UC Davis c/o 2017 Applicants!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats Washbucket and Falina! 👍
I just got that email too...my heart was pounding out of my chest. I was like "oh no...rejection email maybe!" Are you guys instate or OOS applicants?

In state.
And I'll post in the official interview thread once I schedule it. The dates fall during finals week for me, and it will be tricky trying to move the tests around (assuming that my professors would let me take a final early because of interviewing for vet school :xf: ).

Received the invite by portal today too!!! 😀 So excited! Congrats everybody!

I got an interview also!!! I am so excited for everyone!!!!!! Good luck : } :luck::luck::xf:

I think I was giggling like a little girl!!

I'm new to this network. I didn't even realize this existed until I was trying to find uc-davis interview questions. I'm an OSS and just got offered an interview for the VSTP! Congrats to everyone else on their interviews!

Congratulations and welcome!!

I got waitlisted... 🙁

Any one know what the chances of anyone giving up their Davis interview is? Especially so early on when no one knows what other offers they've got. :\

Congrats everyone who got an invite!

People who haven't heard anything yet: my sympathies, friends. I hope whatever you hear you hear soon, to minimize the dreadful waiting.

Welcome! You should post your interview on the official interview thread!

I'm applying to the VSTP as well. What PhD program are you in/applying to? I'm going for Genetics.

Question: Do you think they did it all in one go? I would think so if people are being waitlisted.

I didn't get an answer either way. I suppose anything is possible...

I'm applying for Comparative Pathology.

How are you all preparing for the MMI format??

I saw several videos on Youtube, but it still seems like each applicant varies a LOT. The way they think, the way they approach it, etc. Are you all going to buy books or videos? (Do such things exist?!)

I just counted how many interview spots have not yet been scheduled. As of this morning, it's a whopping 67! So, don't jump to conclusions just yet 🙂 I'm sure there are many other factors at play and that a good ending will come out of it for you.

I think those spots are still open because people just haven't scheduled their interview. Pretty sure if you haven't heard anything by now, you've been rejected.

Yes at this point I'm thinking no news is going to be bad news

Ok guys. Last year I got notified the DAY before the interview orientation (non existent this year). I know it sucks, but keep calm and carry on. It took them a very long time to send those guys out. Might be different this year though.....( hate that that's my go to phrase).

Btw saw the admissions lady carrying a HUGE binder labeled admissions yesterday.

Does anyone know how many people are on the interview wait list?

Vowing to not be a downer 🙂

After all, there are a lot of other schools I applied to.

I am an out of state applicant to UC Davis, and I just booked my flight and hotel for my interview! It looks like I will have the day before my interview free to spend in Davis - does anyone have any suggestions regarding places/things I should check out while I'm there?

I'm planning to look up advice on how to make an 'elevator pitch,' and then think about pitches for why I have each attribute that makes a good vet - compassion, communication skills, critical thinking, quick thinking, etc. etc. etc.

Then, I'm going to think about responses for all the news stories I find in the AVMA SmartBriefs I get from now to the interview - a lot of them have moral questions in them and such. I'm also going to look over all the promotional info Davis has on the website and think about how I relate to all of the selling points they bring up and such.

I'll probably ask friends/family to give me little mock interviews, too, just to get comfortable. If I'm really freaking out, I might ask some of my improv comedy/improv theatre friends to do improv games with me. I figure that the most important thing for the interview is appearing comfortable and being able to just go with whatever question they throw at us.

Congrats to those who have gotten interviews! *fingers crossed* for those who haven't heard!

So excited!!!! And fingers crossed for my waitlisted brethren (sistren?)!! There are tons of people out there who would KILL to be waitlisted for an interview, so I am very impressed and hopeful!

I'd familiarize with current events and skim thru the Davis website and just be myself. Over-preparing can be worse than under-preparing.

Also, if they do ask an ethical question (really am not sure if they can in this format), REALLY stick to a side. Don't be wishy washy about your answer. I think with this year they really want to see how you think, so just be really clear and succinct on why you would do something a certain way (and don't doubt yourself after you leave the interview!)

They're doing MMI now right? I thought the whole point of that was more ethical or whatever situations where you have to deal with a problem or respond to a scenario.
From what I've heard, the important thing is to choose a response and stick to it and be able to defend it, even if the interviewers come up with questions to it and respond to it opposing your response.

Yes... From what I understand, the questions won't necessarily have anything to do with vet medicine content at all. They will be general life scenarios you are presented with, that test you on certain personality traits and skills.

I just checked the applicant portal, and there are still 8 interview spots not filled. So, waitlist people, those spots could go to you if they aren't filled in the next couple of days!

Depends on what day is your free day. If you're around on a Saturday you should check out the farmers market downtown. Davis is a really quaint city, not a ton of stuff to do, but I love it. Hopefully the weather will be nice and you'll be able to walk around.

So due to my obsessiveness of late I went back and looked at the c/o 2016 thread..these things pop into mind:

1. I love how they really bonded in the forum and became such a great group...hopefully we'll be like that and root for each other.

2. I found myself really cheering for them when they got invites for interviews and admissions (especially those that were really involved in the forum)

3. Biggest one: I can't believe that interview invites didn't even go out until the end of Feb..I would have died in anticipation! Way to handle it! However, I do wish we had more info on interview questions for the MMI format this year :scared:

I've been prepping a little bit for the MMI style and my strategy has basically focused on being able to create coherent, non-rambling answers in the 2 minutes of prep/6 minutes to respond format.

We know that most of the questions are likely to be ethical, so I went through old UC Davis interview questions to find the ethical decision-making ones. One question that seemed to pop up a lot was "If a person who is moving to an area where pets are not allowed comes in with an animal they want euthanized, what would you do? Note that adoption is not an option." Since any answer is pretty much unsatisfactory (in my mind), I just think that it's an opportunity to see how you think. Can you process the complexities and implications of that kind of scenario in a logical (rather than a strictly emotional) manner?

From talking to friends of mine doing the med school route who have already done MMIs, it sounds like there's almost always one "normal" interview question. So expect something generic like, "Why do you want to come to UC Davis/be a vet?" It also sounds like there's usually a teamwork exercise that pairs up applicants or an applicant and an actor and has them do some sort of task. My friends have all said that that was by far the most relaxing of the MMI sessions they did, so just have fun with it. The only other scenario I've heard of is the "giving bad news" question where you have to tell an actor that you hit their car or something negative like that.

Does anyone else have other types of questions they want to throw out there that might show up on the interview?

Wellp, got my official interview rejection today haha and my portal had the words "DENY" in huge letters at the top. Ouch!

Add me to that list.

I am the only one listed on the official rejections. Join me..... please!

I got it too. They will have to work in that - not exactly tactful haha!

Wow. Yeah - that's a pretty harsh way to find out! Sorry about the rejections guys. I was rejected from UCD my first app year and came back the second year having made as many positive changes to my app as possible - and it worked!!! (Hopefully you have other schools to wait on and you won't even need this encouragement 'cuz you'll be drowning in acceptances soon!)

Definitely do the file review with Yasmin Williams as soon as they open up the opportunity. It is helpful.

On the other hand, knowing that the average GPA for the interviewed people was ~ 3.7 instead ~ 3.5 like previous years makes me feel better. If I had known about how the new selection process would change things up this much, I wouldn't have even bothered applying to Davis. And it also gives me hope that I still have a decent shot at the other schools I applied to, and my application isn't as hopeless as it seems. :S

Wow! Where did you hear this?

It may be true that Davis is now aiming for higher GPAs, but don't give up hope! I was granted an interview, and my overall GPA is a 3.5. (GREs weren't real high either). I do however have about 4,500 hours of veterinary experience, and in the past Davis has really pushed for people with lots of experience hours. I go to a Cal State, and a Davis representative came and talked to us last year and he said that the average veterinary experience hours that accepted students had was about 3,000.

Of course I haven't been accepted yet, but my guess is that if you want to get an interview next year and your GPA isn't super high, then get as many hours as you can!

Is that OOS, IS, or both? That's crazy high!
