OK. I reread what I said and I retract the part about you biting the big one. UCLA must THINK you bite the big one (why else would they reject you outright instead of putting you on hold which is the same as a rejection?)

hey man, bite me.

hey everyone!!

i didnt get an acceptance, but it says "The committee on admissions considers you to be a qualified candidate for med skool, blah.......we have thus assigned you to a waiting list without ranking."

so i guess im on tier one, which is soooo much better than a rejection for me, since its my number 1 choice~!!

gosh i hope i get in!.....this is my second waitlist and 0 acceptances....but im soo thankful at this still!!

i wish everyone good wishes as they wait for their letter!

thanks for the support everyone!

Last year I heard the waitlist moves quite a lot b/c people were hesistant about the new UCLA curriculum. This year, similar thing may happen with the cadaver scandal, outrageous tuition hike and stuff.

Hey guys,

I had a question, it says in the letter to inform them of wanting to be on the waitlist. I actually had sent by express mail, a letter of intent the same day this final decision letter was sent out.

Do you think I should send a copy of the letter of intent with my desire to remain on the waitlist?

Also, the letter is signed by Neil H Parker, the sr associate dean for student affairs, should i address the letter to him, or the dean , or the admissions committee?

thanks a bunch!

lets stay positive!!

I'll still write another letter, just to be safe. I think addressing the letter to admission committee in general should be fine. We're not talking about Columbia P&S (Dr. Frantz) here 😉

Anyone else on here going to be checking their mail tomorrow expecting to get their letter that was sent 3/10?

The second look weekend is 4/17. I am surprised that you guys have not rec'd anything esp the long nice letter from Dr. Leavey.
Something wrong with their mailing.

Ohh...you mean the letter that was sent to my home address and my parents only mentioned yesterday. I want to read a nice letter 🙁.

Yes, that is the letter. Dr Leavey welcomes you to the UCLA family. Then he went on explaine that UCLA has one the best kick ass new hospital and research facilities in the nation. However, he did not noticed that the current ranking of the hospital is NO. 3 instead of No 5. (U.S. News). We will have a chance to tour the new hospital ( $1.4 Billion project, the biggest UC project ) during the second look. Hope to see you guys there. Good Luck.

I'm going for the night out with current med students, but I would just skip the tour. Been here on campus for 5 years, not sure if there's anything new to see.

hmmm, maybe mine got lost in the mail. i already called so i dont want to again. any suggestions?

sucks i dont get to go to 2nd look. that would have been nice.

Sorry can't help you if you want a very "personal" tour. It seems like we're all guys here (I could be wrong) 😀

Plus if you're expecting extra "experience" besides the tour, again, we can't help with ya either 😉

Where in NorCal?

I'm in the San Jose, San Francisco Bay Area... Should I be harassing my mail man today???

Thanks, guys. I'm convinced it was an administrative error. 😛

I PMed you, MDTom.

hmmm....

unranked waitlist...

and the waiting continues...

Hey guys I just called the Admissions Office. They said the 2nd list only starts being used after the first list has been "exhausted". She also said there are about 100 people on each list.

Hey are you a girl by any chance? JLee's looking for someone to give him a "personal" tour of the campus (Read the posts above) 😉

Perfect! Oh and you don't even have to know the campus too well...the "tour" portion of it's not the most important part hehe 😀

By the way, Congrats. See you on April 17 if you're coming!

So I awaited UCLA judgment day today. I opened up the skinny envelope and. . .REJECTION! LOL! I guess their adcoms must have thought I bit the big one. I know it probably wasn't my interview cause my interviewer seemed to really like me. Maybe it's for the best with the whole cadaver/anatomy lab situation. UCLA was still pretty high on my list but it definately dropped a bit when I heard about the possibility of no dissections.

It's been a fun ride guys. Good luck at UCLA or whatever med schools you attend.

hey alexander, maybe its bad karma for judgeing quiet, helpful sdn'ers that were rejected from ucla post-interview.

jk, i'm sorry to hear about your rejection. where are you going? usc?

hey guys, just got my letter. i got a waiting list without ranking too.

oh man, i would do anything for this school

at least my heart can go back to rrr now

the entire app process will never cease to amaze me...
i just dont think ill ever understand it.

Tell me about it. I didn't internalize the "Crapshot" theory of med school application until I went through the process myself.

for those of you who received a post-interview letter from UCLA... when did you guys interview?

I just want an estimate as to how long it will take them to get back to me.

Thanks,

~schoolboy

hey guys,

Congrats to the acceptance and waitlists!

I am sitting at work right now knowing that the decision is waiting in my mailbox (well at least I think that it will come today).

snowbear

I interviewed on 1/15 and heard back today 3/15 with a waiting list w/o ranking

Haha. I still think they thought I bit the big one or else they could have at least put me in the hold category (which is the same as a rejection pretty much.)

Well, as of now, it's USC but I'm waiting to hear back from UCSD. I think if I get in at SD, I'll attend there. The $$$ difference is just too much and I've always liked San Diego. They sometimes get back to you pretty quickly, don't they?

They are quick sometimes. But, it took them from 10.6 to 12.10 to accept me. I didn't write an LOI.

Maybe we'll be classmates then 🙂

You interviewed way early so I'm sure that's why it took a little longer. Afterall, are they really going to accept you mid October? I'm really counting on them to show me some love. That'd be interesting if we ended up classmates. Your profile is very similar to mine.

Yeah, I was weary of the rumors for awhile but I really had a good time when I was there and it is a beautiful/relaxing location and although I think I'd prefer PBL I can deal with lectures.

interviewed on 11-6, recieved tier-1 unranked waitlist today 3-15

... tier-1 has a certain ring to it, doesn't it? ... heheh... tier-1

That's kinda like my friend who hangs gutter for a living; we call him a water diversion technician.

Hey DK. You're a part of the exclusive UCLA post interview, straight rejection club with me, right? How'd you feel your interview went? I swore my interview was one of my best ones--do you get the impression that the interview had nothing to do with their decision like I do?

Nope, it was the complete opposite for me. I felt like the Dr. that interviewed me had a huge amount of power, he wrote down everything I said, challenged and argued everything I said, and left me with a horrible impression of the admissions process at UCLA. He said nothing positive, disagreed with everything I said, and pretty much just exhausted me. I don't really care though honestly the name excited me but nothing else really grabbed me and said this is the school for you. My student interviewer said she parties 4 nights a week and takes Fridays off. I had mixed feelings about that.

I never got one of those griller interviewers during this whole process. In a way, I was hoping I'd get someone like that cause I think being able to deal with pressure is one of my strong points. I'm convinced I could have been able to keep my cool regardless of what my interviewer threw at me and he/she would have no choice but to accept me after realizing how unphased I was by them. :hardy:

My UCLA interviewer was really nice and he really seemed interested in me as a person. It was highly conversational and I felt I got to say everything I'd want to say in an interview. Who knows. Maybe he was really nice but thought I was a total A-hole. Regardless, UCSD, show me some love!!

uci put me on the alternate list and i thought both of my interviews were great. i also was in their like 3rd interview group, so i thought they really liked me. oh well.

My understanding of how much interviews matter at most schools is that they can only hurt you or help if you they go extremely badly or well.

For example, I was talking to one professor who's on an admissions committee and he said that you can anywhere from 1-20 points per interview at his particular school. Overall, there is a total of 200 points for your application which is based on MCATs, GPA, experiences, etc. He said that invariably, most interviewees get anywhere from 17-19 points for any given interview. In the grand scheme of things, even if you had "mediocre" interviews and received 34 points after 2 interviews and someone else got 38 points for pretty good interviews, that's only a difference of 4 points out of 200.

So according to the professor, the interviews only make a huge difference if you get a 10 or less or a 20. In that situation, the adcoms will ask the interviewer why that particular applicant got such a low or high score on the interview. The interviewer will then present his or her case of why the applicant was terrible or really great. So being talked about negatively or positively in that manner can definately make a difference in your application. Other than the extremes though, the interviews don't seem to matter all that much.
