im kinda worried about the pbl curriculum. they said that we will only be taught the hard topics in lecture and we have to learn the rest on our own. how will we know what to study? do we have to check out books by ourself? the faculty said not to worry, but i am. im worried i wont learn everything that i need to for the exam.

thoughts?

UCLA is P/F...and it's pretty hard to fail. Unlike college, there's no way that you can be "fully prepared" for exams at med school. You walk in not always knowing if you have covered everything in your studies.

well at least ide like to have all the material im supposed to know so that i have at least a chance to try to learn everything, even thought its not possible. and yes, its p/f, but doesnt your ranke matter still?

During the luncheon on second look day, they mentioned how med school is unlike undergrad--there's no set syllabus for material to be covered...that's why independent study is important.

Board Score and performance in 3rd year clinical rotation are more important than any class ranking they have for the first 2 years.

Jeez, I'm so tired of waiting...although I've only been waiting for UCLA since the end of March...but it's all the waiting for the other schools has worn me down. And every day, a family member, a coworker, or even a random aquaintence will ask me "Where have you gotten in?" or "Any news?" I swear, if my dog could talk, he'd ask me too! Although he actually has a stake in where I go.

some guy who used to do research with me and who disappeared last summer called me last month and left a msg on my phone. he didnt ask me how i was or what i was up to, all he said was, "hi docmemi. i only called to find out where you got in. call me." so annoying, rude and nosey (sp?).

on a side, another thing i really like about ucla is how much community service the students do. a huge percent of the class is involved with the community and its not even a requirement. i find that way cooool.

Instead of being totally honest about questions like these...I think it's better to say things like "I'll know where I'm going by July" even though you may make the decision before then...

I read somewhere in this thread that the incoming med school class is guaranteed housing at Weyburn Terrace. I was wondering if anyone knows if this grad student housing is fully constructed or if it is still under construction. If it is still under construction, what if it is not finished by August 2004? I read somewhere that it should be ready by Fall 2004, but for ucla "Fall" is considered september, right? I'm just thinking maybe I shouldn't totally rely on this grad student housing and instead look for apartments in the area. Any thoughts? (I realize I sound paranoid!)

I drove by weyburn recently and it didn't look even close to be finished. The website says: "Anticipated availability of the apartments in Weyburn Terrace is academic year 2004/2005." I hope they will be done by fall.

I believe the Med School is trying to push Housing office to get at least part of the apartment areas completed, so med students can move in. Dean Parker joked that if the housing's not ready by the time school starts, people can stay at his home.

i thought i heard dean parker say that the first complex should be done in may 2004?? but he made it pretty clear that there will be housing for everyone who wants it. so i dont think you have much to worry about. if you are so worried i think you should just call housing or student affairs, 310-825-3575?

That will be cool. There will be 600 units. Hopefully some units will be completed by then. I drove by there during the second look weekend, looks like they have to work overtime to get them ready soon. Worse come to worse we just camp out at Dean Parker's lawn...

I interviewed early March, and haven't heard anything since. Things wouldn't be so bad if EVERYONE I run into asks me if I have heard anything yet. 🙁

It's really unfortunate they can't keep to schedule, but if I were for sure going to UCLA this fall, I would not plan on living in the graduate housing on Weyburn.

Yea...UCLA's beauracracy can be so horrible, partly because the school's so big that it's hard for the administration to pay attention to everything. However, I do believe that the Med school will continue to put pressure on housing office. After all, the Dean promised student housing for next year...backing out at the last minute will create much dissent...if worst come to come and Weyburn Terrace's not available for next school year, I think they'll figure something out (Doubt they'll temporarily place people at the residence halls because those are like totally packed already).

As an undergrad, there was a time when there wasn't enough rooms in the residence halls. Housing ended up converting the study lounges on each floor into 6-people room. These people were later transferred to undergrad apts. I believe this situation only happened to transfer students but it created much dissent.

Thanks for posting that. I checked my status as well after reading your post, (I interviewed a month ago) and looks like my letter was also mailed out today. I almost don't want to know... I feel like until that letter arrives, I can keep alive this fantasy I have that I could actually be accepted into UCLA... but once I actually open that letter, I'm afraid that'll no longer be the case.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. There were people who interviewed after me and heard back before I did. They said 6-8 weeks, and I got mine in right around that time. If its been more than 8 weeks, though, I would call them up. Good luck.

Yeah, adcom's behaviour is predictable in the fact that it can't be well predicted. I think for those of use whose letters were sent out today, the best chance is to get on the priority unranked waiting list.
In my case, though, one of the schools I'm accepted at, and like the most, starts in late June/early July, while UCLA doesn't start until August. If I get on the wait list at UCLA and don't hear anything through the end of June...

I googled the Weyburn Terrace and found a few updates about its construction. This update (see link below) was written in February 2004. It doesn't say much we don't already know, but I thought it was an interesting article anyway. I'm excited about this new graduate housing....it's almost too good to be true! (And the article says it'll be ready by Fall, just like we've all heard, but who knows...)

They are apts - Kitchen, living room, private bath in each room. Should be much better than dorm. I guess they are unfurnished, we have to get our own furniture... Is there any IKEA in LA?

For those of you who had their letters sent out... when did you guys interview (exact dates)? I interviewed 7 weeks ago and my status page is still the same. And does anybody know whether UCLA tend to send out post-interview letters with mix results, or in batches of only acceptances or waitlists?

Oh yeah, from reading last year's thread, most people who were accepted after April 15 received their acceptance letter through UPS express mailing. Which is probably a day or two after the mailing date.

Makes me think a quick rejection might be on the way. I know there's no point in me trying to overanalyze it though; it's already been decided and I guess I'll find out soon enough... and I hope you won't have to wait too much longer to get your letter. 🙂

Just from reading this thread, it seems that the first batch of letters was sent out around Feb. 15th, and another batch around March 15th, and both contained a mix of acceptances, waitlists (both priority and hold), and rejections.

A few years back, UCLA housing built some housing for undergrads, called De Neve Plaza. Those turned out to be really nice, but the drawback was the small size of it because they have 2-3 people per room.

I think we can expect really nice housing at Weyburn Terrace too. The good thing about University Housing is that utilities are paid for, so you can turn on the AC 24/7 and use the dishwasher every night and you still won't go bankrupt. However, the apts may be smaller than the ones that you will fine South of Wilshire (a few blocks away only). We'll just have to see.
