I wonder how many acceptances have been sent out so far. It seems pretty quiet.I guess a lot of people do not post their acceptance here. 😕

dont worry too much about it. rejections are a natural part of the application process. yeah they suck...but unavoidable.

i do hope that you have an acceptance somewhere so that you can start on a path to learning medicine like the rest of us this fall. 🙂

I'm coming to UCLA for sure, but I posted only on the MSTP forum...and then proceeded to celebrate --> :hardy: & 😴 !Hello to my new classmates (who ever it is that has decided to come to UCLA 😕 !).

i heard we start class at 10am, is that right? thats awesome...many schools start at 8am. also, i dont get it...so do we have 3 days of testing after each block?

i was wondering if i had the time if i could just show up and join in on the activites....

but im thinking thats prolly not allowed...

Honestly, I doubt that missing the 2nd look weekend means much. It seems like it's mostly people talking, campus touring, and going out with current med students. You won't miss much except the great fun we'll have 😉

Oh shoot...I tried to delete the post before you see it...I guess I'm just too slow...I'm just getting old and I'm losing my motor skill...

Hey Vaughn is cool, at least CIA agents like him can goto all these exotic pretty places and look cool in the high tech gears!
 
yes, we had to rsvp by faxing a form back. hope that helps.

ps: accd to the agenda, the second look day is mainly about the curriculum. there is even a part where students go to assigned pbl small groups and then we come back and discuss what we thought about it. there will also be a med student panel, i guess for Q/A. towards the end there will be infformation tables about different student groups and community service. finally, you can go on an optional tour and/or a "night on the town with current med students."

are you still interested? i think ill be going just to get more familiar with the curriculum and to meet some of the people. also, i just want to get more familiar with the institution...ive been at keck usc all of my life. but, i dont think its anything that important.

THe White Coat Ceremony is sometime during the week of Aug 2-6.

After resigning myself to a likely late April interview date, I got the call today and my interview is in two days! :scared: I'm so worried that because this is the one interview I wanted the most out of any school I applied to, I'm going to end up messing it up. 🙁 I think an outright acceptance for me is out of the question this late, so I'm just going to hope that I can join all you guys on the waitlist. 🙂
 
be positive!! its not too late imo. ucla is known for taking a long time. im sure there are still spots open. go in with confidence! youll be fine.

It's probably very soon. Second look weekend is April 16 or something, so I think they'll try to get as many acceptances out as possible. UCLA's known to accept people in April/May in the past I think.
 
Hey everyone---

I interviewed last month and was told that the second round of final decision letters would go out mid April. I was told they have two rounds of mailing... one in middle Feb and one in middle April. Hang in there everyone.... we have about 3 weeks.
 
What time does revisit stuff end on April 17th? (letter was sent to perm address, parents threw away the letter after convincing me not to go, and now I changed my mind and hope that it's not too late 😛)

Why wouldn't your parents want you to go? They don't like UCLA? THey feel that the airtickets' too expensive?

The last scheduled event for that day is an optional campus tour starting at 3:15pm. THere is also an optional night time event with med student that day.

It's the money and them really wanting me to go to another school I was accepted to with a bigger name. When I got angry about it, I think they realized their closemindedness might actually push me towards UCLA, so they relented. Ahh, Asian parents.

I see...I'm assuming it's one of the brand-name schools huh? Or a school that has a higher research ranking.

When I was talking to my parents, I told them how I wanna pursue the Northwestern and Pritzker waitlists. Then my mom asked me about the ranking of the schools, and without knowing anything else, she was like, "Well I think you should just stick with UCLA"...Yea Asian parents.
 
scrabbler, r u sticking with ucla? calbe, would u pick nw or pritzker over ucla if u get off the waitlist?

r any of u guys goin on the night out with med students?
 
Right now I'm leaning towards UCLA, but I've been going back on forth on them a lot so I might feel differently tomorrow.

Do you think the revisit day is worth flying from the east coast? Like does the campus tour include the hospitals? Would there be any particularly informative activities? If I do go, I'd probably do the night out with the med students.

Well, but considering they interview until late April, I think they would also have to send out a round of decisions in early May. From reading this thread, it seems the first round of decisions was sent near Feb 15th, then again around March 15th, and if that pattern holds, the next round should be near April 15th like you said, and once again before May 15th for the late April interviewees.

For me personally, I only interviewed this past week, so I would be surprised to hear by mid-April.

Docmemi, right now the answer is yes. My heart tells me that I would be happier in Chicago than at L.A. (It's a matter of location, mainly)

well they will be doing lots of curriculum stuff, including actually separating us into assigned groups and doing some PBL. so if you want to know the details about the curric. to make ur final decision, id come. but that is only if the curric is something that concerns you and can help you make up your final mind. im assuming uve already seen some stuff on your interview...

Hi Scrabber,

UCLA hospital is ranked 3rd in the nation (U.S. News) and is the best in the west. The new hopspital and research facilities ($1.5 Billion) will put UCLA in a higer ground. Besides, it has a nice warm weather. You will have an excellent chance staying in the sunny California after med school. Just my 2 cents.
 
I heard the latest bad news about the 40% tuition increase in UC professional school. Can anybody confirm this ? If this is true, then the new tution will be $21,242 ....... that means the new budget will be topping $50,000 a year for the Calif resident.... OMG...... We are not vary far behind than those Ivies.....
 
actually from what i know , the tuition hike has not been officially approved as of yet... also, the financial aid office is pretty good at matching increased fees with supplemental grant money (they did alot of that this year and my loans ended up being only marginally higher than last year)... however they surely won't be able to cover all of everyone's 40% increase if it happens. overall its still cheaper than private schools, and the best value in cali, considering all UCs are in the same boat.

on a different note, i haven't been on this board for a while and congrats to all those who are coming to ucla-geffen. you will love it! from what i have seen and heard, the new curriculum has been a great success, although i can't answer many questions about it since i am part of the old curriculum. let me know if you have any questions about ucla, med school, or living in la. it gives me a chance to procrastinate my studying for the usmle....

Thanks. I am coming to the second look weekend on 4/17. I wonder about housing situation in LA. I would prefer living around the campus in order to avoid the traffic and parking. Do you have any suggestion? what is the price range for the apts in the area(I assume the Westwood area)? Thanks for your time.

As I'm a 2nd year I'm not an expert on this yet, but from what I know they start to group people based on the fields that they intend to go into. You go to different seminars and have some longitudinal courses during the year that are more geared toward the field that you're interested in. But other than that, the colleges are not really a big deal, since 4th year consists only of electives that you want to take. I don't think it really provides you with an edge for residency per se, other than preparing you a little bit better for what you might expect.

how long can you leave ucla to rotate elsewhere?

You can only do rotations elsewhere during 4th year. There are a certain number of electives that must be done at UCLA during 4th year but I think it amounts to 2 or 3 that you could do away. Sorry I don't know the specifics yet 🙁

do the 2nd years help the 1st years?

YES.. there is a program called MSP (master study program) in which the 2nd years tutor the 1st years in small groups of 6 or so. I took MSP my 1st year and it was extremely helpful. This year I was actually an MSP leader, but it's organization was bad since the curriculum changed and it was difficult for 2nd years to help the 1st years quite as much. That won't be a problem next year.

do you have time for fun?

Yes!!! I would go crazy if I sat home studying 24-7. I make time to go out and see friends and such, but sometimes its only once a week (but that's only when it's really busy). It's a much more extensive time commitment than undergrad but you will adjust well--everyone does.

Legend,
Apartments in the Westwood area are expensive. Apartments West of Westwood Blvd are occupied by many undergrads and can get very noisy during the school year. Apartments East of Westwood Blvd tend to be occupied by retired elderly/professors, etc., so it should be quieter, but more expensive.

I'd suggest looking for apartments south of Wilshire Blvd (UCLA's campus is north of Wilshire Blvd). Apartments are bigger and perhaps quieter. There's a shuttle that runs from 1 block south of Wilshire to right in front of the med school. And even if you live south of Wilshire, walking is probably about 20 minutes.

Legend, CalBeE is correct on all accounts. Avoid living in Westwood village due to noise and high rent costs. The possible exception is a brand new, huge UCLA graduate student complex that is slated to be open by the fall.... if you can manage to acquire grad student housing (either the new complex or the old ones), take it!! The value is phenomenal, plus they are always linked to campus directly via shuttle.
