Touro COM - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I apologize in advance if this question has been answered: When printing your secondary app, how do you make it so that the drop down boxes show the full text body of your response? I.e., if you have a had a misdemeanor charge and explained it, the printed format gets cut off after about 3 lines. Thanks!

In the email accompanying the secondary it explains that if things don't fit, it is perfectly acceptable to write that section in by hand.

Just to let you guys know - when I was at the interview, I asked a question regarding how many people they interview and how many people they accept. The director said they get over 6000 applications, they interview 900, and accept 140 or so to each campus.

Finally - can somebody figure out how they accept multiple MCAT scores? Do they take the last score? The highest score? Or the highest score from each section?

Wow... If they really do receive 6000 applications that would mean they make $1,200,000 per year from the secondary fees alone. I assumed they were receiving half that number because it is still a pretty new school. Apparently location is a bigger draw then I knew. I know it is for me. I live 15 minutes away🙂 I know the community well and would love to keep my apartment.

Noted. I missed this detail and ended up typing in "see attachment" and copied and pasted the question separately with a response. I hope they find that acceptable as I have already dropped it in the mail. But thanks for the reply.

Sorry, I don't think I recalled correctly (I was on very little sleep the night before). I remember 6000 submitted their primary, and I believe they sent secondaries to 2000 and then interviewed 900.

That makes more sense to me. Thanks for the info.

To be honest I think you handled it in the more professional manner. That is what I did and then I noticed the email after I dropped it in the box as well. Don't sweat the small stuff.

So they finally charged my credit card today. Almost a full month after submitting my secondary. I'm just glad I don't have to constantly check my account to make sure I have enough to cover it. 🙄

😎 Rescheduled my interview from 12/11 to 1/22. Hopefully doesn't come back to bite me. Any preparation and/or interview tips would be greatly appreciated.

my interview group has an interviewer that really liked OMM, so explaining your experience with it could help during the interview.

Really REALLY know your application, especially if you have been out of undergrad for a couple years and listed stuff from it on your app because they might ask you fairly detailed questions about those experiences. It kind of depends which group of interviewers you are placed with, like primary care (DOs), administration, basic sciences (professors), etc. I imagine that they ask you about what they are most interested in and whatever is on your application is fair game. Definitely be prepared for why Harlem if that is the campus that you are choosing. I talked about experiences I had volunteering with urban, underserved populations (in Harlem specifically), but anything like that I'm sure would help immensely. Check out the interview feedback page if you haven't already, because most of the other questions I was asked were listed there.

By the way, I thought that I choked because I really floundered over the specifics of a part of my research from 4 years ago but I just got my acceptance email today, so as long as you recover well after a tough question, they might give you a pass. Touro received/processed my secondary on 10/14, I got my ii on 11/13 and interviewed on 11/25. 3.62 cGPA, 3.46 sGPA, 31 MCAT, non-traditional applicant.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I have similar stats and am also non-traditional, so I'm hoping for some love from this school as well. What are your overall thoughts on the school? Do you think you will be accepting? Also, what date did they give you until to put down your deposit?

And congrats on your acceptance!

I love the location. Harlem (and New York) is a lot of fun. I went in to the interview really excited and hoped that I would be blown away, but I wasn't very impressed. I hesitate to say that the interview day wasn't well put together, but I do believe it could have been better organized. We spent about 2 hours sitting in a room with fellow interviewees just waiting and the day went long. Also, although they showed us a video highlighting the Middletown campus (this one: ), there wasn't a cohesive presentation describing the Harlem campus: the curriculum, housing, student activities, matching/COMLEX passing rates, etc. My group was only set up to speak with 1 student who gave us a tour, but because of the limited study space available at Touro, two other students were studying in a room we entered and did an impromptu Q&A. All that being said, the faculty and students that I met were very friendly.

I think I will be declining the offer. I have until January 10th to decide, but I believe that my interview (11/25) was the last date that had the Jan 10th cut-off, after that it would be something like two or three weeks.

Fun tidbit of information I just found out, Dr. Jerry Cammarata ( the guy speaking in the video posted above) was the first father to be allowed paternity leave back in the 70's. Also, he was an extra in the Godfather !

That is hilarious. 😀

Hello everyone I am curious in learning what the average incoming gpa for the matriculating class was? Do we expect it to go up next year and will it be the same for middletown? I ask because I will be applying next cycle and would like to know where I stand. Thank you in advance.

Any interview invites this week yet?

I received an interview invite on Tuesday, 12/10. My interview is schedule for this upcoming Monday, 12/16. I live in the area, so I didn't need to make travel plans or anything like that. I submitted my secondary in early November (in-person), with my Doctor's LOR arriving probably in mid-November. I have pretty competitive stats (33, ~3.6 GPA).

Seems like average gpa is 3.4ish and from the communications I had before the average mcat is 30-31.

That's amazing. Please, please someone ask him about this at the next interview date.

On a side note, I love this school lol 😛 I really hope I get in off the waitlist ASAP !

An interview invitation would sure be a wonderful birthday present this year... hint hint hint.

Does anyone know if it would be helpful to shadow a student here? Would it up my chances at all?

Does anyone know if it would be helpful to shadow a student here? Would it up my chances at all?

I don't know... I guess it would show them you were certain you wanted to attend and it would give you plenty to talk about at the interview. Other than that, shadowing students seems a bit pointless to me.

Does anyone have the 2013 match list they could point me to? I know they offered it at the end of my interview on Monday but I forgot to request it.

has any with around a 3.4/26 heard anything back yet from here?

Out of curiosity: How long did it take for Touro to cash your check when you mailed in your secondary? I mailed in last Wednesday and has yet to be cashed so I am assuming my envelope is in a heaping pile of applications.

Shadowing a student won't up your chances. There are a ton of people applying here and whether you shadow a student or not will not give you an edge in the slightest. It would be more for you to decide if you like the school or not. One thing I know they like is high MCAT (30+). They must have mentioned our class MCAT average to us 100 times over this past semester. I am very confident that they will continue to admit students with higher MCATS just to keep raising their average...especially bio section. The school is competitive enough so they can choose. I know of plenty of people who got in with sub-30 MCATS though. But in general, high MCAT is good for them.

Touro takes a while with things. I think there office is understaffed, personally. I would call them every few days for an update. For some people living by paycheck to paycheck, it can be pretty important to know when a check is cashed.

In regards to match lists, they don't mean much..for most schools. You match depending on how well YOU do. A general trend you can follow though is if you went to school around the area, you probably have a slightly higher chance of matching in the area just because you were at the hospitals around there. Touro is also very new and things change a lot every year so it is hard to make any decisions based off of that.

Let me know if you have anymore questions

I agree with the poster above in how school's match list and the residency you will land don't correlate as much as it seems. If you are able to put in tremendous amount of individual effort, you'll match into above average residency no matter what school you attend. I believe Touro sent out 2013 match list via email to the student body as opposed to posting them on the website.

About 3 weeks for me.

I second this, anybody have the 2013 match list in hand?

I have it somewhere on my computer at home. I found it once on SDN, but it took forever to find so I saved it. I'll upload it after work.

Although, as mentioned numerous times before, match lists do not necessarily predict how well you'll do/where you'll end up. How hard you work in med school does. That said, it's still nice to look at 😉

It would be great if you could share. I need something to occupy my time while I wait for the decision.

Note: This is only a partial list. I'm sure there's a complete list out there, but this is what my friend (current student) sent me. In any case, have a looksie.

That list is what comes up if you google it. I was also looking for a more comprehensive match list, but was unsuccessful.

I had my interview on Monday (12/16) and they told us we should be hearing back within a week! So for those of you still waiting post-interview, you might hear back soon as well.

No news so far. I interviewed December 2 and this coming Monday December 23 will make it three weeks. I really hope they give a decision by then. They will send the decision by email right? I'm tempted to check my regular mail even though I know they said email.

I was wait listed but I'm withdrawing my app. Got accepted to Nova! Good luck everyone. NYC will always have my heart....just not for the next ~ 4 years 😉

I think we should make it a goal not to continue quoting the entire match list in responses.😉

Or you could not click "Click to expand"?

To be fair, the phone app, at least the Android one, just gives you EVERYTHING, without the "click to expand" option.

I'm not actually complaining though, because that would open me up to a #firstworldproblems attack lol

For the people who interviewed on December 2 do we get our decisions out today?

I doubt they will be working today. I thought most schools would be closed up for the holidays. My guess is nothing will be looked at again until the new year.

Same here... and good point.
