Well, aparently the decision was not waiting in my mailbox. It was sooooooooooo frustrating. The first thing I thought was that I would have to go through the waiting for one more day. It's hard enough as it is at work, constantly looking at the clock to see when I get to go home, but when you add the anticipation of a "final decision letter", the eight-hour work day is excrutiating.

Does anybody else hate the UCLA admissions process? It is soooo annoying to me that they post that a final decision letter was sent on the website status page, but they don't tell you what the decision was. So, in my case, for like a week I know that there has been a decision but I don't know what it is.

Anyway, I kinda want to call today, because I don't want to continue to go through this. What do you guys think? Does it say anywhere not to call for the decision? I think someone else said they called, should I?

Thanks for your help 🙂

They don't give out decisions over the phone, but if you try you may get lucky and get to talk to one of the staff that's more lenient about it.

You can call but they won't tell you over the phone. I don't think anyone's been successful getting a decision over the phone. The only exception might be if it's been weeks since they sent the letter and it's obvious that it got lost in the mail.

they wont give you a decision over the phone. its been tried and many have failed.

i cant blame the ucla admissions....at least they let you know when a decision has been made....not like the majority of these other schools that wont even end up sending me those valuable rejection letters.....

if anything blame their mail service....but not the adcoms.

I think that I would rather not know that the decision was coming, because then I wouldn't go crazy waiting for it. Before the letter was sent I wasn't thinking too much about the decision, but because I know that the decision is coming I keep running all of the different scenarios through my head.

And also, I wish they sent the letters in batches, like all acceptances or all WLs and rejections, so you could kinda guess what the decision was going to be.

Anywho, I guess I won't call and hopefully it will be there tonight.

the waiting for la might have sucked....

but deep down inside it would have sucked even more that they havent even made a decision on me....

but then again the way the send out everything regardless of it being an acceptance WL hold or rejection is nice cause you wont get discouraged if they did send it out in batches...and yours was in the...for example....WL batch....

still gives ya hope.

Way to be positive Jlee. I guess there are good things about their crappy system 😀

On another note, does anyone know when UCLA starts?

I believe the beginning of August.

damn that be early...why cant they be like davis and start in sept...man too bad...i was thinking if the med school started around the same time the undergrad did...that would be like october haha.

Orientation is 8/2 - 8/6 and the class starts 8/9 (Monday). Apparently it starts 6 weeks before the regular school. Looking for a apartment will be a challenge this summer ...

Have they told you when UCLA's white coat ceremony is this year?

Should be on the last day of orientation 8/6. Parents and friends are invited.

Good old waitlist. I am withdrawing. Now it's settled, I am going where I was meant to be all along. I will always be a bruin, but now I will also be a trojan 😀 I am living proof that they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Alas, we can all live in peace.

Best of luck to all of you future UCLA med students. I hope to see you guys on some rotations in LA 🙂

Hey Snowbear sorry to hear that. Good Luck to you. Sure you will enjoy and do great at USC.

sorry snowbear but it does seem like its your fate to go to usc all along.

After this med school app process, I believe more in the power of fate--there're just things that you can't control, and even if you put it the effort, the outcome's still the same.

Well I'm not being pessimistic...

believing in fate is the only way i can accept the way thing are going right now. its the only way to stop thinking about it!

don't get me wrong though, i'm still an atheist.

Hey DrKevin, if you get into UCSF-UCB program, they will start in May... kind of early. I did not apply that program. Good Luck.

yeah actually its june 20th or so if i'm not mistaken. i hope i get in! it would be fun to go back to berkeley and be a GSI! worst case scenario: getting into this program but waitlisted at cornell. ahhhh!

I went to summer school at Cal every summer except the last year. I am kind of sick going to summer school any more, that is why I did not apply that program...I am at high priority list in UCSF, don't know until May 15... may be longer...

I'm actually Agnostic, but I was seriously praying to God tonight. March has been bad luck for me.

First came the Northwestern waitlist, then Columbia waitlist. Then I totally bombed two midterms in a row for my class (There are 4 midterms, and the drop of score from 2nd to 3rd midterm was so significant that the professor emailed me asking me what's going wrong?)

Almost ran over by the cars like 5 times already this month, then I spill my TV dinner all over myself this afternoon (First time in a decade). And there are small things here and there that seem like signs of Omen.

Hey CalBeE,

Take it easy man. Don't worry too much...roll with the punches. Beside you get several acceptances under you belt...you are very lucky compare with a lot of people out there....

I can't help but think how much my international student status has come into play in these decisions. Some schools told me right out they don't accept me, NYU even gave me a refund. Several schools told me my status won't make a difference, but a former adcom told me to take what those schools say with a grain of salt.

And I'm actually pretty sure that if I'm not an undergrad at UCLA, I'll be waitlisted or rejected at Geffen by now, and I'm not kidding. The process is harsh enough, and schools just make it tougher for us foreigners.

Can someone just marry me so I can get a green card? 🙁

Tell you what CalBeE...I'll marry you and get you a green card if you'll fork over that UCLA acceptance so that I can take your place...deal? 😀

I know that everything looks glum right now but you have a "golden ticket" medical school so be happy!!! Most people don't ever have that opportunity. Everything happens for the best and I truly believe in that...so I'm sure that it's only looking up for you from this point onwards.

Hang in there! 😉

The UCLA Acceptance is precisely what leads me to believe so much in fate this past month. THe odds are way against me at UCLA (The only thing that helps is my undergrad connection here), and actually statistically my chance is way higher at Northwestern (at least as an international student).

So I came to the conclusion that since it's my fate to goto UCLA, even if I try really hard to pursue all the waitlists, I won't get in. I just don't think I can change what fate has for me.

Oh and for those that wonder, I really wanna spend the next 4 years exploring a different city, and I've been at UCLA for like 5 years, that's why I'm trying hard to pursue those waitlists.

calbe, where is your family? where do you want to live long term?

Eventually, I wanna settle down in the U.S., and hopefully either in the bay area, Chicago, or the NYC area, cause those are places that I like the most.

My parents are in Hong Kong, and my sister's in Pittsburgh. Officially I'm an Australian citizen and my student visa's in my Australian passport, but I don't feel any strong tie to Australia at all. Plus neither Sydney nor Brisbane is my type of city.

interesting. so did you live in australia most of your life? how did you end up at ucla for undergrad?

I actually haven't lived in Australia (surprising huh?), but I have visited it a few times. I was born in India (My dad was studying there), and my family lived briefly in the UK, but I lived in Hong Kong most of my life, and that's where I consider to be my hometown.

I went to a small, virtually unknown high school in Santa Cruz, and when I was applying for college I didn't know what the heck I was doing but I guess I got lucky and got into UCLA. (See I hate to blame my high school, but the counsellors weren't very encouraging/knowledgable in terms of applying to the UC system, they wanna push kids into colleges affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church, the same church that's affiliated with Loma Linda University).

And now here I am, in Los Angeles. 😀 My sister's in Pittsburgh now but she's not sure where she'll be after she graduates

No doubt this thread is one of the most popular one. It may reach 100K readers(views) before 5/15. We are only behind the USC thread by a small margin....

thats funny. lets have a competition. actually, technically we are winning here cause i started the usc thread a looonnng time ago and we are pretty close.

You're not somehow related to the 12 year old MD/PhD student at U of Chicago, are you? 😉

I am sooooo boycotting this thread from now on.

no im not related. im not asian either.

finally got my invitation letter from dean levey today. it sounds different though from the one you guys got...mine talked about ucla and the new hospital + research facilities. but it didnt mention that they were no 5 or 3 or whatever. hmmm, maybe they changed it. but it was awesome...personally signed and it said welcome to the ucla family. loving it right now.

hey guys'

does anyone know about how many people are on the waiting list called unranked?

Im on it, and I wanted to know what my true chances are, its my number one choice.

does anyone know how they begin to choose once people start dropping ucla around may 15th?

i sent a letter of intent, i hope that helps

im not sure, but an earlier poster said there is about 100 people on each waitlist.

since its unranked this means that when a spot opens up they will review them all again and choose.....i think they would pick someone with a similar profile as the person who dropped (stats, EC's, background, etc) to maintain diversity. thats just a thought though.

i would just call and theyll tell you...

I'm under the impression that UCLA accepts quite a lot of people from the waitlist. Diversity in background/experience seems to be a big thing here. I remember attending an award luncheon where they give out scholarships to undergrad hospital volunteers AND Medical students. The medical students get to share their stories and some of these people are really amazing!

i havent received finaid info. i received the letter from the dean. the adm office told me that finaid info wont come for a long time. but there is a website for finaid that you can use. just browse around the medschools website and u can find it easily. btw, there is no deadline.

It does not look good under the current financial / economic situation of our Goldern State. We all know Gov. uncle Arnold is not very friendly , financially to the UC system in general. I heard from the news today that the UC system has $1.5 Billion Deficit this year while the enrollment will go up 16% next year. I think we had a better chance getting financial help from our parents/ Grand Mom... Good Luck for those apply the financial....😕 😕

Are they still interviewing ?

Yeah, UCLA is still interviewing. My friend just got an interview for April 14
