RVU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is a typical day like at RVU? What time do classes start and end? Also, where can find the current class schedules?
Thanks!

After I read the student hand book and the interview feedback, I am not sure if I still have any questions to ask. Those of you who have interviewed at RVU, did you ask a lot of questions?

Not to "get your goat" but in most interview scenarios (regardless of what it is you are interviewing for) a candidate that does not have any questions for their interviewer will more than often appear uninterested or simply under prepared. Ultimately: have questions for the interviewer. If you can not come-up with any...you need to start TRUELY thinking about what it is you are getting yourself into.

Just my 2 cents...🙂

I disagree to some extent with the above poster. Some of the interviews I have been on have been extensive. By the time you do some of your own online research, check interview feedback, go through the finanacial aid presentation, etc - it's hard to come up with an intelligent question that you don't already know the answer to. Of course, I asked questions during my interview as things came up.

I did ask a couple of questions at RVU, specifically about rotations since it is so new and the answer I got was a disturbing..."I don't know".

When asked at other schools if I had any questions, I answered honestly. "Not really, I think we have covered alot. I would like to take a minute and reitirate that I have enjoyed my day here and am really interested in School X because..."

No dumb questions while simultaneously expressing interest.

anyone that interviewed on October 21st hear yet from RVU?

Hey I think I interview with you SJonathan. I got the call yesterday too! Are you planning on accepting?

When I interviewed last year I asked the staff interviewing why they chose Rocky Vista as it is a new school. They seemed to be in shock at first but were delighted to answer the question and it showed that there was more to it than the numbers for me. I think anything along those lines are good questions for any school paticularly a new one. Ask what is there favorite thing or who they like to listen to lectures from.

Just a side note here is an article in a local pub about RVUCOM

Thanks, libo1369! That was very bold of you!👍

I just got a call from RVU inviting for the interview! (i was way late to apply and was reaaaally nervous!). I've gotten an idea that the interview is low key and nothing to worry about, however, could anyone tell me more about their interview experience? What did the interviewers want to know? Was there some specific area they were interested in? Also, since the whole thing lasts 5 hours...what do you get to do besides the interview? Thank you! =)

I got an interview request! So, I'll be flying out to Denver in December!

At least it will be pretty. 😳

The interview itself is very conversational, but you should still prepare as you would any other interview. Be able to answer the staple questions - why this school? why DO?, etc. I was asked a couple questions that were based directly from my LOR's, so try to think what people may have written about you. I've also spoke with a person who asked questions about current healthcare problems, etc. Mainly they just want to get to know you, and why you want to come to RVU. Obviously their goal is to train physicians who are going to stay in the region and hopefully in a primary care type setting (although they fully acknowledge that a great number of students will go on to practice in all specialities).

The interview day itself does involve a lot of downtime. Numerous students and faculty drop by to see if you have any questions. You get to tour the campus - which is beautiful. This interview is very low stress. If you are really excited about the possibility of going to RVU, make sure and convey this during your interview. And remember, make sure and ask the interviewers questions. Try to get an idea of why they (the interviewers) love RVU. Hearing their responses is one of the things that has made this one of my top choices!

Also, if you haven't been to the Denver Area before, I would take some time to see the area (an extra day would be great). The school itself is on the very southern edge of the metro area, so you can't really get a good feel for denver. But a 20-30 minute drive brings you to downtown denver where there are countless fantastic restaurants and things to do. During my interview one person asked me where the mountains were - and its true, you can't see them from the campus, but a 20 minute drive from the campus will get you into the mountains. And Ski season is under way!

Thanks so much for your answer! I just moved to Denver and I absolutely love it! and the school is fantastic, defintely my first choice and i will make sure to show that! 🙂 Thanks!

I was just wondering if anyone has made a facebook group for the class of 2013 yet??

Did you guys write thank you letters after the interview?

does anyone know if there was waitlist movement last year? also, what are some of the best ways to get off that dreadful waitlist? hope to hear from anyone!

I know of at least 3 people who came in off of the waitlist. I'm sure there were more, but it's at least a sign that the thing moves.

I'm expecting a call on Monday too! I can hardly stand the waiting...I waited all day yesterday for a call too.

Good luck to both of the above posters! What day did you interview?

I am supposed to find out today too! have never been so nervous... !

have you heard anything yet?

No, good grief. Kerri told us "I'm not even going to cover what ifs because I've read the interview comments and you all did spectacular." Maybe she says that to every group, I don't know. So, she didn't say anything about how we would be notified if not accepted or waitlisted. She just said, "You'll all know Monday." She told us the admissions committee was meeting Friday. So, no email, must be good news? Did she tell you guys how you would be notified if not accepted? I can't imagine they call people they don't accept...I guess there are a lot of explanations, and still time left in the day. She did say that she needed to review all the decisions with Dean Martin before making calls...ugh, I'm getting sick to my stomach.

She told my group the same thing..that we'll get a call on Monday. Well let's keep our fingers crossed! Did you talk to Kerri today? I'm itching to email her!

Hey guys-

I interviewed last Wednesday, 11/12 and was told I'd get a call today too. So far.. nothing! What's going on here?!?! 😱

try not to stress too much, if I remember correctly the call came at like 4:50pm Denver time. I was a mess all day waiting for that call. Every time my phone rang my heart stopped.

Excellent, thanks AirLife. I'll stave off stressing for another 53 minutes, if I can 😉
