WELCOME TO SEASON 12 OF THE MAFIA CHAMPIONSHIP - SDN PRACTICE EDITION

1745688727217.jpeg

General Game Information
Hosted By:
@WildZoo @kaydubs @supershorty
Start Date: April 26th, 2025
Start of Day/End of Day: 9PM EDT To allow time for manual action processing and notifications, night action submission deadline will be 8pm EDT.
Phase Lengths:
24/24
Elimination Mechanics: Deadline Elimination (person with most votes is eliminated at the end of the deadline). In case of a tie, one of the tied players will randomly be eliminated. Sleep is a valid vote. Majority elimination will not be enabled during day 1 and is not required at any point for the elimination. Starting on Day 2 and until VOLO, majority will be enabled at 12 hours after SoD. VOLO is an exception to the majority delay, during which majority will be enabled immediately. If day ends close to 24 hours before deadline (ex. 23 hours), night may be shortened.
Night Chat In Thread: No, thread will be locked during Night Phases
Out of Thread Communication: Only the Mafia team may communicate with each other outside of the thread (24/7)
VOLO Rules: Votes are automatically locked in at VOLO. I.e. when the game reaches a point where one more miselimination leads to a loss, you cannot change your vote once you have cast it.
Minimum Posting Requirement: Minimum 10 posts per Game Day
Maximum Posts Allowed: 125 posts per player per Game Day (restriction is lifted 1 hour before EOD though, so if you've reached your max you can post again at that time).

SETUP: Wolf Cube
x9 Vanilla Town
x1 Town Tracker
x1 Town Doctor | Even Cycle | Hidden Modifier on Flip
x1 Town Doctor | Odd Cycle | Hidden Modifier on Flip

x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Track, x2 Roleblocker) | Ninja x1 | Alignment Flip Only
x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Motion Detector, x2 Roleblocker) | Strongman x1 | Alignment Flip Only
x1 Mafia Jack of All Trades (x1 Vigilante, x1 Role Cop, x1 Watcher) | Cycle 2+ | Alignment Flip Only

Important Notes

  • Mafia flips only show the alignment of the Mafia player, whereas Town flips usually show the full role of the Town player. The only exceptions are Town Doctors, who will only flip as Town Doctor and their modifier (Odd Cycle or Even Cycle) will not flip - see the last bullet point.
  • Mafia JOAT abilities do not cycle after they are used (they only get the stated ability uses).
  • Mafia can target Mafia with all role actions except the factional kill
  • Hidden Modifier stops the role's modifier from being revealed upon death and to investigatives - ex. Town Doctors will only flip as Town Doctor, so it will not be publicly revealed whether the role was Odd Cycle or Even Cycle

Role Descriptions:

Frequently Asked Questions

Actions which modify other actions are processed before the actions they modify. When actions would modify each other in a inter-dependent dependency cycle, they are processed in the following order:
  1. Roleblocks
  2. Doctors
  3. Kills
  4. Investigations
The order in which an action was submitted during the night will not impact the order in which the actions are processed.

These are the results you will get when you submit certain actions.

  • Non-investigative actions that do not gain anything from their actions do not get feedback of any kind.
  • Players will not be informed if their action was roleblocked. Actions with reports (Tracker, Motion Detector, Role Cop) will show the target in the report and tell them if it failed, but not why or how, as shown below.
  • Investigative actions return results even if the target dies on the same night.
  • Actions that count as visits are counted as visits even if the actor dies on the same night.
  • Investigative roles (Tracker, Role Cop, Motion Detector) when roleblocked: Your action on Player B failed.
  • Trackers when tracking a person that didn't visit anyone: Player C did not visit anyone.

Reminder for the friends that you can monitor your own post count by hovering over (or tapping on mobile) the image of your avatar on the thread within the pre-vet subforum.

I will request an exact post count from you if my estimates indicate you are below min or above max.

How do I submit my action?
Use your role PM. It is helpful if you bold your final action, however we will generally process the last action you submit before deadline (8pm EDT).

What does it mean if Mafia kills are assigned?
Assigned kills means the member of the mafia team that submitted the last factional night kill target for the Night will be the one assigned to carry out the kill. This game uses Assigned Mafia Kills. Since the kill is being carried out by a specific person, the kill can be blocked or modified by other actions. Assigned kills can seen by other roles including Trackers and Motion Detectors. If the Mafia do not submit a kill in time, then the assigned killer is chosen at random.

Which roles can self-target / target themselves?
No roles in this game are able to self-target.

Will I be told be told if my action was blocked?
No. Players will not be informed if their action was blocked. Actions with reports (investigative roles) will show the target they ended the Night on in the report and tell them if it failed, but not why or how.

What happens if 2+ of the same Blocking roles (e.g. Roleblockers) target each other in a dependency cycle?
In the case of only Roleblockers, they will block actions lower than Roleblock in the order. This means that the players are still trackable to each other that night by Trackers and Motion Detectors. It also means that if one of them is Mafia and happens to simultaneously be the one submitting the factional kill that night in a game with assigned mafia kills, then the kill, and any other actions lower in the order, are blocked. This same principle applies to longer loops. I.e. in a A > B > C > D > A loop, everyone is blocked.

If an X-Shot role is blocked while using one of its shots, do they lose that shot forever?
Yes. A 1-shot Vigilante being blocked while attempting to kill someone will not have their shot refunded.

Can a mafia team choose not to kill anyone during a night?
The Mafia Factional Kill is Mandatory. If the mafia do not submit a target for their kill, then someone will be chosen at random from among the players not on their team, and a random player among the mafia will be chosen to carry out the kill.

Can the mafia submit a factional kill aimed at one of their own members?
No.

If I kill someone, does their night action, if they have one, still succeed?
Yes. Killing someone doesn't prevent them from performing their night action. Refer to the order of operations. All kills happen at the end of the night, and everyone pulls the trigger simultaneously.

Can individual mafia members actions be submitted by their teammates?
No. If the mafia team want to use a role's action, then the player occupying that slot must submit the action themselves, or at least acknowledge the action submission (i.e. actions cannot be submitted for absentee mafia or changed without that player's input).

A REMINDER OF GENERAL RULES, PLUS SOME SPECIFIC TO THIS GAME. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
I have bolded rules/modifications that are atypical for SDN games.

Note that these rules must be followed. We will not hesitate to enact punishment for breaking them, up to and including mod killing.

1. Remember this is a game and is meant to be fun. We will not tolerate personal attacks against other players. Think before you post. Things can get heated, but keep it to accusations and rebuttals about this game.

2. Do not discuss the game outside of this thread and your role PM. There are no PMs in this game outside of ones set up by us. Do not discuss game strategy with people in real life. This game exists in a bubble that only encompasses the thread and your mod-given PMs.

3. Place votes in bold or ####between numerous octothorpes#### using the terms "vote" or "yeet". If you have already placed a vote, you must unvote to place a new one.

4. Once you are dead, you will be added to Dead/Tot chat. Dead players are NOT ALLOWED to post in the thread. Do not react to posts in the thread either. DO NOT DISCUSS THE GAME WITH LIVING PLAYERS.

5. This game has a 10 post per day minimum. Submit a vote and a night action (if you have one) every cycle. If you plan to not use your night action, please let us know. Subs may be available for extenuating life circumstances only, not to replace ghosty players. If you require a sub, please contact the mods directly. Do not post about it on the thread.

6. Direct quoting or copy/pasting of ANY PMs is not allowed - this includes the flavor from your role PM and communications with the mods. Screenshots are not allowed. Fake copy/pasting, quoting, and screenshots are not allowed either. Communications with the mods should not be discussed - we do not exist in-game.

7. Editing posts or votes is not allowed in this game. As shorty and I are site mods, we will be able to tell if you edit, even if you do it quickly 🙂 So don't do it. Do not delete posts under any circumstances, unless instructed to do so by a mod.

8. Thread will be locked exactly at day close and reopened exactly at day start. Do not try to circumvent this by reacting to posts when the thread is locked.

9. The story of this game will generally pull from the Pokemon universe, largely focused in the Kanto region/Generation I Pokemon, and relevant material from the first season of the tv show. Flavor cannot be used to gamesolve. Writeups may or may not reflect actual game events.

If you have questions, please ask the mods privately!

Extra Information for New Players
Please see below for some extra information about playing forum mafia/werewolf on SDN. Note that we typically use wolf/village terminology on this site and that is reflected in some of this information, but as this game is for Mafia Universe practice, mafia and town will be used throughout. You may see players using either terminology.
WW Basics (Adapted from WW 101)

The game is divided into cycles. Each cycle is divided into a day and a night. During the day is when the players decide who they should "yeet" for that day. Villagers are trying to figure out who the wolves are (hence the name of the game WW=werewolf... by day they act like villagers, but by night they kill), and any other non-village entities that might pose a threat. The non-villagers are trying to look like they are doing the same, while actually acting towards their own win conditions. Each of you will cast a vote during the day sessions to yeet someone. When you cast a vote please put your vote in BOLD and use the term "vote" or "yeet", for example, yeet kaydubs. If you cannot use bold, put your vote in octothorpes, like so: ######yeet kaydubs######. You can change your vote from one person to another at any time before the vote is closed by writing unyeet kaydubs, yeet dubz. Whoever has the most votes against them will then be yoten, unless majority is in effect. They will die and are removed from the game.

We then move to the night cycle. This is when the wolves pick who they are going to kill. Also, some villagers have roles that allow them to do things to help the villagers out. Please reply to your role conversation with your night actions if you have any. To make it easier for us to find your final action, please bold it and indicate the night like this:
N1
Mutilate dubz

There will be a writeup after each day session explaining what happened in the yeet and the role of the persons yoten, and also a writeup after the night session similarly. In this game, the flavor will be entirely for fun and will not hint at any particular day or night events (most of it will be pre-written).

The SDN search function is not the best. However, you can use the steps below to search for all of a particular player's posts in the thread in isolation.

Click the "Search" box in the upper right hand of the forum page. Leave the search box blank if you are just looking to find all of the player's posts. In the dropdown, select "This thread". Then type the player's name in the box next to "By: " and click "search"

1745692543475.png

The results will be a list of the player's posts in the game thread in reverse chronological order. Longer posts are snipped, so you will have to click through to be able to read some posts in their entirety. I recommend opening those in a new tab so you don't have to redo your search.

Bandwagon
- A buildup of votes on one player, usually one that quickly reaches the majority of votes

Bus/Bussing - when a wolf backstabs another to gain the trust of the village

ISO - Short for "isolate", refers to when you search for a particular player's posts in the thread to read all of them at once. Often used to evaluate a single player at a time based on tone, or check for consistency in their posts.

Majority - How some votes in WW games operate - the vote closes as soon as someone has more than 50% of the total number of possible votes

Meta - Wolf meta. Village meta. Meta meta meta. This simply refers to various aspects of a player's playstyle, through time, in multiple games, and in different roles.

Mod Flair/Flavor - refers to artistic/creative license taken by the mods in writeups and individual players results. It is common for players to attempt to determine whether a particular portion of these writings is relevant to the game or simply mods having fun. I recommend against attempting such in this game - the flavor is just flavor 🙂

NAI - Not Affiliation Indicative. Usually refers to some aspect of a player's play that does not point to whether they are wolf or village. It simply...is.

NK - night kill - a death that occurs at night in the game. Usually refers to the wolf factional kill but can refer to other deaths as well!

Parity - When wolf numbers equal village numbers. This is how wolves win the game.

Plurality - How most votes in SDN WW games operate - the person who has the most votes when the cycle closes "wins" (and their prize is death)

Pocket - something mysteriously missing from a lot of women's clothing. Also the act of getting another player to trust you, typically by some form of sneaky emotional manipulation

POE - "Pot of Evil" "Pool of Eels" or, if you're boring, Process of Elimination. The suspects that remain when you eliminate your village reads, cleared villagers, etc from the roster.

PR - "Power role" - most often refers to a village role that has an ability (so not vanilla). May also be used to refer to a wolf with an ability.

RNG - Random Number Generator. Refers to the randomization of any part of the game, whether that be role distribution, a random d1 vote, breaking of a tie to determine who gets yoten, or an ability being used on a random player.

Rojo - One of the great old ones, his name has now the common term used to describe the act of accidentally posting something on the thread that was meant for PM, usually when a wolf posts something that was meant for wolf chat.

Scum - a catchall for the informed minority, usually the murderous ones. Someone the village needs to eliminate.

Sheep (verb) - refers to when players echo or follow another player's ideas/reasoning or yeet vote. Usually has a negative connotation.

Soft clear - When a player determines that, in their opinion, another player is not a wolf based on interactions, analysis, or whatever else and NOT through trustworthy mod-given information

Tinfoil - crackpot guesses and theories - something that may be posited by a player on thread just in case they are correct, but is often a little nutty.

Tot - Spectator --> Spectatortot --> Tatertot --> tot. These are the people observing the game from the outside, commenting in their own group chat with the mods.

Tunneling - player A continues to go after player B day after day, perhaps in spite of evidence that player B is village

Vanilla - a player with no special abilities. Can refer to a villager - sometimes called a vanillager - or a wolf, who in that case would have no abilities other than killing. Can also refer to a type of game where no special abilities exist.

VCA - Vote Count Analysis - a way of analyzing the game based on previous votes. The goal is to figure out who the wolves (and the villagers!) are based on the progression of previous days' votes.

Village(r) Code - A terrible way to determine someone's affiliation based on the style/format of their role PM, due to the assumption that wolf PMs will be formatted differently from villager PMs. Don't do it.

VoLo - Vote (correctly) or Lose. Also seen as "Yolo" (Yeet correctly or Lose). This is the point of no return for the village. If anything other than a wolf is voted out during VoLo, village loses the game. Other related terms include MyLo, which is the game state where a misyeet would lose the game for village but no death or the death of a third party would not, and Marvolo, which refers to Volo and Mylo together when there is some doubt about which stage the game is in. The latter MyLo or MarVolo may also be used when night actions could prevent the game from ending overnight, even if a villager is yoten during the day.

Waffle - A delicious breakfast food. Also, the act of switching your vote. If lots of votes are switching around the same time, especially towards the end of the day, we call that a wafflefest

Wagon
- simply refers to the collection of votes for a particular player, no matter how many votes there are or how quickly they were placed

WIFOM - Wine in Front of Me, taken from the poison scene in The Princess Bride. The circular reasoning that results from trying to determine the choices of someone who knows their actions would be analyzed. Probably overused.

We do have a lot in common. The same earth, the same air, the same sky. Maybe if we started looking at what's the same instead of always looking at what's different...well, who knows?

The sun rises over the forests and grasslands of Kanto, awakening creatures great and small across the region. Outside of quiet Pallet Town, wild Pokemon gather around a clear pond in a hidden clearing between the trees. This has long been a safe location for them to live out their lives in freedom, to grow and evolve and thrive without the interference of humans. Here they form their own community and agree to do each other no harm.

But someone has been hunting them. Not just to capture them for training, no, truly hunting them. Two nights ago, they found a pile of tattered Spearow feathers at the base of a tree, directly under a nest of eggs. Now, a Poliwag peers from the water’s surface, taking note of which of his friends and neighbors have appeared, trying to see if anyone is missing.

His heart sinks as he notices something odd at the edge of the water. He hesitates, but knows he must move closer to investigate. He calls out to the others once he confirms what he has seen.

A Squirtle shell, marred by a jagged, gaping crack across its surface, and empty except for a few drops of blood.

Hello friends.

Courtesy notice that I am going to be slightly more annoying than usual in this game. I am entering Champs Mode given that I might play, and that means certain efforts are essential for town to have a fair chance. In this practice game that's extra true with the 125 post cap and only 24 hours.

Back in my day, we only had 12 hours.

Interesting
That's just because there will likely be periods where mods are not here to produce a tally on demand. And it's always helpful to have people double checking when we're doing it manually.

Gonna try to keep track of my post count to give the hosts a hand, but I am will definitely forget at some point and only make it worse.

Understood.

You have any ideas for how to start? I got nothing tbh.

I do, and sometimes it makes people mad. I will do it anyway, though I understand not everyone will feel like it and that's okay.

I'm skipping Meme Time. My posts are going to be almost entirely game-focused. I'll start here:

I appreciate moonstermash acknowledging that she's "got nothing". That's worth a tiny sliver of town credit. Mafia wishing to portray a willingness to start with effort will typically provide it without this immediate shrugging -- and I think that may apply to moonster's archetype more than most.

No. No credit. Easy breezy

I’m in my second night of my in person game and after last night nailing the wolves in game 1 so fast we played a second one and then lone wolfing to victory it they N1’d me tonight.

IM BACK BABY

Nice. I will try to grow this sliver into a pie(?) and be worthy of a town read.

In turn, I think a willingness to 1) make reads early (especially if it isn't standard), 2) consider archetypes, and 3) apply them with specificity like this is pretty towny, for your third post.

Out of curiosity, what would you say my archetype is?

I like AM biting PSV over wasting posts.

I think PSV appears to be comfortable in her own skin.

My previous take on moonster is too weak to be meaningful. It already expired.

I gently suspect Zenge for being quiet and lurky. Just gently. We're being gentle here.

I already forget my post count. Sorry, hosts, that's not going to work. Pester me if you want me to continue, and I will.

You did not just call zenge suspect for being quiet and lurky
JJJ pls

You're a moderately serious player. Somehow this can be viewed as clowning, so let me be clear that it's good and you're good and I'm a fan. You carry the quality humor of your People (Avocado), but you tend to engage with material in a thoughtful and serious way. You're doing it right now.

I think your posts tend to have purpose, and that they spring forth from your brain purposefully. You are less inclined toward herpy derpy posty wosties. That was a coherent comment by me. Everyone understands it.

Strikes me as strange to ask JJJ whether he has any ideas on how to start.
I mean, he basically told us he had a plan for this game, I was curious if it started now or later. And I'm perfectly willing to defer to him (or anyone) who wants to be town captain tbh. (At least until it's D3 and neither they nor I am dead...)

You did not just call zenge suspect for being quiet and lurky
JJJ pls
I sure did! He has one (1) post about nothing in a thread with room for posts about somethings. I am used to Zenge making posts about somethings, even if he isn't necessarily a "high poster". I acknowledge I have played fewer games with him than many others have.
