Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Apologies if this has been discussed already, but are we generally preferring harlem over middletown, or vice versa?

has anyone heard back from the 10/21 interviews? I forgot how long they said it will to get back to us

OOS, ii about 10 minutes ago, available dates 11/18 and 11/20

ii for me too ! 😀 Canadian, 3.4 gpa 31 mcat, going november 20th 🙂 thrilled !

umm....carribbean schools are for educating physicians to practice in the US. students don't go through ross or sgu curriculum to learn about medicine and practice nowhere. they go in hopes of practicing in the US one day. Well SGU is a little different though because you can practice in the US or the UK.

Im not hating on Touro, by the way. I think it's a great school. Im just saying there is a purpose for every type of medical school that gets rotation spots in the city. The only reason there is a "money deal" is so that students who go abroad and perform exceptionally well (because most carrib people do not make it or don't get rotations or receive a delay in getting rotations) can actually do rotations somewhere. Im glad that SGU has that for their students. It shows they aren't just taking money thousands of students for no reason.

by the way, the only reason the money thing happened was because NY was not producing enough primary care physicians so thats how it happened in the first place. Yes duh DO's emphasize primary care. Im just saying no one was ousting touro thats just what happened they needed sgu to fill a need at the time.

Also....not totally random med students clearly.....
To be eligible for the program, applicants have to have a permanent address in New York City and must meet one of the following criteria: to have graduated from a city high school; to have lived within the city for the last five years, or to be employed or have a parent employed by the city or the hospitals corporation for at least five years.

All that sounds nice and all but the fact is that these schools have incoming classes of 800+ for one sole reason..to make money. The NYC rotation sites is just a nice marketing tool. I have worked in a few major hospitals in the past few years in NYC and many doctors have told me their carrib students are generally horrible compared to the other students that rotate there. I mean, they are sharing hospitals with top MD schools so I am not so surprised about that. Obviously there might be some amazing students, but for the most part, no. No hate on them though, it was the schools fault for either providing a poor education or admitting some of those students in the first place.

received ii on Thursday, interviewing next Wednesday. Does anyone know what kind of questions they ask and if the staff is laid back?

Use the "interview feedback" section of this website. It's incredibly helpful.
Reading previous years' threads, I've seen mixed accounts. Some people reported leisurely, conversational interviews. Others reported being grilled a bit on their application. I'm guessing that it depends on who is in your panel. I guess, just know your application (dates, activities, scope, etc.) very well prepare for the questions on the "interview feedback" section.

I wasn't aware there was such a section. I'll have to go find it. Thanks!

Just got an acceptance email! I interviewed back on October 26th! I chose the Harlem campus!

I got wait listed . I guess it's ok since this wasn't my first choice but I hope I get in somewhere

I got waitlisted as well. Neither a rejection nor a acceptance. Interviewed on October 21.

For those wait listed, did you think your interviews went well? Attempting to gauge my chances.

I just withdrew my app from further consideration, opening a spot for interview on 11/18 to those who want to reschedule. Good luck to all!

I think my interview went well, but you never know what they want. Private Message me if you want.

I was put on the waitlist as well. I'm kind of bummed because I felt I did well during the interview.

waitlisted as well 🙁
Quote from the email: "I am pleased to inform you that you have been placed on the Wait List for Fall 2014 entering class." LOL it must be a pleasure for them to put people on the waitlist. Anyway, I already got into my top choice, so I will withdraw my application. One less person to compete for a seat.

This was my number one school after the interview. I want to send a letter of intent, but I think it's too early in the cycle for that. Does anyone know when the waitlist starts moving?

Accepted today. Felt like my interview went so so (I was extremely underslept). I will most likely be going to a different school so hopefully one of you guys on the wait list will get my spot!

I was just browsing the website and apparently the Class of 2017 MCAT average is 30.8. You can find it under "Student Demographics."

Anxious for interview invite. This is my first-choice school. Received confirmation email that secondary was received yesterday (11/12). OOS 3.76 sGPA, 3.70 cGPA, 3.91 graduate GPA, MCAT 24 (BS 8, PS 6, VR 10). Published 1st author in medical journal, lots of DO shadowing, 1,000+ hours patient intakes and vitals, 24 hr/week volunteer research assistant.

Congrats!!! Mind sharing your GPA and MCAT breakdown?

sGPA 3.07, cGPA 3.25
10V/11PS/9BS

Interview dates were 11/18 or 11/20. Luckily the school is a few stops along the subway 🙂

Kinda low MCAT so it is hard to say. Any past experience working in poor urban areas?

I interned for a year doing intakes with a psychologist to determine claimants' eligibility for disability benefits. A lot of these people were underserved in healthcare.

I don't think you need to worry. You have a good GPA and great ECs. In terms of MCAT, your bio score is decent, which I hear is what this school really looks at anyways. There's still time!

Does anyone have any recommendation about how to get to the school and which hotel to stay? I'm from California and I just received an interview offer yesterday. It will be my first time going to New York so any recommendation about which flight to take will be help to me too.

Accepted - Middletown Campus.

Interviewed 10/28

GPA: 3.7
MCAT: 31 (11/10/10)
VFOOS: Very far out of state....Canadian.
