Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

Well columbia's entire medical school is a few floors of one building (they have a separate research building). Same thing with NYU.

I havent been inside the others so i couldnt tell you for certain, but generally the trend in ALL medical schools is to be contained within a very small area of one building. I can tell you that almost every place i interviewed at was like that. Stony Brook, Vermont, UMDNJ, RWJ, Drexel, SUNY upstate, and all the DO schools just to name a few. There are tons more. Only NY Medical College and Penn State are ones I can definitely think of that had a "college campus" feel to their medical school proper, rather than having the entire medical school stuffed in the corner of a building and being told "but you have free reign to use anything else we have for the undergrads"

USC has a campus feel to it. Albeit, a small campus compared to their main campus.

Interview Invite this morning! Just scheduled my interview for Dec 3rd.

Scheduled mine for 12/3 as well. See you there! 🙂

Congrats to you all! What are your stats and timeline for completion, etc.? Thanks!
I never got a complete email but I mailed in my secondary on 10/5 and they just cashed my check last week.

visare and heroine what are your stats?
3.33 cGPA, 29P (10BS/10PS/9VR), IS

I did mention in my essay that my family lives in Queens and talked about how much I would like to live in NYC. Not sure if that mattered but I think it helped!

Any who interviewed yet hear back about acceptances? I don't like waiting, and they told us 6 weeks. But last year people heard back 2-3 weeks after interviewing.

II this morning as well! 3.4/33 MCAT. Scheduled for 11/19! From California, any advice on cool/inexpensive neighborhoods to check out? I live in Oakland, CA right now and I'd love to find the NYC complement!

II today also! 3.3 and 33 mcat. December 10th. Also flying out from California.

you could live in the bronx or washington heights. They would be relatively cheap to live in.

If you want to check out cool areas while you are there for your interview..check out the West Village or Lower East Side.

So I'm pretty confused right now... I turned in my secondary in October but like the idiot I am, forgot to attach the essay. The admin emailed me a couple weeks later (after I had already been accepted to another school) telling me thati forgot my essay. Since i got in to a higher choice school i decided to not even turn the essay in (bye bye $200).Fast forward to today and I get an ii! Anyone get an ii who forgot to turn their secondary essay in? I'm debating going to it for practice, but am afraid they invited me just to call me out on not turning in an essay

II invite today! (GOD I've been waiting so long to say that on a thread on here)

Submitted 10/3
Complete 10/17
3.2 sgpa 3.4 cgpa 29 MCAT

It may be hard to tell based on this thread, but it really seems like they are focusing on high MCAT scores for these interviews. Some have said they said in the interviews that everyone has had an MCAT of 28 or higher and obviously from those who have posted their stats, they are giving a lot of love to the high MCAT scores.

Very frustrating, but what are you gonna do.....

what my sincere hope is, that perhaps they are doing this at first but then they will start inviting people with scores a little lower since im sure many people with higher scores may go MD. Then maybe it will be more of a mix. I thought that giving in a secondary early would to get an enough for an interview since they prescreen. But it seems like three round of interviews have gone out and I still have nothing... I emailed and was told that when they committee makes a decision to interview me they will send me an email... not sure what that even meant. But i guess it didnt mean a rejection!!
I'm hoping for the same as well since my MCAT is at a 27, so a little lower than apparently who they are interviewing now. My 3 weeks post secondary is Friday, and I will be following up with them then. I'm guessing I will receive the same response...

If you do recieve that, do not give up hope. My thinking is that if they were completely not interested they would have just rejected us right away. People who have 30+ MCAT scores must have other interviews. I just am trying to stay positive with the best of my ability.

When I called a couple days ago he told me that they would be emailing everyone their status within the next couple weeks. He wouldn't tell me my status over the phone.

Seems like secondary =/= ii this year. I want my $200 back...:smack:

:scared:Oh god, does that mean they will be sending out rejections in a couple of weeks?......

Got an ii yesterday! Not sure the exact date I submitted my secondary but I think it was the first or second week of October. cGPA 3.44, sgpa 2.8, MCAT 29 Q, 9,9,11.

Just something to note. I called the school to see if my app was all up to date and they said they didn't receive my LOR's which I sent via interfolio in early Oct. They did receive them but my file was never updated..but now I am complete after I called them . It maybe be worth a try to call them and see if the same thing is happening to you!

anyone from the earlier october interviews get calls for acceptance yet? i know they said 6 weeks but danngg.

Did you receive the email that said they received your supplemental application and fee? I'm not sure if that means they've also received my LORs...

If you still haven't heard back after 3-4 weeks, I would just call the office to make sure they're not missing anything. It took me quite a while to get a hold of Mr. Sow but I called last week to ask if they received my mcat scores and if my file was complete. He was very helpful and I got my invite via email the next day!

Can anyone who has interviewed provide some info about which airport (jfk or laGuardia) is closer, which hotel you stayed at, did they have a shuttle, etc. Thank you.

I also would like to know which hotels and airport previous interviewers chose. I believe laguardia is a lot closer to the campus. Would there be a problem with leaving at 5pm and getting to laguardia for a departing 7pm flight? or should I go 9pm just to be safe?

I received that email on at the end of September. Then I sent my LOR on 10/5 via interfolio..forgot to send them..oops. But they never updated my file. Soo annoying.

Also, if you are leaving from Touro at 5pm for 7pm flight..you would be cutting it way to close to catch your flight. Going to be smack in the middle of rush hour. You could make it but it's unpredictable. I would push your flight till 9 to be safe. You could get dinner an relax and miss rush hour completely.

thanks for the heads up. booked for 9pm. just booked last minute flight.

I stayed at the Aloft Harlem. It was literally around the corner from the school. Not much to do in the area, but there's a subway station about 1-2 blocks away. It was a little pricey, but I stayed there because it was so close to the campus (<10 minute walk), and seeing as how I had no prior experience with NY subway, I wasn't taking any chances.

To anyone who's looking for a hotel, try LaGuardia airport hotel. They are ~$125/night and calls for a taxi to take you to school. Taxi is ~$40 one way. Also if you are adventurous, then you can take the shuttle bus from hotel to airport, and take M60 bus all the way to school. Granted it takes a lot longer, but saves u lot of money.
I took taxi in the morning, and took the bus back for a very late flight. Also, since there were other interviewees staying at the hotel, we took the taxi together and saved some money.
Aloft hotel near the school i hear is good, but that place can get a bit noisy and it's pretty expensive even with Touro discount.

The Touro discount was actually more than the lowest advertised price for me (at the Aloft). Luckily the AAA discount was pretty good, and it included free breakfast.

Aloft is 159 and it looks like I can walk to campus. Any body that interviewed or goes here shed some light on community outreach/service opportunities, clinical or not clinical? Couldn't find much on the net.

Random note: I called to see if they received my stuff and Issa Sow told me they pretty much were closed for the whole week during the week of Sandy and didn't get anything done then. So I guess stuff is getting pushed back. Blahh.

LaGuardia is 30 mins by bus from the campus, it costs 2.25, and drops you off right out front. When I interviewed, I stayed at the LaGuardia Airport Hotel (which, even 2 years ago now, was 125/night.) I took a cab in and back, but if I had to do it over, I would totally go with the bus. It takes just as long as the cab does, and costs next to nothing.

Don't even think about JFK if you have the option to go to LaGuardia. It takes 1.5-2hrs on public transit to get there, or it's a $35 (yellow cab) flat fee to JFK. I know there is also a shuttle from Penn Station, but idk how much it costs. I try to fly from LGA as often as I can.

I'm a 2nd year student, and honestly, if anyone wanted to stay with me the night before, you're more than welcome. I live in Harlem <10mins walk from the school. PM me if you have questions.

Honestly, even though in the website sounds like they are extremely involved in community
outreach programs, I did not feel that this is true in the day of my interview. They have a few programs like a soup something, but nothing major like a free clinic. The school is new so a lot of the things we asked, they simply said they did not have. 🙁

I have a question: for interviewees who have to check out of the hotel in the morning because they have a flight to catch after the interview. Will the school allow you to put your luggage somewhere until the interview is done??

I too would like to know. I am interviewing on Monday, but I would assume they would let you. I just plan to walk to the school from the hotel and bring my luggage with me to campus so I can leave right away after I'm done.

Yes, you can leave your luggage in a room at school until your interview day is over.
