I personally like Pro-section, so maybe the cadaver scandal will push UCLA towards that direction.

Oh and btw this is a Bump in disguise 😀

hey calbee...when you go to second look...make sure you post and tell all about it for us waitlisters...(even though you say we wont miss much 😉)

have fun next weekend.

As I mentioned, besides the great fun we'll have, the chance to meet cool current med students, and to see HOT HOT girls on campus, AND to enjoy the warm weather at a park-like gorgeous campus....you won't be missing out much. 😉

For anyone not going to UCLA's second-look, don't worry. I called and they told me that they will be doing exactly the same thing at the orientation in the fall. So, you will not miss anything. They said it is basically for people who are truly undecided and are relatively unfamiliar with UCLAs atmosphere.

>50 people are going, with about 30 people signed up for the "night out" option. A good number of people from MA, and lots from CA (of course) outside of LA.

I didn't apply to UCLA, but judging from the ridiculous, borderline absurd, amount of posts on this thread, maybe I should have. Why the hell are you all so obsessed with this school? What is the deal? I am not trying to be a jerk here, but this thread gets more play than any other single school thread--so, one has to wonder, right?

It's a UC school, high-ranked, relatively cheap tuition, supposedly nice location.

Plus it doesn't actively advertise itself too much...remember how psychologists say that people desire more that things that they don't get easily? UCLA fits that profile.

This morning I was trying to book the hotel around UCLA for the second look weekend....ha... believe it or not most them are full. They told me there are some big event / conference in UCLA that weekend. However, I told one of the major hotel that I am coming for the UCLA Med School second look weekend, (what now ? you mean you are going to be the med student at UCLA?....after putting me onhold for 5 minuters, I was given almost 50% off . When they emailed my confirmation the special rate code is: UCLA Medical School..... I feel so welcomed and been treated like a king by this hotel.... LA I love you.... now show me the hot chicks...HAHA...

Hey Calbe, Do you know what we are going to do for the "night out with the current med students? Are there any hot med students to be there? hehehe.... 😍

Nice. Congratulations for getting the 50% off.

As for the LA women, after reading some of the posts on this forum, I've always wanted to point out that it is overrated. I don't have anything against LA women, and yes, there are many that are hot. But, I really don't think LA is some place just filled with hotties. Of all the med school interviews I've been to, NYU had the most good-looking students.

🙂

May be I am watching too much Hollywood movies ..hehehe....... However, I do think the LA women are more laid back than those in the East Coast....

I live in the Hollywood area. There are acting schools near my apartment and maybe this area is an exception in that it does seem to have a lot of attractive women and men (aspiring actresses and actors). But, I don't know. Maybe its just me, but my values/mentality and their's are really different and I haven't really clicked with any of them.

I don't mean to discourage you or anything...

Does anyone think it's too early to try to find housing near UCLA? I lived in a slum (more or less) when I was at Berkeley, so I'm fearful of ending up in the same situation at UCLA if i don't start looking for housing ASAP. When do most people search for housing?

Thanks!

haha berkeley wasnt that bad!!
and hey being a proud cal alum...i have to say that if you can handle cal i am sure you can handle anything ucla throws at you.

the benefit for looking now would be to find contacts of people that are leaving at the end of the quarter and get hooked up with their apts when they leave etc...

maybe you should ask if ucla med students have a message board and search on there. for ex. at davis...each class has its own website/message boards and we were told to go there and look at all the housing listings or people that need roommates etc...so that could be helpful as well...

First for hotness of people:

If you are around the Beverly Hills and Santa Monica area, you can probably see the difference...but on UCLA campus, most people are "average" looking, and South Campus (Science depts) has its huge share of ugly people 😉 North campus (Humanities depts) is rumored to be much better; I sorta agree.

For Housing:

If you want to live very close to campus, you have to start looking early cause there are many undergrads that want apts here. If you don't mind living in places that are driving distance from campus, it should be a bit easier.

For the Night-out:

I've no clue what it is. It can just be having dinner with med students. I'm not even sure they have any "planned" stuff...it's probably up to us to decide what to do.

Yea, some people will just dump somone b/c that person's head over heels on him/her.

haha you play games...you get burned... 😎

If you don't play games, you get dumped...which is worse? 😉

haha i guess i get involved with girls that dont play games and are just up front. its the style i like. 😉

I wonder about that too...I have a feeling we're going to hit the bars near campus. I say we go to Sunset and check out saddle ranch...med students on a mechanical bull = good time. 😀

I think we'll hit the bar, but I'm not sure about the rest. I don't mind drinking, but I'm not that wild of a person, so I doubt I'll get on the mechanical bull myself 😉

just try it out. and have all of the people take pictures. and then put it on the ucla med school magazine. to show how much fun ucla med students have! good exposure to yunno?

😀

If you survived living in Telegraph/People's Park area in Berkeley I think you can survive anywhere in the universe. Beware, the housing situation at UCLA is not cheap, may be equally expensive as in Berkeley. Hope we can get some info during the second look. Go Bears

I really didn't mind my Berkeley apartment, except when toilet water from the floor above leaked from the roof onto my bed in my room--two times in one year. Even with that, I love Berkeley and hey, I'd do it all over again. 🙂

Are you kidding. I really admire your courage. You would be better off camping out in People's Park....j/k

Yep, I will be missing Cal soon. I went to their summer programs since high school for every summer.....I luv going up the hill at Lawrence Lab doing some fun stuffs and enjoy the awsome view of the Bay Area ..... and I also enjoy eating lunch at Sproul Plaza on sunny days.... these may soon be sweet memories.....

are y'all going on the optional tour or the night out with ms's??

Second look day info for those who didn't get the email... 🙂

April 12, 2004

Dear Participant,

We are delighted that you will join us this Saturday for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA's Student Gathering and Recruitment Day: Entering Class of 2008.

Please plan to arrive at the meeting by 8:00AM to check in, register, pick up your materials and have something to eat before the first presentation at 8:30AM. You should allow 15 to 20 minutes to obtain your parking permit, park and walk to the Jules Stein Auditorium in the Center for the Health Sciences on the UCLA campus. From Wilshire Boulevard, proceed North on Westwood Boulevard and enter campus, continue straight to the Parking/Information Kiosk and let them know that you are attending the School of Medicine's Student Recruitment Day. Your parking permit will be free of charge and you will be directed to the appropriate parking area. Also, ask for directions to the Jules Stein Auditorium from the parking lot. Signs will be posted as well.

If you have questions on that day or someone needs to contact you for emergencies, please leave a voicemail message at my office, (310) 825-3575, and one of our staff members will assist you or get a message to you on that day.

I look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

You may not be registered for the second look day yet. I think you were supposed to fax a reply form to them.

Oh and BTW, "Clabe"?? Before I know it, my name will become "CRAPEE" 😉

The second look program starts too early. I hope I can get up that early.

Hey, I'm waiting here in post-interview purgatory. I just realized that I did not send in my transcripts when I got my interview invite (since it was stated in like 2 words at the bottom), but I did send an update letter with self-reported grades for the fall semester. Did everyone else send transcripts before they got their decision, even if they provide no new info? Hope I'm not rejected now!! 😳

I sent them the transcripts before I went to the interview. Why don't you request your school to do so now.

They probably won't make a decision without an official transcript. Send it in ASAP now, AND call the admission office to clarify it up.

hey no worries about the transcript-- i havent sent mine either, was accepted, and they still havent needed them. It seems to be a before you matriculate sort of thing.

when are the next set of decision letters going out? Tomorrow (15th)???

Hey everyone,
I'm currently in the class of 2007 at UCLA (the guinea pig class of the new curriculum)--congratulations to all who have been accepted and good luck to those still waiting for a final decision! I highly recommend second-look weekend for those of you who can attend. Groups of first-year students will be taking you out on the town; my classmates are totally awesome, very social and easygoing.

In regards to housing: if you want to live close to campus, be prepared to shell out big bucks. However, if you're willing to live within a few miles of campus, the rent is much more manageable. Those of you who are officially accepted will receive info about the housing database (there's one for UCLA in general and one for the medical school specifically) which is full of people looking for roommates. Off-campus graduate housing is available (I live in one of the buildings 5 miles south of UCLA, a 2-bedroom 2-bath, and my half of the rent is only $533.50 which includes free basic cable and gated parking and a free shuttle to/from campus), but the waiting list can be very long. You will be assigned a student ID # when your official paperwork is processed for matriculation, so you don't have to wait until school starts to apply for graduate housing. I got in through the "back door" by answering a roommate ad from someone who was already in the graduate complex (I started looking about a month before mandatory orientation and it seemed relatively easy to find a place). There's a new graduate apartment building that supposed to be open for fall 2004--it's quite close to campus, but the rent is much higher than what I currently pay (around $800, perhaps?). Alternatively you can get together with a few others who need to find housing in LA and split the fee for an agency with rental listings (my classmates highly recommend Westside Rentals; I think the fee is $60). From what I can see in my own neighborhood, there are quite a few places for rent.

In regards to the cadaver scandal and how it could affect future med school students: the court originally ordered UCLA to stop using all cadavers in early March, but UCLA was able to get an exception for the cadavers we had already been dissecting. The anatomy department says they really do have enough cadavers in storage for future med school classes. Our class is trying to get the school to offer both dissection and prosection as options for future students.

The current schedule of the first-year class: it varies from block to block (the curriculum is split into a series of 8-week blocks); we started the first week of August and will be going until the end of June (but this is balanced out because during our second year, they'll let us out in April to study for boards in June). Generally we have lecture every day from 10 am to 12 noon. During some blocks, we had PBL (problem-based learning) small groups from 8 am to 10 am on Mondays & Fridays; during one block, PBL was once a week on either Friday 8-10 am or 1:30-3:30 pm. Afternoons are varied too. They have stuff (labs, small doctoring groups, etc) scheduled 3 to 4 afternoons/week. Anatomy is spread out through the entire first year in small doses (never more than once a week). Lectures are not mandatory, but oddly the afternoon labs etc seem to be.

Hope this is helpful & feel free to ask more questions 😉

Thanks, arginine. Oddly enough that has always been my favorite Amino Acid 😉

Thanks, I just called and verified that today.

the schedule looks great...10-12am lecture, thats awesome. usc starts at 8am! im very excited.

as far as the night out, too bad i wont drink if they go to the bars...im under 21 and im not about to use "my" id in front of the ms1's or any of the entering class. maybe once school starts and we become close friends. i dont want to be told on by anyone. sigh. so hopefully we wont be going to a bar to drink. incedently, i think there are like 3 or so diff groups going out...like you can choose which one you want to go out with based on where they go.

also, i think well be doing pbl cases on saturday. havent been in school for a good 4 months...i hope i dont look like an idiot.

it should be very fun though!! im wearing slacks and a nice shirt. i hope i wont be overdressed.

thoughts??

its supposed to rain on saturday!! 🙁

Thanks Arginine, Hope to see you Sat.

As long as you're not a 12-year old MSTP student, you should be fine 😀

And drinking's overrated anyway...😉

I'll also be semi-dressed up (skirt/blouse).
Goal: look more formal than I do usually, but not like I'm at a job interview.
Who else is excited about this weekend? 😀

Very excited, I loose sleep...J/K. I will wear a shirt, may be dress pants... I am thinking whether I will wear socks.... don't laugh... it is very popular here in the Bay Area not to wear socks...
