When is the deadline for you to relinquish your waitlist spot at other schools?

What are y'alls thoughts? Reapplication or going with what you already have?

Just curious...... 🙂

So guys, I finally made the decision to stay in Houston, and I withdrew from the University of Nevada.

So glad you are staying, getunconscious! 😍

I would fill out the FAFSA if you are on a waitlist. When you get a spot the process will move more quickly.

Right. I've filled out FAFSA and sent copies to all schools that I'm accepted/waitlisted.

At other Texas schoos, it is June 15th
For all other schools, it is the date you enroll for classes or begin orientation.
Thank you Madame! 🙂

Have you decided where you are going yet?

Aww...thanks true blue!!! 😍 😍

I've pretty much given up on UTSW b/c I'm holding a spot at UTH so they'll kick me off their waitlist soon. But I don't care because UTH is a great school and I really like it there.

Good luck to all of you!

You never know what can happen. I want to let all of you who are still waiting that there is still hope. I finally decided that I will be attending AECOM in ny, so I will be withdrawing from UT Houston within the next few days. This will open at least 1 spot, and who knows, perhaps there will be others that decide to attend an AMCAS school opening the way for some of you. Best of luck to you all!

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to let ya'll know that ONE person has been pulled from the waitlist at UT San Antonio... 😎

Unfortunately... it's NOT ME... 🙁
but hey... at least it's starting to move!

Come on DOMINOE EFFECT!

Gave up a spot at UTSW today--hope it helps ya'll out. Best of luck.

Not yet, but to be honest, I'm leaning away from UTSW.
I'm sure you will make the right choice when you finally decide.

Good luck to you! :luck:

Just workin' hard. You?

it's finals time here.
i have one next week.
i have an option on one, i'll decide depending on my grade on the 2nd exam.
and i gotta a project due for a class.

and i think then i graduate!!!

but still no med school 🙁
so graduation seems hollow or incomplete or something like that.

I feel your pain....WAITLISTS SUCK. Why doesn't anybody want us?? Feeling neglected, need some lovin.... Let us in!... TCOM has had 2ppl taken off of the waitlist? Am I right? What exactly is May 15th, the day that ppl can only hold one waitlist out of state? and in Texas, June 15th is the day that if you are accepted somewhere, you cannot be on a waitlist as well?

HI! actually the UTSA office of admissions told me! I'd been receiving alot of private calls lately... so I had to call in, just to make sure it wasn't them!

She said one person had been pulled already... but no info was released on that person for obvious reasons! haha...

I'm hoping more ppl will start giving up their spots soon! =) so we can have a crack at it!

maybe you just made that statement as an after thought but oh my gosh, i know how that feels in 100 different ways (which includes "something like that"). I've been bummed about graduating cause no med school. i've been resorting to thinking, "well you know there are other people who are graduating who haven't gotten in to med school/grad school/job whatevs." But the thing is, I think I at least have to make an effort to enjoy graduation because its not just about me and my current situation but the collective experiences of the people that I've been through college with. I want to be part of that celebration as much as i can mentally because how many times am i graduating from college? no matter how you view this waitlisted situation (and you're talkin to a glass is half empty kind of guy), I don't think it means that we should think less of the accomplishments we have made. peace out.

I'm still going to bunch of parties, there's no doubt about that but I may not have as much fun as I would otherwise. I can't help that.

and i'm going to be first in family to graduate but it still doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me (even if i had an acceptence), I don't know why.

and i think the process has made me half full kind of guy.

Last year I graduated (May 2004) without an acceptance (or waitlist for that matter).... and I was so bummed out, with no direction in life. I didn't take time to think about my accomplishments thus far, it is a huge accomplishment to graduate (it doesn't seem true, but still only a small percentage of our population has a Bachelor's degree). Don't be like me, I still partied Hardy, but while walking on stage I had an empty feeling inside, like I didn't have much to be proud of. I look back and regret that, because I really should've been happy about it and I really had alot to be proud of!

Party Hardy fellow friends! Take this time to say "Peace Out" to your classmates... cuz you prolly won't see them around as much anymore! 😛

I absolutely hate this waitlist stuff..everytime the phone rings, my heart races and when I realize it is just my sister or a friend I feel like I want to throw up..Then I realized that since I am not applying this year, if I finally get in the next time in two years from now I will be 28 when I start..I turn 26 on Sat and I am trying to have a happy week but this school stuff is cramping my bday style

true dat....i check my mail constantly, i constantly look for phone calls with pertinent area codes...my life is a freakin wreck....god damnit...

Hi kilppy...don't worry about age...it's all relative. 🙂

As for the future, I am concentrating on the immediate and will leave the future to when I finally get over this emotional mess of waiting for one of my godforsaken state schools to call me and say, "Yes!!! You be a doctor now!!!"

Maybe one day...***SIGH***

PS -- HAPPY BIRTHDAY KILPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀 👍

Hey yall...Hope everyone is doing ok? I just wanted to say keep your heads up and it will workout in the end...

Also, Just wandering how many of you only applied only to Texas schools, I have a friend who hasnt gotten in 3 years in a row and refuses to apply out of state. He also refuses to apply to DO schools which I find crazy. I mean if you want to be a DR. and dont have an ego about the initials after your name it is a great option.

Thats not to say that they are any easier to get into. Some programs are harder to get into but some arent and IMHO its good to keep your options open. Just a thought! BTW my friend has decent numbers (3.4 ish 27-28) but he may always be a borderline applicant and may continue to get waitlisted...I have strongly urged him to apply everywhere next year..

One question...Do you all think its gonna get harder next year in Texas as a result of the JAMP programs securing spots????

Good afternoon Tx peeps and happy post 5 de Mayo to ya'll. I have been MIA for the longest time but hopefully I will have more time to post with you guys as we wait to be pulled off the alternate lists.

I just called San Antone and spoke with, I believe Sofia at the registrars office. She told me that people have been pulled off as to how many have been selected she did not budge on giving me a specific number. As to how we find out wether or not we have been one of the lucky few it will be through snail mail, no phone call no email but snail mail. She told me that they have not sent out any letter of acceptance in the past few days, so sorry guys no good news for this weekend maybe next week. She also told me that they will keep gettin people off the alternate pool up until registration day which will be on July 26. Other than that I have no more to tell on SA.

I also called A&M but I guess they are too busy because I had to leave several voice messages at the admissions office, hopefully they will return my call soon.

Congratulations to all of you who will be graduating this semester and to the rest good luck and stay strong, this journey is not over by any means.

All really good topics. I personally think your friend can go either way. I mean, I'm sure his chances will increase a bit if he applies to more schools but with how competitive private schools are (or if you are trying to apply to a public school as an out of state) I'm not sure his increased chances of getting in are worth the effort (ie. increased costs, potential travelling, etc.). i think its ultimately his call and he could go either way. I think he would be helped much more by increasing his MCAT score like 2 or 3 points (no easy feat but just a suggestion).

Its my understanding that there are certain residencies that an individual cannot get into with a DO degree (like certain surgery residencies but I have no idea). There might be other types of programs that are off limits to DOs. If your friend is considering a future in these types of programs then maybe he would be better off keep trying to get into an MD program.

I think everybody who is thinking about reapplying next year should think that it will be just as hard to get in if not harder. And I have observed nothing that would make me think otherwise.

Hey there... Just to clarify...No specialty is per se off limits to DO's but some competive specialties can be hard to get...but thats also the case for MD students as well...they both would need good board scores to have a chance...I guess what my argument to him is that instead of spending so many years applying to save tuition money (TX resident) he would be better served gaining acceptance SOMEWHERE (MD/DO) in the US and start...

Unfortunalty a 3.4-3.5 (he did his undergrad at UT Austin which he said was hard to get good grades in) and 27-28 now days may not be as competive and one would need to apply to TONS of schools to increase chances...

Also from my understanding...the JAMP program has guaranteed 100s of students acceptances to a texas med school and with no immediate increase in spot, one would think that competition will be even more fierce... This is the first year the JAMP students are applying to med school.....

Thanks for the clarification. Out of curiosity (I'm really not trying to be argumentative) how many neurosurgeons, cardiac surgeons, oncologists out there have DOs? Granted specialties like these are mega hard to get into for either MDs or DOs, but I would think like 97% (if not higher) of the people in these specialties have MDs (if my number sounds ridiculous i apologize, its just based on what i've observed which i guess is not very much). I guess i still think that having an MD gives you a significantly better chance at harder types of residencies even though one's chances are low to begin with whether DO or MD.

Sorry to double reply like this but when you say "this is the first year.." do you mean the entering class of 2005 or the entering class of 2006. thanks.

Well my understanding is the JAMP started in the 2002...so the students who started JAMP are applying for admission for 2006...

As far as the number of JAMP students..I have no idea..but I heard once that generally 20-30% of spots are reserved for them...again this is only what I heard...I suggest checking it out for your self...try the JAMP website...

About DO's and extremely competive residencies...You should realize that only a very small % of physicians are DOs something like 5% (I think) so of course you will have very small percentage of them in any specialty.I will tell you that DO's practice in every specialty..so it makes sense that only 3-4% of neurosurg would be DOs...(I'm just going with your figures and have no idea about the % of neuros who are DOs)

SURE if you have to do some ULTRA COMPETIVE residency then your best bet is to get into the very best Allopatic school and be the very best student and get the very best USMLE score....
but I will assure you that going to DO school will give you a very good oppurtunity to pursue the specialty of your choice. Please also realize that DO's (along with the MD match) also have certain residancy spots that are allocated only to them by the AOA...so there are numerous options..

But you have to realize that no matter what school you go to a lot of placement depend solely on you...

Don't forget that race will also be considered next year, further increasing the remaining competition. Some schools unofficially consider race now (allegedly). Check out Baylors % spread. Given the high Texas hispanic population, I can see the reasoning for other perspectives. Please no URM ranting on this nice, peaceful thread.

Not to apply outside of Texas is just plain silly. If you really want it, do whatever it takes. Even if the cost is $100K more. I tried that the first year, was borderline, then cast a wider application net this year. Two OOS acceptances and two Texas waitlists. Given the current rate of compensation, the lost income from sitting out a year or two will more than offset the increased cost for OOS.

Thanks for politely dispelling the myth. This will be even less of an issue upon graduation in four years. DO's are in every field.

Took the words right out of my mouth. A doctor is a MD is a DO.

Here's one DO at work...

Oh good Lord, did this really just turn into ANOTHER MD vs. DO thread?

Give it a rest, seriously!

Back to the actual topic of this thread, has anyone heard anything from UTSW yet?
