The actual campus itself probably doesn't have many animals or vets but I don't think there is any campus that has a particularly large animal population available? It is pretty difficult to get volunteer hours/experience at teaching hospitals, most people gain their experience from private practice veterinarians. I would guess that LA pobably has hundreds (thousands ?) of veterinarians.

Personally, I think it would probably be more difficult to get varied experience here in Davis but I've never worked in LA before.

Another thing to keep in mind - both of these schools are difficult to get into, as a freshman, so it might be worth applying to both anyways.

Scrubs: Color is the only thing that matters. The book store carries a few options (including one with a Davis logo embroidered on it), but I got mine in Sacramento. If you prefer a fitted top, I'd highly recommend "Grey's Anatomy" brand. I know it sounds lame, but I get compliments on it all the time. I only own two sets right now, and I think that's sufficient. There are very few times you're mandated to wear scrubs - namely, when you're in the VMTH or Gourley for animal handling labs. In Anatomy dissection lab, you can either wear scrubs, or street clothing with your white coat over. Most people elect to wear scrubs, but since I want to keep mine nice, I opt for the latter.

As for boots, you're probably thinking of xtratuffs. We wear the boots much less often than the scrubs, even, so it isn't a huge deal. In retrospect I wish I had bought xtratuffs since most of my experience is zoo/wildlife related, and will continue to be so. However, I wanted to try the boots on before buying them, so I just went with the convenience of the bookstore rather than worrying about buying online. If you already have rainboots, might as well save the money and just use those (and look cuter than everyone else with ugly brown/black ones).

I choose to go the lab coat route because I am too lazy to change 😀

Uh oh, what's up with the boots? I have nerve damage in my feet and wear custom shoes so I can walk. With those shoes, I can do anything I'm supposed to do, but if I'm required to wear "normal people" shoes, I'll be in some serious pain awfully fast. What are the requirements for boots? How quickly do we need to have them? And is there a good cobbler in Davis? :xf:

I have two and my butt is too big for them now. But neither pair are ceil, sorry. 🙂

I've found if you shop online you can get scrubs for almost 50% off. I've never worn Grey's Anatomy, but there are some other brands that make cheaper and cute fitted tops.

and I know how you feel moosenanny, I'm always brushing off the hair on my scrubs at work and using the lint roller thing, but that probably also has a lot to do with dealing with the general public and the vibe we give off to clients.

Maybe I'll get a pair that I can wear for labs that will get dirty and another nicer pair for days at the VMTH...

Also, I'm going up to look for housing in Davis tomorrow, woot! so excited.

Yeah, the pants didn't work well for me, so I just got the top and then mixed-and-matched with other (cheaper!) bottoms.

I'm worried less so about hair and lint, and more thinking of formalin/formaldehyde and dissection goo

We wear boots whenever we are in the barns (working with horses or large animals). For us, this isn't very often - a few times per quarter at most. With the new curriculum, I'm not sure if that'll be changing . . .

That being said, I wouldn't worry too much/at all, since you can always ask for plastic sleeves to wear over your normal close-toed shoes instead. Especially if you have special footwear, I can't see why this would be a problem at all. Maybe call the school just to be sure, but honestly I think you'd be able to get away with always just wearing the plastic shoe covers and you should be fine. No need to stress!

Those plastic slip-covers are way too slippery for me, especially when the floor gets wet (which it always does). I'd call or email the admin office and talk to them about it - and the more time you give them to find a solution, the better! Don't bring it up the day before your first Gourley lab 🙂

right..I just meant that if I'm anal about hair I can only imagine freaking out about all the other nasty stuff getting on them.:laugh:

Thanks, moosenanny and cleo227! I have definitely been in situations where wearing plastic was the best solution, and if that's an acceptable back-up plan, I'm sure I'll do fine. (I should post pictures of me on a tide pools field trip. The contraptions I wrapped over my feet and ankles...! :laugh: But it all worked out.) Thank you so much! 😎 I had started to get worried!
 
The best pants are the cherokee ones. I don't care that they cost like $10 more than the cheap ones - they fit, they're long enough so that I don't look like I'm about to be in a flood, and they have tons of pockets! Pocketless short scrub pants are a scourge upon humanity.

I like wearing scrubs because then I don't have to pick out clothes to wear for the day. God knows I could not care less about looking fashionable in vet school 😉

I personally think that UCLA being a "city campus" without animals is a ridiculous statement. We do have the LA zoo where I got school credit for doing research at while at UCLA and.... you are very close to the water which means there are marine research and marine rehab opportunities. And we have tons of wildlife in the santa monica mountains. In addition there are toooooons of small animal hospitals and shelters and pet care businesses where you can get experience. That being said....UCLA does not have an animal science major but I don't think that makes a difference. My major was bio and they offer animal physio. Most science classes are animal based anyways because the research has been done on animals rather than humans. We also have a couple amazing professors in the bio dept that do canine research.

As far as going toDavis....I do know people that have gone to Davis for undergrad because they want to go to Davis for vet school. This is pretty common and in a way I think this makes it harder to get into Davis vet. There are a ton of UCD animal science. A lot get accepted but I also know quite a few UCD undergrads that didn't.

I think you should go to the school 1) that you get into and 2) that you feel most comfortable at. Both are really great schools and it doesn't matter is one has an animal science major and the other one doesnt

Even the extra small cherokee pants are HUGE on me....I love radiance scrubs but they are hard to find, especially in the right color. boo.

ETA: a little pre-emptive but there's a pretty good sale going on online, looks like I'm gonna pick up a few pairs.

Going back to a comment from the previous page-textbooks. I am a person that does Bette if I have textbooks to reference to learn stuff. Just in case my bug sub isn't a text book learner, would someone who does like textbooks care to share which books they like having on hand for first year?

Is the bookstore for the vet school seperate from the main bookstore at the MU?

I am so looking forward to wearing scrubs to school when I'm feeling lazy! That's one thing I mis about not working at a clinic anymore (dress code for me right now is mostly slacks and a blazer).
 
Scrubs are things that you will definitely need at some point. If you go for good solid colors (or in this case, ciel) you will use them later on I'm sure.

Now... you might have issued with the 'vet school 15'... so don't go overboard. 😉
 
I like the Miller's book and the Miller Light. The histology book was handy at times and the cardio phys book was good....all of the rest I haven't really used.

I wear scrubs every single (work) day already so I'm interested to see if my preferences change while I'm in vet school. There's nothing as comfy as a pair of scrubs and an oversized hoodie! I am going to buy my scrubs from from book store most likely.

I bought a pair of grey's anatomy scubs. I don't know if they are all made out of the same fabric - but the ones that I have are like hair MAGNETS. They also make me look like I'm 5 months pregnant but not everyone has a little extra to love like I do. 🙂

As for textbooks - I will probably be buying all the main ones. I won't use half of them but it's a safety blanket thing for me. I bought and kept all of my books from undergrad as well. (the biology ones)
 
heylodeb - me too! (keeping undergrad text books). They have saved my butt more than once too. In my upper division genetics course the text book was terrible and I didn't understand the professor at ALL. I passed the class only because I was able to look up the info is one of my other biology texts I had kept from another class. I'm a visual person and sometimes reading something in a book is what it takes to cement it on my brain.

BTW - I just read my earlier post. LOL. Stupid itouch.......it didn't help that I someone breathing down my back asking me if I was STILL on SDN!

I'll probably wait to buy scrubs. I used to make my own tops, so not sure what brands are going to fit me best. The pant bottoms are always a problem - I'm a "fat-bottomed girl" with a tiny waist. *sigh*. Any good physical store locations in the sac area that sell scrubs that I could try on first to see which brands fit me best?

Theres a shop close to the med center on stockton blvd...haven't actually gone in though I am tempted everyday I drive by...its on the right hand side right before the UCD med center entrance
 
I went up to Davis to check out apts today. Saw 9 complexes in 6 hours. I am SPENT. My ideal place would be stonegate - really nice inside, close to vet med, they are probably the most pet friendly (no pet rent, up to 3 animals, 75 lb weight limit). But another place in east davis is calling my name with an awesome deal on rent for a 2 br. If anyone needs more info on: Ellington, Cambridge House, Renaissance Park, Silverstone, 5th Ave place, or Cranbrook Apts, send me a PM.

Edit: Also, a lot of place still do have availability that's not on the Sept-Aug schedule, for anyone that's worried about that.

FYI - a LOT of vet students live at Stonegate (at least that is my impression)

They were actually the cheapest one bedroom, pet friendly apartments that I found in Davis, which is why I moved here. I do know that rent has increased since then (2 years ago), so maybe they are overpriced now.

My main gripes are that the office staff is constantly turning over. I swear, every time I go in there there's someone new that I've never met. I worked out my lease with a woman I really liked, and when I went in to sign everything she had "moved on" and I had to work with someone else, and some things in my lease changed. Today we got a notice about 2 people "moving on" and 2 new people. It's just a bad sign and I've never felt comfortable with anyone in the office. My other gripe is that a lot of undergrads have moved in, and it can get *really* loud here, there are even occasional weekday parties. Also, it took maintenance 3 weeks once to fix my A/C. Yeah, I'm just over it. I'll be moving to Sacramento come this summer.
 
I was reading on Davis Wiki about the different pet friendly complexes near campus, and very few have decent reviews. So many seem to have the changing management issues, or are overpriced, or thin walls, etc. I heard from a recent grad that Stonegate and Hanover were good. Current students have any recommendations on good complexes to live in? Teatime, what were your thoughts on the complexes you visited? Thanks!

If you only want to live with one other person an apartment is probably better, but if you're willing to live with a total of 3-5 people houses are a way more affordable way to go in Davis and may provide you more options in the way of #/size of pets = an issue if living with a bunch of pet loving vet students. I've heard good things about Stonegate, Silverstone is nice but a little further away (if I'm thinking of the right complex) and a bit more expensive because it's off the Davis grid and you have to pay for water/sewage separately in addition to the typical electrical/gas/internet, and have heard terrible things about renaissance park especially in terms of ac/heat and service requests. Also a note from living in Davis apartments during undergrad, don't trust a complex when they say free internet, every time I've tried to use the "free" internet the connections have always been spotty, and it always seems to crash when you most need it to research for a paper or before finals, in the end my roommates and I have always opted to pay for our own internet service to make sure we have it when we needed it most, just something to keep in mind when comparing costs.

I would prefer a house over an apartment and am good living with a few more people, but looking on craigslist, all I'm really seeing is apartments and houses that are much further away. Is there a better place to look? Also worried about the whole needing a lease starting in August bit..

Actually, Silverstone has changed their policy on w/s/g. It is now included in their rent. I also thought silverstone was really nice but they were unable to tell me about availability for july and only had a 2 br to look at (2 br there are out of my price range) so I'm going with El Macero which has an unbeatable rent of 1088 for a 2br/2ba and a definite move in date, and seems like a pretty quiet complex farther away from school.

Stonegate also seemed really nice, but again was uncertain about availability for that time frame (i have to get outta my current place by July 31st) although they did say they would try to work with current tenants who might be interested in moving out sooner/later. One thing though is that it's right behind Arlington Farm, which I hear is notorious for being a noisy, obnoxious complex. I think nyanko said something about wanting to bomb the place or something...? ha. In the end the price was a little higher than other 1 br. but they are very pet friendly. I saw multiple dogs/cats just in the 20 minutes I was there. Also, while it would be close to vet med for me, it would be farther away for my boyfriend who will probably end up getting a job in Sac.
 
Did everyone get a letter of acceptance via snail mail as well as email? I only received an email

I'm going to print my acceptance letter out on nice paper and pretend it came in the mail. 😉

Going to measure my new apartment today with the hubby. I can't wait to move there. 3 months before we can! WAY too long!

Just my 2 cents on housing: I have an apartment at DaVinci Court apartments, they offer 4, 3, and 2 bedroom apartments (some studios: though there is a waitlist for those as well as the 2 and 3 bedrooms) but if you get a 4 bedroom with roommates the rent is fairly reasonable...they are a little more expensive since this is one of the newest complexes in Davis. The management is amazing...they offer socials with food and cookies...they also are very strict on parties (we have a security guard as well). There are parties every once in a while since well we do live in a college town but they are pretty predictable like the friday when school starts (for undergrads) and picnic day. They also allow pets. I have my small dog and I know others have birds, fish and a rabbit. I would prefer to have more vets in the complex for company 🙂 we are in south davis on the bike path to downtown Davis. The bus is also very close as are grocery stores and some restaurants. Bike to the vet campus would be about 15 to 20 mins (might be less because its a straight path with minimal car traffic) and driving is 10 mins.

Also for those involved with equines: I ride over at Sunfire equestrian. The trainer offers lessons in hunter/jumper/dressage and you can lease ponies at very reasonable rates. Many vet students ride at the center so if anyone is interested its a nice little place to ride!🙂
 
Someone just posted a question in the UC Davis c/o 2014 page asking about chances in getting off the waitlist. I'll go ahead and pre-emptively share what I know here, assuming the person is going to ask here too. Someone I know who is on the alternate list contacted the admissions office; they told her that the class this year was over-accepted by 14 students. So, add 14 to your waitlist number, and that's how many people need to turn down spots before you'll be accepted. There are a few people in my class from off the waitlist - their information can be found toward the middle/end of the c/o 2014 thread, if anyone is curious . . . Good luck to those out there still waiting!
 
Does anyone know much about the alternate list? How great are the chances of getting picked off of that? Do people often decline acceptance to UC Davis? Are there ways to better your chances of getting picked off of the list (i.e. appealing to the admissions committee, having someone write another recommendation for me...)?

I just found out that I have put on the alternate list and I'm feeling a little like I'm on a roller coaster hanging out in limbo of the admissions process.

Any info helps!

Is anyone going to Pharm night that they just posted on the facebook page? I *could* go, so I'm considering it.....but of course (like I'm back in middle school) I have to see who else is going *first*. LOL. I already e-mailed the person that posted the annoucement and it doesn't sound like some horrible scary mixer excuse!
