I got in last year off the interview waitlist, so it's not hopeless. However, the Davis interviews were among the last so whoever gave up their spot had already been accepted to their top choice university. It's a pity that Davis interviews are first this year because no one will have already been accepted 🙁
 
Nope, didn't make it off the waitlist. Oh well. :S I guess that means less chance of getting off waitlists for other schools?

I wouldn't think of it that way. Each school is different and what they are looking in students is different.

I got another email from the application portal saying I had a message on the portal.
Turns out it was just a message saying they'd put up directions to the school from the airport etc.

Jeez, give me some more heart attacks why don't you.

Agreed, always makes me nervous!

Did anybody else know that they were going to require a certain computer next year?

I have always wanted to try a tablet computer so I do not really mind but I was not aware that they were going to make certain computers a requirement.

They've done that for...at least 6 years now. They don't hide it.
 
Q about selection process post-interview: How do they choose applicants? Do they go back and rank you, taking in account your GPA/GRE again? Or is it holistic with less emphasis on grades and stuff?
 
Hey guys - just found out that I'm going to be helping with the tours on the days you come in for your interview. I have blonde hair but it is red underneath and always in a ponytail. If you are in one of my groups - let me know you are from SDN! 🙂 Looking forward to meeting you!

I am assigned for every day but some days I'm just an alternate in case someone else can't make it.

I got the 14th at 9:40. Awesome that some sdn people will be there. Maybe I can meet some of you.

Also, how are people preparing for these MMI interviews? I figure preparing will only cause you to have a cookie cutter response rather than an authentic response... Although I am not really sure what to expect, I heard that this format is actually really fun, so we shall see.

I am just trying to review ethical questions and search for possible scenarios to get a feel for the type of questions, but not really coming up with full blown answers for anything. Like you said it should be a pretty authentic response. But feeling I prepared a little will help with my nerves 🙂

I am also interested to see which type of interview I like better. 🙄

I encountered a group of touring interviewees walking into our homeroom as I was leaving. Thirty seconds earlier, and they would have walked in on me standing in the dark, shoving cookies into my mouth like some sort of feral animal.

I'm excited to hear about everyones' interview experiences!
 
Just had my interview today. Loved the school, but didn't get to meet any current students. 🙁
(apparently they were all taking finals)

I probably won't be able to visit again as I live on the east coast and this trip was expensive. Any current students here who wouldn't mind answering some questions I have via messaging?

I had my interview yesterday!
Overall the process wasn't too terrible. We had to sign confidentiality agreements regarding the prompts, so I can't give any specifics. But there were a variety of prompts given, and some (one in particular) were even a little fun. Afterwards we got a yummy sack lunch and then listened through the orientation. After that we toured the facilities, which looked amazing.

OwlandPussycat, are you the one with the Bostons? If so, I was in that group, and your pups are super cute. Seeing the class homeroom was probably one of the nicest experiences of the whole day, because it seemed casual and comfortable (which we needed after such a stressful morning!).
 
I'm not interviewing or anything. I will probably be applying to the ℅ 19 or 20 😀 but I will be visiting a friend in Davis around the 19th. I was wondering if the current vet students know if it's allowed for me to tour the vet campus during the winter break or will all the buildings probably be closed?

I interviewed today. I actually thought a lot of the MMI scenarios were fun! There were a couple, about [redacted] and [redacted], that I would do again if I got the chance, just for the entertainment.

I think the new curriculum sounds really cool, and from what we heard today there will actually be a decent amount of elective-type stuff in third year, and of course in clinical rotations. It sounds like Davis is trying to expand the clinical year to more than 48 weeks, to something like 60 weeks. Interesting.

Oh man I just realized you guys (class of 2017) will be inheriting our homeroom!

It's a nice homeroom we got the corner and it's sweet treat it well. 😳
 
What is a homeroom? They didn't show us this on the tour after my interview... (it wasn't given by students because they were all taking finals >_<)
 
Hey, I'm new to SDN, but I have my UC Davis interview Tuesday and I have no clue what to wear so I'm kind of freaking out. For those who already interviewed what was everyone wearing? And for those who have yet to....what are you planning to wear?

It says business attire, so does that mean a suit? I have dark grey slacks, so I was originally planning to buy a black blazer and nice top.....but I'm not sure if that's formal enough.

It's supposed to be a cozy room for people to relax, study, eat lunch and such - its on the second floor in the hallway across from where you did scenario 7 (i saw the signs last night when i went to print something). All your class' mailboxes are in there. They also have a bunch of dogs in crates as well, which may or may not be an asset to to your homeroom, depending on your perspective and how well your classmates have trained their dogs.

I had my interview on Thursday and almost everyone was in suits. I wore a business dress and a blazer and it was formal enough. But I would recommend the blazer and slacks with either a button down or something similar.
PS for fellow interviewees- don't be nervous. The questions truly had no right or wrong answers and it was obvious that they were designed to test your personality. Just be yourself, it's not a stressful as you would think.

When I was interviewing, everyone (including the schools) said to wear a suit. Either a pencil skirt with a blazer or a pantsuit. Basically, you want to look business-y and professional. I wore black slacks, a black blazer, and a plain shirt underneath.
I don't want to freak you out, but I had a really hard time finding a pantsuit (mostly because I'm proportioned weirdly, and pants don't fit me well haha), and had to have both pants and blazer tailored (thanks mom!).
So if you're like me, and don't own anything even remotely professional-looking, you probably want to get out there this weekend.
But seriously, don't freak out about it too much. They are interviewing YOU, the candidate, not your outfit. 🙂
 
Good luck everyone interviewing in the next few days! Don't worry about the interviews too much, they were much less stressful than I had imagined.

Also: I KNOW I won't be hearing anything till mid-January. Why am I still checking my email/the portal contsantly? There is no point! Why do I do this....
 
Hey! I'm interviewing manaña and I brought two suits because I'm a cluts. Could anyone from the Davis area or who just visited tell me if its too cold to wear a skirt suit? Pantsuit and winter coat over suit jacket necessary?
Also, I'm afraid I'll fall on my face in heels, but are flats too unformal and un-business like?
Did the interviewers have time to elaborate on the scenario presented right off the bat before they pose their response questions? Or do I Initially restate the prompt and my position quickly and wait for them to ask the questions that draw more details from me? Wondering if I'm supposed to go in to the if's and butt's immediately or wait for them to provoke those ideas.

Ooh! One more thing. I heard that there's no time for interpersonal chat during the MMI. So they don't ask the typical "do you have any questions for us?" at the end? I wonder if I have to do some more intense researching about the school to make some specific questions for the interviewers.

Well it was a few days ago that I was there, but you could wear a skirt without being too cold.
After the interview you go on a tour through the veterinary facilities, so heels may become uncomfortable if you aren't used to them. I saw a number of fellow interviewees in flats, so I think you could wear them too.

For the interviews, you will go to your station and immediately start reading the prompt. You'll have 3 minutes to read it, and then they'll announce that it's time to enter the room. I can't give specifics, but for most of them the interviewers will then ask you a question or questions. They cannot elaborate on the prompt at all, and there is no personal chit chat. Personally I think that researching information about the school would have limited usefulness during the interviews.

The environment is definitely stress inducing, but I think everyone I spoke with agreed that all of the knots leave your stomach after your very first interview. Don't worry about trying to prepare for it. Just have fun with it and treat it like the novel experience that it is!

I'm sure everyone has already thought about this, and I can't speak for the MMI format, but I think that your state of mind/stress going into the interview is a big factor. At my first interview (not at Davis), I sat around for 30 minutes before the interview, stewing in my own anxiety. There were other candidates there, but I didn't talk to them. When I interviewed, I was nervous as hell, and ended up being awkward and forgetting stuff about my own life.

By contrast, I spent the 20 or so minutes before my Davis interview chatting with the woman who was registering us, and cuddling with the puppy(!!) that she was watching that day. It really helped me calm down and get into a chatty, personable mindset, which carried over into the interview.

Anyways, TL;DR - Take at least a few minutes before the interview to sit down, take a few deep breaths, and put yourself in a really positive mindset. I'm so excited for everyone!
 
So I definitely prefer other formats other than MMI interviews. I think I did fine and the nerves went away real quick 🙂 but it was totally different then what I expected. For future interviewees, there truly is NO way to prepare. I would definitely enjoy a more conversational interview rather than MMI, but I am glad I got to experience both and hope that good things come of it 🙄

I like the idea of the MMI, but I feel like the process here needs to be tweaked a bit. It is fairly awkward to be interacting with a robot without any direction or feedback while you're discussing the topic. I would have preferred (and what I was expecting coming in!) that the raters would be allowed to provide some direction with follow up questions or even some personal ones based on your responses and the prompt. This process has made me second guess myself if I misread/misinterpreted a prompt, which could very well lead to some pretty horrendous answers since they are not allowed to interact with you. I don't think that was the case, but it very easily could have been. But I guess we were all in the same boat this year!
