you don't receive an interview, you are automatically enrolled in their 6 year graduate program which guarantees you an interview after its completion. Pretty sweet linkage program. 😉🙄

Wait, so does this mean that those who got the email got rejected and was automatically complete for the post bac program?

My post was a joke but I think everyone is a bit confused about the 'grad school' part of the e-mail though. Not sure if this indicates anything about our status as rejected or to be considered still!

submitted in october, email of completion recently...really.. 😵🤔:annoyed:

Only six years to wait for an interview! Sweet, PCOM here I come when I am 33!

LOL I also got a complete email this evening from PCOM. I thought I have been completed a long time ago.

Yeah I got that "complete to the graduate school program" as well, I submitted all of my stuff in early August, received an email August 14th saying all of my application materials had been received. I sent them an email asking what the complete email was about. I'll let you know what they say in response. I also specifically asked if I was still under consideration for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program. So hopefully this email was a glitch. I am also Out of State.

EDIT: received an automated email that it could take a week to get a response, so stay tuned.

I am very happy with my MCAT score, however I applied broadly and I want to be a doctor first, whether my name on my white coat is followed by an MD or DO does not really matter to me, as long as I can provide the best medical care I possibly can to my patients. I am highly interested in learning more about OMM and I am very open to utilizing it in my future medical practice. So I sure hope my MCAT doesn't make PCOM shy away from my application, because I would certainly consider PCOM to be high on my list of schools.

Mercy, I just got the complete email now, two months after submitting all required materials. All this time I thought I was complete. Yikes

I just got the complete email today. I am in-state and already live in Philadelphia. I completed my application in August.

Haha, soooooo... what has been going down for the last 4 months... I hope it is a glitch. I know during this cycle they had email issues before. A while back I got an email that i was complete or something at PCOM Georgia. I didn't apply to that campus. A bit later they sent out an error notification to everyone that received it. I am sure it is a similar scenario now...at least i hope.

Anyone know the last day for interviews?

heard from a friend of a friend who just got in that the class is only 1/2 full at this point. good news considering its almost february! not sure how she would know this though haha maybe she asked

I've had all my materials submitted and received by October 16 and they've just emailed me that my application is complete now

Got the same e mail. It is so hard to keep waiting 🙁 Plus my last semester's sgpa is not looking good so I am even more worried. sigh

Yeah, I got the same email and I had my stuff in back when temperatures were still warm. So, a really long time ago.

I called both campuses and both seem to have no idea why we got the email, or even seem to really understand what I was talking about. Although they were able to confirm that I have been complete for a while (since September) they basically just said, "yeah your complete and still under review - no changes thus far." Therefore, I would suspect that if you did receive the email confirmation that they have received your supplemental and the online application check site they gave us in that email has dates next to all of the items your good to go. Hope that helps all of you!

Thanks for calling them. I was actually about to call them, but since they don't seem to know how these emails got out, i am going to save them the hassle of talking to another person about the same error.
