Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got rejected from one today, oh well. At least I had a complete application this time. Do you guys ever contact administrators for feedback about rejection? I've had friends do things like this for research internships in the past and get pretty good info, but I'm not sure if this is something that generally happens.

I've contacted a few. Usually they're nice about offering feedback but it sometimes takes a while because they're busy setting the program up. It can't hurt though, and it's definitely helpful for applying to other programs in the future (for med/grad school too)

I heard back from the Columbia SR-EIP (Leadership Alliance) on the 28th of February.
Does anyone know if the Harvard Leadership Alliance is a silent rejection, or will they send an email?

Thanks! 🙂

Do you mind sharing your stats? And do you know if Columbia will send rejection emails?

Also, by hearing back do you mean acceptance?

Sent from my SM-J727T using SDN mobile

What do you mean by stats?

And yes, I mean acceptance. I don't know about rejection emails - this is my first time applying for a summer internship. 🙂

Just got my rejection from harvard amgen and I don't know what to do now. I still have plenty of schools to hear back from but my confidence is pretty shook. I came into it confident because I have good stats for being a sophomore. What do you guys suggest I do if I don't get into any programs?
So some people already talked about this; I figured I'd throw in my two cents (even though I really should be studying for my mol bio exam lol).

You can PM me for more details but I know exactly how you're feeling since I went through the same thing last year. Here's what I would do in the following order:
1. As you said so yourself, you're still waiting to hear from plenty other programs. You really only need to get into one; obviously, more is better but point still stands. I think you have to remember that Amgen is an incredibly competitive program (some sites have an acceptance rate less than 2%. I actually suspect that figure decreased since Joachim Frank won the Nobel Prize.) and also remember that these programs tend to favor selecting juniors over sophomores since it's their last chance to do a summer program for many of them. Just hope for the best and prepare for the worst, which leads to...
2a. Ask yourself at this point: do I really want to work outside my home institution this summer? I think you need to ask yourself that serious question. If the answer is yes, then start looking around for a few more programs to apply to. Some deadlines haven't passed yet.
2b. Alternatively, even if you get rejected from the program itself, it's still possible to work in a lab at that university. I got rejected from Columbia Amgen but the PI there I was in contact with was still willing to take me in and provide a stipend (the only thing I would have to do was pay for commuting costs). I think quite frankly, there's this general emphasis I don't agree with on focusing on the program title more than the actual program experience, which you could honestly get outside of the program itself.
3. If the answer to the question above is no, or you're unsure, just know that it's not the end of the world if you don't do a competitive summer program outside your institution. I think your question betrays you as having the wrong outlook. Yes, it's nice to do these summer programs, but that doesn't mean the inverse is true: that it's wrong to not do a program. There really IS NOT ANYTHING WRONG with working in your lab at your home institution. In my case, I ended up doing research in my lab, got some solid results, and am now in line to get a publication and stronger letter of recommendation out of it. And I genuinely believe that having that summer continuation of a long term commitment to a lab made my application stronger for this cycle.
4. I understand your disappointment, but, speaking from experience, you're doing yourself a disservice if you hang onto it. IF you really do get rejected from everywhere, just log off SDN for a few days/weeks/etc. Listen to music, read a book, do what you like. It really can get depressing and soul-sucking reading about what seems like everyone getting into places while you're still stuck wondering what happened. But again, just know that your summer can be just as productive and enriching, if not more so, as long as you choose to make it so. I'll give this anecdote from one of my lab alums who went to work at the NIH through its program. The lab alum ended up hating the experience since the PI essentially treated that person as a lab tech (well, slave is more accurate). The person didn't end up doing too much substantive work but hey, that person gets to put down working at the NIH on a resume right? I only can speculate what the person wrote on future applications explicitly asking what was done at the NIH and how that person helped advance the project.

So, good luck with the rest of this cycle and I hope I hear good news from you on this forum!

4. As has been floated out there, see if you can get feedback on your application, whether accepted or not. It really is a valuable insight.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate this reply. Keeping my head up and will do my best to take your advice. Thanks again 🙂

Hey can someone pls talk about in the event that we don’t get accepted to the top 3 choices for leadership alliance ... will they ACTUALLY send our application to other schools? I don’t know if it’s true lol

Was Columbia your top choice? Because I spoke to people who. Have done leadership before who told me that the other two schools never got back to them, BUT their first choice accepted them. So if Columbia was your first choice then ya it’s possivle the other two just won’t reply. I’m dumb and put harvard as my top choice which I imagine is more competitive so I’m basically screwed

Columbia was my top choice, followed by Harvard and JHU. I have yet to hear from the other two.

Yes so according to the people I spoke to it is likely that you won’t hear from the other two. So far I spoke to two sreip alum, one who went to uchicago and one whowent to Columbia. They both told me the others never replied.

It’s obvious why this is. They probably prioritize the ones who chose them first. Like, for example, I chose Columbia as #2, you chose them as #1, so of course they’d take you because they know if I get into my #1, I’ll then them down.

This means they have access to seeing all of the places we apply to. I feel kind of cheated. They should have somewhat indicated that... because it’s kinda unfair. Or maybe I’m being a child lol I don’t know.

But congrats on Columbia! Hopefully you’ll get responses by the other two, but I’m glad you got your first choice.

And RE Harvard — I emailed them. They told me mid March/early April. But then again so did Columbia so ‍♀️

Ok it won’t let me post the link because I’m a new member but search up “leadership alliance sreip acceptance rate” and a tandfonline link will pop up open the pdf.

“The Leadership Alliance SR-EIP participants are recruited from a national applicant pool of undergraduates from Alliance and non-Alliance member institutions. From 1993 to 2011, a total of 2,633 students participated in the SR-EIP. For the past 10 years, our average acceptance rate has been 18%.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the SR-EIP has hosted a diverse cohort of students from 1993 to 2011. Although the primary focus has been on URMs, Asian American and White students from various socioeconomic backgrounds also benefit. The racial composition of SR-EIP cohorts has shifted over time from an average of 80% African American between 1993 and 2000 to 53%”

The time discrepancies may be due to the first / second / third rounds of admission - Columbia is giving me until the 14th of February to decide on accepting / rejecting the offer, so I'm assuming Harvard probably has a similar process. That may be why the dates are strange. 🙂

Ah that makes sense. So if you reject, it opens up a space for someone else. Which is why they say mid March.. because that means the 2nd round people start getting notified. Thanks for that!

Anyone hear back from UChicago Leadership alliance?

Hey can someone pls talk about in the event that we don’t get accepted to the top 3 choices for leadership alliance ... will they ACTUALLY send our application to other schools? I don’t know if it’s true lol

Yes, they actually send your application to other schools---sometimes. The second time I applied, they sent me an email about how a Brown professor was interested in my application and asked if I was interested in having them look into it further. I declined the offer because I had already gotten into two other LA sites but they never updated the website. I don't know how common this is though, and I don't think it's something you can request.

Also, for those that applied to the LA, it is highly likely that only the school you chose as your top choice actually evaluated your app and there is no guarantee that there is crosstalk between program coordinators at different sites and whatnot. Silent rejections are also fairly common through the LA. A lot of the sites (i.e Johns Hopkins, UPenn) also have the option to apply to their program directly, so doing so is better than listing them not first on the LA application

Wow thank you so much! That helps a ton. 🙂

I wish I knew this information before I applied.

Don’t forget to use this thread as a resource too,a lot of us have been in the majority of these programs in past or have been accepted to them.We can give advice on how to choose between two programs and give tips.

Has anyone done St. Jude POE before? How was the experience?
Also, how competitive is this program in comparison to other summer programs like JHU SIP, Amgens, Baylor SMART,etc?

Has only 1 person heard back from CSHL yet? Did anyone contact them for approximate decision dates?

THIS SHOULD BE THE MOST UPDATED LIST (as of 8:48 EST, 3/2/18)...for acceptances. It was harder for me to track down rejections/interviews on my phone. I also alphabetized the acceptances so errors i.e. deletion of entries and repeats are less likely to happen again. If we want to revert back to chronological order, let me know and I'll do that, but it kinda started to degenerate lately anyways.

Honestly, we should adopt a spreadsheet. It's not that hard for someone to just accidentally C+P the wrong list if they miss a comment buried somewhere else.

Oh, and if i missed you, apologies. Feel free to add yourself on.
