Forgive me if this question doesn’t make sense to you. I am prematched to a Texas school currently and accepted the offer. Is it secure to put this school on the third rank on my school list for Match day? I am happy and satisfied with this school but I still want to give a try at UTSW and Baylor at match day, (most likely not going to get a Prematch offer from them). Any risk to lose my admission at my current Prematched school if I don’t rank it first? I am a little confused on how TMDSAS match works.
Your prematch school is a sure thing and you won’t lose it by ranking other schools above it.
Match Day results are final so think it over carefully and vote in your true order of preference

Wysdoc is so quick on these forums, haha. You won't lose admission by ranking other schools above, but you may end up at one of the higher-ranked schools (UTSW/Baylor) on match day if they ranked you high enough. The worst case scenario is that you match to the pre-matched school, pretty good position to be in.

Thank you for the explanation! That helps me to feel less stressful in the coming months. Will think through over the break to come up a rank list. Hard to decide between UTSW and Baylor.

Thank you! Yes, that is how I like this forum! Always get quick response and always feel less anxious after.

Not sure if an official version of this exists somewhere but here's what I think are the policies for Texas schools on accepting pre-II update letters (based on whether a school has explicitly said "no" to updates). Made this list for myself and thought it might be useful to anyone who is also a bit empty-handed this app cycle like me 🤐

(if anyone sees something that is wrong please LMK and I'll edit it)

ACCEPTS PRE-II UPDATES
  • Baylor
  • Long
  • McGovern
  • TAMU
  • TCOM
  • TTUHSC
  • UIWSOM
  • UT Tyler
  • UTRGV
  • UTMB
  • SHSU COM

DOES NOT ACCEPT PRE-II UPDATES
  • Dell
  • PLFSOM
  • TCU
  • UH Fertitta
  • UTSW
Disclaimer: I believe some of these schools are pretty much finished with their interview season so sending an update letter pre-II may not be worth it.

(Edited your list a bit : UTSW no updates, TAMU does not like the "SOM" initials) wysdoc

might be a dumb question - how do we update/send Fall grades?
You will log in to your TMDSAS portal and fill in the course number, term, and grade just like you did when filling out the TMDSAS primary, & hit “save”.
It will be forwarded to all the schools you applied to

Also on the topic of pre-II updates, I emailed Texas Tech Lubbock and they said they stopped accepting updates on Nov 15th! They will still take them but apparently they will not be uploaded to anything the adcoms can see. Did anyone see where this deadline was posted? I double checked my emails and their website but I never got anything about that!

As far as I know Nov 15th was the deadline for receipt of the secondary essays and any letters of recommendation.
However, this may also be their way of saying they do not take into consideration any pre-interview updates.
If you are still in college you should fill in your Fall 2022 grades on TMDSAS and submit that - the grades will be forwarded to all your TMDSAS schools.

Is there a deadline for when we should submit our Fall 2022 grades? Would it hurt us if it is not submitted by match day?

not a hard deadline. Updating them with your grades can reassure the schools you are continuing your same good performance, and if there is a small downward drift send them anyhow.

TMDSAS Match: dates and explanations, EY 2023

Watch this video about the TMDSAS Match AND the first analysis of how many people get Prematch offers.

***The dates mentioned in the video were the dates for EY 2022**** This year's dates are:
Feb 17, 2023 at 5 PM Central Time is the deadline for saving your rank order list on the TMDSAS portal, ranking all your interviewed schools.
March 3, 2023 is Match Day and Matches will hit your TMDSAS portal and/or email at 8 AM.

This TMDSAS video was produced in early October 2021 and it does a good job of explaining the Match and the numbers of people who get pre-match offers. I think a Pre-match offer should be a comfort to an applicant, because it means you are definitely going to med school and you won't have to reapply. It's not a contest of who can collect the most prematch offers, or a shameful event if you get none.
1 out of 7 people who interviewed got a pre-match offer in 2021, 6 out of 7 did not.
Approximately half of those who interviewed for TMDSAS schools were ultimately accepted in 2021.

In EY 2021, there were
7359 complete applications
3582 interviews (3104 to Texans and 478 to OOS)
1849 matriculants (1720 Texans and 129 OOS)
of the 1720 Texas matriculants, only 502 had received 1 or more pre-match offers

After you have watched it, and if you still have questions, ask away.

While I am fortunate enough to have had several interviews, and as much as I would like a prematch to help calm my nerves, I appreciate your reassurances that most do not prematch.

Which schools can we assume are done sending interviews based off of prior years/known info? Trying to figure out what schools I’m actually still a contender for.

Difficult to predict since this year has been different than last. But if you go to the republic of Texas thread from last year wysdoc has dates posted.

I have a question about how the match works. I understand that my school rankings will affect where I match to but, does the order in which I rank the schools affect if I will match at all?

Rank how you feel. Don’t second guess yourself.
It is possible though to have interviews and still not match. If this happens you have 3 months to get in from a WL.
It doesn’t mean something is wrong with you, but that the number of class seats is finite.

Hypothetically yes. It’s an algorithm made to match who you want with who wants you. They want as many first choice to first choice matches as possible and so forth. So if a school ranked you and someone else next to eachother but they ranked them first and you ranked them fourth, the algorithm would favor them. Then once a class is full, it’s full. There’s not room for every student who got an interview.

Source: years of greek life recruitment that uses a similar algorithm so someone correct me if I’m completely wrong
not necessarily.

The algorithm would favor whichever applicant is ranked higher on the school's list.

Scenario

John's Rank:
1. TAMU
2. McGovern
3. UTMB

Elise's Rank:
1. UTMB
2. McGovern
3. TAMU

UTMB's Rank:
1. John
2. Bobby
3. Elise
4. Ava

UTMB will ALWAYS match John AND Bobby (if they don't match into other schools) before they match Elise.

In other words, make your list as your "Dream List" and don't try to game the system

OMG I am sure the TMDSAS has a more technically sophisticated algorithm than Greek Life recruitment 🍻🍺🍻 😵😵:sendoff:

Something interesting to look at/discuss. If appropriate for this sub.
This article has a thread over here, please comment on that thread if you wish: 🤔 Lawsuit

I’m sure it’s the same gist while hypothetically less technologically advanced- trying to match as many people into their top choice while giving schools their top choice. Same with recruitment: trying to match as many new members with their top choice while matching organizations with their top choice. We have to rank the people we recruit in order from 1-100something and differentiate between 54/55 etc. If you’ve seen recruitment in the south, it’s processing 1000+ recruitees at a time with 20+ organizations, and has thousands of dollars pouring in to it.

I'm glad you enjoyed your frat/sorority recruitment, but it is not equivalent to medical school admissions.

while miserable it was definitely more enjoyable than med school apps haha.

I was under the impression that the match system used by TMDSAS is pretty much exactly sorority recruiting sans prematch lol. It’s still a match system

Well everyone, interviews are finally coming to an end. Might have a few more invites over the next few weeks, but I don’t expect any more to roll in for me (of course I will welcome any strays any schools want to send my way 😉). I was lucky enough to be able to interview at my top choice program and several others. Unfortunately no pre matches, but hopefully will hear good news in March. Will be submitting my rank list soon. About to be a nail biting nervous wreck for this next month!

We're all rooting for you come March!

If I am struggling deciding between two schools and one is in the TMDSAS match, could I post here or do I go in the X vs Y thread?

Last Pre-Match Day:

So, it's January 31. There has been some happy news this week for a few applicants getting scholarship offers (UTSW & UTMB), but I haven't heard of anyone getting a last-day Pre-match offer today.

If you have some good news about a pre-match, please share it on the school specific threads, or on this thread.

Now What?
On to the next task, think and rethink but don't overthink your TMDSAS Ranking list.
Press "Save" and take a screen shot of your rank order for your records.
The list will disappear *Poof** from your portal after the deadline, and this always worries people.

Rank all the schools where you have interviewed, BUT if you have already been rejected after an interview, don't rank that one. They are no longer considering you. This has happened to a small number of applicants this year; sorry, guys.

To all my fellow IS applicants, I hope you're doing well and in good spirits. The prematch period is officially behind us, and the rank list frenzy has begun. Wishing you all the very best during the remainder of this cycle. I hope we all maintain our peace and remember to enjoy life and live in the moment as much as possible. We have a lot of thinking and shuffling to do, but let's not get so wrapped up in the next 17 days that we neglect the other things in life that matter to us.

We got this. Let's get it done!

Thank you sir for your support and motivation! It’s going to be a long month, but glad I’ve got y’all to help me through it!

You're so welcome! And, indeed, it is actually really cool that we have a place that welcomes our banter, where it be in the spirit of frustration, confusion, or celebration.

Wait, did Tyler's prematch period get extended, or am I misinterpreting?
Two applicants were told that specifically by UTTyler if you look at that page. I believe it applies only to that school and I have seen nothing announced by TMDSAS about an overall extension.

Wow that's interesting, but it does make some sense, as they got a much later start than the other schools this cycle. Could mean some good news for those waiting. Thanks for the info!
