I have been accepted to these two schools and now I'm really scratching my head as to which of these is better for me. I had a good experience at both schools. Temple has a gorgeous new facility (crappy neighborhood) but its really expensive. NYMC is more of a chill neighborhood but u have a chance to live in NYC in clinical years plus its cheaper. But the Touro merger has me really nervous. I'm from cali, so ultimately, I want a school that will give me the most competitive chance to obtain a Cali residency.

I would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I think my number one factor in choosing a med school has do deal with the % chance that im going to get shanked or shot during my 4 years there...with that conclusion i think id go nymc 😉

Baylor is merging with Rice...so I'm using that as an example of in this economy, NYMC really needs that merger. Otherwise our tuition is going to pay the price. A few points to mention:
1) Its not final, they've gotten this far before with other schools.
2) I agree, its not ideal given Touro's reputation but it will infuse the school with more money to improve facilities, get better instructors/equipment, more research?? What's the negative in that?
3) Our diplomas will still say NYMC. Period. We will be the last class, should the merger go through, to be unassociated in name with Touro.

I really wouldn't be so nervous about NYMC's potential merger. Plus, they have a longstanding history of matching Cali students back to good placements in CA but I'm sure you're aware of that if you look at their match list.

If you do a search on these two schools you'll get a better idea of their strengths and weaknesses. True Temple is in a shady area but no one is worried about their personal safety. Honestly, SDN makes you think people are dodging bullets on their way to class and that's just not true. The sentiment on here is not the reality. I'd especially be weary of people who visit once for 2 hours and suddenly think their opinion matters more than people who are on that campus 20+ hours a week. I honestly don't know much about NYMC but after looking over our match list, I can say that a lot of people matched in Cali. Ultimately, your ability to match back home is going to depend on how well you do in school period.

Based off of your initial post, it seems like you're leaning towards NYMC since you mentioned the school price, neighborhood, and city as pluses. The only plus you have for Temple is the new building....which really is not going to increase your ability to learn the material any better than if we were still going to be in the old crappy building. Perhaps you've already made your decision?

looking at the match list, it appears that temple has twice as many people matching into california residencies than nymc. pick temple.

also isn't it passsed may 15 why do you have 2 acceptances? did you get off of a waitlist?

I think you have it the other way around. NYMC tends to match to CA quite well as many Californians end up at NYMC. Around 40% or so of the class on average I believe.

Ya kdizzy I'd look again because I just quickly browsed over each match list and temple has 14 or so students matching in CA while NYMC has 20+...

I interviewed at both schools and I have to say I really preferred NYMC (hence why I'm going!). The curriculum is set up where you really are able to learn in a quiet environment and have the option of practicing in a huge city like NYC. You are able to choose where you go (you can even swap with other students!). With Temple and their site placements, I was really concerned about being placed in an area I didn't want, as Temple University Hospital is the most popular site and most people want it (read: super competitive). Additionally, I like the idea where, at NYMC, you can go to different places for different rotations (NYC for one, Westchester for another, CT if you want another change in pace).

The Touro merger is concerning, but it will not affect current students or the entering class of 2009 nearly as much as it may affect subsequent groups. The president issued a statement that it won't even be on our diplomas. In this economic environment, you really can't be too picky where you get your money from -- even med schools aren't exempt. I loved my experience at NYMC as an interviewee, their board scores are phenomenal and their match list equally impressive and there's even a running joke that it's called UC-Valhalla because of it's huge Cali population (I think it was almost a third of the class of 2012 if I remember correctly).

Temple was still a great place too -- the students seemed very happy and aside from the price tag, I have nothing bad to say. Bad area --> great trauma experience, right? 🙂 In the end, NYMC was my choice based on it's positives, but whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll be happy in the end.

Wow! this is exactly how I felt. At first, I was somewhat impressed by temple, and was really leaning that way. In fact, I had a really late interview at NYMC (May) and I was going to turn it down but something told me I should go.. and about ten days later I get accepted. I really enjoyed my experience at NYMC. I loved how its a quiet neighborhood that looks fairly safe, but you have a great city within arm's reach. Plus I stayed in white plains which was also pretty cool. Unless I hear back from any UC's, then I likely will be headed to NYMC.

BTW.. I have two acceptances because I was accepted at nymc after may 15th (no waitlist).

If you own a gun and want to observe (partake?) in urban combat go to Temple.

PS: I actually would take Temple over NYMC.

temple is more prestigious and is more honorable...hence the name...temple

I also hold two acceptances at these schools, and I have a week to decide my fate. I am really having trouble making this decision. I live and have always lived about a half hour from NYMC, while Temple would be a new place for me. Good or bad, it is something for me to think about. The Touro thing has me a bit worried because I feel like good professors would nto want to teach at a school with an undetermined future and crappy financial standing. Temple seemed very nice, new building and such. The biggest negative for me about Temple was that there is no living on campus or near the school. I would have to make at least a 15 minute commute each day to the school. What do you guys think? Where should I go?

I wouldn't worry so much about the Touro situation if you are entering this year because the president of NYMC stated that there would be a minimal year or two of transition where nothing would change. The students who are currently attending and those of us who applied to enter this year had no forewarning of the merger before it was brought onto the table so we will be affected the least -- as I said before, no Touro on the diploma for up to the entering 2009 class.

My decision to choose NYMC over Temple had to do with the faculty, who are dedicated more to teaching than their own research. NYMC isn't a huge research powerhouse (and while this causes the school to take a hit in the rankings of US News), it's almost a good thing because you know you're not dealing with a ton of egos who are more invested in their work rather than your education. All schools have crappy financial standing right now...that's why they're merging left and right and teaching positions aren't too easy to come by either -- I wouldn't worry about professors leaving over this. And even if they do, it definitely won't happen in our first 2 years as a student on the Valhalla campus. From the professor's point of view, Touro could only be a plus since it's a new source of income for the school and indirectly funding for them. More financial stability generally leads to more job security. This isn't something you'd hav to worry about at Temple since it's a public school, but the price tag and the question of where I would be placed in the later years is what turned me off. Both schools are great, but I wouldn't let the Touro situation deter you from entering this year. The entering class of 2010 will definitely have more to think about than we do.
