calbee, can you explain the grading system? i think im gonna call and try to find some stuff out too. thanks!
Actually I'm not very familiar with how ranking/grades are given...maybe a current med student can answer this?

lolii, yes i got the email too. ill be there for sure. i was actually told that we wouldnt have an exam (i know from last year and they didnt like it), so i was surprised to see it there. yes...im very confused about a lot of stuff. mainly moving in, dress and transportation. i think ill dress nice just the for the first day and then be comfortable/casual the rest. i may be at drew later this week. im gonna figure this out before sunday. oh, you should be getting something in the mail soon with more details. so ill keep you posted.

im soooo excitied!

yea. what a bummer. why do we have to have a test? i dont think itll be a big deal though and i guess its good to get in the mode early on. i havent taken a test in so long. wow. i dont have a car that week. so i dont know how ill get from drew to csudh. okay. ttyl.

apparently you have to come dressy...slacks, nice shirt. carpool will be available. move in on sunday at 12...bbq in the afternoon.

So... I decided to make my regular biweekly call to ask if I had a roomate YET - especially since I'm supposed to be moving into Weyburn on Thursday, and apparently they're not finished with the building yet. No one in the housing office really knows what's going on except for Janice who told me that we'll be shacking up in temporary undergrad housing until they find out when we're supposed to be moving in. Greeaaat.

Did you all get that mailing concerning computing services? One of the steps asks us to set up our email address.

Hey, novangel81 also told me that we have to dress up for PRIME. I called the number at the bottom of the PRIME/Prologue letter, and I spoke to someone who told me that we didn't have to dress formally. Can anyone call and confirm this? Thanks.

Setting up the email address is easy. Just follow the directions. Just remember that it'll be something you'll use for a while; and it'll be the address professors and your classmates use to contact you, so I suggest sticking with something simple

Thanks CalbEe. I already set up my email I was just wondering if everyone has also. I read the warning about being "too" cute and creating an email you could regret later  .

just stay away from [email protected], [email protected], and the like, then you'll be fine. 😉

Hey all of you PRIMERS,
I just talked to Margaret, the new dean of students at Drew, about attire for PRIME. She stressed that we should be comfortable (whew! no suits!) but professional. Khakis OK, jeans not OK. Also, she did say that we were expected to stay in the housing at Cal State Dominguez Hills for extra bonding time with future classmates. I'm bummed because I was looking forward to moving into my apartment and setting up house before classes start. Are any of you going to take up the offer to stay at Cal Sate? What do you think?

thanks for the info. very helpful. i guess well have to stay then. is she really the new dean of students...howd you find that out?

She told me the's the new dean of student AFFAIRS, not dean of students! Oops, sorry, didn't mean to misrepresent. 😀

I was told the same thing...they want us to bond. I guess if everyone is staying there, I'd like to also. But I definitely don't want to be one of very few people staying there. If that's the case, I'd rather not do the dorm living thing again 🙂 Does anyone know of any other people staying there?

It's about signing up for a UCLA email account, the computer requirement for incoming MS1, and signing up for a user account at the Biomedical Library Computer facility

Hello all,
I'm about to drive down tomorrow but... I just got an email from Louise Howard telling me that there will be no housing for the PRIME program. I assume that this is only for the UCLA students because I know a Drew student who confirmed her housing for PRIME today. What's going on? Oh, and is the PRIME BBQ still on the 18th at 2pm?

I just got in off the waitlist last week and haven't gotten any info about PRIME and the other program. Did people get this info in a mailing or email or web? I just got the "1st official mailing" and the IMF mailing, that's it.

I never got any info about PRIME or special orientation program...and I got my acceptance letter back in like...February. Probably some mails got lost...or maybe those special programs are targetted to certain group of students (URM??)??

Really CalBeE? I thought it was for everyone. I heard about the program from a friend, called the appropriate office, and they said they'd send something to me. The first thing I received was the application for the program.

Maybe Mails got lost somewhere. Just like some people here mentioned they didn't get some other mailings. I wish they mail everything in one big envelope, cause it's much less likely to get lost (Big packages look important to the post office 😛)

Hi Jimdigriz, what is the IMF mailing? I only got the "1st official mailing" today. Also, has any recently accepted people heard anything about Weyburn terrace? What are our chances of moving in soon? Thanks!

I don't know what IMF stands for, but it refers to the student computer facility in the biomedical library (Undergrads and public CANNOT use it). The IMF application form came with the list of computer requirement for MS1, steps for getting a UCLA email address, etc.

Edit: I looked it up, IMF stands for Instructional Microcomputing Facility

The med students at UCLA get to use a grad lounge on the third floor (level 7 or 8 of the library stacks) which is really nice - it has computers to work on, desks w/laptop hookups and small couches that you can take naps on. I used it a lot in grad school. The IMF facility is one floor below this lounge.

Thanks Calbee! I guess that packet should come soon. BTW isn't Calbee a snack brand (potato sticks, shrimp sticks etc)?

Oh yea...According to to some SDN-er JLee, you gotta be hella fobbish to know that 😀

Actually I also chose Calbee b/c it sounds like Kalbi (Korean BBQ meat), and it spells like my own name. So there are like triple hidden meaning in it 😉

haha i guess when it comes to snacks i tend to be a bit "fobbish" but atleast i don't say "hella" 😛 . So let me guess, triple meaning huh...is your name Calvin, Caleb, Calhoun, Calix...(yes i'm consulting a name dictionary at 1am) 😴

I actually only spent 2 years of my life in N Cali, Santa Cruz, and I love the view of the Pacific Ocean from there.

As for the name guess...you'll have to find out when school starts! 😀

the computing mailing got lost in the mail for me. i figured out how to make myself an email address. what website do i go to for the library account?

also, what are you guys wearing to the prime bbq on sunday? they are playing sports and games and stuff, should i dress casual (jeans or shorts, etc)??

thanks!! i love sdn.

BTW, Fall Semester's tuition is due (at least for me) next Tuesday. The charge was billed to my BAR account in June. To see your BAR account, you have to goto http://www.ursa.ucla.edu

Then log in with your student ID# and PIN

Did anybody have problems proving residency status? They want some additional info from me - state tax forms, pay stubs, etc. I'm being charged extra $6000 as an out-of-state student. I'm definitely in-state.

Maybe b/c you just got your green card, they got confused.

And Docmemi, don't mean to scare you, if they say August 20, then trust them. I've been at UCLA for 5 years, and whatever is posted on BAR is due on the 20th of the next month (Tuition was posted on June for me)

I passed by Weyburn Terrace today, and man they're not even close to finished yet! I assume there are 1-2 buildings that are done for the early move-in med students, but majority of the buildings still have the wooden framework, no paint or any interior work done yet, as far as I can see.

Yeah I went by it a coupe of times and not only is it barely built, there's never anyone there working on it?! What's upwith that? I think I'll just live in my car 🙁

I just called the housing office and they told me I have a move-in date of August 1st into weyburn terrace. Has anyone on here moved in or received a similar move-in date?

i'm now moving in on july 31st.... even though jaime from the housing office did say that i'd probably be able to move in by the end of this week.

I'm confused about the cost of tuition at UCLA for the 2004 year after all of the fee increases...

What is the total cost of attendance without housing?

Thanks

Around $10,000 per semester in-state.

On Jul 8th, they told me we couldn't move in becuase the gas dept has to check the building. they didnt' want anyone to live there if the place is gonna explode. I believed them. they said they'll email everyone the week of Jul 12. alright, fine. I called on Jul 16 and they said they'll get back to me. yah, right. I called again today, Jul 20 and they said the fire dept is now going through the place to make sure it's safe. Next week it's gonna be the earthquake dept, the week after that hurricane, and the week after that tornados, and AAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH 😡

Should we do something about this collectively? I feel like they are not really pressured to hurry up becaues they can go down the list of excuses to delay finishing up our housing. Until a bunch of people complain at one time, we are not going to be able to move in before school starts. they dont' haev a move-in date for anyone yet as they just told me over the phone, 2 min ago. it's stressful as it is to move into a new place adn I can only imagine how it is for people moving from far away.

any suggestions on what we should do, guys? We are in this together and as a wise man once said, "If we go down, we're gonna go down standing up!" 😛

YES, we should complain collectively. I am also very frustrated with the housing office for the same reasons.

Wait, so you guys mean NO ONE has moved into Weyburn Terrace yet? I was initially offered a July 1st move-in date and I declined it b/c it was too early for me, and I didn't wanna pay a whole month of extra rent. I actually thought some people had already moved in and settled down...guess not.

Nope, no one has moved into WT yet. They're still doing inspections for the 1 or 2 buildings that are complete....but they've been taking a mighty long time to do them! I was supposed to move in on July 15th, but that got pushed back. They told me I could move in as soon as the inspections are done, but they have NO idea when they'll be complete. That's all I know.

Hi fellow bruinmeds...

I just want to ask you guys for your opinion. I need to either purchase a laptop or a desktop and I just want to know which one you guys would buy. I was told that UCLA has a student run note taking services so maybe a laptop isn't necessary since notes are available online 😛

But anyways.. just want to get a vote with what I should buy and what do you guys have.

Thanks.

~schoolboy

-wow, 1 1/2 weeks until orientation... i'll be able to match the people with their SDN screen names 😀

Hello all,
I just got an email yesterday telling me that everyone who has temporary housing at Marcgan will be able to move into Weyburn on Monday. We will have movers to help us move into Weyburn terrace. Hope to see some of you moving in on Monday! Ciao for now! 😛

*sigh* I haven't received a Weyburn housing offer yet...looks like the next move-in date will be in September. I think I'm going for Plan B: Seek apartment elsewhere...
