I heard that they are all furnished. But what I am doing here anyway. I am more like a Bruout than a Bruin. If you know what I mean...

hey guys,

I remember the dean and/or housing told me that the apts are NOT furnished. I'll call and check on Monday unless someone is really sure and would like to correct me. 😕

Good job. Way to go. Don't forget to ask for one in case you'd have to.
In the mean time, a guy who is on the waitlist did talk to housings a month ago. The unit for him (when or if he gets one) is furnished. Sounds like it is a windfall. He didn't have to ask for it at all. He thinks that the enticement can easily make acceptees forget the cadavers scandal.

For the going rate in the area, it costs about $50 a month to furnished a two bedrooms unit for two. But they are for either used or refurbished stuffs. Everything at Weyburn is assumably brand new.

Hello all,
it's been awhile. I am so happy you got the move-in date you needed 1150829! So happy I could help.

I had the same question as to whether or not the Weyburn Terrace apartments were furnished, and I called the housing office awhile ago, and they told me that they were not. I also read somewhere that we're provided with a dishwasher, microwave, fridge, stove, etc. Hope that helps.

I've been trying to find out who my roommate is so that I can figure out what I should bring down. Francine at the housing office told me that she couldn't give me any information until "right before" I moved in. What's that? What's "right before?" Did anyone get their roommates' info? And if so, who did you speak to? Thanks!

Here's what Dr. Parker, the Dean of Student Affairs, said about Weyburn Terrace:

Several students were in the office yesterday to discuss the ability to
obtain an apartment in the new Graduate Student Housing complex. There are
a lot of rumors and from what I hear lots of incorrect information. I
wanted to make sure you had correct information on the new housing.

* The new housing is for NEW to UCLA graduate and professional
students. For the School of Medicine, it is for new first year students and
new third year UCR students.
* Housing is for up to two years regardless of the length of the
program.
* Each school was allotted a specific number of positions which is
much less than the number of new students. However, if the positions are
not fully subscribed then the non filled positions are put into the general
lottery.
* All school non used positions are put into the general lottery.
* The lottery is open to ALL UCLA Professional and Graduate students
regardless of the year in the school. Therefore, if you are interested in
obtaining an apartment at Weyburn then you need to sign up for graduate /
professional Weyburn housing and will be part of the lottery.
* As positions become open, the unused positions are being offered.
You need to go to the Housing website at
<http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/apartments/weyburn-terrace.htm>
http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/apartments/weyburn-terrace.htm

* It is unclear when the apartments will be finished but they expect
all of them to be completed by September . It is ikely some apartments
will open in the next few weeks while the exteriors of the building are
still being completed.
* I am hoping that there will be apartments available in August .
It is unlikely that there will be a lot of other graduate and professional
students who are here in August and can take advantage of openings .

The information on the apartments are on the housing website
http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/apartments/weyburn-terrace.htm
<http://www.housing.ucla.edu/housing_site/apartments/weyburn-terrace.htm>

Below are a few key points.

* Apartments are Studios, two person townhouse s or two person
apartments
* They are only for Single professional and graduate students
* Apartments are unfurnished but come with refrigerator and microwave
ovens
* The monthly lease is about $850 - 875 / month and includes the
utilities and high speed internet connectivity
* Each space has a parking assignment . There will be a residential
parking permit assessment by Parking Services for these spots.
* Leases are for a year at a time with a maximum of two years.

Am I the only one having trouble accessing the school's websites as far as login and password? I cant seem to logon. Maybe we're not suppossed to be able to yet?

what are you logging into? you can log into housing, ursa, and administrative stuff now. they dont want us to go into other secure areas like the 2004 match, any course materials, etc just yet.

you guys Im getting more and more excited each day 🙂 Have we had a vote to see how many living in the graduate housing vs. off campus?

Hello my party peoples!
If you want to find out any information about your housing, Francine is not the person to talk to. I think if you can talk to Jaime or Irene or anybody else, you'll get some information. Thus being said, as of yesterday, I have not been assigned a roommate. I have a move-in date of July 15th. Irene also told me that there is still a chance I can request a roommate.

How many people got the mailing about Prologue/PRIME? How many people are planning to go? I'm planning to attend both programs from the 19th of next month. See you all there! 😀

heyyyyy. i never got that mailing! arghhhh. im excited too though. do you mind telling me what the letter says?? thanks.

I've vanished for a while hehe 😉
My parents said UCLA Med mailed some forms to my home address, and they have to forward them to me. What are some of the forms that you guys have received lately??

Hey all you UCLA ppl. I will also be joining ya'll this fall. I am very excited as well to be going to UCLA (pronounced ookla) and being a BRUIN (grr).

Anyways, here is some info I managed to get:

1. For grad housing they are UNfurnished except for kitchen which has basic amenities. Check out site for more details.

2. Also for mailings:

I got the PRIME/PROLOUGUE thing yesterday. It talks about a program that runs from July 19-July 29 (approx dates) that is like an into for ppl who are getting back into the academic env, covers socio-econ issues, and basic science things. This first week is at Drew and the second week at UCLA.

There was also a huge packet with alot of orientation stuff (due on July 9) sent out. It has white coat order form, BRUIN card, and some info about living in LA LA land.

Hope to see you guys in fall

:luck: :luck: :luck:

No problemo:

"As an entering UCLA student you may participate in PRIME (Pre-Matriculation Reinforcement in Medical Education), from July 19th to July 24th and/or Prologue from July 26th to July 30th.

PRIME program will focus on community health issues and histology/cell biology. The focus of Prologue will be hands-on experience with medical methods in molecular and cell biology...

While participation in either PRIME or Prologue is optional, examples of students who might consider participating in one or both programs are those who have had a significant break in their education, who were non-science majors, or science majors who do not have a strong background in the methods of molecular and cell biology."

In the packet of information, they had a copy of the Prologue schedule which runs from about 9am to 1:30pm M-F. They also included a one page PRIME/Prologue application that we had to fill out and fax in.

You should be getting this information pretty soon. Most everyone got theirs already. You should talk to Louise Howard (310) 825-3575 if you need anything.

Sorry for the misinfo about housings.
Weyburn is the best deal. And just in case you'd move out somewhere in the area. It is a good idea to notify landlord 30 days in advance. One might not remember that the contract requires so.

I'm going to be at PRIME and Prologue - I'm a Drew student, so we have to go - but you got waaay more info than I did about it! Thanks for filling in some gaps for me. I was wondering what we would be doing for two full weeks! Bring it on. The more info we can get before classes start, the better.
See you there!

Hey all...how long after you guys signed up for housing did you get your assignment and move-in date?

lolli and any other drew students, have you received any info about prime and prologue yet? im wondering what the schedule is like, housing, etc? thanks.

Has anybody heard when the next building in the weyburn terrace will be ready to move into???

cabnd said:

I just called Housing Office today, and they said the next move-in date will probably be sometime in September, but they're not sure either.

Gosh...I guess I should have taken the July move-in offer. Now I'm probably better off finding an apt elsewhere myself.

Is anyone else in limbo with Weyburn Terrace? What are you going to do about housing? I'm out of the US right now, and won't be returning until a week before orientation, so I'm getting pretty concerned.

hey docmemi,
i haven't gotten all that much info about the schedual for prime/prologue, just the dates. they said something vague about allowing us time in the afternoons to look for housing, but i am not sure really what this means. as for housing during the program, we can stay at cal sate dominguez hills during prime (july 18-24) and then somewhere on the westwood campus for prologue. supposedly we eat for free at the king hospital cafeteria while at drew, and then we get a meal stipend for the time at ucla for prologue. it's nice that they thought about this for us - i was sweating the whole housing etc. situation for a while there. it turns out that i found a place to live off campus already, so i'm not opting for the cal state dominguez or westwood thing, but i appreciate that they give us the option.
it sounds like geffen students got more info on the exact schedual for the pre-orientation stuff than drew students did. lucky that we have sdn to share info, no?
see you later!
lolli

Maybe live in an EXPENSIVE hotel for a month or two?? 🙄
I feel screwed by this housing situation too.

I talked to the housing office yesterday and they said they hadn't sent out housing info for a bunch of first year students and would be doing it in a few weeks. I was like hmmm.....doesn't orientation start in a few weeks? I told her I needed to know at least when the housing would approximately be available since Im moving from the east coast. Even if I sublet a place for a month or stay with someone I need approx times. She went and talked to someone and said that housing would be available in the 1st/2nd week of August and that we would hear in the next two weeks of the specific date.

seeing as the way things are going...maybe we should put postings up for first years to share hotels rooms 🙂

Hello future fellow BRUINS! Just got off the waitlist on Tuesday! I GET TO STAY IN LA!!!

With the new b-ball coach, it should a fun next four years!!!
GO BRUINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually that's surprising, because I was under the impression that they're still building most of Weyburn Terrace, and that won't be available until Sept at the earliest...oh well, maybe I talked to someone at housing office who didn't know much and made stuff up.

Hey everyone! I just got off the waitlist yesterday for UCLA. I'm going back to LA! Woo hoo~! I gotta move out of the east coast in two weeks! yowza...

I think it's reasonable 😉

Well, one week until I leave for LA and still no housing!! ahhh

I am from out of state so I really dont have a good idea of the housing options around campus. Since Weyburn Terrace is not looking good in the near future, I need to go with plan B.

Has anyone else waiting on Weyburn Terrace found good temporary housing for the next month? Also, is there any type of storage units close that I could store all of my crap if I end up in a hotel for a month that is furnished? Thanks for any help.

i'm with you cabnd....now that i'm off the waitlist, and i now move to la next week, i'm worried about housing too. mebbe you'll find me sleeping in the lecture hall everyone. or better yet, a cadaver room. i hear they have some nice beds... 😳

just called. we will get info about parking in a mailing going out late next week. it totally blows...we get parking lot/structure 7 and thats totally far away from the medical center. im kinda pissed. 😡

Docmemi,

Is that the parking assigned for weyburn residents or the on campus parking permit that you can purchase in addition? Is there no parking in weyburn?

Thanks,

Shanddallar

that is on campus parking. the way i understood it is that if you have weyburn parking they wont give you on campus parking cause you are so close and spaces are limited...thats what i thought i heard from the dean but he was being funny that day so he may have been joking. you can call dayna at 310-206-0958 if you are really concerned.

Weyburn Terrace has its own underground parking lot. Also it's within walking distance from the med school and med center (5 minutes walk maybe?)

Thanks Docmemi and Calbee (wow really fast response!) One more questions. Does the rent for weyburn cover the underground parking too? If not, do you guys know how much extra it'll be? Thanks again! 🙂

Utilities at Weyburn are paid for (Water, gas, electricity, cable, T-1 internet), but you PAY for your own telephone and parking. I believe parking averages out to $49/month last school year.

Also, undergrads living in Westwood Apts sometimes are willing to rent out their parking places (Many times at very expensive rate b/c parking spaces are in high demand).

I looked up the location of Lot 7 (It's a relatively new parking place), and it's not too bad. It's probably also 5-10 minutes walk from the med school/med center. It's in a centralized location so it's extremely close to Wooden Center (Student fitness center), Ashe Center (Student Health center), and Ackerman Union (Student Store)

Contact Student Affairs Office right away!

UCLA has guest houses (On Hilgard or Tiverton Ave) and there may be spaces available. They're not very far from Med Center (10-15 minutes walk, maybe?).

When you've been at a place for 5 years, it's hard not to be knowledgable about the place 😳

Anyone else had a move-in date of July 15th for Weyburn Terrace and were recently told by housing services that the date is pushed back? This happened to me and I am completely in the dark about when we'll be allowed to move in. Anyone have ANY idea?

Thanks!

hey docmemi,
no phone call from a big sib yet, but i did get an email about the schedual for prime, which seems like it is going to be cool, except for the exam at the end of the week! i guess we should be getting used to it, but i thought we would be in orientation mode for a couple of weeks yet! i'm not ready to start studying - it's still summer - the last one of our lives!
did you get that email too? this is kinda silly, but i am a little bit confused about what we are supposed to wear. i got the sense from the mailing i got from dean miller way back when, that we should be in professional wear the whole time, but the email from the msII said to dress comfortably - what do you think? formal, or not? maybe just formal for the white coat ceremony? what do you think? i don't want to be the only dork in a suit on the first day...

Thanks for the advice CalBeE. I called student affairs and they hooked me up with a guy named John in housing that knows what's going on. It sounds like they will be emailing the med students that haven't heard from Weyburn this weeks about our new move in date.

lolii, yes i got the email too. ill be there for sure. i was actually told that we wouldnt have an exam (i know from last year and they didnt like it), so i was surprised to see it there. yes...im very confused about a lot of stuff. mainly moving in, dress and transportation. i think ill dress nice just the for the first day and then be comfortable/casual the rest. i may be at drew later this week. im gonna figure this out before sunday. oh, you should be getting something in the mail soon with more details. so ill keep you posted.

im soooo excitied!

yea. what a bummer. why do we have to have a test? i dont think itll be a big deal though and i guess its good to get in the mode early on. i havent taken a test in so long. wow. i dont have a car that week. so i dont know how ill get from drew to csudh. okay. ttyl.

calbee, can you explain the grading system? i think im gonna call and try to find some stuff out too. thanks!
