For current students, how are the professors? Are they willing to help you as needed? Do the students within each class get pretty close?

Hey all!

I just called off the OOS waitlist, and I really wanna accept. However, the cost of living reported on the VIN Cost of Education map is really giving me pause (it's much higher than most places). Is it really that expensive in Gainesville? What do students do to keep costs down?

I really enjoy most of the professors, it's really just preference on what learning style you are best at. One professor brought the entire class bagels so I would say thats pretty awesome. There are tons of students who go up and ask questions after class and the professors seem to be very happy to help, they all have emails given to you to ask additional questions and most seem happy to explain concepts to you. Since we are all stuck in the same room with the same 100ish people that there are definitely people you get pretty close to, I can confidently say I could have a conversation with everyone in my class but I don't talk to everyone on the regular. You tend to see different classmates then the ones you sit with during classes at wetlabs and club meetings. Overall the environment is pretty positive and this is coming from someone who was very worried about making friends in the beginning.

I wouldn't let the cost of living deter you if you really want to accept. I know no one wants to be in greater debt then they have to be but if you like the program and it feels right I wouldn't let price of living stop you. There are more expensive places around campus but there are a lot of more affordable options as well, obviously living with roommates will lessen the rent and help out in that respect. The apartment I am living in now is a 3/3 on the bus route to the vet school and the cost is $406 monthly and then around $70 for utilities and internet. If you have more questions feel free to message me!

Gainesville is absurdly cheap compared to big city living. I live on my own in a 1100sqft 2/2.5 townhome less than 5 minutes from school and pay $850. Having roommates would make living much cheaper, but I prefer it. Compared to bigger cities, its hard to beat the pricing.

Congrats! Do you happen to know if they gave you a number? I'm on the IS waitlist as well and just wish I knew what my chances are 🙁

No they didn't give me a number 🙁 but i must have been pretty high up on the list to get called the day after the deadline. Hoping that you'll get in as well! they did say that the IS wait list is a very short list!

Thanks! That makes me feel a little better 🙂

I haven't heard anything from them since April 10th when they said my app (OOS) was still active on the waitlist. Is there still a chance or is it over?

I would say if you are concerned, just call and ask. The school itself would know for sure.

Any news on if the class has filled up yet? Still haven't gotten any emails or calls since the 10th.

Did you ever hear back? I messaged Lynette over the weekend, she let me know today that they will likely have seats filled within 2 weeks and will let alternates know at that time :/
so does that mean that it is filled or that they are still waiting from responses off the alternate list? I just want to start planing one way or another.
