Rearview Mirror: Matchitis 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uhhh...so based on a search and the last one of these this is just to bitch about current rotations and wish for match day?

Oh ok. Well I started my peds SubI today. EM doesn't qualify for our required SubI rotation so I am doing inpatient peds. Being well into 4th year and having spent last month on radiology its a bit painful to be on an inpatient wards suddenly. I'm on nights this week. Boo.

Can't wait for it to be over, its my last tough thing and then comes match day and 1 more month of outpatient high yield rotations before I'm done!

I don't really have much to complain about, so I will go for making others jealous. Between now and graduation I have a grand total of 6 weeks of, ahem, "work":

2 weeks ethics course (1 paper)
2 weeks public health (attendance)
2 week anesthesia elective (like, nothing)

The rest of the time will be spent on a beach sipping mai tais. 😎

I almost wish I were a 4th year again (minus living out of my car). Especially after nights like last night.

I'll do you one better. I have 12 shifts in the Peds ER left.

What happened last night?

It was actually an emergency department (people were sick), but unfortunately they kept coming in. No documentation took place for about 7 hours, so lots of time after the shift was spent catching up. Not to mention having to spend a few hours with patients after relief showed up just finishing up with them. We don't sign out unless it's psych patients for the most part, so I was there really late tying up loose ends and taking care of a patient who just wouldn't stay sedated that was in status epilepticus (was intubated). Good but bad night.

If he was intubated, status epilepticus, and "wouldn't stay sedated", that means you didn't have enough on board. His "not being sedated" is him seizing, burning up his brain, and, after the antiepileptic meds are on board, general anesthesia is next. He needed phenobarb and/or propofol or more to stop the storm.

We met that level, just took more than expected. I found it was difficult explaining to the parents he was seizing after we had him sedated (before all the meds, he had purposeful movements). The parents were horrible. (the pt was 30-40) Would have been better for them to be out of the room for a longer period of time. Lesson learned.

start 2 weeks of CCU on Monday. Just hoping I'm not oncall that day since its V-Day. Small victories.

What type of shenanigans do you guys' schools plan for Match Day? Open bar parties??

We're having our ceremony at the local pro football stadium...cash bar, with a bar across the street reserved for continued after ceremony/St. Patty's Day celebrations.

School hosts a pre-match breakfast with bottomless mimosas and bloody marys, then off to the Irish Triangle area of the city to celebrate St. Matchricks Day! This year, our class will likely be one hot mess by nightfall.

Good luck to the DOs tomorrow! We'll still have 30 days until the allopathic match.

It's kind of weird for us on account of maybe a third of my friends finding out tomorrow and the rest still sweating and itching till St Patty's Day. Can't believe this all started September 1st, feels like we all have been hashing out the ROL for YEARS.

What are you guys doing for April and May? Right now I don't have anything scheduled, hesitant to sign up for anything until I know if I'm going to have to move for residency. But feel like it will be a tight squeeze to sort something out after match.

I'm footloose and fancy free!

A ton of people at my school matching into DO EM spots. I interviewed at a few but skipped it for the allopathic match (mostly for geographical reasons). I'm super pumped for them, but I have some serious match envy.

I was thinking of bringing tee shirts from the cities I was ranking highly, then I can put one over my shirt and tie, NFL draft style once I match. Thoughts?

I'm thinking more along the lines of multiple hats and then wear the one that you match too. NCAA football recruiting style.

Ahhhh.... I remember not so long ago when I was excited too to find out where I was going to train.

The big party between Match Day and July 1.

The honeymoon July 1-July 31, and then...

WHAMMO! You're just like every other resident in that hospital working so much for so little. Your attendings are cool enough but you find yourself watching the patient transporters idly pushing the beds or the janitor cleaning that same spot on the floor that he was cleaning yesterday and you wish, if only that could be you.

Oh well... enjoy it while it lasts.

Anyone else suddenly having second thoughts about their ROL?

Ha. Everyday. At first when I put it up, I didn't think I'd touch it. I've since changed it like 5 times. I'm waiting till they're locked just so I know it's all in the Match God's hands.

You know that the "Match God" is a drunk monkey with a dartboard, right?

Can't wait to get home and eat that monkey.

So true.

I would consider the hats thing except for the high cost, so I may do one (blank, white) hat and just draw a logo on while I wait my turn to announce.

finally stopped playing around with my ROL, certified and it feels oh so good. it's great to have it out of my hands. let the binge drinking commence...err continue

We haven't had many recent submissions. If you're really paranoid, you can PM me your thoughts and I'll post them without your screen name (though, it won't matter after tomorrow).

And if you haven't already, participate in the SDN EM Match Survey! I am still looking for more replies.

Anyone else terrified that they somehow messed up their ROL? Like accidentally clicked the button for neurosurgery rather than EM or something crazy? I know i'm being nuts, but it would be easy to hit that "delate all programs" link and just not match.

I really don't like trusting the computer this much.

Totally! I must have checked the list a million times. Of course, after each check, I feel I might have messed up something this time round and have to check it again.

Exactly! 🙁 😱

As long as it says CERTIFIED we're good, right?!
