Philadelphia COM - Philadelphia (PCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Financial Aid for 2015-2016 is now available. Not much us first years can really fill out. There are short essays for current students.

Interested how much - if anything I get, with no remarkable ethnic status and being out of state

Interviewing on March 18!! So excited, this is my top choice and I'm really hoping to get in this cycle. Any interview tips anyone??

Be sure to explain why you want to be a DO and why you will fit in at PCOM. From there, know what experiences and qualities about yourself you want to highlight. You can then steer the discussion towards emphasizing these points.

Thanks JW2020 for the tips. Thanks Goldenboy48, BurntFlower, Premed9242. @ PreMed9242 I had no idea they were still sending II until I received mine

Has anyone who's gotten a delayed decision gotten an update yet? If so, when was your interview date? Thank you.

Can some one tell me the type of interview PCOM has. Is it a one-on-one, two-on-one, group, something else? And can you tell me about your experience?

The interview is open file and pretty standard. For me it was two panelists (an adcom and a physician) who had a list of questions to ask me, then tailored the interview according to my responses. Make sure you know why you want to be a physician, what about DO appeals to you, and why you would fit in well at PCOM. Also know what points about yourself you want to highlight so that you can steer the interview towards those areas.

I had a morning session interview in mid february. There were about 10 of us. We had breakfast at the cafeteria and chatted with the dean for an hour, followed by tours for an hour. Then interviews for last 2 hours. This was 8-12. The interviews are approximately 30 minutes and they call you in one by one. You meet with 2 faculty members (sometimes a student) and they ask you standardized questions. This means that everyone gets asked the same set of questions during their interview. The interview itself was not bad. But I felt the faculty asked me some specific hypothetical questions which I don't believe were standard but w/e. I think overall I did well.

Below is a pretty good rundown. Few differences with my group. We had breakfast with the anatomy professor and a med student (not the dean).

While the list of questions was standard, I was asked many question off the list specific to my background. Per the person interviewing me, "your background is too peculiar/interesting to ask the standard set of question, but bear with me, I also need to complete this checklist." Note: none of the questions were hard. Similar to the person below, it seemed like they were trying to add appropriate questions specific to your application in addition to the normal ones.

If you are staying at a hotel, I highly recommend the Homewood as it's only a few feet away from the admissions office.

So its been 4 weeks since my interview. If they actually stick to their 5 week decision policy then I should find out by next Friday...kinda sad that they are waiting until taht last week to make decisions though...sigh

Exactly a month ago (2/13) decisions were made and letters were sent- I received a deferred decision letter! So that means letters may be sent Friday the 20th of this month to be in our hands the week following!

When did you get your letter? I did interview on the 13.

I interviewed 2/5 and got the letter 2/18. A student had said that letters were going out 2/13!
Oh ok that makes sense. I thought u said they made decisions for 2/13 interviews and letters were sent. Guess they send out all the interview letter notifications from 2/13 onwards at the same time. Thanks

According to what you said, should I received the letter by now? I interviewed on the 2/11

acceptances are always going to be phone calls first?

OOS student applying here next cycle (lived in PA for years during childhood) top DO choice!
29 MCAT 3.7 GPA with 4 publications and tons of volunteer/shadowing
Can anyone tell me what worked for them and if my stats match up?? Thanks!

They're probably sending out your letter today. You just barely missed interviewing in time for the last committee meeting
What makes you think the committee met and sent letters today instead of their 5 week timeline, which would be next week?

I've heard that they met Tuesday and sent out letters today (they usually send them the Friday after meeting)

I didn't get any mail today 🙁🙁. If anyone heard anything back, please update on here. We are all waiting!

Apply early, your stats are very good for PCOM. Honestly I wish I could tell you what grants people interviews at PCOM but they definitely send ii's to a wide range of applicants. However if you apply early you'll have a very good shot.

Awesome thank you!! I definitely plan on submitting my app early

Hey all, I have my interview Wednesday and I just have a quick question. How long will they typically give me to answer each question.. I am trying to compile my thoughts, and I tend to talk a lot so I want to make sure I have enough time to give them as much info as I can without getting cut off and not being able to finish saying what I want to say. Thanks!

I don't think there's a standard time! Answer succinctly but with a complete answer to their question that also steers your interview to talk about other positive things in your app that you're passionate about!

Edit: now that I read that it's not helpful but that's what I've got for you! Best of luck!

Interviewed 2/9/15, received a letter in the mail today 2/16/15, dated 2/13/15... so everyone who interviewed around then be on the lookout for your letters soon! My decision is delayed pending submitting updated MCAT information.

Would you have to retake the MCAT then? Did they ask questions about your previous MCAT scores?
