Most of the Texas schools take the silent rejections approach. UTRGV bizarrely sent out some rejections last cycle before they had even sent any prematch offers 😵

Is this this year's official ROT thread? If so, it's missing the traditional Texas flag and Gonzalez flag in the first post. Someone needs to fix that. See old ROT threads.

The Republic of Texas XXXVI: You may all go to hell, and I will go to a Texas medical school
The Republic of Texas XXXIV: Whoever doesn't like Whataburger needs to leave

And many more.

Where did you end up doing your training and by now, working?

So I just did a couple of my secondaries and found out that mcgovern has 3 questions with a word count of 2500 each... Who the hell is reading these and how much are they getting paid?! Each question makes up a whole secondary for another school.

Is it because they just started doing secondaries that the word count is so high? Also anyone who did the secondary already, how much did you actually write? Because I wrote a perfect answer for the 1st question and only scraped 1000 words...

I have a basic question.

How does the "match" like system for Texas medical school (not residency) admissions work?

I'm guessing you haven't started on the UTSW secondaries?

As far as McGovern, Its 2500 characters, not words, if I'm not mistaken.

I think the consensus on word/character count is quality over quantity, if you've said what you need to say in 1000 characters then so be it. I don't think adcoms want to read the fluff as much as we don't want to write it. As an aside, I got an II for a school and only wrote about half the required word/character limit for each question.

If you can, put it in the first post so that all who enter may gaze upon our great flag.

Can't say too much, as that might give away my identify. But I did my schooling at A&M. Residency was not in Texas, and I'm working out of state for the moment.

TMDSAS has detailed info. Here is the very basic rundown:

1. Schools can start informing students that they will be “accepted” starting on october 15 for OOS candidates and Nov 15 for IS candidates. You DO NOT necessarily need to hold any “pre match” offers to match on match day.
2. Before Feb 1st, you must submit a ranked, ordered list of all of the programs where youn interviewed. Do not forget to rank your programs after you interview even if you haven’t done all of your interviews yet. You can edit this list at any time up to match day.
3. On Feb 1st an algorithm will match medical school lists with applicant lists and “Match” you to the highest intersection on both of those lists. From then on you will only be able to hold one acceptance from a TX school. Read the TMDSAS book for info on waitlist dynamics post match.

So I was transmitted to schools 6/22 and just had my committee packet uploaded directly to TMDSAS yesterday. Any idea how long it takes for the packet to be sent to schools or is it automatic?

It’s available to the schools as soon as it’s uploaded. When the individual school decides to download updates is another story. It took Tech and El Paso a week for mine to show up as received and completed.
TCOM has a 3-5 day policy per their website.

Seems like they were a bit faster this time, both Tech and El Paso show up as complete now. Hopefully the other schools are this fast haha

Just curious, why does TMDSAS ask about other med schools you're applying to? I applied to 15+ reach/OOS med schools and listed all of them on my TMDSAS application. This wouldn't have hurt me in any way would it? (LM 73-74).

Nothing in the handbook about why, so my guess would be for data compilation. I listed about 20 on mine and still managed a Texas interview. I'm almost certain this is the case for a lot of applicants. I can't imagine that would be something that counts as an applicant. So what if you applied OOS, perhaps you have family there, maybe you got recruited, they could always lure you back with the tuition, lol.

TLDR: No

I'm pretty sure I saw someone ask about why TMDSAS gathers that data and they said they don't actually send that to the schools, it is merely for their internal data crunch. I hope that is true b/c when the pragmatist in me was looking at MSAR stats for what OOS schools I would likely apply, I posted several schools that my numbers were very competitive for and that were in geographical locations that I thought I might enjoy...without doing much research on the schools. Turns out, 2 of them were historically black colleges, so yeah, imagine trying to explain that one in an interview 😳 Not that I would be opposed to attending those schools, it's just that I initially put them down b/c I assumed I would apply to them as safety schools because of their metrics.

Should I start to be concerned yet. This is my third time applying to medical schools (LizzyM 70.5 wars 76). I submitted all my material by the middle of July, and I still have not heard back anything (by this time last year, I already had an interview from TCOM). It might be neuroticism, but seeing people in threads who submitted their applications after me getting II's is making me feel like they have passed over my application.

Don't worry unless you get no interviews by November. It is hard to see others getting interviews before you. Another thing to keep in mind is that although it would be really late for somebody to submit an application in September, the official deadline for submission at most TX schools is September 29th. After that hard deadline the schools will be able to compare all potential interview candidates and can send out a bunch more II after seeing their complete selection.

I get that, but this has happened to me two times before. Its just hard to keep calm when I'm seeing lesser results when compared to last year even though I improved my application.

I wouldn't worry about tcom. Your score might be so high that they don't consider you a candidate since you will most likely choose a MD school and they are your 3rd or 4th backup. This happens a lot. Many schools even reject very high score candidates in order to choose ones closer to their average that have a higher chance of coming to their school. I'm surprised you even got a II before with your scores.

My MCAT score was a bit lower last cycle (it went up from a 508 to a 515 for this cycle). Maybe that explains it

yah could be. I would be surprised if you didn't hear back from more places with an improvement like that. A 515 is high for TCOM, solid for everywhere in TX, but not quite high enough to snap up the early invites (judging from the SSD threads with a lot of people having LMs of 75+). ReApp thing might also come into play.

That's definitely it. You did way better, meaning you aren't in there target zone and would most likely get into a MD school. So they choose to send the II to people who with lower scores with higher chance of coming.

After all, you can only interview so many people.

I submitted everything earlier this month but my question is whether or not schools will wait till they have CASPer results to send out an II?

Not sure about other schools, but in a email Dr. Kellaway sent to me the other day, she mentioned that CASPer would only be used for data collection purposes so I would imagine it isn't a requirement for Long. It would be best to just take it ASAP though.
Edit: realized I'm an idiot since you probably already knew that it isn't a requirement for Long since they don't even have a link up yet lol

I've looked at MSAR and the individual school websites and haven't found a 100% clear answer to this question. I hope someone on this thread can help.

Do any Texas medical schools reject AP credits for English if those credits are included on a college transcript and assigned a certain number of credits but not assigned a grade?

I believe 1 of the Texas Tech schools email mention that not taking it MIGHT affect your II. But since it has just recently been introduced, I believe they are just testing the water and it shouldn't affect II.

Take it asap just in case though.

I don't see any schools that reject AP credits for English. Most do restrict using AP credits for science prereqs

Anyone know the prematch numbers for McGovern and TT El Paso? Long said they fill 50% or less of their class with prematch offers, if anyone wanted to know

I sent it most of my secondaries end of July/ first 2 weeks of august. Is that considered too late? I'm starting to worry....

You’re fine. It’s still early. If you’re in the same spot in November, then start to think about your future plans.

So schools such as el paso and utrgv really like applicants from that area. Do schools like Long, Mcgovern, UTSW, tech, tamu and dell have the same preferance (assuming one has competitive stats)?

I don’t think McGovern and UTSW share that preference. I also don’t get the impression that Dell does either.

Is it normal to have long gaps in time while waiting for additional interviews? I was complete mid may, got 3 interviews right from the start, and since have heard nothing for a month and a half. Just trying to get a better idea of how the interview selection works. Thanks!

That's how my cycle has been. I think I got 8 of 9 (3 of 4 TX) interviews in a 10-day span and then silence for a month.

I'm on the same boat as you right now. Finished everything early June, got 3 interviews in the span of a week in mid-late July, and I haven't heard anything from other schools since then.

Also I have a question. Does getting early interviews in Texas help your chances at those schools? People say early interviews generally help, but the Texas schools don't do admissions on a rolling basis.

Nah, you can interview in December or January and still get in

Good morning, Texas applicants!

The dawn broke yesterday, with the first offers of admission for the 2018-2019 season from UIWSOM, the DO school in San Antonio.

Remember that the DO schools handle things a little differently than the Texas MD timeline, tending to make admission offers 3-4 weeks after an interview and asking for a substantial deposit early.

There won't be any Texas MD offers of admission until November 15, at the earliest, to Texas residents. Nov 15 to Dec 31 constitutes the "pre-match offer period". An applicant might get several pre-match offers, or none, before the official match in February. Any Texas applicant who has had interviews will be included in the Texas match process.

Keep busy during the long application period doing what you do, keep learning, volunteering, and establishing a healthy lifestyle. Don't let the long silent months of waiting mess with your head.

Are we required to send new transcripts at the end of every semester? I have some tough courses this semester and my GPA will probably take a hit. Next semester is way easier but unfortunately that's too late

Yes, you are required to send new grades (To TMDSAS, who will send them along to each school you applied to) each semester, according to the TMDSAS instructions: (quoted from page 46)
The following are things an applicant must do in order to keep themselves informed and ensure adherence to TMDSAS guidelines following the transmission of the application.

  • ❏ 1. Send updated transcripts at the end of each term completed: Be sure to submit an official transcript reflecting new grades between the application deadline and planned entry date – Summer 2019. All new grades will be verified and new TMDSAS GPAs will be computed and made available to your designated schools.

During this long waiting period between submission and interviews, it's also a good idea to check over the TMDSAS application handbook a few times just to be sure you have done the followup things you need to do. :bookworm:

Does anyone know is tex schools give out scholarships during prematch or do they generally wait until after the match?

Generally much later, so it isn’t of much help to you in deciding. However, the TX tuitions are all in the same general range.

See that cowboy? He is rounding up the straggler to join the rest of the herd.

Are you a straggler? (not done with your secondary application essays or other parts of your TMDSAS application?)
Join the herd now before the final deadline September 29th. After that, the herd will drive on to greener pastures without you!

P.S. y'all, I haven't been posting a bunch lately but I am still around, tag me with questions you may have.

Being a member of "the sandwich generation" ain't for sissies and I have been pulled in a few different directions lately.
I feel most like an egg-salad sandwich being gripped too hard so the filling is squishing out the sides 😱:shy:

Never fear, more corny western themes are yet to come as the application cycle goes on!:cow::chicken:

I wish there were a box to check for this on the application, lol. I'm sure everyone has their struggles but there is some degree of fortitude required to financially and emotionally support multiple generations, especially when role dynamics are in a state of constant flux, that simply can't be compared to: "man, I took 17 hrs this semester and life is rough." 😀

It should be worth at least 1.3 points added to your LM 😛

I submitted all secondaries in early June, so everything was in except I took a second MCAT at the end of June, so that was missing until August when TMDSAS received it (it went up in all sections). I haven't really heard back from any schools, so I am wondering if I need to call the schools that I havent heard from to ensure that they have my application. I got emails from most of them saying that my secondary was received, but I personally feel like my app has been lost because they were all in by early June. LM 69, good extracurriculars. Thanks!

They don't even look at your application until the score comes in. So that's probably why you haven't heard back if you got your score in August. You made sure you set the mcat date on Tmdsas right?

Yes, my primary showed that I was taking it again, then it updated automatically once it received the scores from the AAMC. Then I changed on the primary app that I was not taking it again so I switched that check box. I know things must be okay because I heard back from a school about 2 weeks ago, but again, the silence kinda concerns me. I was also mislead that having all my secondaries in super early would have put me at advantage in a way that when my new score came in, my app would be there right on top of the list...
