Wow Katydid628, that's all I can say. How are your other schools coming along??

Just checked my mail, no letter..... again. I e-mailed my dad to let him know my letter may be coming to their house, since it's listed as my permanent address. I asked him to forward it to me.. just incase it's one of those infamous rejection letters, hehe. 😛

I am still hopeful, though :xf:

Thanks, yeah it was definitely not the best experience ever lol. I have been accepted at UCD Dublin, Waitlisted at Auburn (with interview) and LSU (without interview), and rejected from CSU, VMRCVM, UF, and now UTK. All in all not a horrible cycle...I'm very grateful for what I've gotten, but the phone call just kind of aggravated me:/

No doubt! Congrats on your successes! I would love to go to UCD, for I am super irish *looks over to name* hehe :luck:

However, my mom is battling breast cancer, so last minute I decided to not apply overseas. My mom is a UT alumna, so it would be pretty cool if I got an invite 🙂

I have been looking for this thread forever. glad i finally found it. Extremely shocked yet happy to say that i got an interview invite for March 11 @ 11:30 am. yay!

Well thanks very much for your support, I'm so sorry that you won't be a classmate of mine but I think it's totally worth staying here cause I'm sure you are a great support system for your mom 🙂 I will definitely be rooting for you to get an invite!!!!!!!! (and a real one, not a "accidentally sent one" lol) Keep us posted!😀😀😀😀

So Deborah from admissions just called to let me know that they sent me an interview invite in the mail by mistake, and that they are sorry but that I should disregard that letter and consider myself rejected. Wow. That is an extra special kind of rejection.🙁🙁 Can't wait to see my fake interview invite!

Wow, that's uhh...harsh. I saw your post in the rejections thread and came here to see what it was all about. That is really not cool of them...

Yeah it was not a terribly fun phone call...I guess at least now I don't have to check my mailbox obsessively, as I certainly do not even want anything from Tennessee that comes in it!!...sigh...

Sounds like they are not especially well-versed in letting people down easily...

When I was visiting undergrad schools, my mom and I flew to UTK to see the campus and the vet school. I was really interested in the vet school and loved the campus so much that I thought I might go there for undergrad too. We met with the dean of the vet school and he happily talked to us for about 15 minutes until he found out where I was from. He kindly told me that I needed to find a new dream, because I would never get into vet school because I was a (insert name of small state with no vet school here) resident, as he showed my mother and I the door. :eyebrow: Needless to say, they didn't get a dime of my money.

My condolences to those of you who received nasty rejection letters. Keep your heads high because you will be sitting in your first vet school class at your dream school faster than you can imagine!

Sorry to hear that about the pseudo-acceptance letter Katydid!!! For just doing that to you, they should have at the very least offered you an interview. I feel your pain, though, since I was also rejected.

Shesh, PetDoc318. Thanks for sharing. Now I don't feel so bad 🙂 I just found out my parents opened up my UT letter YESTERDAY! Yup.. it was the "small, thin envelope". They told me it was pretty harsh.. I said, "Yah, I heard." I am just glad I still have an interview to look forward to 😀

Mmm, this pint of Americone Dream Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream sure takes the rejection sting away 🙂

My dad texted me and said "Received your letter from Tennessee. Your grades are too low"

Awesome. 👎

Aww I'm sorry that is not a pleasant text🙁 I'm soo excited for everyone who's gotten an interview, but I must say this has been a tough round!!! 🙁

:bullcrap: Hmm. That's mean 🙁 Thanks for sharing. 🙂 Too bad for UT.. They're missing out on some high-quality students/future doctors 😀

Good luck to all on their interviews 😍

Hey Guys!
Not sure if anyone will be able to help me out on this one, more of a logistics question: I am an OOSer, and will be flying into Knoxville for my interview (haven't had a lot of experience with air-travel and am a little nervous). I will need to check out of my hotel before my interview, what am I supposed to do with my luggage in the meantime? Thanks for any suggestions.

Just bring your bags with you to the interview. I'm sure they will be more than happy to store them for you in the office while you interview. I have heard of people doing this before

Just carry a small overnight bag and bring it with you. The airlines make it excessively difficult to bring much in the way of luggage these days anyway.

Sorry to hear you guys are having a hard time with UT! I agree that this thread is so strange to me, because usually all I hear is how much people love UT and the administration. I am a second year student and I assure you Dr. Brace as well as the rest of the faculty and staff are GREAT. I love it here and I really feel like I have a support system through the faculty and staff. I hate that they accidentally sent that letter to you katydid 🙁 that must have been frustrating. I will second the thought though that I'm sure it was excruciating for Deborah too as she is such a nice woman. Not that that makes it any easier on you of course, but I just want people to know that our administration is very caring despite that unfortunate mistake.

I'm not sure what to think about the comment about Dr. Brace telling someone that they wouldn't get in because of where they are from. All I can say is that's very hard to imagine him saying. We have lots of people from out of state small towns, and I've never heard anything but encouraging words from him.

I wonder if she talked to Dean Thompson? Its my understanding that he's been known to be a little less understanding than Dr. Brace when it comes to that.

Ah, good point I just assumed she was talking about Dr. Brace. I like Dr. Thompson too, but I haven't talked to him much so I didn't know that there was some issue around that.

Does anyone know how parking works on the UTK campus?

Parking for interviews or parking for students?

For interviews, when you come in the building they will likely give you a temporary parking pass and tell you to park in the commuter lot next to the UT Gardens.

As a student, you will pay each year something on the order of $160 or so for the privilege of looking for parking. If you get there by 8 am,you will always find parking, either in the aforementioned lot by the gardens or the commuter lot across from the library. But certain times of day, like between 11am and 1 pm, parking is very scarce. If you ever arrive and cannot find any parking, you park in the large animal receiving lot and get a temporary pass from the large animal reception desk.

In the summer, if you are doing research and want to be able to park, you have to buy a summer parking pass. It's dirt cheap, though. I think it cost me $16 last summer.

On game days, all hell breaks lose, because the lots are all taken over by the athletic department. A normal parking pass is not honored, and spaces are sold. However, I have always been able to show my badge to the attendant and tell them I am there to study and they let me park in the clinic lot.

Just wanted to let you all know my interview went well, NO STRESS! They only asked me about myself, none of the questions I was expecting, and the interviewers were SUPER nice😀 Hope this means they really liked me and I'm golden for acceptance!!:xf::xf: Good luck to the rest of you!

How long did the interview take, by chance?

Glad it was so stress free!

My interview is at 4:30 pm. Do y'all recommend going to the 8:45 am information session and then coming back later for my interview?

Gosh...i'm most nervous for this interview than any others that i've had. I've only been waitlisted/rejected at other schools so this is my last hope. It's my IS school too so if I mess this up, I will not be happy 🙁

My interview was at 1:30 on Monday and one of my interviewers came out and told me that they were running a few minutes behind. I went into the interview around 1:35 and came out aruond 2:05. I would say it is supposed to be anywhere from 20-30 minutes depending on how many questions you want to ask them at the end of everything.

I personally suggest going to the talk with Dean Brace at 8:45 unless you do not wish to tour the vet school or know how the admissions work. He talked to us for about thirty minutes before we split up into three groups to go on a pretty decently long tour. I definitely wanted to see what the school looked like because I'm not sure how to decide on a school without touring it.. but that's just my personal opinion. If you already know you like the UT Vet School and have been through it before then I guess it doesn't matter whether you go or not. I did think it was strange however that at the 8:45 talk on Monday there were only a few Tennessee residents.. many more OOSers it seemed.. Just my observation.

In general my interview also went really well! The three Dr.'s I talked to were all really really nice and I enjoyed it very much. Much more like a laid back conversation than anything else. Oh, and after your interview Dean Brace asks to speak with everyone one and one before you leave just to check base and meet people. Super nice though 🙂

Anyway.. good luck everyone the rest of the week! :luck:

Just wondering how everyone's interviews have gone so far? I feel like mine when really well this AM. And I'm very excited to see letters in a few weeks. :luck::luck::luck::xf::xf::xf:

Do we have to wear our suits to the tour? How long does the tour last? My mother seemed to have misplaced my interview letter that got sent to my permanent address... it starts at 8:45 am right? Was there anything else important in that letter other than your interview time?

Since you will be seen by the administration during the info session and the tour, this will be your chance to make a first impression. I would recommend wearing the suit. If you are a woman wearing heels, it would be perfectly acceptable to put on a pair of walking shoes, though.

I couldn't believe it yesterday, at least one guy was wearing jeans and tennis shoes, he did have a button down shirt, but still... A lot of women wore slacks and a blouse. When my small tour group met up with Dean Thompson he made sure to comment on how professional we all looked (3 women in suits), and some comment about how it really makes a good impression.

lol, yeah, I kept looking at people and trying to figure out if they were just family of interviewees, or if they were people planning on changing, or what.

Did you see the one man in the sweater, jeans, ballcap and sunglasses? I was STUNNED at first because I thought he was an applicant, then figured out he was a dad.

I was really suprised that people brought their parents. Maybe it's because I've always been so independent, but even if one of my parents drove me to the interview they never would have come in with me unless I asked them to, and I never would have because, really, when you are at the point of interviewing for a grad school position you are starting your adult life. No offense to anyone that brought a parent, just my thoughts.

When I went to the Dean's talk (yes it is at 8:45..) I wore a nice pair of dress pants and a modest blouse with a pea coat. People wore all sorts of things. If you have time to change into your suit, I don't see why you would make yourself uncomfortable for the hour long tour. Plus, the floors in the large animal hospital were wet and the pants I was wearing got soaked on the bottom, so I am glad I was not in my suit at the time. They technically may not even know who you are until you put your nametag on right before your interview.. so really no true first impression until they can put your name with your face and at that time, you will be in your suit (more than likely).

I also took my mom with me for the talk with Dean Brace just so she could give me an opinion on how she felt the school compared to the other school I am considering. Although she may not be attending the school or be a factor in my ultimate decision, I value her opinion and sometimes appreciate the help in being able to talk about comparisons with her since she has been there to see the facilities and hear what the curriculum/four years will be like. Sometimes it is just nice to get an alternate view. Don't hesitate to bring your parents.. especially those that may be footing the bill and want to see what they are signing up to pay for. Plus you will not be the only one. More people had at least one parent there than not. Just my opinion.

Good luck to everyone with interviews today! I really enjoyed the school and the tour. Rocky top is beautiful! Well, back on the airplane...

One of the out of country vet schools called me and told me I had been accepted. Of course they give you two weeks to accept and want the nonrefundable $500. Would it be ok to email Tennessee next week and ask about my status? I hate to give up $500 due to uncertainty over UT admit or not if I can find out early. Did anyone currently at UT do this last year? Also, who do you email? :xf:

Cherry1234 - I didn't try to do what you did and it's been a few years, but your best bet would be to call Deborah Shepherd and explain your situation to her. She may be able to tell you if decisions have been made (which may or may not have happened yet since interviews were last week). Otherwise, my recollection is that they wanted people to wait for their letters.

figure it's time to bump this thread...

so how was everyone's impressions of Tennessee this past week?? 👍👎 ?

I really liked it. I would have loved to get to see more of it... I had to just go for the interview, but I am not that far away and might drive up there another day to get a tour and stuff, which would really help me I think. How did others like the facilities? They had the biggest classrooms I have seen yet in a vet school by far...

Also, their interview folder was so helpful! It had an apartment guide and all that stuff, which I think is really awesome to have. On the downside, I guess I have to take one more class... a cell biology course of some sort if I get in.

If you want a tour, I'm sure the office can help you. Also, if it's not during classes or clinics, I would be happy to give any SDNers a tour

Yeah thanks! I just need to find the time to get up there now. How do you like the school overall? What is the daily schedule like and do you mind being in such a big city (I live in blacksburg, VA)?

I like it overall, it will probably be nicer next year when they get most of the large animal construction done.

The city really isn't all that big. There's the strip, the old city, and West Hills. Turkey Creek for a large mall. The strip is on Cumberland and is the part that goes right next to the school. It is a popular hangout during football games and this means that it is painful to drive through and has limited parking (which becomes costly during games). The old city is where most people go for food and bars. Lots of pub-like areas and more modern bars. There are also all sorts of events there and free parking on nights and weekends. West Hills tends to be more spread out and is really convenient for most people since a lot of my classmates tend to live out there. There is a mall with a movie theater, fast food, that kind of thing.

It feels like a small town to me, but I spent 4 years before this in Atlanta. It doesn't feel too constrictive, though. There are also a lot of trail/hiking opportunities and Pigeon Forge/Sevierville is not far away (think Dollywood).

The schedule is variable. First year it is mostly 8-12 classes with some labs scheduled in the afternoon. It changes from day to day. There are no MWF and TTh classes like in undergrad. Some weeks, you will have something like physiology every day. other classes you may only have once a week. But because of the test schedule, they just sort of cram things into available spots.

Does everyone think we'll start to hear next week or the week after? I know the dean said he'd try to get the letters out asap...

I think last year people were receiving letters 2-3 weeks after the interviews. I interviewed on March 19ish and got my letter on April 1 (funny, right?).

They went out after two weeks last year, but I'm refusing to let myself think anything accept the 29th. That way I'm not constantly obsessing over my mail box and if it comes early then what a great surprise it will be.

I already told my mom, if I get mail from UT on Saturday 27 (while I'm at work) open it. If it's good news call me, if not I can find out when I get home. Other than that I'll be stalking the mail lady!!😀

I'm just hoping that my dream comes true....

I dreamed the other night that Dean Brace found me in the grocery store and told me I did so well on my interview that he didn't want me to have to wait for my letter to know I was in. I'm totally going to be looking over my shoulder the whole time we're at the grocery tomorrow.

LOL That would be awesome!!!😀

Alas, no Dean Brace at Kroger's today.....how sad. Guess I'll just have to stalk the mail lady with everyone else this week.

This year was my 2nd time interviewing. I thought it went much better. I've got a good feeling about it. Trying to stay positive during this whole waiting game is like trying to stop a sinking ship.

Yea, I know what you mean. It was my 2nd interview too, and it's killing me waiting on an answer! Good luck to everyone! 😀
