This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations to everyone! Glad to see successful non-trads, too.

Definitely read that as "FIGHT club" and was kinda confused
As did I. My thought was, "kinda scary, kinda epic. Wonder if it had any influence on his interviewers..."

I have a B.S. in Zoology and am going to complete a B.S. in Microbiology soon. I showed an improvement in grades but most of the OOS schools didn't get to see that. I worked pretty hard on my PS and I think it was really good this time. I also made sure my eLORs were stellar. With 175+ credit hours, my GPA wasn't going to budge, so I tried my best to prove myself in other ways. I think if I had to apply again, I would have had better luck OOS with my last 45 grades being better - I'm taking lots of upper dision science courses and doing really well. :)

Yay! So, hang in there guys!

It makes me soooo happy that TT was able to share her stats. She was waiting until she got in :)

I'm not really sure why I was dragging my feet posting here... I guess because it makes me feel less anonymous. But then, I'm probably pretty easy to identify anyway!

And because people may be curious:
Round 1 - I applied with the bare minimum of courses, and very limited veterinary experience (plenty of animal experience though). I was told at the file review that they wanted to see more veterinary experience and more recent, upper division biology courses. I should mention that almost all of my pre-reqs were more than 10 years old at the time.
Round 2 - Between rounds I took I believe 3 or 4 additional courses, and significantly upped my vet hours, although they were still low compared to other applicants. At the file review that year I was told that they were happy with my additional coursework and that it was not necessary to keep taking more courses. I should focus my efforts on getting more experience, as that was (in the view of the reviewer) the only thing that kept me out that year.
Round 3 - At times during the year between rounds it felt like I was ruining my life by spending every available minute gaining experience (while working full time not in the field), I met and exceeded the suggested goal of 1000 hours. Still low, but it was the best I could do. I also spread my seeds much farther and applied to numerous schools (see above!). Third time was the charm!

My suggestion to re-applicants is to do a file review, and do what they say! I pretty much followed their advice to a T and it worked. Your experience may differ, but that is my suggestion! I guess I was also lucky in that the things that needed to change on my application were very "fixable." I do feel that it was probably a mistake to apply the first time I did, but it did give me the chance for a detailed file review so maybe it wasn't such a bad thing!

agreed. first time applying, my application simply was not competitive, and my personal statement was just plain bad. arrange a meeting with the admissions staff, and take notes. Do everything they suggest, varied experiences, take classes to boost GPA (will likely not influence overall, but last 45 and science), re-take GRE, and get that VMCAS in at least 1 month ahead of the final date. congrats to all those accepted posters here, best of luck to those looking for info on improving next years' app.

I was totally convinced that I wasn't going to be accepted to vet school this year. I had it all planned out to have to apply again. Now that I have been accepted to multiple programs and actually have to make a decision I'm shocked! I really thought that my GPA was too low to make it in and that's why I started taking some grad classes to look a bit fancier.

I applied to a ridiculous amount of schools which looking back was a bit of overkill. I based the schools I applied to off of how many out of state students they accepted (though apparently I screwed up with some of the schools on that one too!). I definitely should have done more research into how they choose their interviewees/acceptances but no need to look back now since I'll be going to vet school in the fall! I've been asked by some people from my undergrad with a similar GPA what my advice to them is for the next application cycle and it is to apply to as many schools as you can. Even though you sound ridiculous saying "I applied to 15 schools" when you get in it's not too ridiculous anymore!

Seriously! Ugh. Iowa and Mississippi have terrible ways of calculating the science GPAs. If only chemistry, physics/math, and genetics count, why then are we taking ALL THESE OTHER COURSES? Blarg.

Whatever man! Just beware, future applicants, that sub-par chem grades will haunt you especially much at these schools. :)

When I first saw my Iowa science GPA online I was ready to call them and be like, you definitely made a mistake. My GPA can't be that low! But then I read other people complaining on SDN and was like crap...definitely getting rejected from that one. Oh well!

Whoa whoa whoa, "leaning towards UF????"

Tom! Stop stalking me on every thread I mention UF on!!! :p

But yes...it looks like I'll most likely be staying in Florida. I just found out today that UF will transfer the public health credits that I've already taken while Minnesota won't so that might just be the last thing to seal the deal.

Though how much I loved Minnesota keeps coming back to mind...

I'm surpised they Minn won't transfer the credits? Aren't they big on PH? I did a program last year focusing on PH and they were aaaall about it. Now that I'm thinking about it: transfer them how? So you can complete your MPH at the school where you'll be getting your DVM?

I've already taken my core Public Health classes through another university (which is also accredited). But Minnesota will only take 12 transfer credits. Those credits either have to be from the DVM program or they could be some of my core classes. I'd rather have some upper level classes from the DVM program transfer which means I'd have to retake the core classes which I just took last semester and this semester. UF will transfer 12 credits from the DVM program AND they'll probably take my 15 credits of core public health classes. Which means I will have a lot less classes to take.

I am one of those people who had to recover from a low GPA during my first round of college. It took what feels like forever but I was able to bring my cumulative GPA from a 2.8 up to a 3.2 despite having a ton of credits so it is definitely doable. After being rejected without interviews last year, I made sure I had a ton of people review my personal statement this year, selected evaluators that really knew me and got more diverse experience. Every applicant is different, just like every school is different so the best advice I can give is to research each school's evaluation procedures and apply to those that give more emphasis on what your strengths are.

If these stats don't give someone hope, I don't know what will. Honestly, of the three years I applied, this is the first year I received interviews and I got in! I worked so hard to make this happen and I still can't believe it. You never know.

Okay, I'll play even though my vet experiences are frankly embarrassing. Maybe this will help all the 2016 peeps.

Yeah, I'm still not sure how I got in the first time around. I was all set to come back next year with a thousand more hours. The interviewers did say my eLOR's were good, so my evaluators are definitely getting some very nice Christmas cards this year. UPenn likes to have 2 academic evaluators while a lot of others want 2 vets, so it's safer to include both.

THANKS!
This has been one of those situations in life that has taught me that things usually work out the way they do for a reason and in their own time. Had I gotten in when I 'wanted' to...or even last year for that matter....I wouldn't have been here for my family through a rough time this past year:)

Umm first of all, I've never mentioned that 'other' school you're considering.. Secondly, I'm only being a voice of reason coz sometimes it's hard to see the 'way' when you are constantly bombarded by all of that UV radiation and hurricanes... But,,,, I will no longer 'stalk' ya,,,,carry on Ms. Chinola! :p

To give some hope to those with a low GPA....

So I really slacked off in undergrad :( although I don't think I would trade my experiences for anything anyway. I was SO upset when I didnt get in the first two tries, but looking back I am thankful. It has allowed me to refocus and it has showed me how much I miss being in school and learning. I am ready to buckle down now. Plus, although I didn't get as many constant hours with a VET as I should have, I have gotten some amazing experiences and learned so much working on the ranch. Anyway I know when I was applying these "successful applicants" threads were super helpful, so I hope this helps someone! :)

Some other notes about my application:

During my Junior year my GPA was an average of 2.80. It's possible to turn your GPA around after one bad year if you try. Make sure you can talk about it though, because there's a good chance it will come up in an interview.

Also, don't be put out if you can't get LoRs from the vets you worked with. Both of the vets I shadowed at the large animal clinic refused to write a letter for me when I asked them. This was a serious setback for me because my main interest is production animal medicine. I won't go into the reasons why they wouldn't write for me, but this is what I learned from it: Nobody knows you better than yourself. If somebody you meet along the way thinks you are not of the caliber to pursue a career as a veterinarian, know that it's only their opinion. Thank them for it then move on. You know what you're capable of achieving so go out and prove them all wrong.

Recommendations for future applicants:

Read this book. It's written by a former Cornell University CVM director of admissions. It gives you the perspective of the admissions committee which, in my opinion, was invaluable when I applied.
http://www.amazon.com/Get-Into-Vete...4899/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299705652&sr=8-1
Google Books has a preview of a few of the chapters too, if you're deciding if it's worth it. Don't buy it though; get it from a library if you can.

Get large animal experience, even if it's not what your main interest is in.

Undergrad is a great opportunity to get research experience. Ideally in a veterinary related field, but anything biomedical is helpful. It doesn't have to be a serious commitment and even just a few hours a week will give you a new perspective and make you a stronger applicant.

I'm willing to talk about my application too. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I had serious doubts I would get into vet school this year, but I was accepted to more schools than not! So don't count yourself out yet!

I had a rotten primary undergrad career, dropped out before graduating, then went to a different school to finally earn my degree. I gave details in the disadvantaged circumstances portion of VMCAS because I had legit reasons why I was a mess in my early college years. The grades in my post bacc courses together with my GRE score I’m sure helped the schools overlook the crappy early grades. I also took some extra post bacc classes that I figured would be relevant to medicine: Human A & P, Genetics, Domestic Animal Anatomy, upper level Physiology (human), Domestic Animal Dissection (graduate level class), Endocrinology, Histology. I earned A’s in all. I left out a ton of stuff on the VMCAS in pretty much every category (as I'm sure a lot of the over 35 crowd does) because I was too lazy to be that accurate, and I felt the schools would have enough info about me with what I included.

Here's some hope for those of you, like me, with less than stellar stats:

While I hope that my truly pathetic GPA can give someone hope out there, I think it's important to realize that the changes I made in my life to bring my GPA up were lifestyle changes. It wasn't easy and it wasn't fun, but in the end I'm going to vet school and I couldn't ask for more :)

Pure gold.

I have a lot of (typically younger) friends still doing pre-requisites. I'm always amazed at how many of them talk about pulling their grades up (it's always "next semester") but have no real plan in place for how to do it or what lifestyle changes they will have to make.

Congrats, Redhead!!!

This is for everyone who doesn't have amazing stats! I honestly never expected to get in this year but I'm so glad I did!

GPA: 3.82
Last 45: same
Science GPA: 3.8

GRE: 1240 (680Q, 560V, 4.0W)

Are you talking about your GPA and GRE score when you refer to less than amazing stats?

I saw that too.

Did they add some extra numbers?

I guess 3.8 would be mediocre on a 6 pt. scale.
