Summer Research Application and Acceptance Thread ( SPUR, SURF, SURP, SIP, AMGEN, LA etc.) 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats! I know you were accepted to UCB as well. Which one are you going for? Shamelessly asking because I'm on UCB's pseudo waitlist lol.

I'm probably going to accept Caltech's offer tomorrow and turn down Berkeley. I hope y'all get an offer!

Has anyone heard anything from the Institute of Computational Medicine (ICM) at Hopkins? I applied through SIP & have heard back from my alternate choices, but not ICM. I tried emailing their program director but have not received a response. Also, anyone know if CSHL and Stanford SSRP do silent rejections?

Who is the program director for the program? I'm at Hopkins, doing the Comp Med minor. I'm meeting with my advisor soon, I can try and find out the status of the applications.

Has anyone heard back from Rutgers University Rise program?

Hi guys! I've seen people in this thread say that the Cincinnati (MSTP, Children's Center SURF, etc.) decisions historically come out in late march. Does anyone know if they all come out at once or if they have been coming out in a rolling admission fashion?

P.S. Hopefully no one is too triggered by this question, being that part of the purpose of this thread is to connect applicants for conversations... ;);)

Hey guys, just got off the phone with someone from UPenn SUIP. They have already made offers but she said it is rolling admissions and they received 1000+ applications so not all offers have been sent. They should be done reviewing them by next week. Sending hope to all of you who are waiting as well!

Hello, longtime lurker on this forum. I was accepted into the NIH NIDDK STEP-UP on 3/2/18 and the Stanford Canary CREST Program today, 3/19/18. I’m in a dilemma because I’ve already accepted the NIH NIDDK one because I wasn’t sure if I would have other options (also because it was a great program with $5000 stipend, no housing but they help find an internship near my home, an all expense paid travel opportunity to their symposium at Bethesda, and an earlier acceptance deadline). The CREST one is giving a $4000 stipend and an unexplicit amount for travel and housing. Also, I’m interested in the research project I got place in (whereas the NIH hasn’t matched us up with PIs yet). I’m not sure what to do from here because this is the first time that this has happened to me! I’ll also be a undergrad senior next year, so I don’t want to be burning bridges... if anyone can help me get insight on both, it’d be extremely appreciated!

Never been a fan of not knowing what lab id be in ahead of time. Luckily when I wasn’t given the name of PI he turned out to be amazing coupled with an amazing project . I would choose the project you know unless you foresee yourself at the other location in future. If your headed MD burning bridges won’t matter , they won’t remember when they have 14,000 applications

Longtime lurker here too - has anyone heard back from WUSTL Amgen/BioMedRAP? Their FAQ says decisions were supposed to be released on March 15th.

It depends on the site. When I applied, I received an invite from one school at the end of February. Most sites start making noise at the beginning of March though.

Has anyone heard from Weill Cornell Travelers Program?

Any psychology majors apply to the UAB SCAHIP program?

Even though I feel anxious waiting for responses from programs, I'm happy to have my tiramisu there to comfort me :')

Has anyone heard from Weill Cornell Travelers Program?
I had an interview with them on March 6th, but I haven't heard anything else yet.

UPDATE: I just received an acceptance email from the Weill Cornell Travelers Program

I haven’t heard back from any of the three Leadership alliance sites I applied to... (Harvard, Columbia, and UChicago in that order.) should I just accept defeat? Some people say they give answers in early april.

I don’t know if anyone here can relate or give any profound advice but I applied in anthropology for the three schools. Do you guys think that it’s probably a rare field and thus has less to no faculty available in summer to mentor candidates?

I’m really sad because I spent weeks on the personal statement and literally had 6 drafts till I perfected it.

I reached out to one Harvard anthro professor but he informed me he’s on sabbatical. He had no idea what SRE IP even is lol. (Harvard said this was allowed and encouraged me to find someone myself since they can’t find anyone for me.)

Do you guys suggest I reach out to more at the other two schools as Well?

Do you know if the other schools have a similar policy of allowing students to contact professors? I recommend emailing the programs if you can't find anything about it on the site-specific FAQs and whatnot, but line up some professors that you'd like to work with in the meantime.

Also, it's ok to feel a little sad, for now. You put in a lot of hard work on all aspects of your application, and that's really admirable! Think of it this way: applying to stuff and writing personal statements is going to follow you for the rest of your career as a student and as a professional. You've just made a huge step towards figuring out what kind of image or brand you want to create for yourself. It's like sharpening a tool: you know what you did right, what you're proud of, and what you can improve upon in that application. You've made it a whole lot easier for your future self, that's for sure.

So, take that nervous energy and start plotting and planning! If nothing comes out of emailing those professors at the other sites, try to see if you can get into some anthropology research or internships closer to home. Does your home institution have any professors who you could possibly work with? Also, are you planning on taking the GRE or any other major standardized tests? Depending on what year you're in, it might be a good idea to think about. Don't forget about summer classes and volunteering!

Does your home institution have any professors who you could possibly work with? Also, are you planning on taking the GRE or any other major standardized tests? Depending on what year you're in, it might be a good idea to think about. Don't forget about summer classes and volunteering!

Thank you soooo much. This helped a lot. :)

I think you’re right. I will email the other institutions to inquire whether it’s OK.

That’s really kind and true! I never would’ve seen it like that, I’d just have thought I was incompetent forever :p but indeed, personal statements have always been hard for me over any kind of writing, so I’m glad I put the effort in.

Unfortunately there is nothing else for anthropology. It’s such a small field with like no funding :( and I have a few back up programs for the summer but they’re all intensive language programs, none of them are research.

Yes I am taking my GREs April 14! And I graduate in December. SRE IP would be ideal because it would be right before my application cycle for grad schools so I’d get a lot of advice and honing. But I guess it’son my Fate. I think I’ll wait it out and then start making those dreadful calls to the institutions to ask what my status is...

Thanks so much again. :)

I got denied to both programs I applied for. What should I do now?

Yeah I did because I really didnt have time to write essays and all since I was studying for the MCAT
I understand
It depends where you want to do research.
There are still programs that have open deadlines.
You may check pathwaystoscience website, and other resources.

If nothing work out, then you can only do volunteer research if you email the institutions, and ask.

Maybe others have different ideas how to help you out.

Sound advice , pathways should have some more deadlines out there, I know the majority of students are looking for high powered internships, but don't ignore other disciplines such as plant biology or plant immunity they are good fields for research during the summer and usually have a smaller applicant pool. You'll still get research exposure just focusing on a different system. Usually working through immunity and microbiology

Just discovered this forum because I just made the decision to pursue MD /PhD..thanks to everyone that shared his/her experience/opinions.It really helps.
Was rejected by Harvard CRSP, haven't heard back from Upenn USSP or Rockefeleller SURF(big congrats to fellows that got accepted into these programs!!). Got accepted to Baylor in early March. I think I'll go. Although my home institution is pretty known for bio research, I want to gain a different perspective.
Any advice on how to make the best out of the summer program? Initially I had a fixed research interest and just wanted to get in one lab at Baylor. But now that I think about my career path more, I want to actually get to know the current situation of the patients, know the relevance of my research more as well as doing research in a relatively secluded lab. I'm even not sure if my current research interest is that clinically relevant, since I lack insights in that aspect, which is what I hope I will gain through the summer program. What do you guys suggest for picking a PI/mentor in a summer program?
Sorry about this long post. Just treat it as an entertainment!

Please accept my apologies in advance. I know this topic has already been discussed in here, but I am still not sure what to do. I am waiting for Columbia Amgen to contact me regarding my application decisions, if they ever actually plan to contact me! The website says that results would come out by the end of March. Do you think they even accept anyone this late or they are just not not caring much to send out the rejection letters? I have a feeling that all the 15 spots must have already been filled.
Does anyone have an idea about how many days you are given to reject or accept an offer? I want to see if it makes sense to wait any longer. I am quite patient and personally do not want to contact them, but I need to make decisions about summer and Fall semester, which all depend on this research opportunity.

I was just informed by Columbia Amgen that I was rejected, after I emailed them and called them last week.

I know this program isn't on the list, but has anyone heard from Baylor College of Medicine Michael E. DeBakey Summer Surgery Program?

I heard back from my Leadership Alliance site on March 8th!

Congrats! Which school? And did they email you or call you? Did they tell you which lab you were assigned to? Did they interview you before or did they just accept you?

Sorry for the laundry list of questions but I'm dying to know! LOL

Yaaaay join the MD/PhD party train!!! (Well, "party train" is an exaggeration but we've got enough solidarity and high hopes to share)

Congrats on Baylor! I'm not sure which specific program you got into or how they match you up with PIs. Point is, all kinds of research, from basic to translational to clinical itself can be directly relevant to the patient. But, from seeing that you want to "know the current situation of the patients", leaning towards translational and clinical research is a better option. In general, less PhDs do clinical research unless they're working in teams with MDs. I've felt bad before just judging based on PhD or MD status of a mentor but it can help you get an initial understanding of what kind of research they might be doing (don't let it be the end all be all though). See if any PIs who have both the MD and PhD are doing work that interests you (best case scenario).

Baylor's Institute for Clinical and Translational Research might be a good place to start. There are a couple pages on their official website that list their cores and groups, so you can check out the lists of investigators that match your fields of interest. Check out what these PIs are doing and see if they're working on things like clinical trials/drug development, preventive medicine, outcomes research, biomarker identification, or drug delivery.
Those are just a few ideas and key words (tip of the iceberg, really) that commonly show up in a lot of the research statements/synopses for a lot of these investigators. You can use them to sift through the lists of possible mentors to bring together the clinical significance and the continued lab setting that you want. Remember, funding and publication output are still semi-decent measures of how active/prolific a lab is, so do your research, pun fully intended. Snoop around and see if any of the PIs of the pool you can choose from have mentored MD/PhD students in the past or have them working in their lab currently.

Anyways this post has gotten a bit long and I might have restated a bunch of stuff you already know, but I hope there at least a few things in there that can help. Best of luck!

Thanks for sharing that, I really appreciate it! I only wish they had an understanding of how important it is for us to at least know that we are being rejected sooner than later:(

Hi. While your patience is admirable, and I wish I had that talent, I really really encourage you to call them. I haven’t heard back either and I’m going to wait it out till April 2nd because leadership alliance says early April on their application.

Honestly we feel intimidated to call and ask and feel like they’ll be annoyed but the truth is they are people just like us. They probably understand our situation. If anything just say something like “I’m very sorry for the inconvenience this may cause you.” When I say that people who are annoyed to begin with feel bad for me and are normal again lol.

I really recommend calling. You have nothing to lose by doing it.

When you guys write personal statements, do you keep it formal and just discuss your research background and interests, or do you actually make it personal? Like is it okay to for it to be more informal

Informal enough to not make it dry and not sound like the other hundreds of applications.

But define "more informal."

Just got a waitlist email for WUSTL Amgen.

Dear DBBS Summer Program Applicant,

We would like to thank you for your application to DBBS Summer Research Programs. Your application made an excellent impression on our review committee and you are a strong and acceptable candidate for our programs. However, due to slot limitations we are unable to make a firm offer of acceptance at this time. We are committed to full support of all summer students and are placing your application on hold to ensure that we will have ample positions available. In the interim, if you have decided to accept a summer offer at another institution, please let us know.

We appreciate very much your interest in Washington University and the Division of Biology & Biomedical Sciences

Ahh your reply is really heart-warming, many thanks and hugs! I'm already on it;) I think pediatrics will be one of the fields I will look into the most. And sorry about the confusion, the program is Baylor SMART. I didn't know there are multiple programs lol.
