I have a 3.5 in my first 3 years of undergrad (i'm a senior right now) and I took the MCAT once and got a 28Q (BS 10, P 9, V 9). As far as ec's I am in a pre-med honors fraternity, a social sorority, and served on student government. I shadowed a DO for a week. Worked as an EMT-B for a summer, and did a lot of work with children as camp counselor during high school and college.

(P.S. I wish that could have been my application right there...so much simpler than the AACOMAS that I spent hours working on!)

Our main one is 'Clinically Oriented Anatomy' by Moore and Dalley, 5th edition. Turns out the 6th edition was just released. Not sure which one they'll require, but I'd bet the new one.

The chair of the anatomy dept (who teaches most of the class, with the exception of abdomen/thorax) gives you his notes in book form. He won't ask you a thing that isn't in his notes. I didn't use the text much, but it's pretty nice to help clarify some problem areas.

They don't require a specific atlas, but they want you to have one. You'll use that thing plenty. One of the clubs gives you a Netter if you sign up with them, and it ends up being a darn good deal. Just wait for school to start to hear about that deal.

Alright, I've got a little loan status update. The school has started working on a plan to finance students itself, until federal loans are available in 2012.

This plan isn't 100% in place yet, as it apparently takes some time to finance millions in student loans. They're shooting to finance us very similarly to a Grad Plus loan. The highlights are that it will be about an 8.5% rate (give or take a little), there will be a small origination fee, your credit score needs to be around a minimum of 680 (give or take), you will be able to take out the full cost of attendance amount, as long as you demonstrate need, and they're looking at a roughly 20 year pay back time line, with deferments through school and PGY-1 if needed, and a prorated payback amount in the rest of residency, so that full payments won't be expected until after residency.

That's about all the detail we got. I doubt I can answer many questions on it, because it was literally a 10 minute announcement between classes. But as soon as they have more things finalized, they'll let us know.

Bottom line, no need to worry about loans, still. They've got us covered. We'll be getting roughly the same terms that most other students get from Title IV. Personally, I'm stoked to see them act so quickly and in such a helpful way. Couldn't have asked for much more.

RVU is towards the top of my list. It doesn't really matter to me if I start this coming fall or the fall afterwards...kind of prefer the latter so I can save some money to pay for a new snowboard and other toys for Colorado... =D

It means that when you start paying back in your second year of residency, you will not have to pay as much as you will when you're done with residency... then the monthly payment amount goes up gradually until after residency (when you're making real money) when you will be making full payments.

That might be one of the least coherent paragraphs I've ever written. Let's try an example.

Monthly loan payback bill:
4th year med student - $0
PGY-1 - (may be able to defer for this year, but let's pick a number) $100
PGY-2 - $300
PGY-3 - $400
Attending - $600

These numbers are very arbitrary, but do ya get the point?

I am turnign down a more established school -University of Utah - for RVU. Yes, there is a lot of controversy abou the school but I love it and truly believe it will be an amazing school! Good luck with decisions🙂

Please, please, please lets stop the lies. The reason to why an ABSOLUT vast majority of us that applied to D.O. schools is because we could not get in to an allopathic medical school. After have being on several interviews at different D.O. schools I can with confident say that there is no difference between them. The difference between RVU and other D.O. schools is that RVU is for profit. This is coming from a future D.O.

What kind of lies are you reffering to mutantx??? Are you saying that people are not applying to DO schools because they want to be DOs??

I dont think it matters to what school a person goes to (as long as they choose what think is best for them), it can be DO, MD, established or new...it's all about what YOU make out of it. If you are a dumb person who is just good at taking tests...you will be a bad physician, MD or DO. And other way around.
So what lies?
I love the idea of being a DO! I think it's so much more personal and the whole philosophy is much closer to what medicine is supposed to be like. It is a personal choice, however, for the future physician to apply this in their day to day work... I truly hope that all those who go to RVU will become DO's because they want to, not because they could not make it anywhere else.

So mutantx, is this bitterness because you did not want to go to a DO school yet did not have aa choice??? sad.

DrCrusat, i just loved the atmosphere at RVU so much more than at the U of U. I know it's a silly reason to choose one over another. U of U has been my dream school forever, i finished my undergrad there. However, RVU seemed so much more student friendly and faculty actually cared about each person! U of U has great professors but the administration and the way school is run is not the best... And when it comes to it, I decided i'd reather be in the place where friendly, go-help attitude is lived by, not just theoretically taught in classes. At first i was worried by that fact that it is a private school but after seeing how they work at accomodating students and changing school only for the better all the time, i think it's an advantage🙂

I like the fact that mutantx spelled "absolute" like the vodka. It certainly adds flavor to his argument.

The reason that I chose RVU was for location. It's a new school, and if I could have gotten into CUHS, I might have gone there. If I could have gotten into the WWAMI program up in Laramie, I would have gone there. I wanted to study and practice medicine somewhere in the Rocky Mountain states. But, my chances were slim for many of the public MD schools in the region because I'm out of state. So, I applied to private schools, or schools with less in-state bias. It just so happens that DO schools happened to be on that list.

I could have gone to a number of schools in NY or the Midwest, but that's not where I want to end up.

And that's the truth.

wow. that's all i gotta say. WOW. Not trying to be rude here...but you seem to be the kind of person I try my best to stay away from. I truly hope you get rid of your anger, stereotyping and plain rudeness before you start medical school and, especially, before you start PRACTICING medicine. Before accusing me of being a lier and thinking everyone here is stupid...perhaps you should have reevaluated your goals and made sure that this is your calling. We have all of your regular academic clubs; family practice, peds, Ob/GYN, surgery, ER, military, Christian, Jew, government, osteopathic medicine, sports medicine, internal medicine and I'm sure others that I'm forgeting. There are softball, basketball, flag football and indoor soccer teams. We have particpated in Parkers Fitness challenge, where we won the team title, beat CU at their annual 5K run, and took the Parker winter basketball championship. Not to mention Rockies, Nuggets and Avalanche games, hanging out in downtown Denver and Parker, the mountains, hiking, biking, winter sports, holiday parties and theme house parties.
Needless to say, there are plently of activities to keep you fit and mentally clear. We are a competative group and love to represent our school!

I think the new season of AACOMAS starts sometime in may, so I would assume he/she is talking about entry for 2010.

As for the question - I don't remember anything on the secondary.

As for the secondary, I think it was a lot of the usual questions like 'Why DO', 'Why RVUCOM', and restating some of the stuff from your secondary.

Secondaries are a huge waste of time, but they are something you have to do. Luckily they are all essentially the same thing. Once you do your first one you can pretty much re-arrange some words, switch the state and bam you have another secondary done. As long as you are a good bs'er you will be fine.

I am definetely not trying to put down MDs here...sorry for misunderstanding🙂
Yup, 300K is kinda scary..but well worth it if that's what a person really wants to do.
Finally, I shadowed an orthopedic surgeon, DO, and that was one of the experiences that opened my eyes to the whole osteopathic medicine! You'd think being a person who works with a drill on a patient would be as far from "personal" as it can get and yet I have never ever seen a physician interact with her patients this way! She made sure she spent enough time with every single person she was going to operate and answered all the questions they had..and literally was the kind of doc you'd want when you are in a critical condition. I have shadowed 7 physicians overall, from all different areas, all MDs except for this one... Now, I am not saying that this person was so great because she graduated from the DO school, she is a compassionate, wonderful doctor, who I definetely look up to and yet she herself told me that DO schools do teach students to think differently and have an attitude towards patients that IS more friendly... I am solely talking from my experiences and stating my opinion. Don't forget that, all the angry people! 😉

...and I thought all the anger and competiteveness would go down once pre meds get accepted to schools and are on the way to do what they have been working for! But now I am a little scared of all the sharks that are entering med school! Poor patients watch out! angry docs in training are coming! geeeeeeeesh

Is the application for next year already available? It takes a while to get the secondary...aacomas like to take their time verifying everything. I think mine took about a month or 5 weeks. But you can think of what to write in your secondary in the meantime..🙂 You are definetely ahead of the game! Good luck!🙂

Yeah, I'm hoping that by having my primary in the first week of the application it won't take as long to verify. I'm hoping for 2-3 weeks, but that might not be realistic. When did you submit the primary?

my application was much later than others' so dont take it as a good example... i applied in september and it took a long time for them to verify it for some reason. However, RVU'ians are pretty quick with sending the secondary and all🙂 you still have plenty of time, but they do have "rolling admissions" so good job on starting early.

I didn't submit my primary until late november and it probably took at least 6 six weeks to verify. Once it is verified (If there is a way to check, I don't know it) you start getting e-mails from all the schools with their secondaries.

I didn't finish the secondary for RVU until Feb 19th, was invited the next day for an interview one week later and was accepted the following monday. So it was 10 days start to finish for me, though I can't speak for anyone else.

There were well over 3000 primary applications for the class of 2013...there were about 300 interviews or so granted and we have a full class already. I would say it is competative.
