Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finally got the secondary 🙂 🙂!! Hopefully I am not too late. Do they pre-screen very hard?

I would say they do! I submitted my AACOM 9/4 and still waiting the secondary, I called them ~a week ago and was told my app is still under review. Congratulations on getting the secondary, hopefully I will get one soon as well 🙂

Thanks I am sure you will get it soon I waited awhile lol

Not sure if its one wave of invites. I got mine today (coincidentally, the 22nd was one of the dates offered for interview - but I didn't get a date confirmation yet).

Well, then that's good that they sent out another wave of invites. Because according to previous posts, there was probably only one wave sent out the last week of September and no other notices since. Glad that they're starting to get the ball rolling on their interviews. Congrats on getting one!

Thanks a bunch. Good luck on the 22nd 🙂

I'm not sure how hard they pre-screen... My apps just got released to the school late yesterday, and Touro was the second secondary I received (a day later). I'm not sure if they were able to really pre-screen my application within that short period of time.

Same thing happened to me earlier this month, and I have a terrible GPA to boot. If they are actually pre-screening I'd guess they just look at your MCAT Bio score and send secondaries based on that. 😕

So they really did not send the 2nd set of invites yet right????? I think they just filled in a spot that had opened up?

That's possible. Last year I had a terrible BS score (7) and re-took it and moved it up to a 9. Or it may be overall MCAT score as well.

anyone have any interview experience here regarding the panel interview?

I understand it'll be with 2 faculty members, but will it be drastically different from a traditional one on one interview?

wait so they sent a secondary based on the bio score? how highly do they consider that score because it was my highest score out of the 3 🙂

not sure if this is accurate.. i did pretty badly on the bio section and received a secondary and an interview invite.

I'm finally working on the secondary for this school...I've had it for about a month now. I was just too burnt out and busy to work on it. Hopefully I won't be too late if I send it Monday...

The interview consists of yourself and 2 interviewers in a room. Depending on the pairing it can be "good cop-bad cop" or they'll work well together. Over the years it has gone back and forth between open file and closed file. In my case (2 years ago) one of my interviewers had read my file, while the other one hadn't. It's not any different than a one on one interview. I think they do it so that they have more than one person evaluating you and making that decision on whether or not to accept you. Think about it, everyone reads people differently. So in my opinion, I think it's better to have two people rather than one.

Good luck!

I think they do screen because they wouldn't send me a secondary until they had my updated (6 point higher) MCAT score, which I got back in October.

They definitely do screen, we just don't know what that criteria is and how many of us get screened out in the process.

So I just had my interview today. It was open file with 2 faculty members. They ran about an hour over than what was sent out for the schedule/agenda, so I suggest giving yourself some extra time if you want to plan on flying out after your interview. Overall the interview was very laid back and all the faculty seemed very personable. They told us it takes about 6 weeks to get a decision. I hope it's sooner than that because I hate being on pins and needles. >_< If you guys have any specific questions about my experience, feel free to PM me. =)

For your secondary essay for Touro, do you write 2 pages single or double spaced?

I had my interview yesterday. It was very casual with 2 other faculty members. The dean of students and the dean of the medical school came and spoke with us. One of them, I can't remember which, mentioned that everyone in the room had a 28 or better on the MCAT so maybe that is one of the cutoffs they use?

Or s/he may've meant to convey that those interviewing this early are more competitive than average? Who knows...

I hate reading this stuff on SDN and then it stresses me all out (my MCAT is 27). But, I did receive their secondary fairly quickly. It's en route to NY now.

I think the MCAT > or = 28 was something specific for yesterday's group, but it does not mean only candidates with MCAT 28+ will get secondaries, or be interviewed. So no worries!

Hope so 🙂

For the pre-med committee letter of evaluation packet, does that need to be sent directly to the school? My pre-med advisor uploaded it through Virtual Evaluations, but Touro-NY is the only school that hasn't downloaded it. I know the physician letter needs to be sent directly to admissions (which has been done), but it's not that specific about the committee letter on the secondary...

I've contacted Issa Sow, but it seems he's slow to respond (from what I hear).

How do you know if the school has downloaded it?

I interviewed here this past week and must say that I was very impressed with the staff and the facilities, along with the location of this school. I say this having interviewed in several places so far and if accepted I will have an incredibly hard time turning it down.

When you interview here make sure you know the history of osteopathic medicine very well and the role AT Still played, and know exactly where you stand on ethical issues.

There was also two occasions where the deans went around the room and "put you on the spot" to ask a question and share where you're from.

I don't know what the post interview acceptance ratio is, but the dean of admissions did give off the impression that its fairly difficult to get a seat at this school. He was careful not to give away too much information other than the fact that our group all had greater than 29 MCAT scores.

We also had a mock lecture where they showed us the use of Iclicker in daily lectures, which I think will be useful. Top of the line iTunes integrations with lectures as well, which is something I feel all schools will incorporate eventually.
Very helpful to know, thank you!

.

Thanks for sharing~~ it is good to know all this.
Would you elaborate a little bit why it is hard to turn it down, is it because of their curriculum, COMPLEX, USMLE, match results, etc?
thanks

thanks so much again for sharing this info. I am also surprised to see the tuition is lower than that of many other schools. If the rent is reasonable for a med student, it would be super awesome!!
I guess being a new school they might be more attentive/thoughtful for their students than other schools.....which is a good thing.

I am a city person, and I think NYC has A LOT to offer, while the campus/building is not attractive, central park, metropolitan museum, public library, and columbia's medical library >_<, and easy public transportation all these make Touro-NY pretty charming.

Wonder when they will send another round of invites....anyone have a clue about this?

Do you think it's late to send my secondary?
I'm currently working at a hospital in India so I can't even interview until late December/January and I'm wondering if there will still be seats open or if I will make the last cut... I don't want to throw my money away but being in NYC would be awesome
my stats are 3.29Cum, 3.25sci, 34R mcat. gpa is low but i went to cornell undergrad (don't know if that will help)

I was in a similar situation to you 2 years ago. Similar stats, and was in India until mid January. I applied kinda late to Touro (sept-oct maybe?) and got an interview in April, after which I was waitlisted. Luckily they had lots of waitlist movement so I got off the high priority waitlist.

Does this school silently reject? I sent verified on 9/4 and have not heard anything at all, no secondary. I called ~3 weeks ago and they told me my app is still under review...should I call again? or the silence is my answer? Not sure how to proceed. 😕

The tuition may be cheaper, but cost of living sure is not cheap. There are cheap places to live and buy food but looking around for them and finding deals can be a huge time waster.
NYC has plenty to offer, but the city is pretty spread apart and transportation, albeit good, can be pain in the ass for someone very impatient like myself. I been here for 3months now but I had no time to go anywhere outside school, home, and grocery shopping.
Btw, there are some nice public libraries to study, however, many (if not most) of Columbia's libraries cannot be accessed by the public.
With all that said, Touro is a good school and you will get a good education as long as you push yourself. So far, the tests I've had as a first yr have been pretty easy and not difficult to pass...but would you wanna be just a mediocre doc who will get sued for incompetency?
Right now, Touro might not be the 'best', but there is a huge potential. Also, the students here are pretty darn smart ^__^
Good luck to y'all
