I called the housing office today and the lady (who wasn't very nice or helpful) just said that they are sending out offers this week (um it's already end of thursday) and that we should check our emails. I'll call again tomorrow if I don't get an email by 3pm or so.

I just got back into the country this Monday and was told that they would send me an offer by Tuesday. No word then, so I called yesterday and they said I'd receive something by today. Still no word. Anyone get a definite offer yet?

I wonder if the lease will start at the end of August or what...cause I mean, it sucks to be busy moving in when it's too much into the first semester...

Well when I called housing office last week, this very nice lady said that my chance of getting housing before the start of the program is fairly good. Yeah I really hope I won't have to commute to school for a month and then deal with moving during exams and stuff. I'll let you guys know if I find out anything tomorrow.

Hi fellow bruinmeds...

I just want to ask you guys for your opinion. I need to either purchase a laptop or a desktop and I just want to know which one you guys would buy. I was told that UCLA has a student run note taking services so maybe a laptop isn't necessary since notes are available online 😛

But anyways.. just want to get a vote with what I should buy and what do you guys have.

Thanks.

~schoolboy

-wow, 1 1/2 weeks until orientation... i'll be able to match the people with their SDN screen names 😀

I know that an MS-1 there didn?t need any laptop at all. He was happy with his old Intel inside tower that he had since late high school days. He used a lot of inkjet cartridges though. I don?t know if it was for school business or something else. But by the end of the year, those sheets that he had stacked as high as three feet.

As a UCLA undergrad, I found that there wasn't any need for laptop--There are computer labs all over the campus. Sure there were people who took notes with laptops in class, but I saw that mostly in the Anderson Graduate School of Management, where probably the MBA students are "trying" to look more professional or something.

However, UCLA's expanding its wireless network on campus (So far, none of the medical science-related building has it yet)...so in the future, it may be nice to have a laptop with wireless connection. Also, Laptops are sooo much easier to move around. Having moved like 10 times during undergrad, I swear I'll avoid a huge heavy desktop in the future.

Does anyone know which room we are supposed to go to for orientation at 8:30 on August 2? Maybe i'm ******ed or something but i couldn't find that info anywhere. Thanks!

Good question....if anyone knows the answer, please let us know!

I just received a huge packet of info, including textbook list and orientation schedule. We're supposed to register in the foyer outside room 12-109 in the Center for Health Sciences between 7:30 and 8:30am on Monday, Aug 2

Okay so I called housing office again and ofcourse the same person answered (Sue) who again told me that they would send out a mass email detailing the housing situation either, this week, next week, or some other week after that. When I kept pressing her for more info, she just kept saying to check my email when I've checked it for about the 12th time today already! What's up with that? Why can't they just give us a clear yes or no answer?

Not to diss my own alma mater, but that's just soooo UCLA way of dealing with students. I'm sure the med school itself will be better, but many other depts at the university are just pain in the ass to deal with

I called housing again and got Francine to check on my file. So no offer yet. She says there's no way I'll get housing in a week so time to look for temporary housing. They also have no clue when more housing will be available. Again check that email. Is anyone else in the same situation? Maybe we should all team up and sublet an apt together.

I'm so surprised by this. Even Berkeley wasn't this bad! *sigh* Guess it's time to bust out the "won't take no for an answer" and "i'm not leaving until you deal with me" attitude cultivated at Cal.

Sorry to bombard the thread today but I finally got housing at weyburn. Perseverance pays. The move in day i got was july 28. Did anyone already move in to Weyburn? When I tried to accept my offer online, it was trying to force me to select a meal plan (there was no way to not select one). Does anyone know how to bypass this? Thanks!

Calbee, you should send an email to the housing office (calling doesn't seem to do much) telling them how there's only one week left and you need housing. I did that today at 4:30 and by 6:30 I got an offer. Good luck!

Hey shanddallar, the same thing happened to me. I was just e-mailed confirmation of a move-in on July 28. When I initially completed the housing application online I specified that I wanted a studio and ONLY a studio, but they gave me a 2 person apartment. I'm considering calling and trying to get them to change it, but I'm worried that I'll lose this spot and not get another one at all =(.

And does anyone know if that (the 2 person apartment contract) means I have to find a roommate myself or if I'll have one assigned? I vaguely remember reading somewhere in the housing packet that we had to get our own roommates or be charged the full 2 person rent. Does that apply for Weyburn as well?

Praline,

I don't think it matters at this point what you put down on your housing application (studio vs 2bed) cus they just assign you whatever's available. If you really want a studio, you probably would have to wait until the phase 2 is done and that can take who knows how long.

As for the roommate thing, i'm pretty sure you don't need to find your own roommate cus whoever gets to live at weyburn must apply through the housing office anyway. plus on my contract, it specified the payment plan and it's only for my share.

Praline, I also initially preferred a studio...for the privacy and all. But now that when I think about it, a 2-bedroom apt is probably fine. We'll be living with graduate/professional school students, not "annoying" undergrads 😉
Plus you still get your own bathroom and bedroom in a 2-bedroom place. Basically you're only sharing the kitchen and living room with someone.

Also my roommate has been gone this entire month, and I realize how boring it can be when one lives by himself. Having like 3 roommates can be annoying, but having one can certainly keep you company.

Finally, thanks Shadallar for the info, I've emailed the ever-helpful housing office and I hope they'll get me a spot. At this point, I just wanna settle down somewhere, and not to worry about moving in when exam time comes (Trust me, it doesn't seem like Phase 2 of Weyburn will be completed until like late Sept or Oct)

Textbook for Block 1 adds up to 10 books, and cost $600+ if you buy them new from the UCLA Health Science Bookstore. There are some tentative books listed for Block 2, 3, 4A, and 4B. I'm under the impression that you still use some books from block 1 in other blocks as well.

Block 1 textbooks:
1. Bates Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking 8th edition + 2 CDs, by Bickley
2. Katzung & Trevor's Phamacology 6th Edition, by Trevor
3. Clemente's Anatomy Dissector 1st edition, by Clemente
4. Anatomy: A Regional Atlas of the Human Body, 4th edition by Clemente
5. Robbins & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 7th edition, by Kumar
6. Probability without Equations: Concepts for Clinicisns, 1st edition, by Holland
7. Thompson & Thompson Genetics in Medicine, 6th edition, by Nussbaum
8. Essential Clinical Anatomy, 2nd edition + CD bundle, by Moore
9. Langman's Medical Embryology, 9th edition + CD, by Sadler
10. Molecular Biology of the Cell, 4th edition, by Alberts

Also in the packet are social events and the MSQ (Matriculating Student Questionnaire):

Apparently all matriculating students are supposed to fill out the MSQ at www.aamc.org/msq

Social events:
August 2, Monday -- 9pm, Drinks at Westwood Brewing Company
August 3, Tue -- 5:30pm Class BBQ (featuring cooking by the Deans)
August 4, Wed -- 9pm, Hang out at Busby's. Music, food, foosball, pool, games
August 5, Thu -- 7pm, Bonfire and sunset at Dockweiler State Beach
August 8, Sunday -- 11am-2pm, Picnic and field day

August 14, Sat -- Catalina Island Trip

damn that sounds like a fun orientation. have a lot of fun guys. congrats to everyone.

I finally got an offer for housing yesterday too, but I keep getting errors on the website when I try to make the initial payment (when I click the button after selecting the meal plan and rent payment plan). Did anyone else encounter this problem too.

is it possible to get weyburn mid-semester or for next semester...that is, apply later on for housing cause i may decide i want to move out of the house soon??? also i heard weyburn rooms are kinda small, small closets, etc. thanks

That may be hard b/c any empty space will be distributed to other grad students on a lottery basis. UCLA Housing will certainly fill up every room if possible, and these people are committed to one year contract. However, there are usually always people who want to move out before the school year's over for whatever reason. So there is always chance, but don't count on it.

And Weyburn IS not gonna be big. My current 1-bedroom 1-bathroom apt is like 700 sq. feet. And Weyburn's 2-bedroom 2-bathroom apt will be like 750 sq.feet. So just don't bring too many stuff.

wow...looks like everyone's gonna be at weyburn....is that true? cuz it seemed like weyburn was such a gamble, i decided to room with another entering med student near the 10 freeway (near where national turns into exposition). Anyone else live there?

well if worse comes to worst, if any of you need a place to crash until your weyburn opens up, you're more than welcome to crash at our apartment for a while (we'll have to figure out where you would store your things). i would hate to see any of you buying expensive hotel rooms for longer than a week. =) just email me ([email protected]) or IM at "Akalaka". Take care. 😀

Oh don't worry...you'll see everyone else like all the time...so if you are gonna live in Weyburn Terrace, you'll technically gonna be with other students 24/7...do you REALLY want that? 😉

I read that off campus housing students shouldn't see the meal plan page when accepting the offer online. I see that page too and there's no way to opt out of it online. So maybe that's why you are getting the error? I think I'm gonna call the housing office on monday and find out. I will post what I find. Also, is anyone getting parking at weyburn? The contract mentioned getting on campus parking from the university parking office but aren't we looking for a spot in the weyburn underground parking? Do we still go through them? Well I guess I'll ask this question too when I call.

In the final packet I received from the med school, they have a sheet that says Weyburn Terrace residents do not receive campus parking because there is separate apartment parking. They did say, however, that since the building is not done, you can apply for temporary parking. Just e-mail Dayna Moore at [email protected] with "Weyburn Terrace Parking" in the subject line. The deadline is Wed, July 28th.

hey you guys I was just trying to pay housing but it keeps saying that the site is unavaiable after I log-in. Anyone else having this problem?

The housing office has to enable your access to online payments. They forgot to do mine as well. Give them a call so they can change your permissions. It'll take 24 hours for it to process though.

has anyone here not received an offer for weyburn terrace yet? i know i applied for housing late since i was taken off the waitlist...but i really hate the vague responses i keep getting each time i call the housing office. they've told me the next phase will be completed anytime from september to november...so i dont even know when i can have a place to live in. and of course...they can't even tell me when i'll get an offer...so that at least i can start looking for other places.

sorry...but it's really frustrating to know that school starts in a week, and that i could be homeless for 2 months or more.....and this is while i'm halfway around the world without the ability to go apartment hunting.

I was offered a two-bedroom unit last Friday. I called back today to confirm the offer and make payment, however, they have withdrawn the offer and stated that I may have to take temporary housing. The moving trucks will be arriving in LA in a few days and I still do not have a destination for my belongings.

my friend got wyburn underground parking today. you need to go pick up the app from dayna in student affairs and wlak it over to the parking services office. you get the permit on the spot. but email her before going there.

What the heck? That's messed up! How can they do that? Hopefully they will sort this out and give you another offer this week!

Yeah if you just got the offer like on Friday, it takes some time to be able to pay online. You can always fax them your credit card authorization form. I forgot the fax number, but just call the housing office and ask. It'll be just as fast as doing it online.

So I just got my acceptance letter today, and I just finished filling out the online housing application, and requested Weyburn Terrace. But since it seems there's no chance of me getting a housing offer before class starts, I wanted to ask if anyone knows about temporary housing. The commute from my house to UCLA can be over 2 hours in rush hour traffic, and I just can't drive that distance twice a day for over a month, possibly longer. 🙁

So if UCLA offers temporary housing, anyone know where it's located and how much it costs? 🙂

i heard it costs 600 a month. not sure where it is, but i think its closer to school than weyburn.

So... if you have 12 patients in the ER waiting room and half of the patients actually need to be there, what is the probability that the 3rd patient you see will be faking an illness for meds? 😱 😛

Or do I have the title wrong?

Mr. Reddly, the scenario you proposed is waaayy toooo HARD for any bright UCLA med student to solve...you actually expect them to cover THAT in med school? 😉

New books are available during orientation week. If you're planning to get them new, I'll wait until that time to find out which books are required/optional. If you plan to get used books online, I'll still wait until orientation week before ordering, but your books may arrive after school has started.

Have any of you moved into Weyburn Terrace yet? I'm moving in in a few days and I'd like to get an idea of how big the rooms are (bedroom, closet space, living room). Will the bedroom in the 2-bd/2-bath apartment fit a full-size bed?

Thanks for your help!

I just moved into a 2bdrm/2bth today and I fit a queen size into my room along with a computer and couple of other things. You should have plenty of room for your full size! The units are not huge but they are enough. Check out the housing website, there is a floorplan layout. It's a little different than my layout but the room sizes are about right. Come say hi to me in 311 when you move in!

hey everyone,

since i'm still out of the country...i haven't read up on the schedule of events for next week. does the packet mention what type of dress we should arrive in for the first day of orientation? (casual, business casual, etc) if it doesn't...can you guys let me know what you are planning to wear on monday? thanks a bunch!

also...has anyone been successful in getting a studio at weyburn?

No dress code was mentioned, but I'm planning to wear pants (instead of shorts) and a casual shirt.

yeah. it doesnt mention dress. im gonna where like semi-nice clothes (khakis or slacks with a nice shirt) on the first day. after that im coming in sandals, jeans, shorts, etc. ya know...first impressions and stuff.

I just called Housing office, and apparently they have made arrangement for me to live in temporary housing (University apartment about 4 miles from campus) until Weyburn Phase 2 is completed. I'll get a one-bedroom apt by myself at University Village on Sawtelle. The drawbacks are: I have to take the bus to school, and I'll have to move all over again to Weyburn later on.

Hey guys,

I moved into Weyburn last week and the bedrooms aren't so bad. My full bed fit in there together with a pretty big desk. Parking underneath the apt complex ( in the basement) is 860/year, although we do get 1 month deducted from the fee because we don't park there until 8/1 (or in my case anyway). It's expensive but it's convenient.

anyway, I just wanted to invite all of you guys to my tiny apt #215 in Weyburn on sunday, Aug 1, at around 5 for a little cake/ice cream/ (maybe movie, too). It will be fun just to hang out and get to know each other before school starts. Also, bring your 1st-year roommates or other ppl in our class that you know, because i dont' know any. I heard that we should watch "Gross Anatomy" because that's what med students do 🙂 Any other movie suggestion would be welcomed. Although, there is one tiny problem: I don't have a TV, so we'll have to watch it on my lap top, which has a 17" screen, but is still rather small.

by the way, i dont' know who my roommate is yet and i'm not sure if this is ok with her, but just for one day, i guess she'll be fine. and if you're my roommate, please call me. I left you my contact number in the room. Should I buy a dinner kitchen/chairs set? 😳

hope to see you guys there!

thanks for the invite....it'll be interesting to finally attach faces and names to these sdn names. i'll see if my roommate wants to come too (also entering 1st year)
