So... apparently I DO have to make that decision.

Baylor or UTSW. Good god, Chirstmas HAS come early.

SANTA IS HERE!!! 😍

Uh oh. You didn't sign anything in your own blood while chanting obscure latin phrases in praise of a certain malevolent superbeing, did you? Dude, UTMB really isn't that bad 🙂. You still have time to get Harvard by midnight...

Very big congrats! Let me know which you decide, we may end up classmates 👍

So I take it UTSW is still sending out acceptances??

i give up.

this is the worst winter vacation ever. period.

she'd own up to it too. but yeah, the honeymoon is a good experience.

cruising was fun too. definitely sucks money right out of you, but I did enjoy it.

Yup, women cost money in general, you should know that by now. 😉

Hey Army! Glad to have you back. Hope you are well and that married life is treating you well!

TheRealMD, congrats on your acceptances! You get to make some tough decisions too!

Things are definitely slow around here... So is everyone recovering from Christmas feasts or is everyone out shopping? Hmpf...

I know, I can hear the crickets chirping! I guess everybody got their acceptances and so don't feel the need to come to these boards anymore. ;_;

Haha, but no i'm still stuck at the office and it's depressing. We don't really celebrate Christmas either, so yesterday was really quite (and depressing) for me as well. They need to move match day to Christmas day, that way atleast we all know our fate.

I've been thinking ..... .... so should I try and raise my 31 (if I don't get in this year, which seems very probable) or should I go ahead and start my masters in spring or summer and try to wrap it up in a year and half by next years admission. That might be a plus on my file too. OR, should I just be a fatass and do nothing and just make sure I apply SUPER EARLY next year. Suggestions? 😕

I think there is a lot to be said for getting that application in super early. Maybe throwing in some volunteer work would help?? Retaking the MCAT is a lot of stress and a 31 is not at all bad. Maybe you should wait until after the match, and then if you don't get in, ask the adcoms/admissions deans where you can improve. You still have that UTSW interview so don't lose hope now.

I know trying to stay positive is draining. I feel really crappy right now because my only hope is UTH (which probably doesn't want me, since I didn't get a personal hand written note from Dr. Kellaway in the letter they sent after the interview) and I didn't hear from A&M even though I thought I totally rocked my interviews there and want to go there because I think it would be a good fit for me. So of course I'm feeling sorry for myself... sniffle.

Anyway, hopefully February 1st will bring good news. If not, I will be spending the better part of next year in rehab/MCAT studying - ack! I really do need a better score. I can't even think about next year. This year has been so stressful that I don't think I want to do this again. I keep wishing Filo will have dreams about the last interviewees and let us in so I don't have to think about next year.

To top it all off, my throat feels awful, almost like I am going to gag every time I swallow. Can't wait to get home and go to sleep. Did I mention depression is setting in...? Ok, not really, but feeling rejected is not working too well for me!!

Seriously Mo, I didn't mean to rant.

I genuinely think that even though it's tough to wait it out, see what happens during the match and ask the adcoms for advice if it doesn't work out. Doing a master's would be a plus, but tons of work too. I vote for sitting on your butt and doing nothing... wait, that's the easy option... darn!

Also, check with Diana - she probably has really great advice. Perhaps if she shares her secret to success, we could all benefit!!

agggghhh... too much Christmas eggnog and holiday cheer.

what day is it? is it 2008 yet?

Haha, lol, no explanations necessary, rant on all you want!

Yeah, you make a good point of asking the deans about weaknesses in my application. Even though I work in the medical field, I want to start doing some volunteer work at the medical center. Anyone know any good people to get in touch with for volunteering 1-2 days a week?

Does anyone know what percentage of applicants (with interviews) do not match?

Anyone happen to know if adcoms will be doing anything between now and the 31st?

Ug, I sorta know how you feel. I was throwing up all day on Christmas. I'm coming around but, man, that was my worst Christmas ever. I can't wait till I'm a doctor. I assume I'll be able to instantly cure myself of any sickness.

Arg, I left the sheet with that info at school. For some reason, there are info sheets that TMDSAS doesn't like to publicly give out, nor have they even updated the application statistics from last cycle!

I'm guessing, but if TheRealMD has the fact sheet that'd be awesome. But here's my logic:

Overall the total number of applicants instate are 4000, or those I think it's safe to assume about 1400-1800 get AT LEASE ONE interview. Many get multiple. From these ~ 1500 about ( 200 UTMB, 50 UTH, 135 A&M, 100 Tech, ?? UTSW, 100 TCOM?, 200 UTSA?) 900 or so enter the match with offers in hand, which leave another 200-300 open seats. So after the match about 300-600 people who interviewed at one place or another are left out without anything. Thats just my $0.02 and it could be waaaay off.

Anyone happen to know if adcoms will be doing anything between now and the 31st?

Yup, read SDN and laught at those of us without any offers (like myself). 👎

Yup, gotta love being a doctor and curing yourself instantly with the special pills that only doctors can have. :meanie:

Yup, please correct my numbers when you get your little fact sheet.

Well, to get nerdy for a moment....

In 2006, 38% of Tx tmdsas applicants were accepted by a tmdsas school, and 10.6% of OOS were accepted. I remember last year that ~54% of apps got int'd (inclusive of OOS I think??), so probably around 70% of int's got accepted somewhere...slightly higher for instates. Assuming my atrophied math skills still work.

You know what's funny about that sheet is that it implies the best MCAT score to have is a 32-33, but when you take a look at the one the give out based on classes right after the match, it is skewered MUCH higher.

Wish they also included info on the percent interviewed, then it'd be perfect!

But based on your numbers, which seem pretty accurate, 70% isn't bad at all. But then again, one would love to know the percentage with multiple acceptances to help predict how this years match would turn out. If there is a high percentage with multiple offers, then you know that the match will cause some major shifting.

I guess Baylor/OOS suck the best out haha. Keep us updated on the UTSW/Baylor heavyweight bout.🙂

Here ya go, stat man. From last year:

sorry, I had to do it

Stat man, thats what they call me. 😎

On a more serious note, the figures did not look too friendly for me. I was hoping for more people with multiple acceptances, but thats because I had forgotten the people on SDN are not normal. :meanie:

Anyways, i'll have to do some analysis later when I have time and determine what percentage of my hope should I keep clinging on to. 🙁

I'd like to see the stats of people with 2 or more interviews and acceptance numbers. That seems pretty specific though doesn't it?? 😛

Oh wow! Thank-you for posting those stats! Life just decided it doesn't hate me near as much! 😀

whoa! only 21 got into a school that they ranked higher than their prematch??? Reasonably do y'all think this number will go up significantly since UTH didn't fill nearly as much as they did last year early(according to an msIII when i interviewed there-last year nearly 80% was filled prematch) or around the same???...I know this number was a lot lower than I would have thought but I guess schools also generally gave out more prematch offers last year, any thoughts...

Does anyone know what's the deal with A&M? Are they going to fill any of their seats via the match?? I sure hope so..

The pre-match stuff is the reason why UTH is holding back a lot of their seats. We should definitely see more match activity this year.

It looks like the best MCAT is 28-29...would you clarify your statement??

It looks like the best MCAT is 28-29...would you clarify on your statement??

Well I mean.. take the number of people that have a 28-29, divide that by the number of people who got in with a 28-29, and you get a percentage. That percentage compared to other groups is highest for the 28-29 range, which strictly looking at statistics, gives you the best chance to get in.

Now, using slightly more common sense, a person who has above a 28-29 might interpret that they're chances are almost assured of getting in and those people just choose to go elsewhere.

However, people forget that these lists are only after everything is said and done (when school starts) Humans are a very impatient species. The other list that TMDSAS compiles (but oddly isn't on their website) is the app statistics right after the match which show a slightly different picture. There, you can clearly infer that a higher MCAT gets you into med school.

An example, I can remember that out of the 165 people with an MCAT above 35, 125 people got in somewhere in Texas after the match. That number drops to 65 as you see in the PDF. I don't know about you but 75% chance just based on your MCAT score alone is pretty darn good to me.

Anyway, what I really meant to say was that stats are very skewed because people always think in terms of getting in from a pre-match offer or the match itself instead of sometime afterwards. 😳

another example of how weighty the MCAT is in the application cycle!

hmm...these are interesting statistics.

i have a question similar to mo's.

i have ~ a 3.8 and a 28P from UT austin (human bio). this cycle, i've been interviewed by a&m, tech, and houston (no offers yet). in the event that i don't get in, i really do not want to take the MCAT again (partly because of the workload involved and partly because i was averaging around a 30 on practices, and am scared of getting a 28-29 again). there's really a lot of substantial things one can do in the off-year, but the question is should i retake the MCAT if i don't get in this cycle.

your thoughts would really be appreciated.

that's kinda disheartening. i'm hoping that UTH has lived up to the hype in regards to keeping back seats for the match.

otherwise, bye bye houston.

Hey now, Baylor's not out of your league either. I certainly never thought I would get in, especially this early. And I thought I totally screwed up one of my interviews too. The guy was so hard on me!

No need to devalue yourself to soften a rejection blow. You have the chances of getting into both! 👍

If you don't get a spot in match, I would call some ADCOMS and ask if they can give you advice. If they think you should retake the MCAT, they'll say so. However, there might be some other aspect of your application that is holding you back, and they can point that out as well.

Also, if you're comfortable with it, you might consider applying to TCOM next year. My stats are similar to yours, I interviewed at TCOM, A&M, and UTMB(did not apply to Tech), and I was accepted to TCOM on November 14. I've been very impressed with their program each time I'm visited, and I'm looking forward to attending next year.

So I'm taking the second part of Organic Chemistry this spring, and I took the first part last spring (i.e., there's been a summer and a fall semester since then, and I might be a bit rusty). As far as I can tell, the second half begins with spectroscopy and spectrometry. Should I spend a bit of time reviewing the first half before class starts, and if so, which parts? Or will I be able to figure it out as I go along? I made an A the first time.

Thanks!

The NMR is fluff stuff before you begin real ochem 2. Reactions themselves aren't important from ochem 1, and I'd say reading far ahead isn't as beneficial in this class as others (as you'll probably forget it anyway).

Focus on what got you that A in ochem 1 assuming it's the same professor. Organic Chemistry is all about relationships of ELECTRONS, so you need to be constantly asking yourself "Where are the electrons?" If your class is like mine, you'll eventually reach a point where you figure out most the reactions you have to learn are merely variations of each other. Then it's a piece of cake! 👍

Good luck, and NEVER get behind!

I know, but the more days that pass the smaller I imagine my chances to be.

I hope that I get into both and have to make a choice, but I'd be happy with an acceptance to either.

I agree. Relate whatever new rxns you're learning back to the basics of O. Chem 1. What's happening to the electrons? Is there SN1 or SN2 character? etc. Focus on understanding and then memorize reagents/mechanisms afterwards.

Organic chemistry is kinda like those magic eye posters. It takes forever to figure out how to see the picture, but once you do it's easy.

If it makes you feel any better, I took second semester this summer 4 years after taking first semester, and I managed ok.

Didn't you get into San Antonio? If so, shouldn't you already be happy? I'm tired of people complaining when they have multiple acceptances. Just be happy that you're going to be a doctor.
