U Minnesota c/o 2017

I applied to Minnesota but have heard nothing from them, and no idea when they even start sending out interview or rejection letters :scared

They typically send out interview invites the first or second week of January. I received a confirmation email from them that they got all my stuff and I think it mention early January as when they would be in contact.

yeah, they start sending interviews beginning of January. Minnesota is one of my top schools!

I'm applying there as well, but haven't heard anything since the "here's what the rough timeline is" e-mail in October. Hopefully no news is good news. I applied there last year, got rejected without an interview, and did a file review. I did all the suggested improvements (at least the ones I could), so hopefully they'll be kinder to me this time around. :scared: :xf:

Yep, no news is good news. At least, it's not bad news. 🙂

They don't send out anything until fairly early January.

If you can find someone who still has their interview email from last year, I bet this year's would come out within a business day or two of that. They've got the scheduling down to a fine art, and my impression of the director of admissions from my various interactions with her is that she is a highly competent, meticulous planner. You can bet that if they feel it worked well last year they'll repeat it precisely.

Standard disclaimer about not working in admissions applies.....

Oh. And looking one more step ahead, I got my offer Feb 16. But last year they were able to do it even a few days faster. (Yes, I have kept my admissions offer email.)

I will be printing mine and framing it.

Anybody else obsessively checking their email waiting to hear from MN??? I'm guessing it will be soon since last year it was the 5th and the year before it was the 6th. Nothing to do but sit here and wait.... :corny:

I've been checking mine like crazy too! I'm hoping we hear something either today or Monday

Nada! Keep checking the inbox. 🙂

I checked my email like crazy since it looks like the past 2 years they sent the invites out on the first Thursday of January. Would love to have some good news to start the weekend with!

Are there specified days for IS and OOS student interviews?

I swear my heart rate doubles whenever I check my inbox and there's a new message. :scared: So far nothing.

So I know they don't require fall transcripts, but does that mean they won't accept them? I did really well in my fall classes and that boosted my gpa a bit, so I'd kind of like to send those along . . .

I would reread the e-mail. Same here on boosting my GPA this fall. 😉

If you read their website it says that don't require them and would rather not receive them too. I wish they did accept them...that would help me out too!

Rejected again. Crap.

Rejected as well. 3 rejections in 2 days... awesome....

Just got an interview invite as well, although I am thinking I may withdraw my App since I have an acceptance to my in state school. Congrats and good luck everyone!

I am thinking of doing the same thing. I got in my instate and don't want to spend money flying to minnesota :-( I did really like their program but good luck to everyone!!

CONGRATS Maschka and stressedvet!!!!!!!! That's fantastic!!!! c= c= c=

I am a New Jerseyian (forever OOS...lol), but am really looking forward to interviewing at UMinn! I've never been to Minnesota, I am so so excited to see the city and the school!

Got my rejection email. Did not make the academic requirements, though my GRE score was higher than the average and my last 80 units was right in the range. Oh well. Kind of upset they did not look at anything else though. Actually sort of bitter since they have the most expensive application fee and don't even require a supplemental. The least they could do is look at the entire application.

Oh well, after being wait listed for CSU and Oregon, getting a definitive answer is much appreciated. Just got to stay positive! :luck:

They probably did look at your whole app. When I applied last cycle, my numbers were on the lower end of the acceptable range, but they was still just barely good enough to get me past the first stage and have everything else looked at. They just list the numbers on the e-mail because they feel like it.

I'm just mad now. I did pretty much everything they told me to do, and got the same result as last year. I've already scheduled a file review for next week and someone will have some explaining to do. 😡

How did you schedule a file review? Just emailed and asked?

Yep, just called up and made the appointment. They like you to call them for some reason. It's the number on their contact page. I don't know why but they don't schedule that stuff over e-mail.

Just received email for interview :love
I am an OOS Applicant

I know that at Minnesota you can apply for residency after one year after meeting certain requirements (Minnesota driver's license, working so many hours, etc). Does anyone (especially a current student) know how difficult it is to actually be approved and get residency for the second through fourth years? I really like the program/school, but the OOS tuition is outrageous.

I'm an in state resident, but they told other people that asked at information sessions that it is difficult to get residency. They said people have done it, but you really need to show that you are not just here in the state for school.

I got an OOS invite, and was looking over in the interview feedback section to see what type of interview it is, but all the questions are "blocked by school." Does anyone know whether its closed or open file, behavioral or other? Also, is it correct that most interviews are an hour or longer?

I got an interview too! I'm OOS.
The Minnesota interview is behavioral, about one hour, and with two interviewers.

I'm IS from the get-go, so I haven't gone through it, but I think if you are OOS and want to gain IS it can be important that you a) have a job here, and b) stay here during the summers.

I think they may or may not have looked at your file, so it's not definitively open OR closed. You should plan to approach the interview as if they do not have background information. I don't have inside information on this question, but I know at the beginning of my interview, I specifically asked "So that I know how much background information to provide, can I ask if you've reviewed my file or not?" The answer was "assume we don't know anything," which is pretty ambiguous. Somewhere along the way I vaguely recall asking someone who does interviews (a professor, I think), and I thought he said that sometimes they review them and sometimes not. Probably just depends on free time. 😛

Interviews are designed to go up to an hour. Some may go over, but they shouldn't go much over because of scheduling. Mine was significantly less than an hour.

Thanks so much! I get a little more nervous when I can't see any previous questions before hand. Would you recommend renting a car to get around if I'm flying in?

Not sure I can answer that for you. I know that the school will make arrangements to help you get to/from school for your interview/activities. At least, I assume so, because they still look for some of us to help drive people.

So I don't think you NEED one. That said, if you wanted to drive around and get a feel for the area ... go out on Friday/Sat night ... whatever - it would be useful to have one.

As far as questions, we are asked not to talk about the specific questions used in the interview, but I believe it's fair to talk about how I prepared.

1) Google "behavioral interview questions." With a quick half hour research you can find alllll sorts of lists. Compile them into one big list. Weed out the stupid or redundant ones.

2) Find somebody you like, offer to buy them coffee if they'll listen to you blather for a few hours.

3) Go to the coffeeshop and have them ask you questions. Answer them just like it was a real interview. Get their feedback specifically on your pacing and non-verbal communication; they probably aren't qualified to give you feedback on the value of your actual answer.

That's pretty much what I did. Had my wife 'interview' me at Starbucks. It was pretty darn amazing how many questions in the actual interview were identical - or nearly so - to ones I had found doing just a tiny bit of research.

Don't attempt to memorize your answers. Your goal in practicing is to reflect back on your life and recall moments or relationships that will be useful to draw from during the interview. You want a 'stash' of life moments fresh in your brain, not canned answers. Don't be afraid to use 'little' things; every answer doesn't have to be some major life-changing event so long as it directly answers the question.

Hope that helps! Relax and it will be fine. You're going to find that everyone is welcoming and friendly.

Thanks so much for the help! my fiance is a coffee buff, so i'm sure he'll go for your suggestion. It'll definitely get me more comfortable with the type of questions and with answering in a way in which I can convey my experiences. I'm super excited about the interview, and not just because its a great school. This may seem like a silly reason to be excited...but i've never lived anywhere where it really snowed, in any sort of substantial way.

Hey, so my bf and I rent a 1-bedroom apartment about 15 minutes from the vet school. I know the interview dates are still TBD, but if you find yourself needing a place to stay, my couch is open as long as you don't mind sharing the living room with 2 fancy rats (in a cage). I would be able to drive you to and from campus, and I don't mind showing you around Minneapolis either 😀

PM me if you're interested!

Also, I've got a 7 month kitten who'll probably be shy at first but will eventually warm up to you. She might try to sleep on top of you at night, but we can lock her in the bedroom with us so you can get a good night's sleep.

I got an interview invite! Was not expecting one since my in-state and what I thought would be my 'safety school' (VMRCVM) straight-up rejected me. Thank you Minnesota!!

Any insight as to how many people who get interview invites actually get accepted?? I tried looking online briefly for some stats, but couldn't find anything.

Hi everyone! I just called the school asking if they have a VetStay type program where prospectives can stay with current students for the night before the interview. Unfortunately the answer was no. I know this is a weird question, but would any current students be willing to take in a female, food animal medicine person for a night? 🙂 Feel free to PM me. Thanks!!
